Talk Before Sleep.......2007-08-09
Somewhat dragged out, belabored but certainly a good story of loyalty and friendship as well as courage.
Beautiful.......2007-05-13
Berg is one of my favorite writers. I bought this book and tried to read it at one point, but one got through one chapter and then shelved this one.
A few months ago, I pulled it back out and started reading. I could not put this book down! Berg develops her characters so beautifully, realistically. The description, and "everyday" doings are true to life, which is why I almost always enjoy her books.
This book devastated me, made me sob, but was not a cheesy story in any way. I would recommend this book. It's a quick read, and totally worth it.
Not sappy but sad.......2007-03-09
This was a really heartwrenching story of the death of one woman's dear friend. I was so impressed with how Elizabeth Berg wrote about the intimate relationship between the two main characters. She just does such an amazing job that I can't even articulate what it is she does. I thought the story was very good, the writing was amazing and the reading was effortless.
Good storyline.......2007-01-15
This is a very good book dealing w/a woman dying of breast cancer and a very dear friendship that must travel down this sad path.
I highly recommend it as it is a well written book; the storyline is well done and it is not cheesey etc. but very touching and uplifting.
Much more than a book about cancer.......2006-11-19
This was a wonderfully heartbreaking story about female friends dealing with cancer. It made me sob but I loved it. Don't buy it for a long plane journey though - I read mine in the first 3 hours of a 10 hour stint, couldn't put it down.

A new Father's thoughts........2001-02-02
I could only image what my two month old daughter thinks as she smiles at me,"I know this man; he is my father, who loves me and cherishes me, and he will protect me. I know his voice because before I was even born, he spoke to me and comforted me. I know that I already love him, even though I can only let him know this with my little smile." Phoebe is at peace with her mother and me because we used the Sleep Talk scripts. And, we are convinced that Phoebe sleeps all night because we continue to use Sleep Talk today.
Sleep Talk works.......2000-11-20
What this book does is provide words (scripts) of encouragement to read to your child while they sleep to help with problems they might be experiencing. For example, my son wouldn't go to sleep easy AND would wake up more that once during the night. Getting him back to sleep took some time. This went on for two years. We tried everything including the Ferber method. Within three days of using one of the scripts in the book it was easy to get him to sleep. If he did wake during the night he would go back to sleep on his own or be easy to sooth and fall asleep. This was using a script right from the book. Even more amazing was when we would fight with him to give nebulizer treatments. As I fought with him through a treatment I made sure he knew what the nebulizer was and it was good medicine. That night I read a script I wrote using the same words I used during his treatment. The next day he was calm and took the "good medicine." This book provides scripts for many situations and gives you the tools to write your own scripts. It is easy to understand and you can be using the method in short time.
A Wonderful Tool for Childrearing.......2000-08-01
How I wish I'd had this book when raising my children! It's now at the top of my list for new parents. Not only does the author give specific scripts to use with children as they sleep (with impressive results from clients), she offers wonderful little tidbits on dealing with issues that arise in all families. All of this is presented in a loving, thoughtful, intelligent and logical manner. One of my favorites is the "one-finger" technique. Instead of saying, "No, don't touch that!", she suggests, "You may touch that with one finger." When I'm fortunate enough to have grandchildren, much of what is presented in this gem of a book will be put to good use.
Sleep Talk.......2000-03-29
I cannot say enough about this book! I, too, am an author and met the author of Sleep Talk through our work. I tried the techniques on my eight-year-old son because I was having trouble getting him ready for school in the mornings. He was always grumpy and would wait until the last minute to put his shoes on and get his backpack ready. I hated fighting in the morning and was desperate to have the harmony we used to enjoy before he started school.
Even though I believed in the book, I was shocked by the results. The first night I told my son (after he feel asleep) how proud his father and I were at his ability to wake up with a smile and get ready for school with a great attitude. Sure enough, the next morning he woke up smiling, got dressed right away and had his shoes and backpack on... an hour before we even had to leave! It was unbelievable. And, our mornings are still great, over a year later. I still use the techniques in Sleep Talk regularly and probably always will!
