When this book arrived, I almost thought it was not a book I ordered! The one I got is a very old copy, printed in 1984... I would have bought a new copy if I had known. It would have been a small price difference. Better go to a bookseller to see the actual book before buying it.
A reference manual for Shiatsu practitionner.......2005-02-23
You want to learn the right techniques to practice shiatsu? Then, get this book. It is the best reference you could get. "The complete book of shiatsu therapy" is a practical guide that shows you the points to press during a routine treatment or for a particular ailment or disorder, it shows you the points location and their anatomical correspondance.
You may like or dislike the fact that this book does not reflect the eastern medical phylosophy (what meridian is he working on now?), as opposed to "Zen Shiatsu". It offers you an excellent basis to become a great shiatsu "technician".
Learning Shiatsu is like learning a martial art, you learn the techniques, master them and then search for more knowledge and keep improving...

Take it from someone who knows; this book is exactly what any would-be practitioner of Shiatsu and accupressure needs. If your just starting out, or if you've taken years of classes on the matter as I have, Mr. Namikoshi will show you step-by-step exactly what points to hit, in what order for maximum effectiveness, and using what positioning of the body as well as the hands and fingers you are applying with. No homeopathic practitioner should be without this book; I only wish I had more stars to work with. I must emphasize that I am not acting on Mr. Namikoshi's behalf, nor do hope to see anything except more people writing reviews such as this one other than myself, for that will mean that more people have gone out and found a copy themselves. One of my favorite books on shiatsu, I always recommend it for beginners. It contains the essential in 190 pages. Easy to read and to consult, well explained. Drawings are well done and give a better understanding than a lot of other books that have photos. Covers all the practical aspects (a.o. meridians, stretching, breathing, diagnosis), and offers a basic shiatsu session. Nice comments and helpful tips. Goes into important details, but not 'overloaded'. Excellent! No bla bla.

Here's a handsomely produced three-book set on shiatsu (Japanese massage), reflexology, and yoga, perfect for anyone without the time or the means to hit a spa or gym class. Gorgeous full-color photos and easy-to-understand instructions make it simple to follow proper technique. The yoga and meditation exercises are perfect for solo practice, but the reflexology and shiatsu are most easily practiced with a partner. The yoga book includes a five-week plan for making yoga a habit, and its index gives particular stretches and asanas (poses) to try for relief of problems like indigestion, colds, high blood pressure, and anxiety. The discussion of "fire energy" and chakras (energy meridians in the body) delineated in the shiatsu book may seem a bit odd to readers more accustomed to Western medicine, but after a massage session, all doubt will melt away.

In this book, Daniel Kliman argues that the years following September 11, 2001, have marked a turning point in Japan's defense strategy. Utilizing poll data from Japanese newspapers as well as extensive interview material, Kliman chronicles the erosion of normative and legal restraints on Tokyo's security policy. In particular, he notes that both Japanese elites and the general public increasingly view national security from a realpolitik perspective. Japan's more realpolitik orientation has coincided with a series of precedent-breaking defense initiatives. Tokyo deployed the Maritime Self-Defense Force to the Indian Ocean, decided to introduce missile defense, and contributed troops to Iraq's post-conflict reconstruction. Kliman explains these initiatives as the product of four mutually interactive factors. In the period after September 11, the impact of foreign threats on Tokyo's security calculus became ever more pronounced; internalized U.S. expectations exerted a profound influence over Japanese defense behavior; prime ministerial leadership played an instrumental role in deciding high profile security debates; and public opinion appeared to overtake generational change as a motivator of realpolitik defense policies. This book rebuts those who exaggerate the nature of Japan's strategic transition. By evaluating potential amendments to Article 9, Kliman demonstrates that Tokyo's defense posture will remain constrained even after constitutional revision.

