Book Description

Two six-year-olds, Nicholas Czerwinski and Hollyanna Berry, live across town from each other, yet worlds apart. Nicholas is from a “normal family,” while Hollyanna and her mother struggle to make ends meet. One Christmas Nicholas and Hollyanna meet in a Christmas novelties shop. Their lives are forever changed. Hollyanna falls in love with a necklace, promising her mother never to ask Santa Claus for anything more, if just once he would bring her a present, something heÂ'd never done. Nicholas, touched by the Christmas spirit, writes Santa a letter, asking him to keep some of his presents so the girl can get the necklace instead. Twenty years later, Hollyanna Berry, now a nurse, is still wearing the necklace, wishing she could thank the stranger who sent it. After being treated for injuries suffered on the job, firefighter Nicholas Czerwinski finds the necklace on his person. His only desire now is to find its ownerÂ…but how?

Book Description

From the construction of primitive war galleys in the first millenium BC to today's most technically advanced warship, historians have paid almost exclusive attention to the famous ships and their naval battles. This book fills a void in maritime history by providing comprehensive information on the shipyards--past and present--that built those ships. Concentrating on the last three hundred years, the author includes a concise history of the world's major naval shipyards, a map showing their locations, and for certain key shipyards, a diagram showing the general layout of the facilities. In addition, he covers warship evolution from wood and canvas to steam, steel, and electronics, as well as the concurrent changes in building methodology. Tapping a wide variety of international sources, this survey adds a fresh and fascinating perspective to the epic quest for seapower. Generously illustrated with photographs, maps and plans, it will be a welcome addition to any naval history bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars A unique contribution to naval historical literature.......2001-07-18

The book by Robert Winklareth has undoubtedly a unique place among books concerning naval history. There are some books dedicated to history of individual shipbuilders, but this is probably the first book describing history of naval shipbuilders throughout the world.

The book consists of 12 chapters, glossary, bibliography, and index (384 pages of text plus 16 pages of illustrations). After introductory chapter about evolution of naval shipbuilding follows a description of all naval shipbuilders, country by country. Each chapter is dedicated to any of major naval powers (UK, USA, France, Japan, Germany, Italy, Russia, The Netherlands) or groups of states (Scandinavia, Other European Nations, The Rest of World). There is a clear attempt to describe history of all naval shipbuilders and even naval facilities involved in maintenance of warships. Description of each shipbuilder usually includes its location, history, and names of major warships built there (however, there is not a separately list of those warships - their names are mentioned throughout the text). Description of major shipbuilders is usually accompanied by a simple scheme/map showing location of docks, slipways, basins, and other facilities. There are also simple maps showing location of dockyards, shipyards, and naval bases.

Not surprisingly, the most detailed description relates to shipbuilders from the UK and the USA. Comprehensive description is dedicated also to shipbuilders from France, Japan, Germany, Italy and The Netherlands (description of Russian shipbuilders will be examined separately). Shipbuilders of other countries are described sufficiently, although usually not in more detail. Moreover, the latest developments are omitted for some countries (for example, construction of the Halifax-class frigates in Canada during the 90s is not mentioned). However, as more problematic feature of the book seems to be omission of some countries as for example Finland, South Africa or both Koreas.

Another problematic feature of the book is unbalanced description of Russian shipbuilders. There is a sufficient description of shipbuilders located in Baltic area, especially in St.Petersburg. On the other hand, description of other major Russian shipbuilders is only brief and sometimes inaccurate. For example building of submarines in Krasnoe Sormovo Shipyard in Nizhni Novgorod (during Soviet era named Gorki) is described as only construction of "pre-fabrication of submarine sections that are transported to other shipyards for final assembly" (p. 307). Krasnoe Sormovo Shipyard has built, in fact, 21 nuclear subs (!) and dozens of conventional subs. Minor Russian naval shipbuilders are not mentioned at all. Not very detailed description of Russian naval shipbuilders is understandable because of absence of reliable sources in English language. There are, however, many books and articles in Russian language concerning history of naval shipbuilding in Russia/USSR published in recent years. The most comprehensive source seems to be the book "Istoria otechestvennogo sudostroenia" (History of Home Shipbuilding) in five volumes published during 1991-1996. Unfortunately, this excellent book is useful only for those naval enthusiasts who are able to read in Russian.

Conclusion: The book "Naval Shipbuilders of the World" represents undoubtedly a significant contribution to naval historical literature. It should not miss in library of each naval enthusiast. Weaknesses mentioned above do not reduce overall value of this book. Nevertheless, any complementary book fulfilling omissions and amending inaccuracies would be desirable.

Book Description

Nine hundred years after the Crusader capture of Jerusalem, Carole Hillenbrand shows us the other side of conquest. This comprehensive work of cultural history gives us something we have never had: a view of the Crusades as seen through Muslim eyes. With breathtaking command of medieval Muslim sources as well as the vast literature on medieval European and Muslim culture, Carole Hillenbrand has produced a book that shows not only how the Crusades were perceived by the Muslims, but how the Crusades affected the Muslim world - militarily, culturally, and psychologically. As the author persuasively demonstrates, that influence continues now, centuries after the events.

In The Crusades the reader discovers how the Muslims reacted to the Franks, and how Muslim populations were displaced, the ensuing period of jihad, the careers of Nur al-Din and Saladin, and the interpenetration of Muslim and Christian cultures. Stereotypes of the Franks in Muslim documents offer a fascinating counter to Western views of the infidel of legend.

For readers interested in the Middle Ages, military history, the history of religion, and postcolonial studies, The Crusades opens a window onto a conflict we have only viewed from one side.

The Crusades is richly illustrated, with eighteen color plates and over five hundred line drawings and black and white photographs.

