Book Description
A master guide to social skills instruction for anyone working with children and adolescents.
Youth who make poor decisions, have difficulty making friends, fight, and generally behave badly often do so because they never have learned the social behaviors many of us take for granted.
Their inability to cope with everyday situations makes them vulnerable to an array for problems, including self-defeating behaviors and self-destructive impulses.
Teaching Social Skills to Youth describes one of the most effective ways to help improve the behavior of young people. More than 180 social skills, from the basic (following instructions and introducing yourself) to the complex (stress management and conflict resolution), are broken down into component behaviors to aid the learning process. The book also explains the teaching techniques that enable youth to recognize when, where, or with whom to use a particular skill.
Teaching Social Skills to Youth is an ideal resource in the classroom, in counseling or therapy, and in job training programs. It's also the perfect companion book to Treatiang Youth with DSM-IV Disorders: The Role of Social Skill Instruction.

Practical Guide for Teaching Social Skills.......2004-09-21
This is a wonderful book for teachers, parents or anyone who wants to become more effective in helping children to use good social skills. It is very practical and useful. Various skills that children frequently have difficulty with are broken down into simple steps, easy to master and practice. For example: How to Accept Criticism; How to Disagree; How to Accepts No for an answer. What is difficult and often vague is simpified for children in a very clever and interesting way. For this middle school teacher, it was a great help and a very effective and easy way to teach what is so often lacking and difficult for children this age.

Teaching Social Skills To Youth is very highly recommended to parents, day care providers, school counselors, and elementary classroom teachers.
Book Description
During Reconstruction, an alliance of southern planters and northern capitalists rebuilt the southern railway system using remnants of the Confederate railroads that had been built and destroyed during the Civil War. In the process of linking Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia by rail, this alliance created one of the largest corporations in the world, engendered bitter political struggles, and transformed the South in lasting ways, says Scott Nelson.
Iron Confederacies uses the history of southern railways to explore linkages among the themes of states' rights, racial violence, labor strife, and big business in the nineteenth-century South. By 1868, Ku Klux Klan leaders had begun mobilizing white resentment against rapid economic change by asserting that railroad consolidation led to political corruption and black economic success. As Nelson notes, some of the Klan's most violent activity was concentrated along the Richmond-Atlanta rail corridor. But conflicts over railroads were eventually resolved, he argues, in agreements between northern railroad barons and Klan leaders that allowed white terrorism against black voters while surrendering states' control over the southern economy.

Interpreting post bellum southern development.......2007-03-16
As the title suggests, Scott Reynolds monograph focuses on Southern railroad development from a political, social and economic perspective. Before the war states rights advocates prevented connecting tracks between the states for fear of losing control of established economic patterns. Rail development was also limited by the shortage of investment capital. To raise money states guaranteed stock by a system called "hypethecation" which made the stock marketable abroad. During the war connecting links were forged out of necessity, but wartime use and shortages left the system in a deplorable state. The author well describes this in the harrowing tale of CSA President Davis and his family evacuating Richmond in 1865. The struggle for control after the Civil War pits the conservative elements, i.e. the Klan, against the new economic opportunity of freedmen. The railroad feeds the violence between the two, sparked in Alamance, NC and Spartenburg, SC.
In Reconstruction control is usurped from A. B. Andrews' innovative southern business, the Seaboard Inland Air Line, by a northerner, Tom Scott. He invents the concept of the holding company which served the purpose of shielding those really in power with the result that investors now could confidently put money in securities and not fictional "hypethecated" investments. Money dried up for Southern investors leaving Northerners in control. But peace demanded accommodation. Cotton and tobacco filled rail cars perpetuating staple agricultural and Southern conservatives achieved redemption. On the other hand African Americans suffered a new humiliation in laboring under a convict labor system.
Nelson's scope is limited to the important route between Richmond and Atlanta. However it is in this key area that events lead him to his compelling argument that railroads in the south served to limit democratic authority, continued the South's reliance on agriculture, and perpetuated conservative authority.
The importance of through freight between the states, despite state imposed political impediments, is evident by the bill of lading. Andrews, in putting together the Seaboard Inland Air Line and using the bill of lading, provided rapid transit by multiple companies. An "air line" was more nebulous and less subject to state regulation and restrictions. Not only that, but a bill of lading was legal title to the freight. Knowledge of how to use this marketing power was found in New York wholesalers, not local merchants transferring control to the north.
Nelson's argument that railroads in the south served to limit democratic authority, continued the South's reliance on agriculture, and perpetuated conservative authority adds to other scholars interpretations of post bellum southern development.
Book Description
Originally published by UNC Press in 1952, The Railroads of the Confederacy tells the story of the first use of railroads on a major scale in a major war. Robert Black presents a complex and fascinating tale, with the railroads of the American South playing the part of tragic hero in the Civil War: at first vigorous though immature; then overloaded, driven unmercifully, starved for iron; and eventually worn outstruggling on to inevitable destruction in the wake of Sherman's army, carrying the Confederacy down with them.
With maps of all the Confederate railroads and contemporary photographs and facsimiles of such documents as railroad tickets, timetables, and soldiers' passes, the book will captivate railroad enthusiasts as well as readers interested in the Civil War.

