Customer Reviews:
This book is great!.......2000-04-28
This book incorporates lots of games and activities for all ages, even including games that older and younger children can all play together. Many of the games do not have a "winner" or "loser," which eliminates much of the competition that can create havoc in a household. Most of the games and activities require very little (if any) monetary outlay, but keep the kids engaged. Many of the games are active ones as well, and can be done indoors or out. It is a great book to use on a rainy day, or if you are looking for games to play while travelling, waiting at the doctor's office, etc. It is written in a very organized and orderly fashion. I found it easy to find games for a particular age group, or a particular type of game. I only wish that I had as much imagination as the authors!
Book Description
What will the post-Taliban government of Afghanistan look like? How will the war in Afghanistan affect the already unstable politics of Central Asia? In War at the Top of the World, veteran foreign correspondent Eric Margolis presents a revelatory history of the complicated and volatile conflicts that have entangled Afghanistan, Pakistan, the United States, the Soviet Union, and many others.
By 1999, Pakistan had proven they have medium-range nuclear weapons, and now the threat that their government could be taken over by a radical Islamic fundamentalist faction is stronger than ever. In fact, Osama bin Laden has already claimed to have a nuclear weapon. How could this have happened? Margolis plays witness to the escalating conflicts of the past decade, tracing disputes over Afghanistan, as well as those ever neighboring Kashmir and Tibet, back to their Cold War roots, exploring clashes that continue to threaten to destabilize the region today.
Combining vivid first-hand accounts of a war correspondent with a historical and strategic overview of the region, Margolis guides the reader through the geopolitical complexities of the area and its key players. He offers a clear, concise analysis of a complicated and little-understood part of the world that is home to a quarter of the world's population. Fascinating and now more timely than ever, War at the Top of the World is an extraordinary read for anyone interested in the current global balance of power.
Customer Reviews:
Heavily Baised.......2007-04-22
I am surprised how easy it is to put down a nation of a billion people with a history ranging back to over 3 Millennia as thieving indifferent thugs. That's the impression I got out of this book about India and Indian people as such.
The book has been written in an extremely biased manner. As if Mr. Margolis is making references straight out of a book he picked up for himself from a Madrasah in Pakistan occupied Kashmir.
It seems Mr. Margolis is on a never ending romantic honeymoon with the Islamic fundamentalists and seems to romanticize this whole notion of a holy struggle.
Not sure what book he is working on but I am sure the next time I would be reading about Mohammad Atta and how Mr. Margolis had a big crush on him.
I left the book when I read his extremely racist remarks like "Godless Hindus" and the "infidels"
Read this book if you are an India hater it will certainly boost their ego for the night.
Fanaticism exposed.......2006-11-05
Showing the fine line between the struggle for 'freedom' and fanaticism this is a chilling expose of the fanatics in that part of the world and how they think. Read it to see what we are up against in Iraq and other parts of the Middle East where they have the same type of fanaticism as Margolis describes.
Utter Rubbish.......2006-08-21
What do you say about a book where the very first sentence is a lie? It starts off with an alleged "hindu prayer" which I've never heard nor has any Hindu I double-checked with and apparently it does not appear on any of the search engines. The first sentence sets the tone for the extremely biased book. The author conveniently forgets mentioning how Kashmiri pandits were forced out of Kashmir by Islamic fundamentalists and even the common man. If the author had written the book without biases and made some of the stuff he has...it just have led me to give it 2 stars. Don't waste your time on this one...unless you are a conspiracy theory buff.
Afghanistan, Kashmir, and Tibet in the coming war........2006-07-04
I am not sure of this book or the assumptions that the author makes. This is a fairly short read, but the author tries to make some grand assumptions here. He also takes some rumors and turns them into history. I was not happy about that.
First, this author assumes there will be a coming war between India, Pakistan, and China. Throw in some variables like Russia, Burma, Taiwan, Vietnam, and you could get a world war that could go nuclear. I think most people know that tensions between India and Pakistan are very volatile and could lead to a nuclear exchange. I am not sure China would enter the fray. The author's allegiance or sympathies are clearly with the Tibetans, and the Muslim Kashmiris and Afghanis. He rants about the brutal suppression of the Indians, Chinese, and Russians. Suppression there is in these zones, but the author may be rattling on to create sympathy.
