3 out of 5 stars Helpful Budgeting Basics.......2000-06-08

Over all the book is helpful, and the work sheets are detailed enough to seperate expenses, however, unless you have kept fairly detailed records for several months, you will not be able to accurately complete the worksheets. Be prepared to spend time with prep work before beginning.

          Book Description

“Albert Cashier” served three years in the Union Army and passed successfully as a man until 1911 when the aging veteran was revealed to be a woman named Jennie Hodgers. Frances Clayton kept fighting even after her husband was gunned down in front of her at the Battle of Murfreesboro. And more than one soldier astonished “his” comrades-in-arms by giving birth in camp.

This lively and authoritative book opens a hitherto neglected chapter of Civil War history, telling the stories of hundreds of women who adopted male disguise and fought as soldiers. It explores their reasons for enlisting; their experiences in combat, and the way they were seen by their fellow soldiers and the American public. Impeccably researched and narrated with verve and wit, They Fought Like Demons is a major addition to our understanding of the Civil War era.

          3 out of 5 stars They Fought.......2007-02-12

This book was a hard read. I just couldn't wait to be done with it. The book would bring up women numerous times in different chapters but never clearly told any woman's story at once. All I really walked away with was "There were women fighting in the Civil War." Exactly the same thing I learned from the cover. The pictures are exellent though. It would have been nice to have more of them, but I guess there aren't a lot of them surviving. It's interesting, I just wish things weren't repeated so much and that there was a little more information.

4 out of 5 stars Grateful for the enlightenment.......2006-07-16

No scholar here, (if I were I'd have written a book) so this book was very enlightening. Thrilled for the info. Wish it was mainstream knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for reenactors portraying a woman in the ranks.......2004-08-13

Blanton gives us documented evidence of the many women who fought on both sides of the War Between the States, their motivations and how they hid their gender. Any reenactor who wants to portray a woman soldier should read this book, and it's also interesting for students of the war and those who insist women "can't hack it in combat."

          2 out of 5 stars slightly biased.......2004-05-25

this was an interesting book, but it does not contain hardly any information on women from the south. there are some opinions expressed that show the authors are biased toward the union. so if you are searching for information pertaining to the Confederate women, don't read this book.

4 out of 5 stars How Women Fought in the Civil War.......2003-11-13

Neither the Union nor the Confederate Army in the Civil War authorized women to enlist or welcomed women combatants. Indeed, they were actively discouraged from the traditionaly male preserve of combat. Yet a small number of women had the drive to assume male disguise and to enlist and fight. This book helps tell their story.

The authors of "They Fought Like Demons" DeAnne Blanton, a military archivist, and Lauren Cook, of Fayetville State University spent more than a decade in researching primary sources to recreate the role of women as Civil War combatants. Their book tells us something about roughly 250 women soldiers, who fought either for the Union or the Confederacy.

The book spends a great deal of space on the motivations that caused women to disguise their sex and enlist. It finds that patriotism and devotion to their respective cause was the chief motive, as it was with men; but also finds that in many cases women enlisted to be with a male loved one, whether husband, lover, father, or brother. This latter motivation seemed important in the accounts and it seems to me different from the motivation of most male combatants.

The book gives good detail on women soldiers and, in the process, of Civil War military life. It describes how many women managed to avoid detection (of course, many were unsuccessful in so doing, particularly if they were wounded), the strength with which they fought, how they were regarded by their peers, both when they were assumed to be men and following the discovery that they were women, how women were treated as prisoners of war, in hospitals, and the extent of female casualties in the war. The book discusses the lives of some of the women after their career as soldiers -- one of the most interesting aspects of the book -- and it recounts some of the literature that was published about women soldiers during the Civil War era. There was more of this than I had supposed.

At the most basic level, Blanton and Cook make a convincing case that women fought in the war and contributed as soldiers on both sides. Women soldiers fought and sustained casualties at every major Civil War battle. I am a student of the Battle of Gettysburg and learned that a Confederate woman soldier died in Pickett's charge and that there were five women soldiers who were known to have fought at Gettysburg. There were also women prisoners at the notorious facility at Andersonville.

The organization of the book makes it difficult to follow the activities of most of the women in detail. This difficulty is also the result of the nature of the historical records. But two or three of the female combatants left memoirs or other records which perhaps could have been highlighted more effectively in this account.

It is worth remembering that there were about 2,750,000 combatants in the Civil War, 2 million for the Union, 750,000 for the Confederacy. Blanton and Cook document about 250 women soldiers and accept the general estimate of about 400 women soldiers serving in the War. This is statistically a very small amount. (One percent of 2.75 million is 27,500)It is also, of course, a tiny fractional percentage of the available pool of women. Thus, one should be hesitant about drawing broad global conclusions from this evidence. Blanton and Cook generally use their data wisely and circumspectly.

The Civil War remains the pivotal experience in our Nation's history. In many respects, it remains a shared American experience. Thus, it is good to have inclusive histories and to remember the role played by women in combat. Blanton and Cook show that during Civil War times, it was known that there were small numbers of determined women in the ranks. This book does a service by recreating this part of of our national experience.