CONFEDERACY'S WEAKEST ASSET.......2007-10-12
A MAJOR INOVATION IN THE CIVIL WAR WAS THE STRATEGIC USE OF RAILROADS ON BOTH SIDES. THE CONDITION OF THE SOUTHERN RAILROADS AFFECTED BOTH THE CONFEDERACY AND THE UNION IN THIS WAR. DIFFERENT GUAGES OF TRACKS, WHETHER THE TRACKS RAN NORTH AND SOUTH OR EAST AND WEST WAS OF GREAT IMPORTANCE. THE ABILITY TO REPRODUCE CAPTURES OR DESTROYED ROLLING STOCK AND RAILS WAS A MAJOR FACTOR. IN THIS WORK BLACK ENLIGHTENS US TO THE PROBLEMS AND PROGRESS OF THE CONDEDERACY'S RAILROADS AND GIVES US A CLEAR PICTURE OF THEIR OPERATION AND MILITARY VALUE. A BOOK WELL WORTH READING.
A very useful and fascinating book.......2000-01-20
After reading dozens of scholarly books, and writing published articles related to the Civil War myself, this book was a refreshing read. It is a reminder of the enormity of the task faced by the bureaucrats and businessmen behind the Confederate armies. Yes, the tide did turn at Gettysburg.
But for those who like to play "What if?" and speculate on the fortunes of war, this book is a bleak testimony to the long odds the south confronted. The Confederate States were almost completely unequipped to fight a modern, industrial war.
One shortcoming of this book, and it is a minor one, is that the story is told primarily through the eyes of railroad tycoons, and ignores to a great extent the perspective of well-known military personalities. This stems in part from the fact that Black relies heavily on the railroads themselves (their annual reports) for his source material. More research from military source material would round the picture out.
On the whole, however, Mr. Black must be commended. As I said, "fascinating."
IMPORTANCE OF RAIL TRANSPORTATION DURING THE CIVIL WAR.......1998-06-27
This was a fascinating book as it put the Civil War into a slightly different context. It spotlighted the fact that many of the the major battles were fought over areas which were strategic rail centers - the best example being Atlanta.
It also clearly pointed out that the South was severely hampered by three different track gauges limiting the ready ability to carry freight long distances. In addition, even though the track gauges of a connecting railroad might have been the same, many of them were state owned. And some states would not permit rolling stock to cross state lines. This meant offloading and reloading freight at the state border.
And the Southern railroads never came under a unified control until very late in the War - in contrast to the North. And the South only had about a third of the track miles that the North had.
I highly recommend this book to any serious student of Civil War history. You don't even have to be a rail fan to enjoy it.

Book Description
An important book of epic scope on America's first racially integrated, religiously inspired movement for change
The civil war brought to a climax the country's bitter division. But the beginnings of slavery's denouement can be traced to a courageous band of ordinary Americans, black and white, slave and free, who joined forces to create what would come to be known as the Underground Railroad, a movement that occupies as romantic a place in the nation's imagination as the Lewis and Clark expedition. The true story of the Underground Railroad is much more morally complex and politically divisive than even the myths suggest. Against a backdrop of the country's westward expansion arose a fierce clash of values that was nothing less than a war for the country's soul. Not since the American Revolution had the country engaged in an act of such vast and profound civil disobedience that not only challenged prevailing mores but also subverted federal law.
Bound for Canaan tells the stories of men and women like David Ruggles, who invented the black underground in New York City; bold Quakers like Isaac Hopper and Levi Coffin, who risked their lives to build the Underground Railroad; and the inimitable Harriet Tubman. Interweaving thrilling personal stories with the politics of slavery and abolition, Bound for Canaan shows how the Underground Railroad gave birth to this country's first racially integrated, religiously inspired movement for social change.