Help Your Child Thrive!.......1999-12-10
Using the techniques offered in this book can change your child's life! It clearly tells parents how, through the use of nightly Sleep talk, childern can receive messages of a parent's love and acceptance. The book contains numerous scripts and clear instructions on how to use this method to bond with your child and offer him or her age appropriate suggestions to assist in decision making and the development of self-confidence. A master index to the Sleep Talk scripts is found at the end of the book, making this book an easy-to-use resource throughout your child's development. It would be wonderful if every parent, grandparent and caregiver were given a copy of this book and used the techniques so respectully offered by the author. This is a simple and loving way to bond with your child and positively impact his or her development. This book will enrich your life and the life of your child.

Book Description
"Is he sleeping through the night?" Put this question to any new parent and you'd better brace yourself for the response. In a society that equates a sleeping baby with a good baby, night waking has become perhaps the most emotionally-charged parenting issue of all. In Search of Sleep offers a unique and welcome approach to a timeless topic. Author Bonny Reichert - a journalist and mother of two - decided after her first child was born that waking to comfort a crying baby in the wee hours isn't a mistake - it's a choice. Here, she delves into the sleep issue with intelligence, sensitivity, and humour. Based on a survey conducted by Today's Parent magazine. Reichert's work is peppered with advice and sympathetic words from the parents of night wakers. Readers will find: - A review of popular sleep training techniques and the science of sleep cycles - An exploration of the myths that surround night waking - An examination of the effects that the generation gap, culture and expert advice can have on parents - A treasure-trove of coping strategies Encompassing a range of parenting styles and sleep practices, In Search of Sleep offers a refreshingly rational and open-minded antidote to an often irrational discussion.(2001)
Customer Reviews:
The only book on sleep worth reading.......2006-05-18
I've found no other book that offers a truly balanced, evidence-based look at sleep in babies and toddlers. While the author seems to try too hard to be kind to everyone, despite the evidence that shows some practices wanting, she still offers the most science-based look at sleep available. And, thus, the tips are offered within a context that makes them truly valuable to parents.
Close but no cigar.......2003-01-17
I would have given this book a much higher rating if Reichert hadn't folded at the end and advocated Ferber's Cry-It-Out method. For most of the book the author admits to being a loving, nurturing parent. She doesn't let her kids cry; she co-sleeps; she has a lot of attachment parenting behaviors. However, in the interest of not making waves, she opens her arms to the more militant Ferber approach. Sorry, but I can't condone that and I wish she wouldn't have.
Other than that a couple of her chapters are very good--like the ones entitled Temperament, The Generation Gap, and Half a World Away.
This book just ends up saying: Babies are going to wake up; don't fret over it; do whatever you want to deal with it. Man, it could have been a much better book if she had stuck with what she does instead of what she hears about what other people do. (She refers a lot to polls that were taken in cahoots with her magazine, Today's Parent.)
The best book on sleep I've found.......2002-09-07
This is a top-notch guide to solving your baby's sleep problems. I am constantly recommending it to the expectant parents I work with through my doula practice. The book discusses the pros and cons of various sleep-training techniques, explains the science of sleep cycles, debunks common myths about what causes nightwaking, talks about how generational differences can lead to conflicts between parents and grandparents over sleep issues, and offers tips galore for coping if you've got a night-waking baby or toddler. I also like the fact that it refers to Canadian health associations such as Health Canada and the Canadian Paediatric Society. Highly recommended.
A Tough Topic Handled Well.......2002-01-10
The subject of sleep and babies is a very contraversial one. There is a lot of guilt and mthys surrounding it. The author does a wonderful job of educating the reader about what all of the MYTHS are and what the FACTS are. There is very little research that has been done on breastfed babies and sleep as well as co-sleepers. As a doctor and as a new mother I am constantly amazed at how many people are quick to judge what kind of parent you are depending on whether your child is sleeping through the night, as well as what strategies you have employed for "sleep time". The generation gap is huge on this topic and many mothers are left to feel guilty by the choices they have made and have no one to turn to as their mothers just do not understand. Most women will lie to avoid saying their baby spends any time in their bed. This book helps women feel good about the choice they decide to make and gives information in a factual non-judgemental way so that people can make a decision for themselves that suits their temperment as well as their babies. A must for any mother struggling with the sleep issue.
In Search of a Good Sleep Book.......2001-09-18
I have tried all the so called expert sleep books and techniques and always ended up feel either frustrated or incompetent. But In Search of Sleep has made me realize that night waking is not about bad parenting or bratty little kids, but biology and development and culture. It is only a problem if we see it that way.
