GREAT GANG IDENTIFICATION BOOK!.......2001-08-12
Sach's book has been used here at our local high school for the last several years, when one of the city's juvenile probation officer brought it to identify a piece of school graffiti. Bought several copies for the teacher's lounge / library. A welcomed addition! Great illustrations, author knows his gangs. Excellent chapter written just for schools----includes an assessment tool to evaluate gang infiltration within your own school. Would highly recommend for anyone who comes into contact with gangs.

Very Well Researched.......2000-12-28
A very well researched book, by a knowledgeable author. A few things were out of date, but with the fluidity of gangs, turf wars, etc. that can be expected. More books should be available for people to inform themselves, like this one.
MUST READING.......1999-07-26
This book is excellent for any parent, teacher, counselor, law enforcement officer, attorney or corrections officer. I recommend it highly. If you are located in the mid-west this book will be of particular significance. Not only does this book adress the gang problem, it shows drawings and photos of gang symbols, jewelry, attire and the like. Wondering if your kid is a gang member? Read this book! Bravo to my colleague Steve Sachs.
Excellent Resource.......1999-07-11
I found this book to be an excellent resource about gang identification and what society and individuals can do to address the gang problem. Friendly, easy to read format and lots of useful illustrations. Most gang books I've found in libraries are theory, this is a "hands on" publication which reads easily. Books like 8 Ball Chick is good reading to find out WHAT gang members do and how they think. This book is useful to IDENTIFY gang members in the schools and neighborhoods. Also had an interesting section of how to decipher graffiti.

This is a great book! Al Valdez has done an excellent job of summarizes the existing gang information avaliable. It is an easy to read book, that is valuable to law enforcers, educators, students, or interested citizens
Detective Valdez has also included gangs that are generally not covered in other similar books. He writes about occult gangs, and militias.

The Crimean War: 1854-1856 (Essential Histories)
ASIN: 1862272387 |
Book Description
2004 marks the 150th anniversary of the Crimean War and this book covers the events from the complex causes of the war and the declaration of war by Turkey in 1853, through the involvement of Britain and France in 1854 and the war itself including the bloody battles of Alma, Balaclava and Inkermann to the declaration of peace in 1856. Unlike the vast majority of books on the war this story is told from both the Russian and British sides, giving a new and balances perspective on this famous and ill-fated conflict. It is the first ever Anglo-Russian book to be written on the Crimean War. The book contains rare photographs not seen before from Russian archives in Moscow and Simferopol. It has detailed accounts of the major battles such as Alma, Inkermann Balaclava and Tchernaya. The book also features modern battlefields photographs.
Customer Reviews:
A frustrating read...........2004-11-04
I picked up my copy of this weighty book with a great deal of expectation. I have always held an interest in the mid-19th century including the great conflicts of the Crimean War and the American Civil War. I hoped this work would provide a definitive history.
Undoubtedly well researched, the book makes good use of Russian sources to illustrate the experiences of the defenders of Sevastapol. Political entanglements that led to the war and ultimately dictated its peace are thoroughly detailed and discussed.
Nevertheless, for all its careful research, I found this book frustrating to read. The book manifests a number of problems that a good editor should have dealt with long before publication. Words are repeated in the same sentence, quotes and illustrative statments stand isolated in blocks of text without further explanation and anecdotal material is often awkwardly placed. The syntax is especially poor. An example from Chapter 4 -
"It was a scene superbly captured in the 1968 feature film, "The Charge of Light Brigade", which captured the spirit of the march - and its agonies - superbly."
Mistakes such as these would be frowned upon in an undergraduate paper. Far too many of them litter the book and detract from the narrative, making the work a difficult read.
The academic standard of the work is high and the use of Russian sources most welcome. With careful editing and closer proof reading this book could yet become the definitive work it aspires to be, and this makes it all the more frustrating to read in its present form.
If you are looking for academic study of the Crimean War, this book provides it. However, if you also enjoy a good read, you may lose paitience with this book before the end.
A well researched and authentic account........2004-08-30
Oh what images the Crimean War evokes and has evoked for 150 years. For myself, with scant knowledge of specific events, I well remember visiting the Officers Mess of the Royal Regiment of Wales some years ago where I stood for over an hour ignoring my hosts just gazing at the detail of the most outstanding piece of regimental silverware I have ever seen. Made of solid silver, the piece must have measured at least 3 feet by 2 feet and easily over 1 foot high. It depicted in full relief the Battle of Inkerman and showed those attacking and those defending that strategic hill. It was simply called "The Inkerman Piece."
Elsewhere, those with a far greater knowledge of the Crimean War have acclaimed this book as a great work. Of course, only those who have studied the subject in great detail can vouch for the accuracy of the content. Personally, I have taken note of the fact that the Bibliography alone runs to 7 pages and have also taken a close look at the authors and the qualifications and background they bring to the work. In this case it is very impressive.
Ian Fletcher was born in London in 1957 and comes to this work as the author of 17 books and editor of several more. His list of credits is impressive by any standards; Member of the British Commission for Military History, Fellow of the International Napoleonic Society, he also runs battlefield tours specialising in pre-20th century military history and is often found escorting clients to the Iberian Peninsular, Waterloo and the Crimea.
Natalia Ishchenko's credits are equally impressive; Born in the Crimea, she graduated from Taurida National V. I. Vernadsky University and obtained he PhD in Philology in 1989. Today she is an assistant professor at her old university and author of over 40 works encompassing literary, historical and cultural studies.
In short, these two people know their subject and have formed the perfect partnership for producing such a book. On top of all that - and in spite of the passing of 150 years since the Crimean War, the book is described by the no less a person than the Prime Minister of the present day Crimean republic as "The first accomplished mutual investigation of the events of the Crimean War of 1853-1856."
I do believe, therefore, this book will come to be seen as a great literary work - in addition to being a damned good read. It should, therefore, be seen as required reading for all those with an interest in the Crimean War in addition to anyone else who enjoys a fine read on a factual subject.

