Book Description
A young boy and his little sister awake at dawn, looking forward to a day of excitement and discovery at the beach. It’s so early the lighthouse on the point is still lit. As brother and sister play on the beach, swim in the surf, and explore the tide pools, each experience is a source of wonder. In this newest collaboration by Holly Bea and Kim Howard, children are reminded to appreciate everything in life, from the early morning light to a freckle on the knee to a hug.

memories of a day beside the sea.......2002-05-28
Do you remember those glorious summer days at the seaside? BLESS YOUR HEART will bring those memories right back.
Each new adventure glows with joie de vivre & blessings, & Kim Howard's richly textured, lively pictures enhance Holly Bea's charming couplets.
BLESS YOUR HEART is a book for all seasons - to be read at bedtime in summer to reflect on the precious day just lived, & read in the darkness of winter, to remember & look forward to the brightness of summer.
Holly's & Kim's earlier book GOOD NIGHT GOD will also enthuse you with that particular excitement children bring to our lives.
Fostering an Attitude of Gratitude.......2001-07-13
With another cheerful mix of words and images, Holly Bea and Kim Howard are teaching my kids enduring values...while my kids ENJOY it!! My 4 and 6 year old son and daughter both love this book--they relate to the children pictured, love the wonder-filled illustrations of a day at the beach, and were inspired to search their own surroundings and bodies for things to "bless." Discovering and blessing freckles is lots of fun. My daughter had memorized parts of the book after two readings, and wanted to talk about why we might even bless boo-boos. Thanks, Holly and Kim, for another winner!

Book Description
Book Description
This book focuses on one of the most visible and important consequences of total defeat in postwar Germany: the return to East and West Germany of the two million German soldiers and POWs who spent an extended period in Soviet captivity. These former prisoners made up a unique segment of German society. They were both soldiers in the war of racial annihilation on the Eastern front and then suffered extensive hardship and deprivation themselves as prisoners of war. The book examines the lingering consequences of the soldiers' return and explores returnees' own responses to a radically changed and divided homeland.
Historian Frank Biess traces the origins of the postwar period to the last years of the war, when ordinary Germans began to face the prospect of impending defeat. He then demonstrates parallel East and West German efforts to overcome the German loss by transforming returning POWs into ideal post-totalitarian or antifascist citizens. By exploring returnees' troubled adjustment to the more private spheres of the workplace and the family, the book stresses the limitations of these East and West German attempts to move beyond the war.
Based on a wide array of primary and secondary sources, Homecomings combines the political history of reconstruction with the social history of returnees and the cultural history of war memories and gender identities. It unearths important structural and functional similarities between German postwar societies, which remained infused with the aftereffects of unprecedented violence, loss, and mass death long after the war was over.
Customer Reviews:
not bad.......2006-12-12
I disagree with the Saudi. This isn't some Zionist conspiracy book looking to (god forbid) blame Germans for supporting Nazism when it suited them. It's a well researched monograph that touches on the major aspects of the homeward return of German soldiers. He DOES talk about their deaths in the Soviet camps, as he attributes the poor condition of Soviet captives as being just as much due to the Soviets as it was due to the documented lack of supplies getting out to the eastern front to the Nazi soldiers before they were captured. After having lived in Germany a number of years, and spoken with many Germans, I can say that the portrayal of postwar Germany that Biess provides, while not entirely accurate in my opinion, is quite accurate in general.
Yet another endless accusation of German guilt.......2006-12-01
I found this book to be very disappointing, expecting as I did a balanced and sympathetic rendition of the sufferings of Germans in the post-war period.
The author's reference in the acknowledgements section to his visits to Israel and to his consequent "moral responsibilities" in writing this book should have set alarm bells ringing from the start. This was always going to be a book emphasising the Holocaust over every other tragedy of the war. A distinctly Jewish-orientated point of view.
The basic tenet of the book boils down to one reiterated position; the Germans who were as a nation guilty of war crimes did not sufficiently atone for their sins. The churches and political parties colluded with the people to transfer the legitimate victimhood of the Jews to that of the undeserving post-war Germans. Returning POWs were surprisingly more anti-communist than when they embarked on Operation Barbarossa. An extremely ungrateful and dangerous position to hold after the generosity of Soviet internment.
The use of German POWs as slave labour is callously summed up by Biess as a decision "to employ former German soldiers for the purpose of reconstruction(p45)". Nearly a million German civilians were also forcibly put to work after their abduction of whom nearly 45% perished ("A Terrible Revenge" AM de Zayas). Biess is silent on this.
Although Biess does admit that 33% of Germans died in Soviet captivity (compared to 4% of Allied prisoners in German captivity)
apparently this was "not the result of a deliberate Soviet policy of mass killing or even of passive negiligence." Tell that to the 105,000 German POWS who survived Stalingrad only to die in Soviet captivity. A mere 5,000 survived from the doomed Fifth Army. I would term that a mass killing by any standards.
The expulsion of 11 million ethnic Germans from Eastern Europe, of whom 2 million died in the process, is described as a "necessary" population transfer (p44).
Apparently evidence of the mass rape of German women by the Soviet army remains "sparse" (p60). Perhaps he has not read Anthony Beevor's book "Berlin: The Downfall 1945" which chronciles the mass rape of Eastern German women by the drunken Soviet troops.
The indiscriminate carpet bombing of cities with the loss of nearly a million innocent lives counts as nothing next to the murder of the Jews. This is the mantra which this mendacious and agenda-ridden book seeks to promote. The sad thing is that many propagandised Europeans, including the new generation of self-loathing and obeisant Germans, would concur with this politically-motivated viewpoint.
To quote de Zayas "Seldom is there any compassion for the vanquished. Seldom any justice in retribution." This book wallows in this ignoble tradition.

