Book Description
About Love is a refreshingly reasonable and engagingly readable study of the phenomenon of romantic love. Offering insightful observations from a broad range of sourcesliterary, historical, and personalRobert Solomon explores the crucial ingredients of time and sex in contemporary relationships and discusses whether love "at first sight" is possible, and whether love that lasts a lifetime is probable.
Customer Reviews:
Best book on the subject.......2005-01-21
This is the most insightful book on the topic of love that there is. After my divorce 10 years ago, I did what a lot of people do and read a lot of so-called "self-help" books. This is not a self-help book but it does provide a very down-to-earth discussion of what real love between two mature adults really is all about. Love is complex and one of the neat things about this book is that the author defines love in many different ways. The primary insight here is that ideally romantic love is not an obsession, not idealistic, and it involves re-defining oneself as a part of a couple. This is perhaps why so many people who are over 40 and are unattached find it hard to become part of a couple. But the book also holds out hope for love that is permanent and lasting and grows deeper with time.
amazing work.......2003-02-13
I don't understand why this book never got "big". It is so comprehensive, with all its references to history and cultures and even mythology, and so balanced and insightful. I read this book over ten years ago and just recently pulled it out to reread the many parts I had highlighted. That's a rare thing. I wish more people knew about it. For anyone who is fascinated in analyzing and thinking about what love is, it's a very important piece of work that really makes you think and see things differently. Though the author is not offering his insights as facts, just the fact that they are offered opens up new doors from which to view love in your life and in general. One of my favorite works of non-fiction.
A genuine masterpiece........1997-05-12
About Love is a welcome burst of genius on the topic
most in need and deserving of it. "Relationship"
books are a category where sloppy reasoning abounds
and where simple selfishness is often offered as a
legitimate approach to meaningful intimacy. This book
however, is a genuine masterpiece. More than any other
writer on this topic, and more than most writers
on any topic, Mr. Solomon enters the big issues and
emerges with, in my opinion, the Truth.
About Love is about, as it must be, people,
history, intimacy, respect, loyalty and fulfillment.
In short, it is about the things which matter most
and the things which form the raw materials of
romantic love and meaningful relationships.
This is not a book which can be properly
digested in one pass. Rather, it offers the more intense satisfaction of new and interesting insights from
repeated readings. It is best digested a little at
a time and held up as a lens through which to view
one's personal landscape. A degree of dedication is
required (just like love itself) as early portions
of the book review the history of romantic love in
a rather scholastic and philosophical light. Little
by little however, the insights build upon each
other and become more personal, leading to compelling insights and philosophies on all the big issues
of love including love at first sight, romantic
tension, loyalty, and making love last. Sprinkled
throughout is also a series of inspired quotations:
Lauren Bacall's observation on the importance of
fidelity is worth the price of admission in itself.
In the years since I was fortunate enought to stumble
upon this book, I have not read or heard reasoning
on the topic of romantic love or human relations
which equals that found in its pages. Overall, it
is the finest book I have ever read, and for the
motivated reader, I highly recommend it.

Excellent book for any military enthusiast! Great detail of the production of the aircraft as well as the testing that was done to ensure the reliability and survivability of this aircraft. As a crew chief on the B1-B at Ellsworth AFB we showed the world our combat capability in Iraq in Dec 98 and again in Yugoslavia in March-June 99.

