Book Description

Single mothers often feel overwhelmed with the responsibilities that they must juggle alone. This book will uplift and empower women who are on the challenging yet rewarding journey of single parenting. This book steers clear of child-rearing suggestions, choosing instead to nurture single mothers, who sometimes forget to care for themselves.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointed..........2005-04-19

There was no mention of the religious tone to the book in the description. The book has very large print, which I believe the publisher used to make the book seem like it has something to say; it doesn't. The book is filled with cliche after cliche. There are lots of good books out there for single moms/parents, and this is not one of them. I rarely return books, but this one is going back.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Resource for All Mothers!.......2004-04-29

Through death, divorce, or other means the dynamics of many American households has changed from when our parents, or even we were raised. Duties that used to be handled by a cohesive co-parenting unit are now taken on fully by single-parent ones, and most often the head of the single-parent home is a woman. Even if the father is still in the picture, the bulk of raising the children falls largely on the mother, who plays chief cook, bottle washer, and all around Jill-of-all-trades to juggle this task. An overwhelming state to say the least, but in A Single Woman's Parenting Journey, author Carla J. Curtis offers practical and much needed survival tidbits to help make this journey a little less rough.

Backing all of her tidbits with scripture, Carla helps to unlock the strength behind them according to the will of the Creator. She presents a well balanced dose of real life examples, support suggestions, and most importantly prayer - remaining close to the premise of Chapter One and her first survival tactic, putting God first.

4 out of 5 stars A must read for the single women who is struggling to cope.......2003-03-30

Getting through the day's demanding events can be taxing for most. However, if you are single and trying to raise children alone, maintaining your sanity is more taxing. Carla Curtis has found a solution. She's been there, and through her strong sense of faith,Carla can help fellow sisters find answers. Her survival tips will guide many with good coping techniques and ways of maintaining your daily life. I highly reccomend this author for your perusal. "A Single Woman's Parenting Journey" is right on time.

5 out of 5 stars PRICELESS KNOWLEDGE.......2003-03-30

CARLA HAS A WAY OF MAKING COMMON SENSE NEW AGAIN! SHE UNDERSTANDS, TRULY, HOW MUCH EXPERIENCE AND SUFFERING AND SUCCESSES AND FAILURES CAN BECOME A FOOTSTOOL TO A BETTER WAY OF LIFE AND ENDURANCE.

THIS BOOK IS A MUST FOR WOMEN AND FOR BROTHERS LIKE MYSELF (ONES WHO WANT TO BE REAL MEN). I'VE LEARNED THINGS FROM HER TO HELP ME PREPARE FOR WHAT'S TO COME...PRICELESS KNOWLEDGE FOR EVERYBODY.

WE'RE LUCKY HER BOOK COST AS [little] AS IT DOES!--FOR REAL!

4 out of 5 stars Very encouraging!.......2002-09-07

I appreciate how Carla Curtis includes scriptures for encouragement and has taken the time to research the topic to reach her target audience.

A Single Woman's Parenting Journey is in a simple to read format that can easily be incorporated in the single woman's day.

Chapter 3: Set Your Goals and chapter 4: Love and Pamper Yourself are crucial in any woman's life, yet more so in the life of a single female parent. Re-enforcing goal setting and supporting self-pampering are important "survival tidbits"! I recommend reading these chapters first if you feel lost in a career or over-worked.

A great close to this book are the sample prayers which target specific areas which effect single female parents. This is a great addition to a single female parent's library! -LC

    Book Description

Author Jerry Crews has more than 25 years of military service and travels across the country counseling members of the armed forces about to enter the civilian work force. Crews makes this transition process simple by detailing a transition execution plan that uses the military's basic planning principles. Topics also follow a military approach with their concise, simple and to-the-point style. Jump Start Your Career has three objectives. First, to help service members recognize that their core values, work ethic, and self-discipline will translate into civilian work force success. Likewise, the second goal is to instill a sense of confidence. Finally, the book aims to motivate retiring military members by making the transition process simple, balanced, and approachable. The book is written primarily for current military members who are leaving service in the civilian workforce. However, anyone--civilian or military, young or old-changing careers or jobs, can benefit from the basic principles of Jump Start Your Career.

      Book Description

Like gardening, bird watching is a fast-growing regional hobby. Now, Cool Springs Press brings its proven method of successful state-specific gardening approach to bird watching guides. In collaboration with Bird Watcher's Digest, these bird watching guides provide accessible, credible advice.

The birds that frequent the backyards of Tennessee differ from the birds that frequent the backyards of Florida. In addition to unique descriptions, each bird profile includes a range map to identify each bird's North American distribution. One hundred birds are profiled, each with a color photograph, to ensure accurate identification. A seasonal section informs the reader of:
Migrating birds that can be seen during that season
The foods and plants that can attract those birds
Where to go to view year-round and migrating birds

Cool Springs Press's partner, Bird Watcher's Digest, has sold more than 4 million copies of their booklets on bird species, bird habitat, feeding, and other related topics.