Important Victorian Military Encyclopedia.......2006-08-12
The Victorians at War, 1815-1914:
An Encyclopedia of British Military History --
"Raugh . . . offers a comprehensive review of the activities of the British Army during the Pax Britannica. . . . A helpful work of syntheses. . . Highly recommended. Military and undergraduate libraries (particularly those emphasizing 19th -century history or technology), and public libraries."
-M.J. Smith, Jr., Choice: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries, March 2005
"This is a very easy-to-use and highly readable book. It could supplement history collections as well as strengthen the reference sections on the Victorian era and on the British Empire. It would be a good purchase for academic and large public library collections, satisfying both the informal researcher and the serious student."
-Patricia Hogan, Booklist, March 15, 2005
". . . is an excellent sourcebook for high school and college students. With over 350 entries, helpful maps, multiple cross-references and a solid, up to date bibliography, this encyclopedia could serve as a good starting point for any research project, particularly one examining British military history in the late Victorian era. . . . as a one volume text, it is an excellent work of reference."
-Stephen M. Miller, Journal of Military History, April 2005
"The Victorians at War, 1815-1914, . . ., is by our distinguished US member, academic and former serving soldier, Lieutenant Colonel Harold Raugh, PhD, FRHistS. This is an amazing encyclopedia of British military history running from `Abu Klea' to `Zululand' with four appendices, a comprehensive bibliography and index. . . . It is an excellent reference work which should be on the shelves of every serious military historian."

Crimean War Research Society, July 2006.
Book Description
This book is the first definitive ornithological field guide to New Guinea, the world's second largest island and one of the richest tropical environments in the Old World. Because of its isolation, New Guinea's biota includes spectacular radiations of unusual plants and animals (of which the birds of paradise are perhaps best known). The region has long attracted naturalists, ecologists, and anthropologists. This book treats all of the more than 700 species of birds recorded from the region, illustrating more than 600 of them in forty-seven fine color plates and eight black-and-white halftone plates. The text contains species accounts treating identification, distribution, ecology, vocalizations, and behavior. This is preceded by a detailed introduction to the region, with sections on climate, biogeography, rainforest ecology, and conservation.
A chief contribution of the book is the wealth of information on the habits of many of the region's little-known species. Included is an ornithological gazetteer, along with four maps showing natural features and important ornithological localities.
Customer Reviews:
Don't go to New Guinea without this book!.......2006-09-26
I just returned from 2 weeks in Papua New Guinea where the only comprehensive bird field guide was the Beehler book, which one of the travelers had checked out from their local library. Even the naturalist, who led the trip, had another book that wasn't nearly as good. We could not have identified as many birds without this valuable resource. A new edition is coming out in April 2008, but until then, the 1986 edition is the best there is.
8 months - no book received.......2006-07-12
It seems amazon is not able to ship this book, at least not in 8 months (I ordered it in December 2005) - Shop around or cancel your trip and wait for the new edition due in 2007.
I have not received the book yet!!!.......2006-03-02
I have not received the book yet. And I get no information, when I try to find out "Where is my stuff". So, I am looking forward to hearing from you - and hopefully get the book soon!
Your sincerely,
Ian Heilmann
An Excellent Guide to a Very Special Region.......2004-02-08
Though quite old, this remains a good (and the only!) guide to the birds of New Guinea.
Unfortunately its coverage doesn't extend to the Bismarck Archipelago, but for the New Guinea mainland and the West Papuan islands I found it perfect.
A definitive field guide to the birds of NG.......2003-12-21
What i appreciate most abt this book is tt it's chock full of information. from an introduction to papuan geography to taxonomy, as well as intros into racial variation of the very diverse groups of birds in NG. The book also delves into the country's natural history, environment and even island biogeography.
another thing i appreciate is the significant introduction given to each family of birds before the species' details list. such info allows the birder to understand how better to expect, spot and identify these birds in the field.
contact information also provided for those interested in visiting the country. followed by a range of tips on how to best to identify birds in the Papuan terrain. the author even goes so far as to give mention of the significance of birds in Papuan culture and life, which is a graet insight, little expected in a field guide.
lastly, of course, the slates are wonderfully coloured, otherwise in black and white (but don't worry, of course the colouration is mentioned in the description) - i suppose to cut costs (this book is expensive) - but an indespensible edition to a complete guide to birds of the indonesian archipelago.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Book on the Birds of a Truly Unique Region.......2004-01-22
This book contains brilliant photos of what are arguably the most spectacular birds on Earth - birds of paradise - and a lot more.
444 species are covered in detail with 650 photos, with the accompanying text describing males, females and immatures, voice, habits, range, habitat and status.
Also included is a complete checklist of the 796 bird species described from the region so far.
A must have for anyone interested in the birds of New Guinea and its satellite islands.
As long as it is unavailable here, try looking for it on sites like www.nhbs.com!

