Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars really cool.......2007-03-13

this journal is really cool. i loved the pregnancy journal, i used that as soon as we knew we were pregnant and i loved the format! so when i heard there was a baby one, i was excited to get it! it is a great place to take notes on your baby as he grows. a 'normal' journal just doesnt work when you are a new mother! so this is a really great item!

5 out of 5 stars Great Journal.......2007-01-19

This Journal is the best I found! I've used the exact same one for all 3 of my kids! What I love about it is it's not a daily journal, yet not a weekly journal. You put your entries in every 4-7 days! And there's great reading in between to keep up on the social, emotional and physical developments of your baby week by week! I never felt "overwhelmed" trying to fill these journals out. The space to write varies in length from 1/4 of a page to 1/2 a page which also helps reduce the stress of having to write a FULL PAGE everytime!

3 out of 5 stars Good for 1st time moms for 1st few weeks.......2007-01-11

This is a nice book for a first time mom in those very early weeks when she is probably very nervous and unsure and might want a neutral source to refer to instead of listening to all the advice of well-meaning friends & family. After the first few months I rarely looked at it aqain though.

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2006-11-07

I love this series. It's light reading, but has enough information. As a new mom, you don't always have the time to read a book this size, but its broken up into day to day reads, so you can either read one day per day or on week at a time. I got this as gifts for all my friends.

1 out of 5 stars Wishing I had not bought this book.......2006-10-04

I bought both this book and the toddler book to write my childs memories down. I started using it for both my kids and realized that there was very little space to write things down when I needed to. I ended up writing over the text which I just stopped reading because it was not helpful at all and unorganized and was covered much better in other developmental books. To add to the frustration, there are cutesy quotes on EVERY page, and when there was a break in the develpmental jargon, they filled the space up with huge pointless graphics that they did not have the courtesy to make light enough to write over! Why call this a journal at all? I am cutting out the pages I did write in and starting over with another Journal. Dont waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars A Welcome Surprise.......2007-09-05

I bought this book on a whim and because it looked humorous. My husband and I were both pleasantly surprised by how practical and helpful it is! As first time parents we are always in search of good practical information. Of all the books we purchased this has been the best so far. It is a wonderful resource for first time parents. It gives great "how-to" details about a wide range of areas such as bathing, nail clipping, diapering, etc. It also helps a first time parent think through a wide range of topics that may not naturally come to mind. I strongly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!.......2007-02-02

So informative, and written with a great wit as to make me snicker and laugh. I only wish I had this wealth of information sooner.

5 out of 5 stars Great info and resources...easy to read!.......2007-01-13

This little book is packed with a wealth of well-presented, easy to access, balanced information. It is very easy to read and reference topics, which is essential because the first year can be so blurry! I especially love the "Smart Mama Tricks" which appear throughout the book. I wish I had had this book when I had my first child. A perfect gift for all the new moms you know.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Outdated and alarmist.......2005-07-13

I found this book to be easy to read, but severely outdated. The author also took a very alarmist stance that treated pregnancy as an illness. I would have preferred a more balanced view like what I found in Pregnancy for Dummies, which is a very good introductory book. I would NOT recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Contents:.......2004-03-19

What you need to know before you conceive to ensure a healthy beginning for you and your baby. Covers the proper nutrition, importance of exercise, avoiding exposure to reproductive risks like smoking, x-rays, drugs, drinking & stress, medical problems, pregnancy after age 35, infertility, delivery problems, etc.

2 out of 5 stars I've read better.......2002-03-05

There are other books out there that take you through the entire pregnancy and parenting. Other books are much more comprehensive than this one. I really didn't find it helpful at all.

4 out of 5 stars Essencial for everyone who wants to get pregnant.......1999-07-10

This book definetly help you to prepare your body and yourself for a better pregnancy. When you are reading it you feel more responsable about this great project of life. Helps you to get more involve in the pregnancy before even you coinceive. I will recommend it specially to first mothers to be.

1 out of 5 stars I wasn't thrilled with this book..........1999-06-24

I had high expectations of this book and was hoping it could tell me some insightful pointers on healthy pre-conceiving, however, the book told me nothing I hadn't already known (don't drink, don't smoke, don't gain or lose too much weight, eat healthy foods). I breezed through the entire contents in 30 minutes and I don't think there is any information included in this book that your OB/GYN wouldn't tell you in your first office visit. I'd recommend looking around for a more comprehensive and informative book.

    Book Description

The Union Generals Speak is the first annotated edition of the 1864 congressional investigation into Major General George Gordon Meade's conduct during the Gettysburg campaign. The transcripts alone, which present eyewitness accounts from sixteen participant officers at Gettysburg, offer a wealth of information about the most pivotal battles in American history; but it is the addition of contextual comments and background material by Bill Hyde that unleashes this virtually untapped resource for readers.

Hyde gives thorough examination to the origins and purpose of the Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War, the political climate and military thinking in Washington at the time of the Meade hearings, and the hidden agendas of the eyewitnesses and seven committee members. He maintains that the JCCW's dissatisfaction with Meade went much deeper than disapproval of the general's hesitancy to pursue and cripple Lee's Army of Northern Virginia on July 4, 1863; the bipartisan body of mostly radical Republicans who favored a ruthless defeat of the South aimed to restore power to the committee's favorite, Major General Joseph Hooker, whom Meade had succeeded as commander of the Army of the Potomac only three days before Gettysburg.

Hyde's balanced critique of this important primary source reminds us that though Meade is remembered now mainly for his role in defeating the Confederates at Gettysburg, the JCCW hearings confirmed that he was not the leader to win the war.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A unique look into the politics of the Army of the Potomac.......2004-10-28

This book is truly a unique look into the politics of Army of the Potomac as well as the thoughts of the men who commanded it at Gettysburg. It is a work that most Gettysburg enthusiasts will greatly enjoy and will also serve as a valuable reference tool.