Audio version: Fast-paced and fascinating history.......2007-09-11
I listened to the abridged audio version on CD and thoroughly enjoyed it. Read by the author, it is in interesting study that contains a number of riveting stories.
I have two minor complaints about this audio version. One is that the author's voice sometimes drops into a range that can be inaudible if you are listening in a vehicle with traffic noise around you. The other is that maps are not included in the CD set. Fortunately my public library had a copy of the book so that I was able to examine the maps and various illustrations. The maps were of interest to me since a couple of my great-great-grandfathers supposedly sheltered escaped slaves, one near the Ohio River and another in Philadelphia.
Overall, this is an enjoyable and inspiring book that raises questions about civil disobedience that we must ponder in order to understand the complexity of our history. I wholeheartedly recommend the audio version to those who like audiobooks. It is as exciting as an adventure novel, and you can supplement it with a hardcopy if you want.
More than Harriet Tubman.......2007-01-14
Harriet Tubman was a great lady, and she did not simply help the slaves to freedom -- she helped move America to a better place. Growing up, whenever I heard or read of the Underground Railroad, Ms. Tubman's name came up again and again. This book expands the vision of the Undergound Railroad and shows it as a part of something much bigger in our history.
First, the book does discuss the railroad and how it works. The reader gets an idea of the perils involved and the logistics behind helping a slave to freedom. This was no easy task, and this books shows the reader not just how brave the conductors were, but how brave the "passengers" were.
Second, the book discusses the fortitude and determination of the different people who tried to make America better by fighting the injustices of slavery. We learn of the battles of the press as well as the battle of the gun. This was a dark time in our history, and the author does a good job in illuminating us to the various people that tried to illuminate their time.
Lastly, the book explains what else happened. In school, we learned that the Underground Railroad helped slaves to freedom. That was about it. There is more to the story, and the author explains this to us. We also see that just getting to the North didn't make things better. There were still things that needed to happen to help the slaves create their new life.
In all, I would highly recommend reading this book. It brings a much more enlightened perspective to this part of American history.
A Great Book, Could Have Used a Little Editing.......2006-10-05
I really enjoyed this book, which fleshes out for the first time, based on significant new research, the numerous heroes and participants who risked their lives for freedom from slavery. A few insights in the book were new to me:
1. I had no idea how crippling and discriminatory the laws were against blacks who lived in "free states." Most of the time they could not vote, own property, needed affidavits in order to move or get a job, were subject to kidnapping by freelance slave catchers -- it was pretty horrible.
2. I did not realize the critical role that radical, truth-to-power religion, in particular but not exclusively the Quakers, played in ending the evil practice of slavery. These folks risked financial ruin, stonings, beatings, and criminal charges to put in practice their moral view -- based on their faith -- that slavery in all forms must end. They deserve our thanks and praise, and we should remember them as we are faced with current moral conflicts that call out for action based on our beliefs.
3. I found especially interesting the debates in Congress in the 1850s in support of the federal Fugitive Slave Act, and the justifications used by supporters of slavery to denigrate the abolitionists. Indeed, Mr. Bordewich makes the point that even in "free" states, a measure of your worth as a politician was how "tough" you were on abolitionists, in the same sense that today politicians are expected to be "tough" on communism.
But what was interesting to me was that slave supporters like Daniel Webster justified the practice based on the Bible (cherry picking quotes that supposedly support the practice); science (blacks were intellectually inferior and like animals who require our feeding and care); inalienable property rights (the slaves were chattel and were necessary in order for owners to make productive use of their land); and also anti-Europe prejudice (the abolitionists are getting all of their crazy ideas from Europe). These concepts are still being used today to justify social policies that may in the distant future seem equally morally bankrupt.
I did think, however, the book could have used a little editing. I found it a bit difficult to keep up with so many historical figures, and perhaps some of their activities could have been trimmed in the interests of narrative flow.
But in all, a highly readable book and a substantial step forward in terms of historical scholarship.
Excellent.......2006-10-01
An excellent historical and scholarly read that provides a detailed history of the Underground Railroad. The book goes into great depths to document the people that successfully and unsuccessfully escaped slavery as well as those that helped them and those that didn't. As with any story dealing with historical events there are some parts that are difficult to read through because of their tragedy (how could the barbaric system of American slavery existed such a short time ago?). However those areas are offset by stories of hope and celebration of those that were successful. It was interesting to discover what lead to successful passage - some times skill, some times just luck.
A longer read that other books on this subject it was very thorough. Because it's based on real people and real events it's not dry like some historic works. The only suggestion was that this book could have benefited from more pictures, maps, diagrams, etc. Overall extremely good.
More Than Just History.......2006-05-15
Like many other reviewers I found this book provacative and profoundly insightful. Mr. Bordewich is to be congratulated for a work well done. Yesterday I recommended a lawyer purchase this book for her city planner friend, a black woman living in Pennsylvania who wanted to research her family. It makes one realize how far we have come in the last two hundred years, and how far we have yet to go. This book offers timely perspective on what Bordewich termed the first civil rights movement in the United States: the underground railroad. It details paths and patterns and disunity that I've not seen in one volume. It is sometimes a rough read at night--face to face with the inhumanity of man makes for difficult dreams and restless sleep. The equally generous and independent spirits who worked on the railroad at enormous personal cost and often fatal consequences is well documented.
California, like much of the nation, is currently having upheavals and dissent about immigration policy. The parallels in this book about immigration are timely: Canada welcomed the displaced and runaway slaves and free blacks with open arms and earned their undying loyalty. We could learn from this example with our current immigration discussion and policy proposals, instead of viewing people simply as plantation labor.
It's been a month since I finished reading this book, and I find myself returning to it in my thoughts. There was much work done by the founding fathers and mothers, and much left undone for future generations. Discussion and resolution of slavery has consumed significant portions of this nation's energy. It would be easy to call that growing pains. This book is a shining beacon on the hill to anyone seeking greater understanding of that time and policies that have shaped the present.

