Building upon existing strengths, this approach helps families acquire skills to overcome generations of dysfunction and manage urgent problems.
The book first discusses the foundations of in-home treatment, including cultural and family differences, community resources and networking, family assessment, building relationships, and detecting abuse and neglect. The intervention techniques of active listening, teaching, exploration, Effective Praise, metaphors, circular refocusing, criticism by suggestion, reframing, role playing, confrontation, mediation and contracting, and crisis intervention are described.
Identifying, increasing, and building on family strengths will make intervention quicker, more effective, and longer lasting. The book discusses how to create individualized treatment plans and a process called "phases" that helps the practitioner stay focused on treatment issues. Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
Book Description
Since the development of the modern state system in Europe four centuries ago, there have been ten general wars involving a majority of the major powers and a high level of casualties. Another major war is difficult to conceive of, since it would presumably be the last such conflict, and yet it is not an impossibility. In this volume a distinguished group of political scientists and historians examine the origins of major wars and discuss the problems in preventing a nuclear war.
Book Description
One of the most important questions of human existence asks what drives nations to war--especially massive, system-threatening war. Much military history focuses on the who, when, and where of war; in this riveting book, Dale C. Copeland brings attention to bear on why governments make decisions that lead to, sustain, and intensify conflicts. Copeland presents detailed historical narratives of several twentieth-century cases, including World War I, World War II, and the Cold War. He highlights instigating factors that transcend individual personalities, styles of government, geography, and historical context to reveal remarkable consistency across several major wars usually considered dissimilar. The result is a series of challenges to established interpretive positions and provocative new readings of the causes of conflict.
Classical realists and neorealists claim that dominant powers initiate war. Hegemonic stability realists believe that wars are most often started by rising states. Copeland offers an approach stronger in explanatory power and predictive capacity than these three brands of realism: he examines not only the power resources but the shifting power differentials of states. He specifies more precisely the conditions under which state decline leads to conflict, drawing empirical support from the critical cases of the twentieth century as well as major wars spanning ancient Greece to the Napoleonic Wars.
Customer Reviews:
Theory of dominant, but declining, powers starting major wars.......2007-01-09
The author, Dale C. Copeland, seeks to present a theory about why major wars occur. In Copeland's definition a major war is one involving most of the world's top political powers and is a war of rival elimination. The book starts off by presenting the current theories about why wars occurs, such as classical realism, neorealism, and hegemonic stability, and then discusses their failures as predictive major war theories.
Next, the author then presents the dynamic differentials theory, explaining its assertions - uncertain future intentions of other states, polarity effects, and the depth & inevitability of a state's relative decline. He then compares unit-level theories (based on individual state circumstances) to systemic theories such as his (based on interactions with other states). In the second chapter, the theory is explained in greater detail by presenting the actual range of choices each state has other than going to war with its rivals, e.g. appeasement, deterrence, crisis initiation, and doing nothing.
WWI, WWII, and the Cold War are all examined in close detail, as the author evaluates each war's fit to the dynamic differentials theory. In the case of the Cold War, Copeland uses the numerous incidences of action/reaction to illustrate all the options short of going to war, e.g. Berlin Crisis and the Cuban Missile Crisis. More than any other case, I believe WWI, complete with the German 'preventive war' mentality, does fit wonderfully into his model. The author also very briefly (1-6 pages) presents and evaluates the following conflicts and their fit to the dynamic differentials theory - Peloponnesian War, Second Punic War, some Hapsburg wars, the Thirty Years' War, Louis XIV's wars, the Seven Years' War, and the Napoleonic Wars.
While I agree with the logic and many of the successful applications of the dynamic differentials theory provided in the book, particularly on WWI, I am not convinced this theory will be an absolutely reliable predictor of major war. One of the major problems I have with the author's arguments is his definition of major war. He seems to exclude all significant wars (except for the Seven Years' War) which do not support his arguments or he glosses over certain inconsistencies. For example, in WWII Japan declared war on China even though China was clearly no threat to Japan. In addition, Japan declared war on the US even though it had no intention of eliminating it as a major power. The theory does not address civil wars either, which absolutely do not work within the theory. And yet, civil wars are probably the most serious threat to peace and stability in today's world.
Overall, I enjoyed the book, though the explanation of the theory tends to be boring and dry. The theory does have some applicability, but it is far from universal as the author seems to maintain. Where the book shines is during its discussion of WWI and the Cold War. I found a lot of material indicting Bethmann-Hollweg's role in initiating WWI, which I had not seen before. I recommend this book to serious, patient readers.