Better than Santa Claus !!.......2006-06-23
What could be a more precious gift than learning to read? It's time for Santa to take second place! Do children today really lack interest in our 'wider world'? Writers for newspapers & magazines frequently write about *GEOGRAPHICALLY-CHALLENGED* young people. Author Margriet Ruurs' book tells children of the many ways in which libraries are brought to the doorsteps of readers in thirteen far flung countries in this world. It isn't dry-as-dust information -- it is exciting & colorful; mind-boggling in some instances.
Our Bloomington (IN) daily paper does print a map frequently with squibs of news from about ten 'hot spots' on this Earth. Everyone could gain by studying such a map & adopting a regular habit of "connecting the dots" between countries and happenings, and between happenings and long-term effects on individual lives, and our Universe.
In Australia huge trailer-trucks are solar-powered & very high-tech, powering computers and air conditioning, plus. A librarian-storyteller travels with the materials and keeps kids' minds stimulated with stories.. In Azerbaijan (former Soviet republic) there are funds for sending library trucks to only two refugee settlements. In contrast beach deliveries of books are made in England with wheelbarrows!
Native Inuits in Canada rely on the mail service with prepaid 'returns.' Finland supplies a boat for service to outer islands, some of which are populated only during the brief summer. Indonesia provides boats & bicycles for deliveries. The most dramatic carriers are in Kenya where camels carry tents for 'setting up shop' with boxes of books . . . AND, in the mountainous areas of Thailand elephants go on 20-day round trips to make their deliveries! Imagine elephants instead of Bookmobiles here in the U.S.! It might awaken our sensibilities to the lengths some governments go to take *LEARNING* to the people. In Mongolia motor bikes have replaced camels & horses to deliver books; in Peru & Zimbabwe donkey carts are used. All over the globe in hard-to-reach areas people are making great effort to bring literacy to children & others hungry for learning. We can cheer, too, for inter-library exchanges to fulfill assignments, for research and/or just plain JOY.
After reading a recent National Geographic poll we can see that people's apathy is as serious as gaps in knowledge. Reviewer mcHAIKU believes this would seem pathetic, if it were not so frightening. CHEERS for Ruurs' engaging book that brings us a gift of optimism.
A lively, unusual, and enthusiastically recommended title.......2005-10-04
How are books brought to children around the world? We're used to a library consisting of a building - but some move from place to place by bus, boat, and even animal or wheelbarrow. Mobile libraries are often the only ways books come to remote world locations - and My Librarian Is A Camel comes from libraries around the world. Margriet Rurrs asked librarians to share stories about their libraries: the result often was not only a verbal description and stories, but color photos: all of which are included in this lively, unusual, and enthusiastically recommended title.

Flicka: The Movie Novel (Flicka)
ASIN: 006089931X

Book Description
It seems Ken can't do anything right. He loses saddle blankets and breaks reins . . . but then comes the worst news yet: a report card so bad that he has to repeat a grade. How can you tame the dreamy mind of a boy who stares out of the window instead of taking an exam? Enter Flicka, the chestnut filly with a wild spirit.
Over the course of one magical summer, both will learn the meaning of responsibility, courage, and, ultimately, friendship.

