Book Description
What causes autism? What happens to children with autism when they grow up? Does autism run in families? What kind of educational setting is best? In collaboration with the National Autistic Society, the authors have discovered the questions on the minds of parents and professionals, and have attempted to answer them. Autism is a puzzling disorder. It begins in early childhood, and disrupts many aspects of development, leaving the child unable to form social relationships or communicate in the usual way. This fascinating book explains in a clear, straighforward manner what is known about the condition. It also provides helpful information about all the relevant organizations. Written first and foremost as a guide for parents, but required reading for interested professionals, it covers the recognition and diagnosis of autism, its biological and physiological causes, and the various treatments and educational techniques available. It presents the facts, allowing the reader to take an informed position about children with autism.
Customer Reviews:
Bravo for the authors, not for the publisher.......2002-10-07
An excellent and straightforward primer on the hows and whys of autism, written by two of the leading autism researchers. If you're new to the subject, then this overview is a good way to get up to speed.
I do have one complaint: [$] for a 113 page paperback is extortionate, plain and simple -- especially when it's largely being charged to the parents of disabled children. As a writer myself, I know that this is not the author's fault... it's the publisher. OUP, you should be ashamed of yourselves. Next edition, do the decent thing and drop it down to $...
Still, don't let this complaint put you off. If you have a family member or acquaintance who has recently been diagnosed with autism, don't hesitate: just buy it.

Book Description
She’ll take Manhattan. He’ll take Managua. When two ambitious reporters from the same New York newspaper get married, something’s got to give. And in this wry, witty tale of a modern globe-spanning romance, what gives is the conventional and the expected–as fact turns more fantastic than fiction.
Jim Mulvaney has never met a story he didn’t think he could write. Barbara Fischkin isn’t sure she can write anything in the midst of their maddening marriage. But while Mulvaney is following his legendary nose for war, disaster, and scandal, sending them careening from Central America to Beijing, Fischkin is finding the stories between the lines–and they’re both learning the real inside scoop from baby Jack and his big brother Danny…the most revolutionary sources of all.
Customer Reviews:
And They Called it Yuppie Love..........2007-01-20
Barbara and Jim Mulvaney (called Mulvaney) are globe trotting reporters, each trying to outdo the other. This "sequel" to "Exclusive" follows these reporters to Nicaragua on assignment from "Long Island Newsday." At one point Mulvaney buys a baby girl from a poor family and presents her to Barbara, who is understandably nonplussed. After a short period of raising the girl named Caridad ("Charity" in Spanish, named by Mulvaney because the girl had previously gone unnamed), Barbara's mother comes to visit from Brooklyn. On page 129 it is said that the baby leaves, but where Caridad went or who ended up raising her is never said.
Mulvaney somehow manages to get them expelled from the country, so it's on to Mexico. Their son Danny was born there in 1987. After some humorous descriptions of the local protocol, the trio travels to Hong Kong. Danny becomes trilingual, speaking Spanish, English and some Cantonese. While both are searching the globe for that breakthrough story, meanwhile their sons are providing them with news from the home front.
Danny's brother Jack was born shortly after Danny's third birthday; Danny suffers from a severe ear infection and fever. The once verbal child becomes nonverbal and exhibiting autistic behavior. Within a short space of time, he is displaying behavior suggestive of Kanner's autism.
The family returns to the U.S. and settles in California and later, Long Island. The boys grow and thrive; Jack's input makes a good story even better. One especially funny anecdote is found at the beginning of the book. Mulvaney acted a fool at Jack's hockey game and was understandably asked to leave. A copy of the Code of Conduct at the games is included and one can only smile at Jack's take on this as well.
My favorite parts were where Jack describes Danny's behavior and how he accepts him unconditionally. I love the way Jack makes it plain that Danny is a valuable and vital human being with a lot of gifts to share and offer. Hats off to Jack!
A good book. The only thing that could be considered confusing is where the fiction leaves off and real life reporting of their lives begins.
an honest, funny, and original voice.......2006-12-18
In telling the "Mulvaney-true" story of her marriage and life as a reporter, Barbara Fischkin gets to the heart of "true-true." She's funny and warm as she embellishes on reality, taking the reader from the slums of Mexico City to the high-rise expatriate enclaves of Hong Kong to the mountain haunt of Filipino rebels to ringside at a Long Island hockey rink. Barbara hits right on the nose the trade-off that journalists wrestle between the adrenaline rush of reporting a story and the power of personal relationships. Read this book and her first novel, Exclusive: Reporters in Love and War. You won't be sorry!
Confidential Sources confirms that Barbara Fischkin has penned another winner!.......2006-12-01
Stop the presses! Confidential Sources confirms that Barbara Fischkin has penned another winner! In her delightful sequel to Exclusive: Reporters in Love...and War, she once again brings her readers along for a wild ride following the escapades of two globe-trotting investigative journalists, "Fischkin" and "Mulvaney." An engaging tale, often poignant yet always entertaining, that allows us to vicariously live the exciting lives of husband and wife reporters searching out that next big news story as they build their careers and along the way, their family. Although the protagonists of Confidential Sources have the same names as the author and her husband, they are fictional characters. Or perhaps, better said, the fictional alter-egos of the real-life Barbara Fischkin and Jim Mulvaney!
Fischkin shows us that life is often like following a juicy news lead; the story you finally report is far different, yet far more interesting, than what you first anticipated. In tandem with her journey to scooping the next big news story from her husband, the Pulitzer Prize winning investigative journalist, Jim Mulvaney, she graces her readers with a honest look into the world of autism. With her wry humor intact, Fischkin portrays the heartache, anger, fear and even moments of sheer joy that every family experiences when raising a child diagnosed with autism.
In a delightful surprise chapter written in the voice of her younger son, Jack, one gains insight on how dramatically life is impacted both good and bad, for children living with an autistic sibling. If the real-life Jack is as good a writer as his fictional alter-ego, then the Mulvaney/Fischkin writing talent is secure for another generation. Even at his young age, "Jack Mulvaney" the character has wisdom beyond his years: He recognizes that his older brother, Danny, even without speech and language since a toddler, has many gifts to share, not only with his family but with humanity as well. What a service this book does by showing us how precious life can be when parents fully love and accept every child regardless of obstacles.
If you only read one book this year, it must be Confidential Sources!
Thank you Barbara!.......2006-11-03
Thank you Barbara for finally offering a refreshing narrative on what life is like with an autistic child, as well as how she continues on as "normal" as possible for your other child and career. Barbara treats the reader like a best friend and it helps to abate the loneliness that is often a major part of a parent's life with autism. Now if only I had a large block of time to sit and read the entire book in one sitting!