There are some untruths in this book. One involves the supposed affair between Edwin Mountbatten and Nehru. This is an argument many Pakistanis have when they talk about the division of the British Raj. The author does not state any supporting evidence, just they had a affair and this may have resulted in additional territory being given to India. Then the comment that the backpackers lost in Kashmir were maybe killed by the Indian authorities. Most would argue these backpackers were killed by Muslim fundamentalists. These two statements are not grounded in fact.
This book has some good information about possible conflicts in the future. The reader has to be aware that the author is trying to expound some of his own viewpoints and pass it off at fact. These is some good info in this book, but the reader has to beware.
A good book with limitations.......2006-06-13
The first thing to know about this book is that it is not a neutral book about topics that arouse significant controversy.
If you consider the book to consist of neutral facts, you are mistaken. But if you read it as the opinions of millions of people, you will learn how they think, and what they may not always mention in casual conversation. You can be sure that North American devotees of political correctness will not touch Margolis's opinions.
There never was much love lost between the Indians and Pakistanis; Margolis' description of a Pakistani army officer who told him that he feels at home wherever he can fight the hated Indian makes this animosity quite clear, as do the reviews of this book. What makes this book worth reading is Margolis's description of his involvement with the Mujahideen, in the American political lexicon of the day "freedom fighters" who did much to rid the world of the bane of Communism. Many of the points he makes, such as that the Taliban, however many flaws they had, were a huge improvement over anarchy with widespread rape and murder, are indispensable to a true understanding of Afghanistan, but rarely mentioned in the North American press.
Other parts of this book leave room for improvement. Margolis is not exactly a fan of the Hindu religion or the Indian government. He is not only critical, one of the few Western writers willing to describe the dirty war in Kashmir, but somewhat one-sided. In my opinion, Kashmir's strategic importance, India's fear of unraveling, its rivalry with Pakistan, and Nehru's Kashmiri provenance figure far more heavily in Kashmir's past and future than the considerations that Margolis describes in long detail. Margolis accepts China's invasion of Tibet as an unfortunate fact of life; there is no overlooking that he is less stoic about India's presence in Kashmir.
Given the pages of vitriol Margolis has to spare for India's caste system, which damns many to a life of poverty, he could have made more of Pakistan's incredible corruption - transparency international rates it as the 144th most corrupt country of 159 - which does so much to keep Pakistan in poverty, and for that matter, poorer than India. This oversight is particularly glaring as he waxes lyrically over what an improvement and opportunity Muslim rule was in India which is "only" the 88th most corrupt nation. Another quibble is that Margolis doesn't raise the possibility of brinkmanship in describing the Kargil standoff. The Pakistanis and Indians cordially dislike each other; nevertheless, I find it unlikely that they would have gone all the way, and mutually irradiated themselves over a small spit of land. The book could have used a better editor; there are some bad typos.
Even if you disagree with every word in this book, and perhaps especially if you disagree with every word in this book, it is well worth reading, because it provides a concise and well-written description of the beliefs of many Pakistanis, especially of many in the Pakistani military.
This is an interesting book written by a Hoya with a fascinating life, and well-worth reading.

Nice history, cutely written and illustrated........2006-02-17
I bought this book to read with my children (ages 8 and 10). I found the book interesting, and learned a bit about King George's youth. My children thought it wasokay, even though their father was forcing it on them. I even caught my wife sneaking a read.
The writing style is nice and folksy, and the illustrations are charmingly naive. The personal spin it places on the American Revolution, coupled with the emphasis on the British perspective, is a refreshing contrast to some of the more serious books I've read on revolutionary history.
All in all, a nice read.
A Bad Guy?!?!.......2004-10-24
King George is considered to be one of the greatest opponents of the American Revolution. But does anyone ever really hear of his good traits until now. And in a childrens book! Well I know I didn't. And after reading this short story I found that ole George wasn't such a bad guy after all. All he wanted was for Brittain to become, well...richer. Couldn't those colonists help pay for some of his debts. Well maybe, if those colonists actually had any SAY in British matters then they should have to pay taxes. Well I still think he wasn't a BAD guy, he just tried to take the easiest way out.