This series of books from Cool Springs Press targets the beginning bird watchers for ten states.

3 out of 5 stars The Beauties Abound in this State, as Do the Predators........2005-09-10

Mid- to late-September is the peak of the hawk's Southern migration through Tennessee. Most are in the Eastern part of the state at Soddy Mountain in Chattanooga and Sharps's Ridge, just up Broadway about a mile from where I live in Knoxville.

The Europena Starlings are unloved on the streets and by the downtown residents of this town. In 1889, there were not European starling in North America. In 1890, a hundred were released in New York's Central Park in an attempt to bring to America ll the bird species mentioned in Shakespeare's plays. Today, just over a century later, we have more than 200 million. The adaptable starling spread westward in history's greatest avian population explosion.

The barred owl is the one the artificial GSA owls around town look like. It is a top-of-the-line predator, eating fish, rabbits, pigeons. It is a drug=dge to the bird world. The red-tailed hawk eats a variety of birds, mice, rats, rabbits, squirrels, even reptiles.

The black vulture, worse even than the falcons to eat pigeons, kills small animals like young pigs, calves and lambs. The American Kestral, merlin and peregrine falcons feast on rodents, pigeons, voles, and other small animals.

The loon is a fish-eater. All four types -- common, red-throared, yellow-billed and Pacific -- can be found at Big Sandy. It's haunting, yodeling calls are heard around ponds and bodies of water. They migrate through Tennessee in November and March.

Tennessee Warblers nest across much of Canada and in northern U. S. states. In Tennessee, they migrate west of the Appalachians, Tennessee Warblers spend teh winters from southern Mexico to northwestern South America. I think they are not Tennessee birds at all!

Noted for its newing-catlike call, it can imitate as many others as the mockingbird in its vocal versatility. The catbird eats aphids, termites, dragonflies, caterpillars, grapes, cherries nd berries along with mountain ash shrubbery.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars great for newcomers to the state.......2003-07-11

I have found this chart very helpful, because I have only lived in Tennessee ten weeks. My backyard is so thick with trees that often I'll only see a flash of color--I can see a bird's approximate size and its colors, but not its shape or any details. This chart narrows down what kind of bird it might be, and I can then look up the bird in my bird books and look to see if I have the correct bird once I get another glimpse of it. It can't really be used alone, as it doesn't give much detail or even a very good picture, and I've seen one or two birds already that aren't in it because they aren't common in the state, but it is very helpful for what it does do.

3 out of 5 stars Useful but limited foldout guide........2000-04-13

This is a useful guide for identifying common birds in Tennessee. However, it includes only the drawings and sizes. I use mind to hand to friends when I am birding; it keeps them out of my Peterson's and Audubon guides.

        5 out of 5 stars Superb Compilation.......2000-06-20

A more suitable compilation than this will not be found. These three plays are arguably the essential core of the Williams canon, and certainly a great starting place for novices.

Sweey Bird of Youth is blessed with perhaps the finest epitaph ever in a modern drama, when the play's main character emanates Williams's legendary compassion with the concluding line, "all I ask is for the recognition of me in you, and time, the enemy, in us all." Shakespeare would have salivated.

Both the Rose Tattoo and Night of the Iguana exhibit Ibsen's impression upon Williams, as Williams incorporates brilliant metaphor's that wrap around both plays like knotted ribbons, but Williams's poetic language in each surpasses that of Ibsen by eons. Much in the vein of Ibsen's The Wild Duck or Chekov's The Seagull, Williams gives us a lesson in fate, freedom and human desire with his Iguana, tied to a post by a rope and struggling to escape, waiting to be killed as food, and he walks us through a world of intense nostalgia and heartbreak with the Rose Tattoo marking the chests of Serafina's lovers.

Even O'Neil, lauded by most as our finest American playwright, never quite matched the powerful language of the heart that saturates these three works of gritty, raw desire and nostalgia. Both of which, as Williams insists, take up plenty of space in the hearts of all.

4 out of 5 stars Like An Old Friend.......2003-07-31

This is the first bird book I ever owned. I purchased it in the summer of 1999. Four years later, it's like an old friend. It starts out with a short introduction and a few pages on the problem of identification. Then it goes on to describe the various bird habitats in North and South Carolina. The largest section of the book, of course, is the species guide. I found it to be particularly helpful with woodpeckers and shore birds, of which there is a wonderful variety here on Hilton Head Island.

