Terrific!.......2005-04-13
This is an excellent book for parents and educators. I gained so much insight about my own parenting methods. I have incorporated this text into the methodology courses I teach to educators. Insightful, powerful, easy to read, another great way for us all to drop the at-risk label, condescension, and the secondary gains of victimhood.

Popular and Not Popular -- War in the Air WWI.......2003-08-28
The Diary of Lt John M Grider, KIA in France, 1918, as amended and edited by his friend E.W. Springs. Springs believed it would add to the value of the book if he kept it anonymous and mysterious. The book was serialized in a popular magazine in 1926 and created a scandal because it depicts the American boys as womanizers, drinkers, etc. (the racist attitudes of the flyers caused no comment at the time). Later Griders sisters forced Springs to admit that the book was based on their brothers diary, although apparently Springs also included considerable material from his own letters home. Springs was a Princeton graduate from a wealthy family. He was a top pilot and received the DFC, shooting down 5 enemy planes. He wrote some other books but none as popular as this one. This book is gritty and tough, and depicts very well the descent from idealistic recruit to hardened and battle weary veteran.
War Birds review.......2002-01-08
War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator is a fascinating portrait of training and combat for a WWI aviator. It is unclear to me whether the book consists of an actual diary, or is a dramatization written by a friend based on letters written by the aviator main character (see http://www.theaerodrome.com/aces/usa/springs.html). The aviator was a real person with real faults (he makes some racist statements), and this makes the story all the more personal. The story reminded me of Catch-22, but is more touching because the triumphs and deaths actually occurred.
The truth about the Air War of WWI.......2000-09-30
Although little is written of the truth to the Air War in WWI, it is often offered to history as a time of chivalry amoungst the "Upper Class Gentleman" of WWI. Most sucessful pilots, that being anymore that 5 kills, were showered with metals and given the highest honors from their fatherlands. Deeming them, The Knights of The Skies. The truth is far from reality. This book of one young man's personal, daily recolection in it's original, unaltered text, depicts the Air War as it really was. Not only can you feel the excitement and astonishment in his mind as he earns his wings in flight school, you also experience the sadness and despair as he watches his squadmates perish and learns the veracity of war and death. Illustrated by Clayton Knight, whose sketches and paintings went on to become famous after the war, this book is a must for anyone who is interested in the true reality of The Air War of WWI.
why don't they identify the author?.......2000-09-29
It was obvious from the wealth of information of those who served with the author that the identity is known. Why not disclose who wrote the diary? We share the experiences. We watch the aviator transform from a fun loving barn stormer to a machine that can only function when airborne. The end comes and you know it is coming, the author is crumbling, his attitude has changed, he operates by reflex and his judgement is impaired. (not by booze but battle fatigue has taken over} This is too real . . .
Great Book.......1998-05-19
Factual every day history of the air war of WWI. This should be required reading for all History Buffs.

Book Description
Katherine Scarfe Beckett is concerned with representations of the Islamic world in Anglo-Saxon England. Using a variety of literary, historical and archaeological evidence, Beckett argues that the first perceptions of Arabs, Ismaelites and Saracens were derived from Christian exegesis. These perceptions preconditioned Western expressions of hostility and superiority towards peoples of the Islamic world, and these received ideas prevailed over actual experience.

In this book, Scarfe Beckett is concerned with representations of the Islamic world prevalent in Anglo-Saxon England. Using a wide variety of literary, historical and archaeological evidence, she argues that the first perceptions of Arabs, Ismaelites and Saracens which derived from Christian exegesis preconditioned western expressions of hostility and superiority towards peoples of the Islamic world, and that these received ideas prevailed even as material contacts increased between England and Muslim territory. Medieval texts invariably represented Muslim Arabs as Saracens and Ismaelites (or Hagarenes), described by Jerome as biblical enemies of the Christian world three centuries before Muhammad's lifetime. Two early ideas in particular - that Saracens worshipped Venus and dissembled their own identity - continued into the early modern period. This finding has interesting implications for earlier theses by Edward Said and Norman Daniel concerning the history of English perceptions of Islam.
Customer Reviews:
Highly interesting..........2006-01-18
Beckett studies the nearly five centuries from the rise of an Islamic policy (A.D. 622) to the first Crusade (A.D. 1096), looking in detail at the wisps and traces of English knowledge of, contact with, and attitudes toward Muslims. The results are highly interesting.
Who knew that Bishop Georgius of Ostia, a papal legate to England, reported in 786 to the pope on two synods he had attended and included this decree: "That no ecclesiastic shall dare to consume foodstuffs in secret, unless on account of very great illness, since it is hypocrisy and a Saracen practice"? Or that Offa, the king of Mercia (a region of the Midlands, north of London) during the years 757-96 had a gold piece struck in his name, now available for view at the British Museum, which bore, as Beckett puts it, "a somewhat bungled Arabic inscription on obverse and reverse in imitation of an Islamic dinar"?
In fleshing out Dark Ages' reactions to the new faith, Beckett very usefully establishes the primitive base from which the English-speaking peoples even today ultimately draw their views. She tells about the unique English traveler's account to the Middle East dating from this era (that of Arculf); tallies the dinars found in such places as Eastborne, St. Leonards-on-Sea, London, Oxford, Croydon, and Bridgnorth; and totes up the Middle Eastern imports, such as pepper, incense, and bronze bowls. She finds that a "continuing network of trade and diplomatic links" connected western Christendom to the Muslim countries.
As for attitudes, they were not just uninformed but static. Beckett notes that initial responses to Islam were shaped by pre-Islamic writings, especially those of St. Jerome (c. A.D. 340-420), on Arabs, Saracens, Ismaelites, and other easterners. This prolonged influence resulted from a pronounced lack of curiosity on the part of Anglo-Saxons and most other Europeans.
To end on a jarringly contemporary note: dismayingly, the influence of Edward Said has reached the point that his theories about Western views of Muslims now reach even to the early medieval period; Beckett devotes page after page to dealing with his theories. Happily, she has the confidence and integrity (in her words) "to some extent" to dispute those theories.