The American Civil War in Indian Territory (Elite)
ASIN: 081170016X |
Book Description
Inexperienced Union and Confederate soldiers in the West waged numerous bloody campaigns against the Indians during the Civil War. Fighting with a distinct geographical advantage, many tribes terrorized the territory from the Plains to the Pacific, as American pioneers moved west in greater numbers. These noteworthy--and notorious--Indian campaigns featured a fascinating cast of colorful characters, and were set against the wild, desolate, and untamed territories of the western United States. This is the first book to explore Indian conflicts that took place during the Civil War and documents both Union and Confederate encounters with hostile Indians blocking western expansion.
Customer Reviews:
Most Readable!.......2006-08-25
This may be the first work dedicated solely to chronicling the numerous campaigns waged against the Indians in the West during the War Between the States, 1861-1865. Perhaps more Indians - and possibly more Americans - were killed during this time period than any other comparable four year period of the Indian Wars in our history. Yet most Americans are quite ignorant of all that transpired in these Indian campaigns no doubt due to the overarching dominance of that most sanguinary other War. Both Confederate and Federal soldiers had to maintain two front wars - against each other and the Indians. In each nation manpower drains for the main war were such that all too often the campaigns for frontier survival were fought with untrained and inexperienced militia. The Indians comprehended all of this and many acted with great mischief.
Concomitantly the War Between the States also divided the loyalties of many tribes with organized units fighting for both the Confederacy (who had Indian nations' representatives in their congress with the intention of eventually bringing them in as their own states) and the Union. We must not lose sight of the fact that the last commissioned general in the Confederacy to surrender was Cherokee chief Brigadier General Stand Watie on 23 June 1865.
Although this well written eminently readable book fills in a much needed gap in understanding our history of the many campaigns with the various Indian tribes during this time period, it is woefully lacking more in its analysis and descriptions of the campaigns in the Confederacy. There are only several paragraphs outlining these skirmishes and battles. The title of this work certainly suggests more than what is provided. Much has yet to be researched and written hereon. And, we know that there were many fights worth relating with the Indians on the "Southron" frontier. See, e.g., BOURLAND IN NORTH TEXAS AND INDIAN TERRITORY DURING THE CIVIL WAR: Fort Cobb, Fort Arbuckle & The Wichita Mountains, by Patricia Adkins-Rochette (2006). For the open-minded researcher, this is a field of history still in dire need!
Nonetheless, those campaigns described are fascinating. The author leads us through several of the bloody battles between partisan Indian tribes during the War Between the States explaining the politics of it all (this is well done - it can be most confusing) with the consequences to each side. Even history enthusiasts for the War are frequently uninformed with reference to the fratricidal intra-Indian campaigns. He then goes into the several Apache campaigns, the Great Sioux Uprising of 1862 in Minnesota wherein scores of quite innocent newly arrived German immigrants were massacred and worse, the Bear River Massacre, the Woolsey Expedition, Northern and Southern Plains vengeance, and ultimately the woeful Sand Creek Massacre.
Of note, the Sioux War of 1862 caused the burning of much of the town of New Ulm - 190 houses, and culminated after several set battles with the largest mass hanging under the colour of law in American history on American soil. On 26 December 1862, after receiving approval by Union President Abraham Lincoln, 38 Indians were publicly hanged for their depredations in this war.
This book is excellent. It is recommended - its noted blemishes aside - to the serious student of the Indian Wars.