Tomie DePaola and Jean Fritz-I think-make the perfect team. His comical illustrations with her undefinable text make this book a classic.
Fritz or Freedman '04. You decide.
it's fun to read and you learn a lot from it.......2000-04-16
I learned all kinds of things about King George, Queen Charlotte and others. It really helped me with my research on the Revolutionary war. In this book you get to learn the funny things about King George and things that happened during his time.
Historically funny and accurate.......1999-01-02
Jean Fritz has created many fabulous books for children. "Can't You Make Them Behave, King George?" is one of my favorites. It shows the beginning of the American Revolution from the eyes of King George. The book is humerous and historically correct. Kids and adults will enjoy reading it together!

Customer Reviews:
Extremely well written.......2007-06-13
My children have enjoyed reading this series several times.
Great Kids Novel.......2007-01-10
I am a 5th Grade teacher (and a huge Star Wars fan), and I am using this book as a novel study in my class this year. The story closely resembles the movie, but you spend time inside the major characters' heads (which really adds to the kids' understanding of the events in the book - some of which are very mature themes).
We just finished talking about Chapter Nine, the Opera House, and the kids loved the way the scene between Palpatine and Anakin was written (where much of the subtext is left to the reader to decide about who Darth Plageous' apprentice is and what these Sith secrets mean for Anakin).
This is an exciting and compelling story, which has really resonated with both the boys AND girls in my class. A great book to add to the home or classroom library - and a great read for any Star Wars fan!
An entertaining read.......2005-05-23
I always find that the junior novelizations stay closer to the actual movie storyline and I wasn't disappointed with this one. But what I find great about the Star Wars ones is that they are written in a fashion that pleases both kids and adults alike. The adult novelization usually covers more detail but this one is no slouch either. And like the other readers, I am a sucker for color pictures and actual stills from the movie. Great book and an excellent final addition to my Star Wars library.
Revenge of the Sith.......2005-04-20
A little less intense than the adult version- although not by much- the junior novelization of Episode III tells the story very well. As pretty much everyone knows this is the one where Anakin becomes Darth Vader, so it's a given that this was a very dark book, more so than any other Star Wars book I've ever read.
I think it's worth saying that there was almost no mention of Chewbacca and the wookies. Based on this, it looks like the role of the wookies has been severly exaggerated, which is a huge disappointment to me since that was something I was looking forward to in the movie.
Overall, however, this is a great book that I'm sure you'll enjoy reading.
Dont read if you dont want the secrets to be revealed.......2005-04-18
Anakin goes evil because the sith tells him that he can keep padme from dying using the dark side of the force.
Anakin kills all the jedi including jedi kids.
When Obi-Wan tells padme at first she doesnt believe him.
Anakin trys to kill padme when she tells him that what he did was wrong.
He battles with Obi-Wan.
At first they seem equal, then with the dark side Anakin has the advantage.
Obi-Wan has to let go of all his love for anakin and when he does he sends him into the fire which seems to kill anakin.
Sidius comes back and sees anakin just barely alive. the only way to keep him living is by building darth vader.
Padme dies and gives up hope because anakin has broken her heart by turning to the dark side.
They are able to get luke and leia out in time. they decide to separate them.
Thats pretty much the end of the book.

