Helpful for a parent.......2006-03-06
Although this book was written for the healthcare provider, or student, I have found it to be helpful as a parent of a four year old that has been stuttering for over 6 months.
I have even posted the interventions in this book as a list on the fridge for our family to refer to. On this list are things such as "No simultalk" and "pause for 2 seconds prior to responding."
I am very glad with this book. As a matter of fact, a trip to the speech pathologist who charged me more, was not even as close to being as helpful as this book. Thank you Doctors Onslow and Packman!
Greatful,
Oksana

Customer Reviews:
The psychology of leadership.......2007-07-12
This biography of Sherman is a study of the man Liddell Hart believes to be the great strategic thinker of the American Civil War. It is more a study of his psychology, much of it derived from original sources such as telegraphic messages, than an account of battles. Sherman was a complex man with a background in banking and commerce that served him well in planning his campaigns in the Confederacy. At the outbreak of hostilities, he was headmaster of a military academy in Louisiana and the local people tried to induce him to stay in spite of his open Union sympathies. He was offered a positon as Assistant Secretary of War but declined to seek a military command. His contempt for politicians was later expressed in his famous refusal to accept a nomination for the Presidency. He was the most intellectual general of the war and Liddell Hart is very interested in his thinking. This is a valuable book for those interested in leadership.
Classic Study of Sherman by Military Expert Hart .......2005-01-30
This is a classic written by Liddell Hart in highly readable compact detail. Hart, an English veteran of WWI, was a 20th century military expert who had a great appreciation for Sherman's strategic ability and understanding of an enemy morale. In contrast to what Hart calls a game of "shuttle cock" in the east, Sherman's strategic maneuvers and splitting of command out frequently force Johnson to give up ground while shedding very little blood. Hart notes that he does not spend too much analytical detail on where every "man stood" in reference to regimental history but Hart provides the reader the necessary detail to appreciate the battles and over all campaign. Hart's appreciation of Sherman's ability to take the war to the Deep South, live off the land and take a great risk of literally disappearing from his line of communications is well detailed here as Sherman's penetration through three states eventually undermines Lee's great efforts in Virginia. Hart, the veteran of the stalemate battle of trenches that featured great loss appreciates Sherman's successful plan of warfare. Of course, there are many historians who believe that General Joe Johnston's propensity to retreat may have made him a weak opponent but Johnston did keep a strong army in the field until Hood decimated the Army of Tennessee. This is a great book written by a man who not only lived through "The Great War" but was highly capable of writing about a war that was very similar in the eastern theater by late 1864.
An Excellent Work.......2003-07-21
When I first began to read this book I was concerned that it might be outdated. However, I found much of the subject matter to be quite timely. Of particular interest was the impact that Sherman's successful (albeit violent) trek through Georgia had on the 1864 elections. I never realized how close the Copperhead (Peace) Democrats came to winning that election and perhaps bringing the Civil War to a far differnet conclusion . Hart bring Sherman to life. He also vividly illustrates the behind the scene politics that almost prevented Sherman (not to mention Grant) from their historic roles in the Civil War. Don't be put off by the subject matter or the age of the book. It's worth the read.
The Greatest Strategist of the Civil War.......2002-09-19
Sherman was both the most original genius of the Civil War, and "the typical American". His career provides lessons to the modern world and to modern warfare. It was his conscious exploitation of the economic and psychological factors of war in his "March through Georgia" which helped to end the Civil War. The long and expensive battles in Northern Virginia were replayed on the battlefields of France in the Great War.
The Union attempted to take Richmond by the shortest and most direct route; but this way was blocked with natural obstacles. If the Confederates fell back they would be closer to their reserves, supplies, and reinforcements. These facts favored the entrenched defenders.
The western campaign ended in the capture of Vicksburg and control of the Mississippi from St. Louis to New Orleans. Liddell Hart contrasts the maneuvers here to the stalemate back east. But the conditions, or politics, did not allow a wide flanking invasion through West Virginia or North Carolina. The threat to Richmond kept Confederate troops there. Longstreet proposed an invasion of Kentucky, a far flanking attack, but was turned down by Lee.
It explains how Sherman out-maneuvered Johnston from Chattanooga to Atlanta. By threatening to outflank Johnston, the Confederates fell back. His replacement by Hood did not prevent the capture of Atlanta. This revived the hope of victory for the North, and helped to re-elect Lincoln.
Sherman then abandoned his supply and communication lines (vulnerable to attack) and marched on to Savannah and the ocean. His army lived off the land. This enabled his army to be resupplied by the Navy. He then marched north, seeming to attack other cities, but passed between and continued to destroy railroads and bridges.
The end came soon after this, as other armies invaded the South. Sherman designed an armistice and amnesty where the Confederates would be disbanded, and their arms turned over to the states. The latter would allow repression of bandits and guerillas. He was criticized for this.
Sherman was a man of modest habits. When admirers raised [money]to buy him a house, he refused to accept unless he received bonds that would pay the taxes! He lived within his means. The resisting power of a state depends more on the strength of popular will than on the strength of its armies, and this depends on economic and social security (p.429).
