2 out of 5 stars Didn't care for this book.......2007-08-09

If your looking for a typical name this book is has way to many different names. We just used the top 100 names in the front of the book.

1 out of 5 stars Repeat, repeat, repeat.......2007-04-07

This book repeats names through out the entire book many times. Not really that good of a book. There definitely isn't 55,000 names in this book.

2 out of 5 stars Not useful :(.......2006-12-28

In my opinion there were too many names in this book. Most of them were the same names but were just spelled differently. And there were a lot of girl names in the boy section and vice versa. I thought it was poorly organized and edited. I did like the front section with the name lists and categories. But overall I was really disappointed in this book. Not a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars Very thorough.......2006-01-24

I looked through many baby name books and this one seemed to be very comprehensive. It has old and new, popular and old-fashioned names. Not only the familiar American names but other common names from around the world. If you're looking for definitions this book doesn't elaborate but gives a few words plus the origin and alternate spelling. There are also lists of the most popular names from different decades and different countries. This book will keep me busy for a while. I am very happy with my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars A Library Assistant's View.......2006-02-07

I'm from the Caribbean island of Trinidad and I work in the Information Industry. One of my duties involve previewing new books for shelf worthiness in the library. That means picking books that patrons will find easy to use and comprehensive. This book by Congemi (out of all the books of names and meanings that we have) tops the list. It was so popular that we had to keep it as a reference item. I say 'was' because, as happens to many of the better items in a library, it has gone missing. The last user gave bogus contact information. If you want to know how good a book is look at its usage in the library and find out how many times it had to be replaced. Right now we are anxiously awaiting our replacement copy. The best feature was the name index, with the choice of fonts and the friendly 'easy on the eyes' presentation of the material running a close second and third.

This book is interesting if you are just looking for name that sound different, but don't believe in what the author wrote.
As a French person, I had to have a look at the french section. I was really surprise to find names that were either not french at all or don't exist at all (like "beau", which is the french term for pretty or nice, but is not a name... please don't call your child "beau", it would make any French or french speaking person laugh!)
I have no way to know whether the rest of the book was writen the same way, but how could I trust it now?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Hero Lansky one of his best.......2005-08-04

This is a worldly challange for mister Lansky. I loved this book all the way to number 9 on my top of the top book list. the only problem was not enough different spellings for names. but our hero fixed that in Mother of All Baby Names wow.

3 out of 5 stars a fun guide, but I would recommend additional research.......2003-10-03

The best part of this book is the adorable illustration on the cover -- If you're looking for an unusual, foreign name for your child, particularly from a country or culture that is not in the mainstream (Tamile, Twi, Zulu, Zuni, Kakwa, Kukuyu -- you get the idea) this book would provide a good starting point, but I would certainly do additional research to confirm that the definitions and spellings are accurate. One section of the book lists names by country of origin. The largest section of the book provides a dictionary-style listing of names, definitions, and variations for boys and girls. I get a sense that the lists of international names are sometimes little more than lists of international words, some of which may not be well-suited for a name. There's also very little (make that no) information on how parents in different cultures choose to name their babies, so a name that makes sense in a foreign culture may make no sense in American culture. One of the reviewers below comments that when he saw the name "Starbuck", he put this book down. I've found that all of the baby name books contain names I wouldn't dream of imposing on a child (names like Eleven) and the trend in naming books is toward the unique -- I don't know that this book is any different. In any event, naming a child is a very personal decision and this book could provide a fun, useful starting point.

1 out of 5 stars Winner: the worst book of baby names I found!.......2003-05-10

Before becoming a dad (well, I will be one in October), if you paid to me I would have never guessed I'd be reading a book on this topic today, but you see: here I am, browsing through a handful of books off of the shelves looking for ideas. Here's our case: my wife and I wanted to name our baby with a beautiful name (how original, huh?) that is not repeated anywhere near (family and close friends) and that plays well both ways, in English AND Spanish without anyone needing to twist their mouths to pronounce it.

I had a chance to check out this book and found it to be a waste of anyone's time and one with a misleading title. After a few lists of top 10 and top 100 names under different criteria (which you can get off the Internet without much effort) it goes into a list of names supposedly from different countries that, more than names sound like figments from the author's imagination. Here goes the worst example of what I don't want to see anyone named: for a boy, "STARBUCK". This is an actual suggestion from the author!! I am NOT kidding. When I saw this, I closed the book. It officially topped the list of worst baby name books I reviewed today. I recommend "A World of Baby Names" or "From Aaron to Zoe".