A Significant Addition To Understanding the Causes of War.......2000-10-01
Dale Copeland's work represents a huge step forward in understanding why major wars occur. The debates over the origins of war have focused on whether or not the system is bipolar or multipolar, on the role of alliances in drawing states into war, on states trying to dominate the system, and other variables as well. Copeland has finally put all these differing views together into one coherent theory, adding a major causal mechanism: States' views of future power trends. States are most likely to start a major when when they see themselves in decline in relation to another state. They initiate a war to protect themselves from that growing states' threat to them in the near future. This theory explain why alliance do not really drag states into war, and why the number of poles is important, but not the determining factor. Bipolarity is more seen as more likely to lead to war, since a state must be willing to take on the entire system to succeed in a multipolar system, whereas it need only defeat one adversary in a bipolar world. Copeland backs up his theory with copious historical evidence, which seems to fit his theory. Furthermore, he breaks new ground in his empirical explanations. Historians will no doubt be intrigued by his contention that Germany deliberatly initiated the hostilities in World War One to defeat the rising Russian menace. He explains the Second World War in similiar terms. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he looks at pre-modern historical cases as well, dating back to Ancient Greece through the Napoleanic era. Finally, this book is very readable. Academic writing tends to be cluttered with jargon and in generally is very difficult to read. This book is not. Copeland writes with an easy style that is a pleasure to read. This is one of the few academic books that can be read by people in the field, and by those who are just interested in the question Copeland tries to answer. Highly recommended for everyone!

Customer Reviews:
Gorgeous Artwork, Nice Action, but ultimately AntiClimactic.......2006-11-07
I am essentially a lifelong Hawkman fan, so I purchased this collection despite already having the separate issues as part of trying to keep Hawkman being published. That said, this story was somewhat of a letdown.
The artwork was gorgeous throughout, and the writing did a good job of building up the sense of impending danger. However, the character of Gold Eagle is introduced, and then...
*** SPOILERS ***
... he takes over for Hawkman, and then Hawkman comes back within a matter or 30 pages or so. This was far too quick, and we never got a chance to really appreciate Golden Eagle in that role, before he seemed to have a mental breakdown, and then every so quickly, the real Hawkman was back. This was much too quick of a denoument for a story that took 10 or so issues to build.
*** END OF SPOILERS ***
My other major disappointment was with the explanation of the return of Golden Eagle. I will not spoil it for readers here, but it just didn't make any sense to me, and conflicted with actual event in The New Titans, Hawkworld, and the previous run of Hawkman. This change was definitely shoe-horned in there. I assumed that it was all due to Infinite Crisis but, no, apparently it was just forced in.
Overall, still, a fun ride/read, gorgeous artwork, but still definitely a let down in some ways.
On the other hand, Hawkman has never looked better than when illustrated by Joe Bennett.
A very solid and entertainning story with great art.......2006-05-20
Rise of Golden Eagle is a rich ans strong story with a lot of action, good storytelling and developpement characters.
Joe Bennett, Dale Eaglesham, Steve Sadowski make this one an even more enjoyable book to read.
Try it, it's fun, action-packed and interesting.
This TPB contains issues #37-45, right in the Justin Gray / Jimmy Palmiotti run. But don't panic, anything you need to know is inside.

Pulpy.......2007-07-10
This is a really enjoyable read. What's unusual is that the author telegraphs the plot twist very early on, but you still enjoy the characters enough to keep you reading until you find out exactly how it plays out.
Where or when.......2006-05-27
Fear and remorse are Winnie's twins. He is an ex-cop who drinks too much. Drinkers have night visitations.
Disaster ensues during Winnie's stint as a ferry boat pilot at Christmastime. He rams a motor yacht. Passengers panic. A boat parade is disrupted.
The book describes divorcees-- tanned, beautiful, youthful-appearing. The emphasis may seem crass but it is understandable in terms of a policeman's view of the social scene. Tess Binder is one of the divorcees. She lives in a gated community. Winnie develops an infatuation for her. She takes him to a ranch her father owned. She has a remainder interest in it.
It seems to Winnie that Tess's father may not have committed suicide, that his death is suspicious. He comes to believe that Tess is in danger because someone is attempting to extinguish her remainder interest.