                  Book Description

Enlightenment botany was replete with sexual symbolism -- to the extent that many botanical textbooks were widely considered pornographic. Carl Linnaeus's controversial new system for classifying plants based on their sexual characteristics, as well as his use of language resonating with erotic allusions, provoked intense public debate over the morality of botanical study. And the renowned Tahitian exploits of Joseph Banks -- whose trousers were reportedly stolen while he was inside the tent of Queen Oberea of Tahiti -- reinforced scandalous associations with the field. Yet Linnaeus and Banks became powerful political and scientific figures who were able to promote botanical exploration alongside the exploitation of territories, peoples, and natural resources. Sex, Botany, and Empire explores the entwined destinies of these two men and how their influence served both science and imperialism.

Patricia Fara reveals how Enlightenment botany, under the veil of rationality, manifested a drive to conquer, subdue, and deflower -- all in the name of British empire. Linnaeus trained his traveling disciples in a double mission -- to bring back specimens for the benefit of the Swedish economy and to spread the gospel of Linnaean taxonomy. Based in London at the hub of an international exchange and correspondence network, Banks ensured that Linnaeus's ideas became established throughout the world. As the president of the Royal Society for more than forty years, Banks revolutionized British science, and his innovations placed science at the heart of trade and politics. He made it a policy to collect and control resources not only for the sake of knowledge but also for the advancement of the empire. Although Linnaeus is often celebrated as modern botany's true founder, Banks has had a greater long-term impact. It was Banks who ensured that science and imperialism flourished together, and it was he who first forged the interdependent relationship between scientific inquiry and the state that endures to this day.

                  Customer Reviews:

                  4 out of 5 stars Linnaeus' tercentenary.......2007-03-27

May 23rd will be the 300th anniversary of Carl Linnaeus' birth so I purchased this little book to become familiar with him and to honor his memory. However this book is more about Banks than Linnaeus, altho' Banks did much to promote Linnaeus' system of classification not only in England but thru-out the world. In some ways, Banks was to Linnaeus what Huxley was to Darwin and Bateson was to Mendel. Not only did Linnaeus and Banks promote science (and themselves), but they promoted their respective country's agricultural economy before the Industrial Revolution. Yet both men were largely forgotten soon after their deaths.

In large part the successful promotion of Linnaeus' system was due to his use of animal genitalia (in an uptight society) as an analogy to describe the reproductive organs of plants and as the basis for naming and classifying them. Add to that, Banks' well-known promiscuity while in Tahiti on Captain Cook's first voyage there (to record the Transit of Venus) and you have a sure-fire salacious combination (sex sells!).

Fara also describes how the English used scientific exploration as a cover for colonization which they justified in the belief that Europeans were a superior race and must help the other races. Both Linnaeus and Banks brought in non-native plants and tried to adapt them to their countries but Banks was far more successful. Indeed Banks had plants and animals transplanted from one colony to another fairly successfully.

So eventho' I bought the book for Linnaeus, the inclusion of Banks rounds out the story. While Wikipedia has more facts on Linnaeus it has less of the personal. I gave the book only four stars because Fara doesn't include an index, tho' Amazon's `Search Inside' feature provided an alternative.

4 out of 5 stars Read this for a science project.......2006-04-17

Carl Linnaeus was responsible for revolutionizing the way modern science classifies and organizes all living organisms. His simple system based on the sexual characteristics of plants shocked society and inspired other scientists including Joseph Banks, whose voyages around the world to find and classify new organisms included an interesting array of sexual exploits with the natives he came across. In her novel, Patricia Fara presents a solid and well supported thesis on how botany contributed and was inexplicably tied into the imperialism of European society, most especially the British Empire.

This book is a quick read and not overly bogged down with the intricacies of scientific classification. It presents the story of Carl Linnaeus and Joseph Banks's enormous contributions to the beginnings of modern classification while discussing the political, social, and economic incentives behind their science. Patricia Fara has written several other books concerning Enlightenment era science and this book is a prime example of her ability and specialty in tying in the role of science as a part of society and government in the 18th and 19th centuries. I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in biology or botany as well as anyone interested in the workings of early modern science and their place in the development of modern English society.

There is a lot of interesting information for the average backyard birder that wants to know more about the life of the cardinal.

I recommend any book from the series. Currently I own 6 of these wild bird guides and they have all been fascinating to read. The pictures are outstanding as well.

                      5 out of 5 stars Northern Cardinal.......2005-03-14

As one expects from books in the Wild Bird Guide series, the volume on the Northern Cardinal is well written, easy to read, and packed with essential information and beautiful color photos. Gary Ritchison is also the author of another volume in the series on the Downy Woodpecker. As with that book, the text is somewhat more substantial than in other books in the series, most notably that on the Black-capped Chickadee. Overall, an excellent book, and I look forward to reading others in the series.