While interest focused on the East.......2003-04-01
Exacerbated by broken treaties, all across the West tensions and conflict arose between Indians and the steady, inexorable march West of white settlers. During the Civil War years, civilians and troops (mostly Blue) failed to solve the problem on multiple miniature battlefields. This book does an excellent job of describing the specific conditions and repercussions in nine areas where Indians attempted to maintain their traditional lifestyle.
An often-overlooked sidebar of the American Civil War.......2003-03-09
The Blue, The Gray, & The Red: Indian Campaigns Of The Civil War by western historian Thom Hatch focuses on an often-overlooked sidebar of the American Civil War -- the western campaigns that took place during the years of 1861 to 1865 and which resulted in the deaths of more Native Americans than in any other historical period of United States history. Heavily researched and superbly presented, The Blue, The Gray, & The Red is a much-appreciated and strongly recommended addition to Civil War Studies and Native American Studies reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

Book Description
GenXpat: The Young Professional's Guide to Making a Successful Life Abroad is the first guide written for the new generation of young, internationally and culturally mobile professionals. These young professionals from "Generation X" - the generation most broadly defined as between the ages of 24 and 39 - are more than 62 million nationwide* and have their own unique set of challenges. Often single and in the earlier stages of their careers, GenXpats tend to go into their expat experience dramatically unprepared and underserved.
Wrapped up in fast-paced careers that increasingly involve travel and frequent international relocation, many young people find themselves bouncing from one exotic assignment to another at the cost of work/life balance, meaningful relationships and a sense of continuity or connection. Margaret Malewski, who has lived the "GenXpat" life, wrote GenXpat to help young professionals achieve the personal fulfillment they need to succeed in their international careers, including information on how to:
- make an informed to decision to move
- optimize an expat contract to ensure their personal needs are met
- juggle work and relocation logistics
- deal with culture shock and cultural differences
- build social networks abroad
- manage the question of romantic relationships, be it by dating across cultures, embarking on a long-distance relationship or moving with a partner
- prepare a smooth re-entry to the home country, workforce and culture
Full of real-life examples from GenXpats who are now working for multinational companies, GenXpat explains what to expect when starting an expat adventure.
Customer Reviews:
Short and simple survival manual for young expats.......2006-03-08
Author Margaret Malewski has a clear thesis and works hard to prove it. She contends that Generation X (that's Gen X, born between 1964 and 1981) expatriates have distinct needs and concerns that differentiate them from previous generations of expatriates. Malewski provides a fairly comprehensive survey of the issues that most expatriates encounter on their sojourns abroad. She pays particular attention to those affecting younger professionals, especially relationship and romance issues. This is one of the few books about expatriate life that addresses, for example, the problems encountered by co-habiting partners and the sensitive issues of cross-cultural dating. Some of her conclusions may seem a bit obvious to the internationalized Internet generation, but we acknowledge that her warnings about culture shock and career challenges are well informed. This book certainly could be helpful to those sheltered Gen Xers when they go overseas to work. The author proves that they have a distinctive problem - and having defined the issue, she sets out solidly to address it.
A very good start.......2006-02-10