an excellent collection of tensile structures in the world.......1999-08-28
The book offers critical insights into a large collection of tensile structures around the world. Although one would wish for more colour pictures, the information provided is informative and could easily be followed if needed. The book is suitable for professionals and students alike. However, given the rapid development in this area, I wonder if the authors would consider publishing a revision or an expanded edition. Overall, very well done.

Customer Reviews:
Good reference.......2007-09-22
This is a good reference for cable-supported bridges. It should be in the library of anyone designing or evaluating cable-supported bridges.
There are a few points I wish the author had addressed, such as a discussion of safety factors in main cables, durability of main cables as related to corrosion and wire breakage (there is a brief discussion of corrosion), and the role of cable bands in mitigating the effect of wire breakage.
Very helpful!!!.......2006-07-03
I found this book cery useful, it is well organized and if you read it very carefully it is easy to understand. The equations presented to obtain preliminary dimensions are very useful and wuite accurate. Also provides the concepts to design the cables and verify the design of them. It also has a few basic examples and graphics that help in the understandig of the theory.
This book basically it is based in the design of the cables, how and why they work in the bridges. If you are looking to understand the concept of cable supported bridges and get the basic equations and recomendations for its design this is the book. However if you want a recipie for designing this kind of bridges and don't knowing why or how it works, good luck.
The most complete book on cable supported bridges.......2001-03-20
If you work with cable-stay bridges or suspension bridges, this is the reference!. All the issues you'll find in your work are in the book . Prof. Gimsing is very clear and concise. Worth every buck you paid!
FIVE STARS.......1999-09-13
This is an awesome book on cable supported bridges. Even the most recently built bridges can be found in this book.
A great book for advanced readers.......1999-08-10
This is an excellent book for bridge designers and engineers who want to know how and why cable supported structures work.
The book is less suitable for those engineers (typically North American) who merely expect recipes ("tell me how to do it, not why or how it works").