Book Description
Speciation is the process by which co-existing daughter species evolve from one ancestral species - e.g., humans, chimpanzees, and gorillas arising from a common ancestor around 5,000,000 years ago. However, many questions about speciation remain controversial. The Birds of Northern Melanesia provides by far the most comprehensive study yet available of a rich fauna, composed of the 195 breeding land and fresh-water bird species of the Bismarck and Solomon Archipelagoes east of New Guinea. This avifauna offers decisive advantages for understanding speciation, and includes famous examples of geographic variation discussed in textbooks of evolutionary biology. The book results from 30 years of collaboration between the evolutionary biologist Ernst Mayr and the ecologist Jared Diamond. It shows how Northern Melanesian bird distributions provide snapshots of all stages in speciation, from the earliest (widely distributed species without geographic variation) to the last (closely related, reproductively isolated species occurring sympatrically and segregating ecologically). The presentation emphasizes the wide diversity of speciation outcomes, steering a middle course between one-model-fits-all simplification and ungeneralizable species accounts. Questions illuminated include why some species are much more prone to speciate than others, why some water barriers are much more effective at promoting speciation than others, and whether hypothesized taxon cycles, faunal dominance, and legacies of Pleistocene land bridges are real. These years of study have resulted in a huge database, complete with distributions of all 195 species on 76 islands, together with their taxonomy, colonization routes, ecological attributes, abundance, and overwater dispersal. Color plates depict 88 species and allospecies, many of which have never been seen before. For students of speciation, Northern Melanesian birds now constitute a model system against which other biotas can be compared. For population biologists interested in other problems besides speciation, this rich database can now be mined for insights.

Book Description
Henry and Pell have plenty of determination and courage. Never mind that they're just a couple of hamsters. They're hamsters with a mission--they found a feather and need to return it to the seagull that lost it. Nothing they encounter along the way will stop them. Not giant sand dunes. Not cranky crabs. Not even the big scary seagull himself!
Ellen Stoll Walsh's gently suspenseful story about perseverance includes a fun seek-and-find shell game at the end of the book.
Customer Reviews:
hamster adventure.......2005-10-20
This is a great little picture book to bring up the topics of perseverance and courage. Henry and Pell are 2 hamsters who find a sea gull feather. They set out on an adventure to find the sea gull and return the feather. They think that the sea gull needs it to fly. Along the way they encounter some pretty scary creatures. But bravely they continue on the journey! They find the seagull and he's go great ful that he gives them some feathers of their very own!
The story line is a little silly.
I recommend this book to all animal lovers. There aren't many books that focus on hamsters and this one is really cute.
Disappointing picture book.......2005-08-30
While I have previously enjoyed Ellen Stoll Walsh's picture books--particularly Mouse Paint--I cannot get enthusiastic about her latest picture book HAMSTERS TO THE RESCUE.
Henry and Pell are two (small, brown) hamsters that are having an adventurous day on the beach. With a small discovery, a feather, the two determine to return it to its owner...a seagull. The two hamsters happily chat with the various animals they encounter on their search including hermit crabs and fiddler crabs before they meet the sea gull. They don't fear the sea gull until they see how big he is. But the sea gull assures them both with a "deep-down rumbly laugh" that he is a friendly bird that doesn't eat hamsters--especially kind hamsters who return feathers. "I'm not going to eat you. And I grow new feathers when old ones fall out. But thank you for bringing my feather to me. Your kindess makes me happy." The sea gull then presents the hamsters with feathers that are just their size so they can pretend to be birds and fly.
While I think the text (and premise) of the story is at best silly and at worst a bit on the dumb side, I still enjoy the illustrations. I am just less convinced than the back cover which advertises "two furry heroes who discover the meaning of perseverance and courage."