Customer Reviews:
A horse, a boy, and a family.......2007-04-10
I have to give this book 5 stars. Mary O'Hara wrote an incredibly beautiful story about a struggling family. Many of the details of the story are so true to life. As an adult reading this story, I found the details about the parents to be more interesting than the story of the horse and the boy. O'Hara really understands the concerns of a parent for a struggling child and it's very true to life in the book. Many important issues are touched upon in this book too; responsibility for our domestic animals, love for people and animals, doing our duty in our every day life are all there with out being mushy and sentimental. O'hara also paints a vivid picture of Wyoming and old-time ranch life. It makes me wish it was still like that, so I could visit it. This is another great book for a read aloud family time.
My Friend Flicka .......2007-01-15
This is a very good book. My granddaughter really enjoyed it.
Surprise! A clinical description.......2006-02-19
I am in the middle of lstening to this book. Its detailed descriptions of ranch life and horses are quite compelling. But what surprised me was the absolutely accurate description of a boy with ADD. This book was written some two decades before attention deficit disorder gained anyone's attention, but O'Hara's descriptions of Ken's behavior are absolutely consistent.
And then O'Hara answers the question of what to do about the condition: give the kid something he really wants to do and stand back. Of course, it helps that Ken has two wise and good-hearted parents; but then, maybe that is the start to solving most problems that children have.
A fine book on many levels, and a fine companion on the road for adult and child.
A COMMANDING NARRATION OF A CLASSIC.......2006-01-26
Although he made his audio book debut just two readings ago, stage, screen and television actor Michael Louis Wells is in full command of the metier with his narration of the classic My Friend Flicka. Many will remember the story as a film with Roddy McDowall, as a TV series or as a current film. Wells is on a par with all of the actors who have undertaken bringing this touching tale to life. The reason for the story's many incarnations is obvious - it is one of our best-loved books and well deserves its place among others that are enjoyed from generation to generation, such as Treasure Island and Mutiny on the Bounty.
Pivotal to O'Hara's story is Ken and his seeming laissez faire attitude. Where his mind is his father, Rob, certainly doesn't know. He's a young boy who would much rather just look out a window than study his arithmetic. He should have studied because his report card is so poor that he's doomed to repeat a grade. Rob undoubtedly wonders whether he'll even catch on the second time around.
Their home is Wyoming's Goose Bar Ranch and Rob is working hard to make a go of it. He doesn't need a son who seems given to daydreams. Then, along comes Flicka, a beautiful chestnut filly, with a wild streak inherited from her sire. Ken is certain he can tame Flicka, and so begins the unforgettable relationship between a boy and his horse.
O'Hara wrote a follow-up to her story, Thunderhead, but it never achieved the popularity of My Friend Flicka, a timeless story to be enjoyed over and over again.
- Gail Cooke
Simply wonderful!.......2005-08-27
On the Goose Bar Ranch in Wyoming, between the World Wars, former Army captain Rob McLaughlin and his Eastern blue-blood wife, Nell, are raising two sons and an ever-growing herd of thoroughbred horses. Rob, a stern but loving father, doesn't know what to do with younger son Ken. The boy daydreams constantly, and for that reason just failed to be promoted at his boarding school. Why should Rob give small Ken a colt of his own, as he already has older son Howard, when Ken can't do anything that demonstrates he's responsible enough to be trusted? Yet a colt is what Ken wants more than anything else in the world. Until he finds out what happens to male horses when they're two years old - after which he decides he'd rather have a filly.
Not just any filly, though. Flicka, born to the half-wild mare called Rocket. Flicka is faster already than her sire, the ranch's stud horse Banner, and Ken believes he'll be able to train Rocket's "bad blood" out of the yearling. Rob thinks his son is (to use his word for it) dumb, for a lot of reasons that now include choosing this filly that Rob is sure will turn out to be just as "loco" as her dam. Untrainable, and downright dangerous to those who try to handle her.
This novel is a perfect example of the type of children's classic that, when read by adults, proves to have depths and layers its target audience never perceives. I know I read it as a young girl, and enjoyed it as both a good "horse story" and coming of age tale. But in reading it again now, I was amazed by the detailed and multi-faceted characters of Rob and Nell. Their love story is one of the most interesting I've read, because the author not only captures the tensions between these two very different people - she also captures the way that raising their children, who are (for better or worse!) a blending of those differences, affects their relationship. No wonder this book is still in print more than 60 years after it was first published. Simply wonderful!

Book Description
This guide presents hawks, falcons, ospreys, eagles, kites, owls, and vultures. Lethal talons, hooked beaks, and exceptional eyesight are all common to these majestic predators.
Reminiscent of nineteenth-century botanical prints, the full-color illustrations in this guide are miniature watercolors, as delightful to look at as they are accurate. With each illustration the reader will find the popular and scientific names, size, range, and a concise description of the habitat or an interesting bit of lore. Ideal for the backpacker or dayhiker, the book fits handily in the pocket.
Customer Reviews:
Great quick reference book!!.......1998-10-18
The beautiful illustrations by the authors/illustrators are what first caught my eye. This pocket sized book makes it easy to identify birds in the wild, both with the drawings and the areas the birds generally spend their time. The descriptions of the species cover all the basics, like size and weight and distinguishing features. A MUST for anyone interested in raptors and more than well worth the price. :-)
