Book Description
Today’s parents are supposed to enjoy the “freedom” to have it all—high-powered careers, passionate partnerships, and brilliant, well-mannered children. That’s the spin, at least, from those who have never tried to balance the needs of bosses, spouses, and those demanding little people. Unlike guidebooks or workbooks that simply replace stress with guilt, or that offer tips most parents don’t find applicable, Three-Ring Circus offers a variety of real situations and honest stories. Parents will find comfort—and genuine solutions—in this frank collection of first-person accounts that includes married paramedics who work tag-team shifts to care for their four children, confessions of a working mom who finds the challenges of her career infinitely easier than appeasing two kids home sick from daycare, and a dad who shaped his journalism career around his children’s lives and wouldn’t have it any other way. In all, thirty moms and dads weigh in on making it all work—and knowing what to let go in the name of sanity.

Hero's.......2004-08-17
I like to look for hero's. Parents are one that earn the title. Working parents? "Three-Ring Circus" narrows the media-made cavern between the wars and misconceptions of stay at home parents against those who work. I get to stay home with our two kids. It humbled me to see how hard these parents WORK to BE THERE for their kids. This once viewed "cavern" is narrowed with plain talk of parents who absolutely love their kids, deal with life's struggles, challenges and show the committment of hanging in there all in trying to keep the balance in life. That's a hero I can look up to!

How do they do it ? A great book on juggling acts of familes.......2004-08-10
In Three- Ring Circus, Rosanne Welch and Dawn Comer Jefferson have taken on a remarkable task in coordinating this refreshing and varied collection of stories, insights, and incidents in the world of parenting. Good Advice goes hand in hand with comfort and no advice as shift-working couples, single parents, and stay -at- home dads meet the complex and "normal" juggling acts of family and somehow pull through.
Newborn wonder, post-partum depression, teenage angst, mommies' night out and caregiver crisis tales are shared as each parent comes to terms that there is no one right way to raise a family.
Listen to closely to the individual "performers" in the stories and see how their voices echo the different style of acts within this Three- Ring Circus of marriage, work and family.
A great book for new families, friends of new parents, and working people everywhere, this collection will help both bosses and co- workers gain a perspective into the delicate acts of "how they do it."
"And Baby Makes Three - Ring Circus".......2004-07-19
The title of this book summarizes the theme of this compilation of essays edited by Dawn Comer Jefferson and Rosanne Welch. Couples share their experiences juggling marriage, work, and family (and their resulting guilt, angst, and frustration)as well as their joy in being parents. Most essays are written by either the mother or the father, although one is an interview of both parents. Parenthood is explored by working moms, down-sized dads, self-employed parents, stay-at-home parents, and those with alternative lifestyles. Their perspectives may be different, but they share many of the same emotions about the 24/7 job of multi-tasking in order to achieve a financially and emotionally secure family life.
I found this book to be both entertaining and informative. As a working mother of an eleven year-old girl and a wife of nearly twenty years, I could easily relate to the reactions of these parents in many of the situations they described. While reading, my ever-present questions were "Did they feel that way also?" and "What did he/she do about the situation?" Their reactions assured me that I'm not the only parent who struggles
with the balance of work and family and allowed me to see how they dealt with similar situations. I gave myself a pat on the back for having created a more organized environment than I prevously thought and breathed a sigh of relief that my life was less complicated than some revealed in these essays. This book inspired me to continue my own bancing act with fewer feelings of isolation and more self-confidence.
"Three-Ring..." says it all!.......2004-06-29
Three-Ring Circus is a reassuring manuel not only on the parenting experience but how we view ourselves and our life around us. I found the honest, first hand accounts of the world of parenting, career and relationships in this book, to be very reassuring. As a parent myself, It's very easy to slip into days of self doubt and just getting by. The healing part of Three-Ring Circus is that it offers encouragement in shared experiences that prove very comforting.
Chaos Can Be Okay.......2004-05-15
What a maddening culture we live in... here are real-life stories of caring people who chose to share their love with children, and it seems that no matter how hard they try to juggle all the things they expect to get out of life - mutually supportive marriage, tidy home, healthy kids, satisfying career - most of them start by beating themselves up because things aren't perfect!
These are heroic tales of men and women learning to let go of their assumptions about a life without flaws, be responsible for the consequences of their choices, and discover the daily joy of being present with both themselves and their children, especially when that looks and feels like chaos.
This is a great book for parents, grand-parents, anyone considering becoming a parent, and even those who've chosen not to become parents, because this collection reveals how much of a grip the myth of unattainable perfection has on our hearts, while simultaneously dramatizing the ways courageous individuals and couples are succeeding in breaking open the emotional prisons of fairy-tale gender roles and unsustainable upward financial mobility in order to simply enjoy their lives.