4 out of 5 stars I think I'll name my kids from this book........2001-05-14

Having seen so much of the world, I have become very interested in giving my future kids very meaningful names. It is nice to see the inclusion of names from countries other than Europe and North America.

1 out of 5 stars Incorrect information in Baby Names around the World.......2000-08-07

In the lists of names from Scandinavia, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland about halv of the names are not first names. Many "names" are unknown as names and words at all. There are a lot of surnames. Ola is not a girl's name, but a boy's, and Bodil, Inger, Mette and Valborg is not a boy's name. Kari is not a typical Danish name, but a Norwegian. Also some misspellings.

For other languages I find that Charles is German, that Che is Spanish for José, Ivar is a variant of Ivor og Ivo, Yves is a French form of Ivar. Van (p. 381) and Von (p. 383) are short forms of first names. Mac is a Scottish first names for boys. All this do no correspond to my information from other sources. In the lists of German, French and Spanish first names there are a lot of surnames. But may be all the surnames in the English-list also is used at first names for boys?

4 out of 5 stars Top of The Top 15.......2005-08-09

A wonderful name book Creative and great Lamsky is King and I still love all the crazy spellings.

5 out of 5 stars Good Source for Naming Characters in Stories.......2003-11-20

I enjoy writing stories and since most of them are set in either fantasy worlds and worlds that are like ours, no magic, but still made up, I need a book of names that lists names besides the normal everyday names and this book provides that. The spellings may be creative but they have given me plenty of ideas for having characters with names that are similar to the normal names of today but still different enough to sound otherwordly.

I have no idea as to the accuracy of the meanings of the names since all my baby name books contradict each other for the more unusual ones anyway.

This may not be the best book for parents wanting to name their child, though I have found several names I would love to use for my children when I have them. Normal sounding but unusual enough not to have twenty other children running around with the same name in the park.

All in all I loved this book. It may have its flaws but whenever I need a name for a character I turn to it more often than any of my other ten name books since it is the one of the ones with the unusual names and different spellings.

2 out of 5 stars Full of mistakes and out of touch.......2003-07-08

I have to echo the earlier reviewer about this book's treatment of names from different cultures. The author proudly proclaims that he's broadened his cultural reach with this book, with new suggestions for Spanish names -- Sierra and Nevada!! -- and French names -- Brie and Chardonnay!!! It seems that his cultural research didn't extend past the contents of his refrigerator.

1 out of 5 stars This book is dreadful.......2003-02-18

The names are bizarre and the tally is ridiculous. They consider "Ceejay" a name, short for C.J. Enough said.

1 out of 5 stars Where is the info coming from?.......2002-01-06

I'm not sure what qualifications Lansky has to write baby name books, but etymologist and onomastician isn't one of them. No one can be an expert on the naming practices of so many cultures, a point that Lansky beautifully demonstrates. His Arabic and Asian sections are way off. Indeed, he must have culled his information from video games, novels and popular misconceptions. For instance he lists Joss as a Chinese name when Joss in fact comes from the Portuguese word for god, "deos". This combination of sounds does not even occur in Chinese! Another is Raiden in the Japanese section, a video game character and not a name the Japanese would give to a person--sort of like naming a baby "Pac-Man". What'll be in the next revision? Pokemon? Additionally, Chinese and Arabic names are simply everyday words used as names, so that there isn't a special pool of names to pick from. The rest of the sections are equally sloppy and suspect. If you really want a name from a specific ethnicity I would suggest getting a book concentrating on just that culture instead.

              Book Description

As a combat medical aidman of Company B, 1st Medical Battalion, First Infantry Division, Allen N. Towne experienced some of the pivotal events of World War II. "Doctor B," as his unit was known, was attached to the 18th Regimental Combat Team and moved with them, providing continuous close medical support. Covering both little-known engagements, and such historic moments as the campaign in Sicily and the D Day landings at Omaha Beach, this book is both a memoir and a history of one of the war's most impressive units. The text is based on both official "morning reports" and the author's personal notes, providing accuracy as well as human insight. In Doctor Danger Forward ("danger forward" was the code name of the First Division headquarters), Towne, who received the Bronze Star and Oak Leaf Cluster for his heroism at Omaha Beach and Normandy, chronicles events both epic and intimate, profoundly serious as well as humorous. There are numerous maps and photographs, including many taken by the author.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars A good read.......2005-07-30

This is one of the few books that deal with the combat medic. For the most part the medics roll is just a foot note in other works but this writing is all about the medics of the 1st Division.

Sgt. Towne basically took his day reports and added his commentary to give a more complete picture of the day to day activities of Company B. It is not a polished historical read like you would expect form Ambrose, but I feel Sgt Towne's perspective (as a true to life, been there done that) gives him the view point that other historians could only wish they had.