I love the way this book reframes the sleep issue, and the array of coping strategies the author offers.

Book Description
"In my year in Vietnam, I walked the booby-trapped rice paddies of the Delta, searching for the elusive Viet Cong, and later macheted my way through the triple-canopy jungle, fighting the North Vietnamese Regulars. . . . I sweated, thirsted, hunted, killed. Somewhere in all my experiences, I overlapped the situations of nearly every infantryman and many others who served."
Michael Lee Lanning's journal of his first tour of duty in Vietnam provides an unvarnished daily account of life in the field--the blood, fear, camaraderie, and tedium of combat and maneuver. Fleshed out with narrative and detail years later, the pages of this memorable book, first published in 1987, show an eager young recruit growing before the reader's eyes into a proud but bloodied combat veteran.
Subsequent volumes in his Vietnam Trilogy will detail Lanning's tour as a company commander and his post-war investigation into the mind of the enemy. Through his eyes, readers see the reality of a war that did not always receive glory but was, in his words, "the only war we had."
Customer Reviews:
One of the best books I've ever read.......2007-01-04
I've had these books for more then 20 years now - taking them with me through flood and fire. The first is the first 6 months of his tour and the 2nd is the second 6 months of his tour in Vietnam in 1968-1969.
M. Lee Lanning was the youngest person ever to lead an entire Company of 200 soldiers even though he was only a First Lieutenant, all at the age of 23.
I find these books truly fascinating - they show the horror, the boredom, the friendships made and the attempts at comedy used to stay sane during wartime. I never thought that a "War Memoir" would ever capture my attention, but this did it. Many (if not most) war books are written by the pencil pushers or REMF's and not someone who actually held a rifle and saw the enemy.
Each page is straight from the diary that his father gave him before he shipped out - then what follows is his memory of that day.
One of my favorite excerpts:
"Our move was delayed when one of the FNG's (F-ing New Guy), who had joined Bravo Co. at Crystal (their main base) a few days before, saw something in a clump of bamboo. Seconds later he approached me carrying a heavy, cone-shaped object that I immediately recognized as a 105mm artillery round. From it's shiny exterior, I deduced it was a "dud" from our fire before assaulting the bunkers.
The FNG, proud of his find, had no clue what he was cradling in his arms. As calmly as possible, I told the man to walk back into the jungle for at least 50 meters, gently place the object on the ground and return to my location. The tone of my voice, and the fact that all the others were scrambling for cover, definitely got the troop's attention.
Without a word, he followed my instructions. I braced for the expected explosion as he turned away and slowly walked towards the jungle..."
If you get this make sure you also get "A Company Commanders Journal" that is the second of this series - it contains his journal entries from the second 6 months of his tour.
This Book Is Excellent.......2001-08-28
I missed the Vietnam War by a year or two. I served as an 11B from 72-78. I always wondered what it would have been like to have been there in a rifle company. Plenty of books about SF and LRRPs, but not very many written by a real infantry platoon leader. I never had a tremensous desire to be an elite soldier in an elite unit (if I could have even made it). I only wanted to be a rifle squad leader. This book really made me feel what it would have been like. What I missed. It is a real world book. Not a battle every minute book filled with stories of great exploits. Just a real world grunt in Vietnam book. I highly recommend the companion book Company Commanders Journal.
A disapointing account of Vietnam........1999-07-10
This author misses the mark completely. His account gives none of the day to day feel of the misery and discomfort of living in the field in Vietnam and putting life on the line every day. His recollections are so stale and based on one line journal entrys that they never live up to the promise. I was sorry to see him fall in to the I "I was the best" trap that so many first hand accounts fall into. He clearly wasn't the best, nor was his platoon any better than most. His glee at hearing that a Col who chewed him out for getting too many men blown up in a booby trap had been shot down and seriously injured was, to say the least, morbid! They are too many good first hand accounts available to waste time on this one.
GREAT BOOK!!!.......1999-07-01
This is one of the best books I've ever read, when it comes to documenting the day to day events of a soldier in war. Based on the writer's journal as an Infantry platoon leader, and reinforced with letters sent & kept by the authors wife, this book is both poignant and detailed. From simple remembrances of c-rations and malaria pills, to major battles and the loss of friends, Lanning's book remembers them all, and shares them with the reader.