A Picture Book.......2004-05-05
In the intro, the author describes his enthusiasm for antique maps. The book is nothing more than an exhibit of his collection. His descriptions of events in the French & Indian Wars are cursory at best, with references to his maps on nearly every page. His 118 illustrations, nearly all maps, consume over half of the pages. A very disappointing purchase. Believe me, you won't learn a lot from this book!
A good beginning summary of the FIW..........2003-05-06
This book has a very good summary of the French and Indian War. Almost every page is filled with etchings, drawings, or maps. The maps are mostly historical rather than computer generated maps, and it was a quick read, primarily because without the pictures it is only about 100 pages of text.
The text goes into some of the main movements of the war as well as the actual events, and it is written in a lively fashion. A good pickup.
Well written, many visual aids.......2002-10-20
This is a well written, concise history of the French and Indian War. It begins with George Washington's mission (1753-1754) to tell the French to get out of the territory, which is important as that is really what starts events in motion that leads to the war. The book covers the rest of the war as well. It can be read in an hour or two. It also contains many wonderful "prints, drawings, maps and portraits." For a concise history of the war, this is an excellent book.
For those interested in a more indepth history, Wilderness Empire by Eckert (for an exciting historical narrative type of writing), Montcalm and Wolfe by Parkman, or Crucible of War by Anderson would be better choices. However, these three books are very, very long indepth hitories.
If one is looking for a well-written, concise history of the War with a multitude of visual aids, then this is THE book. A good book also for those already having a knowledge of the period, who wish to study maps concerning the war. A good book for students also, who are looking for a basic understanding of the war, its causes, and its results.
I rated this book a 3 as a book in general, but if judged as a "concise history of the war with lots of visual aids," it would be a 5. Homeschoolers rejoice!
The Condensed History of The French and Indian War.......2000-12-30
Schwartz's book "The French and Indian War" is a good, general book about what in Europe was called the Seven Years War. It provides a good foundation of the time-line of engagements, major events of the conflict, and includes numerous historical maps from the period. Overall, I enjoyed the book, but I would of liked to have had a little more detail and depth on the actions of the combats. It was an easy read (about 1 -2 hours) and easily explains the major military events of this first major warfare between European powers (and colonist) that occurred on the continent that would become the United States of America.

Book Description
The multi-hued and wildly diverse fish that defied nature and tradition by swimming through the highways and byways of Baltimore during the summer of 2001 belonged to Fish Out of Water, an urban art exhibit on a grand scale.
The fin-tastic project fired the imagination of local residents and tourists alike. When people discovered their first fish, the quest was on! Not wanting to miss a single ichthyaerius Baltimoris (the scientific name bestowed on the fish), groups organized walks to discoverand often to photographevery one of the 180 finned creatures that graced the Inner Harbor and other city neighborhoods.
`Twas whispered that the fish were magic: they had the power to make peopleeven grumpy onesbreak out in smiles; they caused total strangers to chat and joke with each other; they seemed to beget good will and to set children to skipping from fish to fish. Folks who went "fishing" discovered a "chicken of the sea," a "fish tank," a "clown" fish, a "plane ol' fish" complete with propellers, a "monk" fish with robe and tonsure, an "armored fish" and a multiplicity of other surprises that are displayed in this official book of the Fish Out of Water exhibit. Incredible talent and imagination produced fish covered by feathers and formstone, pennies and spoons, flora and fauna, and assorted other unusual items in a display of artistic splendor. Gallons of paint brought intricate and inventive designs to life. This book provides a permanent record and a sou-fin-ir of Baltimore's wonderful Fish Out of Water summer.
Even better, readers will discover that the magic still exists. If they need a smile, if they want to feel lighthearted, if they want to re-live the sheer delight of Fish Out of Water, they need only open the pages of this book and enjoy!