Since meeting Tess, Winnie's life has been filled with hope. Nevertheless, as time passes, Winnie begins to notice scars from cosmetic surgery and other imperfections possessed by Tess.
Winnie is coaxed into drinking too much. He ends up in jail, basically his own idea, where he has nothing to do but face his alcoholism. His alcoholic darkness is lifted. Later his drinking resumes as his complete knowledge of multiple plot strands takes place.
Wambaugh's achievement in this book is notable.
Looking For Clues And Lost Shakers Of Salt.......2005-09-10
Sometimes a book takes a sudden twist that knocks you for a loop. Other times, you find yourself reading a book where you have a pretty good idea what the twist is going to be, only you keep reading because you care so much about the central character you hope you're wrong. The second kind is more impressive to me, and "The Golden Orange" is a perfect example of it.
Joseph Wambaugh's 1990 novel focuses on a boozy ex-cop's love affair with a beautiful society girl on the coast of Newport Beach in Orange County, California. Maybe that's why people are down on it; it's more Raymond Chandler than Ed McBain. Yet I can't help loving "The Golden Orange," one of the most humorous and emotionally compelling novels I have ever read.
There isn't anything here to surprise film noir enthusiasts, though this is much different in tone and story. With his masterly sense of characterization, Wambaugh starts off putting the reader in the shoes of Winnie Farlowe, a hard-drinking 40-year-old forced off the local police because of injury. Adrift, wishing he could return to a job where he mattered, he wastes his small pension drowning his sorrows in one of the few cheap dives in Orange County, occasionally getting a peek at the well-heeled around him.
Winnie's a hard guy not to like, with his sardonic yet humble manner. Told he is ingenuous, Winnie asks: "Is that like ingenious? I used to be ingenious sometimes. Working on homicide gave me ingenious moments." He's so straight up he pays child support for his ex-wife's kids because he adopted them during the marriage. The only thing he's not straight up about is his drinking: "I'm not an alcoholic. I jist shouldn't drink rum!"
After a mad drunken boat ride lands Winnie in the papers for a couple of days, into his bar walks an unexpected grace note. Tess Binder, a 43-year-old thrice-divorced "Hot Momma," saw his picture in the paper and felt something, it's hard to explain what exactly, that made her want to reach out to Winnie.
In no time they're in bed, she's asking him to stay the week, calling him "old son," seeking his help in figuring out what happened to her father's lost fortune and why someone might be trying to kill her. Protective Winnie is convinced his life just passed perfect and is somewhere north of sensational. Except when he dreams.
Wambaugh finds a cagey balance between amusement and gravity with the alcoholic Winnie. When we first meet him is having one of his three-in-the-morning wake-up calls with his version of pink elephants, two buzzards he visualizes pecking at his stomach. He's so used to them he's given them names.
There's also a nice portrait of Newport Beach, Wambaugh's home turf when he wrote "The Golden Orange." After a small temblor gets his customer praying, a bartender wisecracks: "A day to go down in Newport Beach history...Fifteen square miles a greed and white-collar crime. And people finally pray because of a little four-point-sixer." Among the funny asides is a dissertation on the different kinds of rich, and how the Hot Mommas work their tans and plastic surgeons in a never-ending quest to marry up.
The one downside of the book is a tinness of dialogue: The bar Winnie frequents is full of drunks who seem to one-up each other with wisecracks straight from Neil Simon. But this wouldn't be as much of a flaw in a lesser book. There are moments, mostly between Winnie and Tess, where the conversations ache with real emotion, and you can almost hear the lilt of laughter in Tess's voice.
Other people express their frustration with Wambaugh after his 70s/80s commercial peak, but "The Golden Orange" makes me want to read more. I love his humor here, but I treasure his sensitivity and his compassion for the unlucky and dumped-upon even more. It's a keeper.
money and its evil sides.......2001-10-30
The Golden Orange was a vivacious book that dealt with human emotion in both positive and negative ways. The toll that money takes on human spirit is very evident in this compilation. The use of symbolism is mysterious and links the book together all the more. The characters are described in such a way that you develope feelings for them. The Golden Orange is a well thought out book and the twist in the plot adds even more corruption to the pages. The book fools you in a way that you find amazing after the last page is read. Greed and luxary is the main focus for some characrters while for others it is excitement and a new start on life. The setting and description of the Golden Orange give you a real sense of the rich and the bad blood attitude. All in all the book is worth the time to sit and relax with.