Superb book.......2007-02-05
Though there are sections about cataract surgery, this excellent book will probably appeal to a pretty limited group of Eye M.D.s due to the subspecialization. It is aimed at people performing anterior segment surgery, but who do corneal and refractive surgery as well. Useful tips include gluing corneal ulcers and perfs, PTK, and PRK and LASIK. There are also tips for full-thickness grafts. Very useful and highly recommended. I hope the authors come out with a new edition in the future.

Book Description
Good vision is more than 20/20 on a Snellen visual acuity chart. The modern ophthalmologist understands that contrast sensitivity, near and distance vision, performance under light and dark conditions, and the brain’s interpretation of input from the sensory apparatus, are all important elements in patients’ quality of vision.
In
Quality of Vision: Essential Optics for the Ophthalmic Surgeon, ophthalmologist and optics expert Dr. Jack T. Holladay explores the elements of vision that lie beyond Snellen testing. He explains the “whys” behind the machinery, instruments, technology, and procedures commonly used to assess vision before and after cataract and refractive surgery. With a better understanding of these tools, ophthalmologists can deliver better vision for their cataract and refractive surgery patients.
Quality of Vision addresses:
• Measuring and treating astigmatism in corneal and IOL surgery
• The importance of correcting spherical aberration in cataract and refractive surgery
• IOL calculations after refractive surgery
• Promising approaches to the correction of presbyopia
• Other practical topics the clinician can use every day
Recognized as the leader in ophthalmic optics, Dr. Holladay incorporates practical aspects of daily practice into each chapter as he expertly explains the scientific principles, mathematical formulas, and theories behind these important issues. Additionally,
Quality of Vision includes numerous color illustrations to provide visual representations of the text’s key points.
Dr. Holladay discusses what’s on everyone’s mind:
• How to take the best measurements and perform the best calculations to ensure good outcomes in cataract and refractive surgery
• How neural adaptation can improve outcomes
• How today’s excimer laser systems deliver excellent optical correction, and why tomorrow’s systems will perform even better
Quality of Vision: Essential Optics for the Ophthalmic Surgeon is the most complete and practical reference for ophthalmologists looking to increase their understanding of optical physics and their ability to deliver good vision to their patients after cataract and refractive surgery.

Refractive Lens Surgery
ASIN: 3540200460 |
Book Description
The topic of the second volume of the series in "Essentials in Ophthalmology" is cataract and refractive surgery, a realm of ophthalmic care that has undergone revolutionary changes in the past 10 years. Worldwide, the removal of the opaque crystalline lens is the most frequently performed surgical intervention in the human body, and refractive surgery encompasses an increasing array of procedures with rapidly growing surgical volumes. The goal of the editors of this book has been to provide up-to-date clinically relevant overviews and to highlight the most interesting fields of research and controversy.
The first half of the book focuses on new cataract surgical techniques and devices, including topical anaesthesia, small incision cataract surgery, modern intraocular lenses and ophthalmic viscosurgical devices. Special attention is devoted to difficult situations, such as mature, uveitic and pediatric cataracts, and to the prevention and management of complications.
The second half of the book describes current and evolving modalities - both corneal and lenticular - to correct human refractive errors. Particular emphasis is placed on topics related to quality of vision, such as wavefront technology, measuring quality of vision, and issues in pupil measurement. Many of these topics pertain also to cataract surgery, indicating the merging of technologies that is occurring in these two major ophthalmic subspecialties.

Book Description
The Blue Line Incision and Refractive Phacoemulsification is based on the newest developments in cataract surgery, highlighting the blue line incision technique, which combines the safety of the scleral tunnel incision with the efficiency of a clear corneal incision. It is a natural transition for both clear corneal and scleral tunnel incision surgeons. The book also includes Kurt Buzard's unique "swipe and swallow" technique, which allows quick and easy removal of the lens with a significantly lower possibility of error.
The book focuses on the increasing trend and ability of surgeons to obtain refractive results with lens-related surgeries. It also includes a special technique of performing astigmatism corrections at the slit-lamp and a procedure for intraocular lens exchange through the same incision without sutures. This resource is essential for all surgeons performing cataract surgery.