Not just another sailing book.......2004-10-16
Lydia Bird's story of her Atlantic crossing solo on her 42' sailboat Sonnet and her trip from the Azores to Greece with crew is well written and intriguing. This is not just another "how to" book about boating, but rather a psychological tale that is almost embarrassingly personal. Indeed it was too personal for my taste although I admit to finding it all interesting and well written. I felt like a voyeur at times reading a secret diary I had found unlocked. Lydia (I call her "Lydia" because by the end of the book you feel like you know her so well) also says some very personal and painful things about her family, her friends and their mates. Was such honesty really necessary? Hmmm...I wonder.
As a boater I found especially interesting that Lydia writes in detail about engine problems and hassles docking and undocking her boat, which in fact is what many of us sailors struggle with most. I found it refreshing that someone has written about the angst involved in these seemingly trivial events. In fact there's nothing quite so hair-raising as maneuvering around windswept docks in a sailboat, trying to get the thing into the slip without smashing something, while the engine threatens to stall. Most sailors have been there, trust me, but no else describes it like Lydia does. Lydia manages to capture the pathos and bathos of these sorts of situations.
And in my opinion her poetry is pretty good.
Whiny? No way!.......2002-01-03
This is one of the few books I could stand to read on this subject. Im so sick of reading storys about the "reluctant mate", and so happily read this book about a wife who wants to go more than her husband wants to go. ( I guess because I idnetify with it) It shows you to, that sialing away doesnt sail away from your problems - she has all the same issues out there on the water and with other crew mates as she would at home. The whole story was very entertaining...I hope I can do what shes done someday- either by myself, or dragging my husband aboard. It was soo soo good to read about a STRONG COMPETANT female sailor for a change! I hope she writes more!
A Deep and Personal Journey.......2001-01-15
As a woman who has crossed the Atlantic Ocean, Bird's book was a superb actualization of what I had experienced my self. In fact prior to my journey across the ocean I was seeking out a woman's voice which shared the interpersonal challenges of crossing an ocean. Bird's book depicts the clarity and raw emotions of such a journey. I resonated with her experience and truly appreciated the vulnerability with which she wrote and shared her story. I have found no other woman writer to provide this personal experience. Most write about provisioning, standing watches; the how tos of ocean crossings. Bird brings much more of the voyage to life. I highly recommend this book to people who want a personal account of sailing single-handed.
Impressive.......2000-12-17
I didn't want to put this book down. I found the relationships aspect most compelling, although the details of sailing, the weather, the boat itself, and the experiences at various marinas are crucial to the story, since all that creates the backdrop against which the human interactions, and the growth of the narrator, take place. I had to keep reminding myself it wasn't a novel. Also, having studied, and taught, a little American women's history, I kept seeing all four women as representative of various cultural prescriptions (and proscriptions) which most of us struggle with.
I found Monica (Bird's first crew member), fascinating. I saw her as a frightened woman, dishonest with herself as well as with others, doing what people who feel powerless often do, that is, try to control their world through manipulation.
I identified more with Elaine, at least on one front, since I'm the type who demands a life jacket if I embark on a canoe trip in a three-foot-deep lily pond. At the same time, I saw her as buying into the very patriarchal, male-dominated military system. Probably a very strong woman but maybe a little rigid and quick to judgment.
I liked very much the relationship that developed between the author and Skyli. The occasional descents into self-doubt, the constant self-examination and analysis of others seemed pretty typical of a female world. At one point, Bird (like the professor in My Fair Lady) wishes women could be more like men. But our tendency to read between the lines and second guess others has probably been our greatest survival mechanism.
In short, I was impressed. By the voyage, the author's willingness to risk in so many ways (with the elements and with relationships), and by the book itself. And I mustn't forget to mention the pure poetry of much of the prose.
Awful!.......2000-09-25
An anorexic woman whines her way across the Atlantic and Med. No sense of adventure or accomplishment to the feat - just an endless litany of angst and self-doubt laced with an empty, transparent pseudofeminism. Not really a book about a sailing adventure at all. In fact, if someone in your life is interested in sailing and you would like to discourage them - give them this book!