Demico Boothe has explored the reasons so many black men are indeed in prison in, WHY ARE SO MANY BLACK MEN IN PRISON? He begins with his own story of a shaky upbringing and his subsequent dabbling in drug dealing. He was caught with a few grams of crack cocaine but because it was the dreaded crack, he was given 10 years in prison. When he left prison after serving his time, he was actually railroaded back into prison by a crooked justice system. He delves deeply into our justice system and the motives behind all the new prisons that are being built. He gives succinct and reasonable views of exactly what is happening now in the United States and how the past has played a role in the present. He uses persuasive statistics regarding the number of black men in prison as compared to the number of white men who are incarcerated.
Demico Boothe has done an excellent job of researching his subject and it is a plus, if unfortunate for him, that he has actually experienced first hand what he's talking about. I knew I was hearing the real story rather than just statistics from an intellectual who had no real idea of what the prison system is really like. I would have liked for Boothe to search a little deeper into the Haiti, Aristide and USA question, maybe even reading Randall Robinson's take on the situation, and then he might see it a bit differently. Otherwise, it is a good book and one every one in America should read. We indeed, have a crisis going on.

A Must Read.......2007-05-25
Mr. Demico's book is a must-read for anyone concerned about young African American men. Although I did not agree with every conclusion he reached, Demico's main premises are convincing. As a white woman who teaches mainly students of color, I am always impressed, and often in awe, of those young men who reach college with so much going against them. Demico's books lays bare not only the horrible inequalities of our society, but also the racist attitudes of our political system - - Democrats, Republicans, and most everyone in between.

I found this book very interesting. As a white devil myself, I had no idea that I was responsible for forcing blacks into committing crimes and then subsequently clogging up the whole "Prison Industrial Complex"(tm). I will try to stop causing this, as I am sure it is creating a LOT of trouble for everyone! Sorry!
It is probably also my fault that young black men dressed in XXXXL clothes overtly threaten me and my family members routinely. Can anyone tell me what I should do to make this not happen?
I imagine it's also my fault that black on white violent crime is WAY higher than white on black violent crime, even though blacks constitute about 12.5% of the population, and whites are about 70%. But since it is impossible for a black to commit a hate crime according to our criminal justice system (since blacks are not under any circumstances racist), statistically, there are more white on black hate crimes. Boothe notes a statistic regarding hate crimes, but he skips the one about interracial violence in general.
In sum, Boothe notes that just about everything blacks do is actually MY fault, because my skin is white. Boothe, I've got a word for you.

If I have a complaint about this book, it is this: While I fully understand this is a historical recounting of Black police in America, I dearly wish the author would have spent more time on atmospheric historical verbal snapshots and anecdotes.
I first read this book last summer while doing research for my novel. I stumbled across it at a library and assumed I would just skim through it and pick out a few highlights. I ended up reading it cover-to-cover, then lamenting that it was over. For a non-fiction, non-exploitive book, this book is surprisingly enrapturing.
I bought this book as a Christmas gift for my girlfriend's father (who, I might add, is a Black policeman) and his eyes lit up like a child's when he saw the title. Already halfway through it, he absolutely loves it. Anyone who enjoys reading books on police history or African-American history should read this book. The complaint mentioned in my first sentence is the only thing that kept it from being a "ten".
It is amazing how recent most of these events are. Amazing and sad that it took so long for justice to begin to be carried out in this country. Some of the reasoning behind a lot of this history is so ostensibly sensible I'm surprised I never thought of it before.
Mr Dulaney, if you're reading this, please please finish the next book in this series. I guarantee you I'll buy at least three copies: one for me, one for my girlfriend's father, and the third for a detective I know.

This is not strictly a book about engineering or design, but about how to represent in artificial intelligence programs (AI) the information associated with engineering designs. The representation is geared to producing or checking designs, using AI techniques.
The book has a usable bibliographic reference and should be of interest to the AI specialist working in the area. It does have some summary information about engineering design, but I found the title a bit misleading: if you are looking for an engineering design text, you should look elsewhere.