The book in essence is the congressional testimony of some of the most important men involved in the battle of Gettysburg on the Federal side. The highlight of the book are the testimonies of Generals such as George Meade, Gouverneur Warren, Winfield Hancock, Henry Hunt and John Gibbon. Men whose testimony give us much insight into what their thoughts were during the battle and why it was fought the way it was.

Also included in the book are some not so honorable testimonies by men whose goal at the hearings were to settle political and personal scores with Meade. The testimony of Dan Sickles will make even the most novice Gettysburg enthusiast's blood boil. To say it is full of lies and falsehoods would be an understatement. The testimony of Dan Butterfield isn't much better. The two men set out to destroy the reputation of Meade but in the end only managed to tarnished their own names in history.

As important and interesting as these testimonies are, what really takes this book to the next level is the commentary by Bill Hyde. His comments put these testimonies in context and really help enhance the reader's understanding of what the men both testifying and on the committee were trying to accomplish.

If you hold a strong interest in the Battle of Gettysburg then you are really going to enjoy this book. It will be a valuable addition to your Civil War book collection.

        Book Description

A number of crises since the end of the Cold War have demonstrated the insecurity of ordinary people in circumstances where states are either unable to provide protection, or are themselves the principle sources of violence. Public opinion has provoked international politicians to recognise a problem in which they should intervene; but it is rare for effective policies to be implemented. Emerging from a series of workshops on the International Security of Marginal Populations, the essays seek solutions which go beyond the traditional emphasis on the interests of the state, and give due weight to the needs of minority populations. SAM C. NOLUTSHUNGUwas Professor of Political Science in the Frederick Douglass Institute of African and African-American studies at the University of Rochester. A useful tool for organizing, but I'm finding that Fashingbauer's decisions on merging and omitting various species don't quite fit with my own records (or my field guide!)

Still, a nice little book for keeping track of a life list.

A classic Native American tale with brightly colored pictures.I have searched for this book for several years to replace an old worn copy.
I was very excited to find it through Amazon.

          2 out of 5 stars Raven.......2005-03-25

Raven the trickser wants to give people the gift of light.
Raven gives light but you have to read the book to find out what else happens.

5 out of 5 stars glorious, sumptuous and respectful.......2003-07-12

I get antsy when Native American themes and stories appear in children's books. Too often they reek of cultural misappropriation.

But this beautiful book--gorgeous watercolor backgrounds to the Northwest Native American-style imagery--feels respectful, and does a great telling of a favorite Tlingit Haida tale of how light came into the world.

The illustration of the morphing of the Sky Chief's spoiled grandson back into Raven is particularly effective. And when Raven fills the sky with the sun in his beak, it's very easy to buy into this story as a valid creation myth.

I've now bought three copies of this book for various pre-schoolers I know, and all my grown-up friensd who've seen this book have fallen in love with it, too. This is a definite winner, bound to become as classic in its own way as Robert McCloskey's ``Blueberries for Sal.''

5 out of 5 stars They ask to listen to it again and again!.......2000-01-03

The children in my Pre-K class cannot get enough of this book. The magic of the illustrations and the text has them mesmerized. Many times, when we have finished reading the story, they want to here it again!

          5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Illustrations.......1999-07-01

This is a wonderful book! My daughter and I really enjoyed the way that this tale was re-told and the illustrations were beautiful!

5 out of 5 stars Great For The Novice Birder.......2007-08-05

I bought this book for my husband as a birthday present and was happily surprised how much he liked it. Each page is devoted to one bird. My brother visited and enjoyed looking at it so much that we got him one for his birthday, too!

5 out of 5 stars Favorite Bird Book.......2007-07-16

I bought this book many years ago and have found it to be the best out of all the books I've purchased over the years in helping to identify different bird species. It is very helpful, especially for beginners, since there are colorful artist's renderings of each bird and a detailed description of the birds' markings, habitat, feeding habits, and description of their eggs to guide you. I only wish the book included even more bird species than it does.

4 out of 5 stars Great information and illustrations.......2007-07-03

The illustrations are what make this book unique. Stories that go along with each description are really interesting and provide great insight. The only issue I have with the book is that there doesn't seem to be a quick way to go about looking up a bird that you have sighted. Despite this drawback, it's still worth purchasing.

            4 out of 5 stars It's amazing.......2005-08-15

What wonderful books Reader's Digest has on such a variety of topics. I've never been disappointed in Reader's Digest books. Whether you are a beginning birder or an experienced one, you will find this book very useful.

            5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2005-08-13

I am not a "birder" but my family and I spend a lot of time outdoors. We enjoy a varity of birds in our respective back yards. This book has helped us to identify several species native to Arkansas. The book is well written and the pictures are large and in color. Each species has an entire page with a description of their nesting habits and what they normally eat. This is very helpful to ensure that we have the proper areas and/or birdhouses to keep attracting the birds we most enjoy. I am sure we will be reading in this book for years to come!

The American Southwest boasts a greater variety of bird species than can be found anywhere else in North America. This makes the region a mecca for serious and casual bird lovers alike. In Birds of the American Southwest, noted authority and author Lynn Hassler Kaufman describes and depicts, in full color photographs, more than eighty-five key bird species, including several which are threatened or endangered. This indispensable field guide describes in detail the habitat, field marks, and characteristic behaviors for each species. Birds of the American Southwest also provides birders with useful tips on where to find and observe them in the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts and "sky island" mountain ranges of southern Arizona and New Mexico.
