    Book Description

Originally laid down as one of six giant battle cruisers, the Saratoga survived the 1922 Washington Disarmament Treaty's cutting torch through her conversion to a new and seemingly benign type of vessel-the aircraft carrier. She reported for fduty off Long Beach, CA in 1927 and for the next twelve years trained the men who would eventually fight World War II. One of only three carriers on duty at the outset of World War II, Saratoga, at one point, was the sole American carrier available to Naval Aviation. She suffered two torpedo attacks and a horrifying kamikaze attack, and was reported sunk many times by the Japanese. Refitted as a night-attack carrier, then relegated to the role of training carrier, Saratoga survived the war only to be sacrificed in the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll in 1946. No carrier, or ship, played a greater role in developing the men and tactics that became the massive force that United States Naval Aviation., over 200 b/w photographs, 8 1/2" x 11"

This a great book in terms of pictures and the history of the USS Saratoga. It is about as complete a book on this ship that you will find. From the moment she was created to the day she was sunk in Bikini Atoll's lagoon by the US weapons tests, this book covers it all in GREAT detail.

    Book Description

The Second World War was a classic period in the development and perfection of propeller-driven aircraft. Built during the crisis of wartime, these aircraft and the cockpits within them were marvels of technology, ingenuity and design. Cockpit is the first book that puts the reader into the pilot's seat of these superb classic aircraft.

Cockpit is rich in historical photographs of the insides of dozens of the most celebrated, and feared, aircraft-American, British, Japanese, Russian and German. These vintage photographs and a candid "pilot's perspective" on each interior offer a unique behind-the-scenes view not only of the extraordinary aircraft, but also of the heroic men who flew them. Cockpits depicted include:

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Photography.......2007-01-07

Great reference for aircraft interior from a pilots viewpoint. Excellent photography of a confined dark space.

2 out of 5 stars Little Hallmark Dots.......2006-06-16

Other folks have weighed in on the content of the book, so I have no need to do that. My comment will center on the aspect of the photography that spoiled the book for me. The crew obviously had applied little colored circular stickers to the various instruments so they could be coded for the captions. That was all fine and well, but 75% of the photographs were taken with the stickers still in place. It was sloppy work. Carping, perhaps, but I expected better. The same comments apply to the volume dealing with Cold War aircraft.

    3 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings.......2005-04-01

It's difficult to rate this because it depends upon what you expected this book to be. I had hoped that it would essentially be a reference for each aircraft showing all aspects of the cockpit with descriptions of the instruments and controls. This it is NOT. The photography is very nice but is strictly evocative and not really illustrative. It shows the instrument panels but in a way that hides essential details that I desire to see. Oh well, perhaps next time :-)

4 out of 5 stars Good, unique book, but could've been better.......2003-01-08

I'm ... only giving it 4 stars. Nijboer and Patterson came up with a great idea, but missed a little in the execution. As a modeler, I'd like to see more details of the entire cockpit, not just the instrument panels. Also, I realize Mr Patterson is an accomplished professional photographer, but I was a little disappointed with the nature of many of the shots. I think he was trying for dramatic lighting effects, but ended up with many parts of the cockpit in dark shadow or nearly washed out by flash. ...

5 out of 5 stars New standard for close up fotography !.......2002-04-09

I bought Gunner, an illustrated history of world war 2 aircraft turrets and gunpositions (by the same authors) first so I knew what to expect when I bought this book. Cockpit is probably the first book with amazing picture quality and in my eyes the standard for years to come. The pictures of the Hawker Typhoon and the Douglas A-20 Havoc are special to me because they are my favourite World War 2 airplanes. I've seen a few of these airplanes in real life but I didn't have the chance to see the cockpit up close. Because of the pictures of Dan Patterson it is now possible to walk in the footsteps of World War 2 pilots and try to imagine what it was like to fly these airplanes. I hope that the authors of these two magnificent books (Cockpit and Gunner) can find the inspiration to bring out more books like this, because these books are two of the finest in my collection.

    Book Description

The first military air drops were initiated by a critical ground situation at Kut-el-Amara in Mesopotamia (now Iraq). Twenty ssupply sorties were flown on 14 April 1916 dropping 3500lbs of food to the beleaguered troops. Between the wars air transport was to be developed as a main method of supply and support to the major nation's empires and colonies. During World War II aircraft were not only used as a suppy method but as a strike weapon, carrying paratroops and their equipment . These aircraft also towed another strike transport aircraft - the glider.

4 out of 5 stars Often Forgotten About , Yet So Essential........2003-05-31

We all like to glamorise the Airforces of the world with their high technology driven fighters and the glory days of old. But we seldom spare a though for the now major element in every airforce's inventory - airlift transport.

We move through to the present day and the future with even bigger aircraft on the drawing boards. It's hard to see nowdays life without these heavy transports to move entire divisions and their equipment around the world to be ready for action within hours, let alone relief aid.

Richard Townshend Bickers takes us through the history of military air transport that has always been around since guns were placed on airframes a little under 100 years ago.

Illustrated with lots of pictures from all side during the major conflicts we get to see some familliar aircraft in military guise as well as some rare gems such as the Budd Conestoga and the high winged Douglas DC5, both aircraft a much superior design than the ubiquitous Douglas DC3/C47. The fact that mass production was the only reason that the C47 succeeded is proof of this.

The only bug in this book is a better history of the Russian heavylifters and the written storyline dosen't follow the picture format to well. Still a great book for those with an interest mainly the younger variety.