This book was of particular interest to me; do to the fact that my father was as a platoon leader in Company B, from April to August 1944. His name was briefly mentioned when he was wounded on August 6th (my father was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his action on this day). I was able to locate the general movements of my father but disappointingly not specific actions. Many of Sgt. Towne's commentaries refer to other platoons but not by name; however I feel that I did gain a lot of information that is not located in any other writing.

I would recommend this book to all.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding my father.......2000-09-30

My father served with the author and is in a few of the pictures and anecdotes. I have a greater understanding and appreciation of what war is all about. Dad did not want to talk about what he saw and experienced when he was alive. He shared his scrapbooks on a few occasions, dodging some questions that were too close to him.

When Dad died, I sent a letter to "the outfit" as he referred to the men with whom he served. I had some wonderful letters and calls from men who had shared a part of his life that I never knew. But, I now know better from reading this book, the courage and determination that these men showed just to survive the day to day part of the war. The horrors that these men shared needed to be buried until someone could put them into a context for the rest of us to truly understand and appreciate them. The author has done that in a vivid, yet compassionate manner. Everyone needs to read this book. Thank you, Mr. Towne for revealing this part of the war to the rest of us.

5 out of 5 stars DOCTOR DANGER FORWARD.......2000-03-20

If you want to learn what it was really like fighting to save lives with the U.S. Medical Corps in World War II, give this newly released personal account by Allen N. Towne a try. Mr. Towne relates his five years'service as a frontline medic with the First Infantry Division in North Africa, Sicily, Omaha Beach, as well as France, Belgium, and Germany. He carries you along with him as a former college student who finds himself in the thick of some of the war's bloodiest battles. You will find it difficult not to read it straight through in one sitting.

5 out of 5 stars Intriguing Personal Saga.......2000-03-10

I thought this book captured the essence of the tumult of three years of combat. I was spellbound by the way relationships developed and deepened. The author raised the question of why men respond so differently to the trauma of combat and war. A well-written story.

This is an excellent book. It's very informative. This is my first year to put up a Martin House. I learned a lot from reading this book.

An excellent book with suggestions on how to attract and keep martins in your backyard.

Twenty years ago the air above the narrow street outside our little row house in Costa Rica used to teem with swallows dashing about in the later afternoon coolness. I loved to watch their antics, finding in their effortless twists and turns a vicarious agility.

When we moved house and the swallows were no longer part of our end-of-day joys, I knew that I must someday remedy this situation by having a Purple Martin house that would persuade the similar martins to take us into their company.

It's March, 2007 in Indianapolis and a late snow lies on the ground. The Martins will be here within weeks if prognostications are accurate. From the comfort of my easy chair and a laptop bookmarked to several vendors of Purple Martin houses, I've read through the excellent Stokes Guide.

These people have a rare gift for understanding the bird in question but also for speaking to the level of the interested, reasonably intelligent novice, a reader who knows very little of the topic but is capable of getting up to speed with just a little help.

That assistance comes in the form of inviting prose and beautiful photos, all presented in an affordable format.

I know a whole lot more about Purple Martins than I did just an hour ago and am just about to order that house and telescoping pole. Heck, this frozen ground can't last forever and those newbie Martins will be looking for a place to call home.

                  We'll leave the light on.

5 out of 5 stars Everything I wanted to know about attracting Purple Martins!.......2002-01-15

My husband and I invested in a Purple Martin House, but didn't have a clue how to entice them to our back yard! I have several of the Stokes bird books and have always found them informative, easy to use, and excellent photography. I found all of this to be true in their Purple Martin Book. The book starts with Purple Martin basics, how to attract, and something I hadn't even thought of, when to expect their arrival. Each section of their breeding range has a different date, the Gulf Coast being approximately Feb. 1st, so I need to get ready in a hurry! Also covered, is their behavior, selecting housing, egg laying to leaving the nest. Dealing with predators and parasites. I don't think there was a "stone uncovered"!If you just enjoy learning about birds, this book is a joy. For me, I am hoping in a few short weeks, I'll be a Purple Martin landlord!

5 out of 5 stars An essential book for Purple Martin landlords.......2000-08-12

Educate yourself before you buy a Purple Martin house. Reading this book is a great beginning. Many houses sold are not suitable and you will end up with a sparrow house. The Stokes have thorough information and nice photographs in their book. I also recommend you join the PMCA (Purple Martin Conservation Association), Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, Edinboro, PA, 16444 if you are serious about being a martin landlord.