Book Description
Taking an eye-opening new approach to Egyptian history, Chronicle of a Pharaoh presents a unique and intimate portrait of Amenhotep III, the man and self-proclaimed god who presided over the zenith of Egypt's greatness. Through an unprecedented wealth of details--from the day-to-day running of a huge empire to his clothes, cats, and bedroom habits--the private and public faces of a pharaoh are vividly brought to life as never before. Joann Fletcher explores Amenhotep's private and public life in a compelling year-by-year account, drawing on firsthand and previously unpublished material. Among the many subjects covered are his daily schedule, such as bedchamber ceremonies and meetings with ministers; his relations with rulers of other ancient superpowers, recorded in a lively correspondence covering topics from new wives to the price of silver; his family life, including the remarkable role of his wife, Queen Tiy; the superlative art of the reign; and his monumental construction projects--among them the great temple of Luxor. Amenhotep III also established the cult of Aten, the sun disk, and after Amenhotep's death his son, the rebel pharaoh Akhenaten, became fanatically obsessed with the god. Illustrated with spectacular full-color photographs, maps, and artifacts, many of which are published here for the first time, Chronicle of a Pharaoh provides the full context for understanding the monarch who presided over the magnificent flowering of Egyptian civilization.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful book, well written and great to look at.......2007-03-24
Non-fiction biography with great color photographs on every single page; the book is worth it just for those. It is a well written biography of the father of Akenahaten. It is interesting to learn that he was dabbling in an interest in the "Aten" god cult prior to his son Akhenaten's obsession with it later on when he became sole ruler.
I recently went to a museum show of objects sent from the British museum, interestingly the majority were objects found in the pages of this book! Unbelievable to see them in real life!! A great experience.
Amenhotep III, The Sun King.......2004-09-22
A very nice hard-cover book with wonderful full color plates and a wealth of information concerning his intimate life, not overly concentrating on his building projects but more on his personal life.
It's worth looking through.......2001-10-05
First of all, the design of the book is exquisite; it's a pleasure to leaf through this book, full of colorful high-quality illustrations. After reading it, however, I found the content a bit disappointing, most of it was re-hashing of the fairly well-known facts, although with a few interesting tidbits sprinkled throughout. This book would be great for someone with a passing interest in Ancient Egypt, it gives a good general overview of what life might have been like during the New Kingdom.
Amenhotep Dazzles.......2001-02-03
Chronicle of a Pharaoh is a readable in-depth look at pharaoh Amenhotep III, one of the three greatest kings of ancient Egypt. The layout is superb as it chronicles his life with a year-by-year format. Contains a generous amount of personal minutae, reinforced with pictures and plates on almost every page. Outstanding in all respects, this one is a keeper.
A full picture of a pharaoh.......2000-12-02
I agree with the first reviewer--it's amazing that Joann Fletcher has pieced together so much about Amenhotep and presents it in a way that conveys an actual life. The little details, like the name of his family cat, make this book tons of fun. An all-around beautiful book.

The Battles, the Leaders, the Presidents - And How Their Paths Intertwined
Triangle Histories introduce a new concept for American history series. Each title interweaves, intersects, and overlaps with others in its own unique way. And each title provides a different perspective on the broad subject at hand.
Because the Triangle Histories provide a format in which major subjects and themes can be considered from various angles, each collection offers a truly multi-dimensional way to learn and understand more completely. Though each book stands alone, as a set the Revolutionary War collection forms a powerful and engaging way in which to learn about one of the greatest struggles our country has ever endured.

When a meteor strike wipes out their new-born research station on the recently discovered planet of Centauri III, Dr. Jefferson Trask is left with little more than five critically injured survivors, no supplies, and a long six-month wait for the return of Pegasus, the mother ship. Centauri III is a wild and primitive world that challenges Trask's ability to survive at every step, and threatens to take his friends from him with each labored breath they draw.
The native food, the water, and the very air he breathes, combine to change him, and by the time Pegasus does return, Jefferson Trask has mutated into an entirely different being. He is a new creature, not human, not alien; totally different. And that difference will deal him the cruelest betrayal of all.

Book Description
In the reauthorization of the Clean Water Act in 1987, the U.S. EPA specifically addressed toxics management. In addition to the requirement to eliminate discharge of toxics, there can be a requirement to conduct a toxicity reduction evaluation (TRE). The scope of toxicity reduction varies from the very simple and inexpensive to the highly complex and costly. This book, volume three of the Water Quality Management Library, provides a complete overview of toxicity reduction evaluation. The book presents the testing and removal of toxicants, toxicity testing procedures, sampling techniques, baseline collection data, and source identification. Plus, the book presents toxicity reduction methodologies including unit processes necessary for organic toxicant control using biological and physical chemical methodologies as well as selected unit processes necessary for inorganic toxicant control.