I'm still learning about birds, so I have not yet become proficient at differentiating between various warblers, for example, but this book has helped me identify a couple. Last summer, I searched the book front to back for a bird species I encountered in Pickney Island National Wildlife Preserve, and never found it. Turns out that the bird was a Golden Crowned Kinglet. The bird was listed in this book, but for some reason there was no photo. Strictly speaking _Birds of the Carolinas_ isn't the best field guide on the market, but I still use it and have thoroughly enjoyed owning it. I think you'll enjoy it, too, especially if you are a new hobbyist.

          1 out of 5 stars don't bother.......2003-02-12

I ordered this book hoping to have help identifying the birds at the feeders in my back yard. This books wasn't much help. Most of the photos are tiny--all you see is a bird shape sitting in a bunch of bushes or trees. The photo of the cardinal and blue jay are excellent--but who doesn't already know what these birds look like? Also there was too much information on habitat and migration patterns. I suppose that some people would think this was important. All I know is that there are dozens of gray birds feeding my backyard and I still don't know what most of them are called.

I'm going to buy another book, hopefully with larger pictures.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Reference.......2000-02-28

Birds of the Carolinas is an essential reference for the hobiest. It is particularly useful in identifying transients, and in differentiating between similar species based on habitat and time of year. The book contains excellent photographs of most (but not all) of the species referenced.

3 out of 5 stars Ahh Youth, Wasted and Wondered On...........2004-12-24

I'd like to see this play. Why? Because there is an incredible amount of angst, self-pity, self-agrandizment, posturing, emoting, and innocent awe. It is also short, surprisingly too.
Chance is a hyper-sexual ne'r' do'well whose coupling with Princess, a hyper-vain Hollywood Queen suffering from lose of face after an amazingly bad "come-back" film, lands them in Saint Cloud, Chance's old stomping grounds, and perhaps some sort of symbolic nowhere town, dead to the world and quite possibly changeless. His appearence is bad news, as he generally is bad news. Princess, who is significantly older is so wrapped in her vanity and stardom, or there-lack-of, has latched onto Chance, because they are similar and desperate for what each other has.
Sweet Bird of Youth is not a nice play. These are people who are not likeable, nor funny, and their desperation almost defines them. I say almost, because they are also passionate and hopeful, even in round about ways. They are symbols of Time's heavy hand, extravegance, unfortunate fame, addicts, wayward souls.
Sweet Bird of Youth belongs in the second tier of Williams' plays. After Streetcar, Cat, Glass, and with The Rose Tattoo, Suddenly, Last Summer, and Orpheus Descending. Full of loud, troubled people on point of lynching, whose sexual, or emotional hunger is suicidal and beyond reason. But lacking in broad connection to the world, in familial dynamics and struggle. In that way I recommend Sweet Bird of Youth for the Williams' lover or admirer, not someone who wants to know his best work.

5 out of 5 stars Like the rest of Williams' writings- absolutely brilliant.......1998-02-10

Don't see the movie instead of reading the play, in fact, don't see the movie at all, because it is TERRIBLE. It changes the ending completely, and lacks the overall spirit of the play. With "Sweet Bird of Youth," Williams has created something touching and brilliant. If you like Williams' other plays, you will like this, but if not, you won't. A wonderful dramatic landmark. Amazing.

2 out of 5 stars Should be titled "All About SOME TN Birds".......2005-11-26

At first look, this is a terrific idea (a book on just my state) and the mechanics of it implementation (binding, size, etc) are excellent for a field guide. And the general Alsop books are well respected and thorough, with good information about the birds of larger geographic regions.

However, this book is flawed: it misses too many of the birds found in TN. For example, Alsop has two wrens (House and Carolina) but does not mention the Winter wren which spends the winter here in TN. He has the Red-eyed Vireo, but misses 4 other Vireo's.

It seems the book was written to a fixed number of pages. Once they were gone, the rest of the birds of TN got left out. About seventy of the 204 pages in the book are devoted to attracting and photographing birds. These are worthy topics, but not at the expense of leaving birds out. Identifying birds is the main purpose of field guides such as this, a purpose this one poorly fulfills.

If all the birds of TN were included, this would be an excellent choice for a TN resident or visitor. The ommission are so many that I have to keep my more general and complete (and larger and bulkier) bird field guides with me, making "All About TN Birds" redundant and unnecessary.

3 out of 5 stars Good Basic Birds of Tennessee Book.......2004-03-30

Good basic guide to the most common birds found in the state of Tennesse...isn't all inclusive though. Still a good beginning book or just all around bird guide.

              5 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2003-01-16

I am a beginning "backyard" bird-watcher and this book was very informative. I was easily able to identify many species by the pictures and descriptions in the book. I really enjoyed that this book was specifically about Tennessee birds. I didn't have to go through endless pages about birds that aren't even in my region.

Would suggest to any Tennessee bird-watcher.