Hilbert Space Operators: A Problem Solving Approach
ASIN: 0817641742 |
Book Description
This book is aimed at a new generation of researchers and graduate students in the field. Written in a user-friendly, motivating style, fundamental topics are presented in a systematic fashion, i.e., set theory, algebraic structures, topological structures, Banach spaces, Hilbert Spaces, culminating with the Spectral Theorem, one of the landmarks in the theory of operators on Hilbert spaces. The exposition is concept-driven and as much as possible avoids the formula-computational approach. . Key features of this largely self-contained work include: * required background material to each chapter * fully rigorous proofs, over 300 of them, are specially tailored to the presentation and some are new * more than 100 examples and, in several cases, interesting counterexamples that demonstrate the frontiers of an important theorem * over 300 problems, many with hints * both problems and examples underscore further auxiliary results and extensions of the main theory; in this non-traditional framework, the reader is challenged and has a chance to prove the principal theorems anew. This work is an excellent text for the classroom as well as a self-study resource for researchers. Prerequisites include an introduction to analysis and to functions of a complex variable, which most first-year graduate students in mathematics, engineering, or another formal science have already acquired.
Customer Reviews:
Good introduction.......2005-05-30
I enjoyed reading this book. As another reviewer said, the proofs are a little too detailed. However, for my purposes, a little hand-holding was just what I needed. I haven't read any other books on the subject, so I can't make a thorough comparison. However, I have been reading sections of Conway's "A Course In Functional Analysis". Here are some surface differences.
1. Both books have a large number of typos and other errata. Both authors provide an errata page on the web. Conway's book is in it's third printing so as expected, it has fewer errata. In any case, most of the errata are typos that are easy to spot and fix on your own.
2. The proofs in Kubrusly's book are far more detailed than Conway's. As a result, you can read it much faster, but you don't get as much out of it.
3. Conway covers much more ground than Kubrusly. Some areas that I am interested in, Banach Algebras, the Riesz functional calculus, and unbounded operators are not covered at all in Kubrusly.
I have this complaint about Professor Kubrusly's proofs. It is not always clear exactly what he is proving. If the theorem is of the 'if and only if' type, he will start his proof without telling you which half he is doing. In the proof of the Arzela-Ascoli theorem, he doesn't tell you what he is proving until two pages after he starts the proof. I suppose this is not such a big deal since eventually you do find out what he is proving.
For someone like me who wants to go deeper into the field, this book is a good introduction, but requires you to read a second book. For someone who really only needs the material that is covered in the book, you will find it a painless introduction.
A useful book, great for the beginner.......2004-12-18
This is a very self-contained book on fundamentals of functional analysis. The pace is very slow and the proofs too detailed at times. This is particularly so in Chapter 5 on Hilbert Spaces. The good thing about this book are the problems at the end of each chapter. They are mostly standard problems and a lot of 'hints' are provided (as opposed to most books in this field). I have a number of books on functional analysis but often I go back to Kubrusly's for some fundamental notion. One downside is the brief treatment on the spectral theorem for normal operators, but I guess the author's intention was too avoid using measure theoretic results, which most engineering students are not familiar with. A great pick for the engineer seeking a better understanding of higher mathematics.
Simply Indispensable.......2004-01-10
This is a must have Analisys book. Although the modest title, the book is the best introduction to functional analysis ever written. More than this, its an indispensable first book for everyone interested in operator theory. It is clear, concise and all the exercises are really solvable. You feel that the autor wants to teach you. It requires only a modest (really!) background in linear algebra and calculus. At the end, you will have learned all real analysis that so many autors (and teachers!) always have hidden from you. There are so many math disclosure in the book that I'm afraid Kubrusly being at risk of attack from any xiita math (especially the mediocre one). I agree with the last reviewer, the book is an immediate classic and Kubrusly has turned himself into a kind of Salman Rushdie for his daring in writing the Satanic Verses of the Mathematics.
It's a imediate classic!!.......2003-01-04
For those wanting to learn not only functional analisys but also the basic elements about math (set thoery, algebra, topology,...), I doubt that they can find anything better than this book. It's the state of art!!!

Useful and exciting text even for physicist.......2000-01-26
In the last two or three decades, we mathematical physicists, who study on Schroedinger operator and scattering theory, have been required to learn much about the frontier line of pure mathematics, especially about the functional analytic method of linear PDE. For the study on the classical treatment of PDE, many excellent books have already been published, e.g. Courant & Hilbert, Petrovsky. But for the modern and advanced tool of PDE, we can't find so many exciting texts, except this Egorov's one ! This compact text (about 200 pages) is much highly suggestive than I expected. Although this text contains only the "Elements", many great ideas should be found even by theoretical physicists. Part two of this text, which deals with equations with constant coefficients, is especially inspiring for me, and probably for you. I can't afford to wait to read the following series of this text.