3 out of 5 stars An impressive, informative guide.......2004-01-23

I think that this guide--Northern Cardinal--is a gratifying and educational tool to the natural history of the northern cardinal. It was published in 1997 and written by ornithologist Gary Ritchison. The guide is 122 pages and consists of 11 chapters. The color photos are pleasing and revealing. Examples of topics that are discussed are taxonomy and distribution, food and feeding habits, vocal behavior, the breeding season, the nonbreeding period, and relations with humans. Behavioral aspects of the northern cardinal that I find to be especially fascinating are the ability of both sexes to sing and the regional dialects that they display throughout their geographical range. Northern cardinals are interesting, pretty birds that I enjoy observing and attracting with birdfeeders and birdbaths. Actually, I rate this guide 3.5 stars--it is thorough and impressive.

                      5 out of 5 stars Fine handbook........1998-07-31

Here is the everything you want to know about America's most charming songbirds.
Their taxonomy and distribution, food and feeding habits, calls and songs (males and females both sing, unlike most species), behavior, breeding and development, and relations with humans (excellent, you will be happy to learn), are comprehensively but succinctly covered, in a highly readable narrative with a generous selection of excellent photos.
Professor Ritchison's work is highly recommended for libraries and students, and a fine gift for that birdwatcher.

                      Book Description

In this inviting guide, June Osborne and Barbara Garland follow a year in the life of the Northern Cardinal with a fact-filled text and glowing color photographs. They describe how cardinals stake out territory and choose mates, find a nesting site and incubate their eggs, feed the young and prepare them for full-fledged independence. The Cardinal also explores the special relationship that humans have with their favorite redbirds. Osborne traces the symbolic use of cardinals as state birds (Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia) and athletic mascots and shows how they appear on everything from postage stamps to Christmas cards, as well as in fine art, literature, and Native American folklore.

The University of Texas Press has the habit of publishing loving reflections upon different bird species, penned with a rhetorical flourish by their admirers. These are not merely descriptive ornithological treatises. They are virtually love letters to our feathered visitors.

June Osborne's THE CARDINAL is no exception (photographs by Barbara Garland). The author clearly welcomes the cardinal to her backyard and window ledge and is connected to a network of similar admirers of the redbird, many of whom are drawn upon for anecdotes about this bird's behavior.

The distinctive of the book is that Osborne follows the cardinal through the seasons of the year, making the book a handy elbow-side reference that can be picked up and consulted in, say, July, to see what the Cardinal is meant to be doing just about now and whether 'mine' are holding to shedule.

If the fifth star evades THE CARDINAL in this review, that is merely because much of the detail is anecdotal rather than scientific. A subtitle might have corrected any mistaken impressions and earned the fifth star. But if you want the book, I've described, don't hesitate to pick up this little volume, which adds yet another feather to the cap of the UT Press.

4 out of 5 stars For the love of cardinals.......2003-10-03

This book nicely blends the author's careful observations with published studies to present a good picture of the cardinal's year. The beautiful photographs by Barbara Garland add color to the book and complement the text; a good example is the picture of the male cardinal presenting a seed to the female. Sometimes in my rush for rarities I may neglect my own local birds, and this book will help me be more aware of my backyard. As a fan of both the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team and the Louisville Cardinals basketball team I appreciated the chapter on "Cardinal as Icon". The author can be forgiven for her occasional anthropomorphism. One theory I have heard of the Cardinals early expansion into the Midwest was the following of grain in rails and boats along the Mississippi and is now expanding westward.

5 out of 5 stars A tribute to the Cardinal.......2001-08-05

This book is a definite 'must read' for cardinal lovers. It will bring you closer to these very special winged angels as it provides the reader with season by season fact-filled details about their habits and rituals. I was awed by the colorful photos of the cardinals captured in all phases of their everyday activities. Since I've read the book, I've witnessed many rituals I would have never noticed before - the cardinal kiss, feeding the young, anting, preening, pecking order, gathering nesting material, building the nest, etc. Now, I devote special time each day to watch the family of cardinals in our backyard and cannot believe all that I'd missed over the years. I credit this book for opening my eyes and ears to the phenomenal miracles of nature and God's wondrous creative process. It also provided the groundwork for a most fascinating hobby - birdwatching. I now have become involved watching and studying other birds as well.

I have never met Bob Guge but I have taken a woodcarving class taught by one of his students, Steve Schumacher in Nebraska. Steve taught us to carve meadowlarks using Guge's techniques. I entered mine in our county fair the following summer and won a first place blue ribbon. Then, just today at a woodcarving show in Sacramento I saw a meadowlark priced at $600 and it wasn't nearly as good as mine! (Okay, so maybe I'm just a wee bit prejudiced.) On the advice of my Nebraska teacher, I bought this book on how Bob Guge carves and paints a cardinal. Both my husband and I refer to it frequently because it covers basics that can we can also apply to birds other than cardinals. Guge's book covers painting in great detail, it shows how to prime your bird and then to use multiple layers of acrylic washes to build up your color. My husband got so interested in cardinals after reading this book that he has now carved two cardinals and has learned to make bird legs and feet rather than buying the pewter ones. This book is well worth your money!