This book is quite a good start for anyone preparing for a life overseas. I'm in the middle of such an adventure; this book and "Expert Expatriate" have both been most helpful (supplemented by region-specific titles, of course), specifically in the strategic planning - grasping the multitude of details, professional and personal, associated with such a move. It framed a lot of questions in the proper light for me, starting with my reasons and expectations for moving overseas, down to the details of how to maintain my personal relationships after the move. She starts each chapter with an anecdote or mini-case study to introduce the larger ideas - a really great balance between readability and information. It is geared towards readers younger, or without families to move, and is written by someone who grew up with the internet (avoiding the inevitable and ridiculous phrases one might find elsewhere, such as, "The Internet is a wonderful resource for information. Email is a powerful tool for the traveler.") A good book for planning an overseas move, especially for the younger generation. See "Expert Expat" also.
Essential info for the global worker.......2005-09-23
Margaret Malewski provides some much-needed advice for a massively growing (but until now neglected) group - the have-laptop-will-work -abroad young person. The chapter on negotiating your contract is worth the price of the book alone. An essential part of the global worker's toolkit.
A must-have for any young professional heading abroad for the first time.......2005-08-31
When I moved to Milan several years ago, I thought I had everything under control. It's only now that I'm a relocation consultant I realise I could have secured myself a better expat package. The chapter on negotiating in Malewski's book is a must-read for anyone relocating to a foreign country (and not just for GenXpat either) and the rest of the book contains plenty of food-for-thought, too. This book not only gives a clear idea on the ups and downs on expat life, it also provides solutions.
A positive "preview".......2005-04-15
I have pre-ordered a copy, but have not yet read it, so I am recommending this based on my high opinion of the author, who did not ask me to write this. Margaret helped me plan the research for Primacy Relocation and the Employee Relocation Council's annual survey "BBest Cities for Relocating Singles." Her guidance helped make our ranking of U.S. cities' adaptibility for transferring newcomers more accurate and useful. She understands her subject matter both professionally and personally.

Product Description
The story of an American girl's year of study in France During her junior year at Park College, Missouri, Judy du Jardin, daughter of author Rosamond du Jardin, studied in France for a year at Aix-en Provence. Rosamond du Jardin said of this book, "This is a different sort of book. All of the characters in it are real people, although some of their names have been changed. Every single incident related here really happened. Judy is my youngest daughter and the letters she wrote home from France during her year's study there were so entertaining and filled with adventures, I thought teen-agers everywhere might enjoy them. And so, together, we have adapted them into a book. The story is entirely from Judy's viewpoint; in a great many parts it is in her own words. And I hope that girls who have enjoyed reading about Tobey, and Marcy, and the twins, Pam and Penny, will enjoy Judy's story too."

Book Description
Vivid, immediate, and irreverent, a memoir of a young woman's coming-of-age in London during the 1950's.
When Nora Sayre arrived in London she quickly joined a circle of artists, many of them blacklisted Americans. On the Wing is a wry, elegant, and exacting account of an extraordinary group of people --Graham Greene, Oona and Charlie Chaplin, Tyrone Power, Cyril Connolly, A. J. Liebling, and many more.

A Young Woman Abroad with Colorful Friends!.......2006-09-22
I will tell you the truth that I only purchased this book because of the author's relationship with Mai Zetterling which was platonic. I was fascinated by Mai's life ever since I saw her in The Witches. I read her autobiography but I wanted to know more about her life. Well, the author knew Mai Zetterling very well and her children. I felt that the author should have had an index for all the name dropping that goes on. Nora Sayre was young and promising woman when she left New York for London where she writes about her memoirs. The book is written to include names of celebrities and other memorable characters. I liked this book because it also offered a side to Mai Zetterling who I think is forgotten by the film community. She was a remarkable woman who admitted failing as a mother. Mai didn't want children and had her daughter and son, Etienne Lemkow and Dr. Louis Lemkow Zetterling with Tutte Lemkow. She was a character beloved by people like Nora Sayre. The book is well-written and and an easy read but needs an index.