Product Description
Self-organization constitutes one of the most important theoretical debates in contemporary life sciences. The present book explores the relevance of the concept of self-organization and its impact on such scientific fields as: immunology, neurosciences, ecology and theories of evolution. Historical aspects of the issue are also broached. Intuitions relative to self-organization can be found in the works of such key western philosophical figures as Aristotle, Leibniz and Kant. Interacting with more recent authors and cybernetics, self-organization represents a notion in keeping with the modern world's discovery of radical complexity. The themes of teleology and emergence are analyzed by philosophers of sciences with regards to the issues of modelization and scientific explanation. The implications of self-organization for life sciences are here approached from an interdisciplinary angle, revealing the notion as already rewarding and full of promise for the future.

Book Description
This is a highly readable, challenging and incisive collection of essays, exploring different ways of knowing the rural world; of understanding the countryside. The essays suggest that we must go beyond cultural constructions of rural idyll and their accompanying political, cultural and theoretical orthodoxies, which risk both "purification" of transgressive presences and practices, and ignorance of significant agency and performance.
This book re-views the countryside as heterogeneous, dynamic and often dystopic. It is an authoritative and engaging collection, emphasizing that rural areas are not just known differently, they are also performed differently. This book can be read as a running debate, as a series of glimpses into the nature of rural areas, each carrying a different understanding of what can be known, and what should be known. Essayists explore the different ways in which rural areas are: Represented and idealized; Known and understood through practice and performance; Envisioned as theoretical and political arenas
It begs questions about how to read, analyzed and write about the country; about how the countryside works for its actors; and how it might work better in the future.
Paul Cloke is Professor of Geography at Bristol University, and Founder Editor of Journal of Rural Studies.

Book Description
Well before the current age of discourse, deconstruction, and multiculturalism, Richard McKeon propounded a philosophy of pluralism showing how "facts" and "values" are dependent on diverse ways of reading texts. This book is a transcription of an entire course, including both lectures and student discussions, taught by McKeon. As such, it provides an exciting introduction to McKeon's conception of pluralism, a central aspect of neo-Pragmatism, while demonstrating how pluralism works in a classroom setting.
In his lectures, McKeon outlines the entire history of Western thinking on the sciences. Treating the central concepts of motion, space, time, and cause, he traces modern intellectual debates back to the ancient Greeks, notably Plato, Aristotle, Democritus, and the Sophists. As he brings the story of Western science up to the twentieth century, he uses his fabled semantic schema (reproduced here for the first time) to uncover new ideas and observations about cosmology, mechanics, dynamics, and other aspects of physical science.
Illustrating the broad historical sweep of the lectures are a series of discussions which give detail to the course's intellectual framework. These discussions of Plato, Aristotle, Galileo, Newton, and Maxwell are perhaps the first published rendition of a philosopher in literal dialogue with his students. Led by McKeon's pointed questioning, the discussions reveal the difficulties and possibilities of learning to engage in serious intellectual communication.

Book Description
Self-Organizing Natural Intelligence brings new scientific methods to intelligence research that is currently under the influence of largely classical 19
th century single causal theory and method. This out-dated classical approach has resulted in the single-capacity g-theory, a "central processor," top-down, genetically determined linguistic view of intelligence that is directly contradicted by empirical facts of human and animal studies of intelligence.
This book proposes, utilizes, and demonstrates the research superiority of a highly developed multidisciplinary theory models approach to intelligence. With conceptual tools, concepts and mathematical methods more suited to continuous, dynamic phenomena of living things, the entire scope of natural intelligence based upon empirical studies of actual human and animal experience is addressed. Results show that human and animal intelligence is largely self-organizing and emergent across a spectrum of major categories of kinds of natural intelligence, not limited to a single "top down" capacity as current proponents of the single-capacity g-theory and IQ approach support.
Contrary to the single-capacity verbal theory of intelligence, this work argues and shows evidence for three major categories of natural intelligence. Overwhelming empirical evidence is given to show that our understanding of cognition itself must be broadened to include nonverbal immediate awareness as a category of natural intelligence that is embedded within sensory and somatosensory-motor processes that make possible yet another category of intelligence, knowing how.
While most current theories of intelligence assume that the mind is entirely computational, and also assume that sensation is cognitively "neutral," having no intentionality, here empirical evidence is presented from numerous clinical studies showing that certain primitive sensory processes are not cognitively neutral, nor do they require a representational language interface in order to be accessible to cognitive (intelligence) processes.
This volume describes a rigorous treatment and exhaustive classification of natural intelligence while also demonstrating a more adequate scientific and mathematical approach than current statistical and psychometric approaches shoring up the out-dated and misused IQ hypothetical construct.