        Book Description

Stalin's Eagles is the most complete and detailed book ever published on the Soviet aces. All of the great names are here: Kozhedub, Pokryshkin, Rechkalov, Koldunov, Popkov and numerous others whose thrilling exploits were an inspiration to their comrades, and who handily outscored the top American and British aces. Hundreds of portraits illuminate the lives of many aces, most unknown to western readers, and the desperate struggles of these outstanding fighter pilots who in the end were to make the skies above Eastern Europe their fiefdom. The history of the Soviet fighter command in World War II began in tragedy with the slaughter of inexperienced squadrons by the triumphant Luftwaffe. Read here of their dramatic recovery and the terrible losses of the Luftwaffe at the hands of Russian elite pilots as they were winning complete supremacy in the air. In almost four years of continuous action, the Soviet air forces were credited with destroying over 43,000 enemy aircraft in aerial combat producing some 800 aces with 15 or more kills. Illustrated with over 300 photographs, many taken from the personal collections of veteran pilots, and supplemented by exhaustive statistical information this unique record represents a major research effort and will prove fascinating to all who have an interest in the history of aerial warfare. For the first time the deeds and feats of the Shturmovik aces Ð the tank hunters and assault aircraft of the Soviet Air Force Ð are recorded in detail, and an entire chapter presents the history of all Soviet fighter units. Little known in the West, Soviet pilots flew over Korea and many achieved ace status Ð all are named here with details of their careers and aerial victories. Forewords are by twice hero of the Soviet Union V.I. Popkov, himself an ace with 41 kills in World War II and three more in Korea, and GŸnther Rall, number three ace of all time with 275 aerial victories., over 470 b/w photographs, 16 color aircraft profiles, 9" x 12", appendices

        Book Description

The Heinkel He 219 was acknowledged by friend and foe alike as one of the most outstanding night fighters of World War II. In 1942, Heinkel received a contract to develop the twin-engined He 219. Not only was the He 219 very fast, with a maximum speed in excess of 600 km/h, but it also possessed excellent maneuverability, had a well-designed cockpit, and was equipped with airborne radar. The He 219 was the first German production aircraft to have a tricycle undercarriage and ejector seats for both crew members. The author provides many previously unpublished details in describing the development history of the He 219, the technology it employed, its testing, production, and use in combat., over 160 b/w and color photographs, 8 1/2"x11"

5 out of 5 stars An informative history of the unsung Uhu 219.......2007-04-03

As an amateur German 'cool hardware' junky I found this book to be precisely what I was looking for. Despite admissions of inadequacy by the author, what is within the book is certainly enough to give the reader a solid appreciation of both the history and the capabilities of this aircraft.

The Uhu was one of the best twin-engine fighter/interceptors in the air during its operational lifetime, and most people have never heard of it.

Full of photos, tech-accurate professional paintings, diagrams, and knowledgeable exposition. Top-notch job.

        4 out of 5 stars fans of a history.......2001-05-14

The book will be interesting to all fans of a history of aircrafts, the detailed enough material is given in the chronological order. Though the book is perfectly issued, the quality of photos leaves to wish best. The drawings are simply amazing! Good the book worth to the price.

Taylor's is a reasonably good book, lucid, witty. I read it cover to cover the day before my final High School History exam, it gave me a decent overview of the war, its causes, practices and effects. 'Illustrated' is somewhat a misnomer...there's maybe a picture every second page, but otherwise, I recommend this book.

          Book Description

Profusely illustrated and rare photographic history of the Volkswagen car and its military use in Hitler's Third Reich.

When Volkswagen burst upon the American automobile scene in the 1960s, it established a reputation for both economy and reliability. Few who drove the original sixties' "Love Bug" knew that the vehicle was the creation of Adolf Hitler in the days of the Third Reich. Originally intended as a symbol of prewar prosperity, the Volkswagen, or "people's car," eventually became a key element in the Nazi war machine.

With the outbreak of World War II, the production of the Volkswagen car was adapted for military use, and the Kubelwagen, German "jeep," was designed and manufactured throughout Germany. A special amphibious version, the "Schwimmwagen," was later developed and spearheaded many major German offensives. Appearing in several variants, Volkswagen vehicles became the mainstay of German command and motorized units.

This detailed history of the Volkswagen in the 1930s and 1940s covers all varieties of makes and models of the Volkswagen in use during the Third Reich and is richly illustrated with rare photographs of the vehicles themselves, technical drawings, engine designs, and sales brochures of the period.

              3 out of 5 stars Warrior's Travelog.......2001-10-03

Heinrich Vossler, a young Wurttemberg cavalry officer, has left a gripping tale of Napoleon's campaigns of 1812 and 1813 as well as an account of life as an allied POW. His description of the Russian catastrophe is particularly noteworthy - a true reminder of the horrors of war. Vossler also took time to observe the countryside through which he traveled and their inhabitants (good & bad), leaving behind some wry comments. Recommended for students of the Russian campaign and for those researching Napoleon's German contingents. My copy is from the Folio Society, grimly adorned with lithographs by Faber du Faur.

                    Book Description

Critiques of Knowing explores what happens to science and computing when we think of them as texts. Lynette Hunter elegantly weaves together such vast areas of thought as rhetoric, politics, AI, computing, feminism, science studies, aesthetics and epistemology. This book shows us that what we need is a radical shake-up of approaches to the arts if the critiques of science and computing are to come to any fruition.