5 out of 5 stars The Crusades: Islamic Perspectives.......2001-06-19

This is the best-produced academic paperback I have ever seen. The book is wonderfully illustrated. The photographs are supplemented by hundreds of intriguing drawings in the wide margins. The text is spaciously presented and easy to read. I found zero typographical errors in more than six hundred pages of text, a delight in these days of hasty editing. Hillenbrand's writing is clear, straightforward, and balanced. The book presents a much-needed new perspective on the Crusades. Five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Hillenbrand's The Crsuades: Islamic Perspectives.......2000-09-20

This book is an excellent review of the most up-to-date knowledge we have about contemporary Islamic persepctives on the "Wars of the Cross." The author carefully sets our her purpose in writing this work, which includes both Muslim sources for the major figures and events, as well as Muslim perceptions of the Crusaders and how the Crusades have influenced Middle Eastern history. Anyone wishing to learn fully about this time period must read this work.

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Resource.......2000-06-17

I have only skimmed the surface of this book, yet am very impressed. The bibliography alone is a treasure for anyone studying the Crusades. It's arranged so that the translated chronicles are used to illustrate points in the narrative. The index is detailed and useful, while the narrative itself is easy to read and divided into subsections within the chapters (for example: Old Frankish Women, Marriage, Medicine etc.) A welcome addition to Crusades scholarship, especially for students/readers who cannot read the originals.

        Book Description

Since the AIDS epidemic was recognized, information on safer sex has been assumed to be the most crucial means of preventing further spread of the disease. But how well has AIDS education worked? What kinds of education work best and for whom? This study is the first to provide an in-depth analysis of the results of AIDS education programs and to explore the psychosocial factors that affect behavioral responses to education. B. R. Simon Rosser provides a detailed profile of a specific population at risk, including factors such as sexual behavior, psychology, religious affiliation, legal status, and discrimination. Using comparative measures of behavior, personality, social status, attitudes, and risk-taking, he identifies important differences between homosexual men who engage in safer sex and those who do not. Finally, he evaluates the impact of different approaches to AIDS education. Examining both positive and negative effects, Rosser shows that the spread of the HIV virus was actually accelerated by a national education campaign utilizing fear, and contrasts this result with four international gay-sensitive education campaigns that produced positive changes in behavior and lifestyle. He discusses ways in which AIDS education must develop in order to become more effective, together with crucial changes that are needed in both the gay population and the larger community if HIV transmission is to be halted. This study is a valuable resource for education and research in AIDS prevention, sexual behavior, psychovenereology, education, health, and related disciplines.

The authors of this essential new guide maintain that lesbian and gay adolescents "rarely receive health education and counseling in a way that is relevant to them." Health and emotional risks to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered youth are heightened by prejudice and the chance of antigay violence, as well as by the need for secrecy. In fact, the problems of disclosure may be the greatest impediment to appropriate health care for gay minors, who (often rightly) fear that their parents will be informed of their sexuality or their medical conditions. Health care providers have been working without clinical care guidelines for gay youth, let alone a single resource that brings together protocols for assessment, treatment, and psychosocial care. Named the 1998 Book of the Year in Psychiatric Nursing by the American Journal of Nursing, this guide has also been purchased for distribution by the Health Resources and Services Administration and should become the central work in the field. --Regina Marler

        Book Description

This is the first hands-on guide for providing health and mental health care to lesbian and gay youth and young adults. Although it focuses on adolescents, the information is relevant for any age group. In addition to specific guidelines for care and for approaching such sensitive topics as sexual behavior, substance abuse, and suicide, the book includes a comprehensive review of the literature and the most up-to-date information for providers, researchers, educators, and general readers alike. This book also includes the first guidelines (clinical care protocols) on primary care, mental health care, HIV medical and psychosocial care for lesbian and gay youth, and HIV counseling and testing for adolescents. There is extensive discussion of the social and health effects of stigmatized identity in the context of adolescent development.

This incredible book takes the reader on an easy to follow journey that starts with the basics necessary to the understanding of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered youth. A well organized summary of existing knowledge is combined with progressive new knowledge to offer up concrete information about assessing, intervening, and supporting this gravely underserved population of youth and their families.

In addition to the basics described above, the book introduces cutting-edge information about adolescent HIV counseling and testing. This state-of-the art publication is without a doubt a classic to be read by all professionals working with youth.

            Description:
Use of health care services has been suggested to be lower among homo- or bisexual persons than among heterosexual persons, due to a lack of trust in the health care system. However, population-based studies on differences in health care utilization according to sexual orientation are scarce. The purpose of the current study was to explore differences in health care utilization and confidence in health care between heterosexual, bisexual and homosexual persons. A survey of a random sample of patients of Dutch general practices (n=9684) gathered data on socio-demographic variables, sexual orientation, health status, confidence in health care and health care utilization. Differences in health care utilization between homo- or bisexual persons and heterosexual persons were analyzed with logistic regression analysis, in which we statistically adjusted for socio-demographics and health status. Reported health was lower among homosexual men and women as compared to heterosexual persons. There were no sexual orientation-related differences in confidence in health care. Controlling for health status, it appeared that gay men more frequently used mental and somatic health care than heterosexual men, and that lesbian or bisexual women more frequently used mental health care than heterosexual women. We found a higher rate of health care use among homosexual and bisexual persons as compared to heterosexual persons, that could only be partly explained by differences in health status. To gain a better understanding of our findings, data on the predisposition to use health services among homosexual and bisexual men and women is needed.

Dr. van den Aardweg has dedicated much time and effort researching the background and possible treatments of homosexuality. If you are opened to being challenged in your current views on the subject, regardless of your perspective, this is the book to read. If you are homosexual, it will "get under your skin" like no other book. It has been reprinted three times in German, and needs to be reprinted in English, but perhaps a local library has a copy