Liddell Hart gave preference to contemporaneous correspondence rather than Official Reports (which are written for history to justify a policy). Some of the ideas in this 72-year old book may not coincide with more recent history.
not up to Liddel Hart's usual level.......2001-05-02
I will start by saying Liddel Hart is my favorite military historian/author and I own half a dozen books by him, and regard them as gospel. However I felt that Liddel Hart was not as well versed in this area as he is in European History. He lets his ingrained contrariness run away with him. He wants to create a "great captain" where there is none. He also, I believe, wants to convince the reader of the genius of the "inderect approach" which he expounds in his excellent book "Strategy". However I think considering Sherman's campaign as indirect is like calling D-Day indirect because the allies invaded Normandy as opposed to Calais. ( I must admit that I am biased because I am a Lee fan) Like every other book by Liddel hart though, it is a very quick and pleasant read. I would recommend his book on Scipio as a great intro to his work.

Book Description
Hodding Carter writes, "The unsung hero of human history was, of course, the Brain of Drains, the Hub of Tubs, the Power of Showers, the Brewer of Sewers...the humble plumber.... The Irish may have saved civilization, once, but plumbers have done so countless times."
When we consider the amenities that really make a difference in our well-being, surely good plumbing must rank near the top. But rarely have we taken the time to appreciate the engineering marvels that bring clean water into our homes with the turn of a tap and wash our waste products away with the flip of a lever. Until now.
Witty, anecdotal, and thoroughly entertaining, Flushed not only chronicles the long and notable history of plumbing, but follows Hodding Carter's travels and travails as he casts his own Roman lead water pipes inspired by the writings of Pliny the Elder, descends into the sewers of London, installs a state-of-the-art Japanese toilet in his bathroom, and fearlessly tries to understand everything about this most underappreciated pillar of civilization.
A winning combination of history, science, and firsthand experience, Flushed will entertain and educate all those who have never contemplated the hidden intricacies of this miracle of everyday technology.
Customer Reviews:
Fun ode to sanitation engineers.......2007-07-06
Hodding Carter found a way to take a subject few would touch, and turned it in an engaging ode to sanitation engineers from Roman times until the present. Clearly, Carter has a lot of fun with the subject matter, as a chapter called "The Power of Poo" would suggest. But he best thing about this book is that despite all the bathroom humor, Carter is dead serious, that the world owes a great debt to those who build and maintain the world's sewage systems. The underlying message to the book is that if we would all be a little less squeamish about the subject of human waste, and give the matter of its disposal the respect it deserves, the world would be a better place.
I often read books at a nearby coffee shop or while eating dinner by myself. With this book, do that at your own risk.
Readable and fun........2006-12-14
W. Hodding Carter, Flushed: How the Plumber Saved Civilization (Atria, 2006)
Hodding Carter emailed me a few months before this book came out and asked if I'd review it. I was playing the odds in thinking that this would be an extremely small press release, perhaps even a vanity, and that I'd have a very difficult time tracking a copy of the book down. But the premise of the thing intrigued me, and I was quite happy to find out I was wrong, and that Atria were releasing it. So I put a copy on hold at the library, and found myself seventeenth in line for it; either Carter had emailed a whole lot of people, or I somehow missed rather a good bit of buzz on this work that, as its subtitle attests, is all about plumbing. Now, you wouldn't think that plumbing would be a very popular subject for a book. My experience is that you would be wrong. Seventeenth in line in my library system is a place I usually find myself in for the latest Lemony Snicket novel, not a book about plumbing. So I waited. And I waited. And it finally came in for me. And the big question has to be whether the book was worth the wait? And the answer is that it most certainly was; it's one of a growing number of compulsively readable nonfiction books that's crossed my path in the last year, and this is a trend that I am quite happy to see.
While Carter spends a good deal of time discussing plumbing, and does it in a surprisingly readable fashion, what really sets the book apart is Carter's own attempts, often at great personal cost, to attempt to do some of the things that plumbers have done over the years. While it's not polite to laugh at someone else's misfortune, this is good old-fashioned slapstick on more than one occasion. And, like the man said, it's not a party till someone loses an eye, right?
Quite enjoyable, and recommended. ***
Plumbing history.......2006-11-03
This was an inciteful review and a fast read covering both modern and ancient attempts to provide the fundumentals of water and waste to various civilizations.
Some remarkable and important points.......2006-10-17
Carter's book is a wonderful read. It's light hearted, slightly "off the wall" and very informative. Some of the information regarding ancient public and private sanitation systems was already known to me, but I was particularly impressed with the author's unwillingness to just take the historian's word on the subject as a given. His attempt to create a Roman style pipe was not only very funny, it was very informative. His search for a pipe in situ was impressive--not to mention enviable; I would love to hop a plane to a foreign land just to satisfy my own curiosity about some topic.
The book is very well written and pulls the reader along with its wit and humor. Although the subject is one few individuals actually take time to consider, it is one of the more important issues facing mankind even today. As the author notes, several million people in third world countries do not enjoy the benefits of clean water and sewage removal. When I took a class on the history of medicine some time ago one of the things pointed out was that despite the acknowledged technological changes in medicine, the two most significant events with respect to human health and longevity were the introduction of antibiotics and public sanitation. In fact, of the two, the latter is probably the more significant.
It was interesting to notice how fitful have been the advances in sanitation, especially since its significance was already recognized in prehistory. If the ancient people of the Indian subcontinent realized the benefit of the technology even before the advent of the written word, its slow progress seems odd. As the author points out, even the "modern" toilet is a 19th century product, which has changed only in minor details. Carter's interview with and discussion of the toilet technology introduced recently in India is especially interesting, because it suggests that the solution to the problem of waste removal might also conceivably provide a solution to energy issues.
THOSE WRITING PAPERS on history, history of medicine, history of science, anthropology, sociology, poly sci. For what reasons might public sanitation have failed to progress more evenly through time? What types of resources might a society need to possess to carry out sewage removal and water purification? What did this author prove by carrying out his experiment in making and assembling a Roman type pipe? What types of knowledge might earlier people have lacked that made public sanitation seem unnecessary? Archaeological studies of earlier pre-agricultural societies suggest that, despite what was previously believed about them, early hunter-gatherers were actually healthier than agriculturalists. Why do you think this was the case? What would this author have to say about it? Why might a government not want to extend sanitation? What effect might lack of sanitation in 3rd world countries have on the developed world? What issues in 3rd world countries perhaps impede the progress of this type of technology?
As funny as the book is, the author makes some remarkable and important points about the future of our planet and our species.
Semi-Serious Summary of a Smelly Subject!.......2006-08-30
"Flushed" provides readers with a world-wide tour of both the earliest and latest in subjects we take for granted and usually would rather not talk about - water and sewage systems. Carter believes today's sewers date from the 3rd millennium B.C. in Mohenjodaro, a city in what is now Pakistan. All the homes had a hole built into the floor dropped into the same brick drain that took out bath water to a cesspit designed to empty into covered sewer mains as it filled up. These mains were tall enough to walk through and emptied outside the city walls into the river. Then the Hellenistic Greeks (350-150 B.C.) shortened many of the old aqueducts, using inverted siphons, and began using lead for some pipes.
The next development took place in Rome's Carthage - 1,600 side-by-side marble latrine seats, with sponges at each seat that could be washed in water flowing by one's feet and then used to wipe oneself! (The "good news" from Rome is that studying its ruins teaches one to make and seal lead pipe.)
England was disappointing - Carter claims that romantic images we have of castles surrounded by moats were a bit off - reality is that the bathrooms emptied out over the moats, creating an early form of germ warfare.
Silliness aside, Carter is correct when he claims that plumbers saved civilization. Imagine London, with its million+ population using the "out the window" system during 1858's hot and humid "Great Stink." Fortunately, Parliament, in between holding its breath, took action, the city went back to the Mohenjodaro system, and years later we even learned how to treat sewage instead of simply dumping it into rivers and oceans.

Book Description
The first edition of
Embryos, Genes and Birth Defects, edited by the late Peter Thorogood, was a radical new book aimed at bridging the gap between the medical disciplines of embryology and dysmorphology, and recent advances in cellular, molecular and developmental biology. This new edition remains unique in its breadth and brings up to date our understanding of birth defects and of the strategies utilized to gain such knowledge. It features new chapters on human cytogenetics, mutagenesis and the eyes and ears.
The book presents key topics in developmental biology and explains how they provide the foundations for understanding clinical birth defects. The first six chapters introduce concepts and strategies adopted to elucidate developmental anomalies leading to birth defects. The book then focuses on specific organs and reviews the cellular and molecular mechanisms affecting their development and how disruption of these mechanisms by genetic or environmental factors may underlie certain birth defects. The chapters are concise and provide up-to-date coverage of topics in a format that is easily accessible and yet at the forefront of research.
Written primarily for paediatricians, obstetricians, clinical geneticists and allied workers, this book guides the reader through the contribution of modern molecular biology to our understanding of human development. Developmental and cellular biologists will learn how errors in the cellular and genetic mechanism can lead to classical disorders, diseases and syndromes.

Customer Reviews:
Highly Recommended for Medical Doctors.......2001-04-11
I have been looking for a source like this book for a long time. The content of most medical embryology books are limited to merely descriptive embryology. This book is a great source to review the current advances concerning genetics and molecular mechanisms underlying the development of not only the commonly covered topics like the nervous system but also less common ones like the skin and the teeth. Most of you who have tried to gather the recent literature on any subject can appreciate the burden of searching for review articles which are both comprehensive and easy to understand. This book provides you with a collection of abnormalities studied in model organisms like the fruit fly or the chicken as well as humans. Although it may be hard to follow the text for somebody who is unfamiliar with medical diseases and terminology, it is still an invaluable source for molecular aspects of some diseases. As I read, my enthusiasm grew and I was disappointed with the authors' decision to keep it concise. I am looking forward to reading the new, expanded edition.
