Great Reference.......2007-10-11
I am a self taught seamstress and I love this book to use as a reference manual. It is comprehensive but easy to understand. This book would be good for a beginner Great Book.
Sewing for beginners.......2007-09-21
It has been a number of years since I sat down at a sewing machine. I definitely needed this extra help to get me reacquainted with using my sewing machine as well as sewing a outfit.
Use with Prudence.......2007-06-18
No book on the how-to of sewing will make anyone a sewer. Still, this work is one one to have perched close to the sewing machine. That is, it's a good reference work for the active seamtress who has questions on technique.
Half-way through the book is some glossy photography displaying the end results of "patternless sewing" -- kiminos, skirts, sleveless tops, ponchos, and tote bags. Ideally, as Ms. Soto states, these projects, and their detailed instructions, are for those polishing rusting sewing skills. Indeed, it would be a daunting task, for any sewer to do the measuring and cutting directly on the fabric. For anyone trying this patternless sewing, take the time to make a paper pattern from the measurements presented in the book!
Good for all beginning and refreshing skills.......2007-06-02
I purchased this book and have been using it like crazy. I used to sew many years ago, it it is refreshing my memory on many ways and tips. I have the spiral edition and love how it just stays open to the page I need. It covers many different things and ways to do your sewing. I would highly recommend this book to anyone!
an ok reference book.......2007-02-03
It's a good reference for basic techniques but it is lacking in more detailed information on techniques that I was interested in. I do 95% of my sewing by hand and was a little disappointed to find that they only provide machine instruction for buttonholes. The book suggests, if you are unsuccessful in making the buttonholes yourself, to have your machine looked at (in case it's the problem) or to have someone else make them for you (the book even states, "most of your sewing will be done at the machine"). For hooks and eyes they recommend tacking them on, that's it. Depending on where you are placing them you may need to do more than just tack them in place or they are likely to work loose and fall off. The book also suggests, for hand sewing, that you use a length of thread no more than 18" to prevent tangling. I use a strand two arm-lengths. There is a simple way to manage long lengths of thread, it's effective in reducing the amount of tangling. The book also recommends, for hand sewing to draw the thread through beeswax. It's my understanding that if you get too much wax on the thread it can stain your project. In the middle of the book they have full color photos of projects you can make, though projects are at the end of the book (before the index). I would have preferred that those pages were at the back with the actual projects. I've torn them out as I felt they were an annoyance.
I think it's an otherwise book "basic" book.

Covers the basics..........2005-09-26
I really like this book - granted, I wouldn't duplicate the exact styles in the book (it screams 1980s), but I know what styles I like, I just needed some guidance on how to make what I wanted to make. This book covers everything - window coverings, bed linens, etc. My only complaint is that sometimes the directions are SO simplified that it almost makes them confusing. But overall it was a great purchase. Also, I almost bought this book at a craft store close by, but ended up buying it on Amazon...with standard shipping it came two days later and was less expensive than the one at the craft store.
Excellent How-To Book.......2005-07-16
If you are interested in making your own home fabrics, this is a great resource. This book shows you step-by-step how to make no-sewing and simple sewing projects to personalize your home (and save money to boot!). This is not an interior decorating book; rather, it is a manual for people who want to spruce up their homes but need to know HOW. I didn't see any outdated information here - some of the styles were more "country" than others, but there is plenty here from other design styles to keep you busy. Also, you can tailor the majority of the ideas in this book to your tastes. All in all, a fantastic guide to sewing projects for the home.
Look at the design not the fabric!.......2002-10-21
When I got this book, I immediately noticed the value of the information offered. It has tons of details from fabric choices to what kind of tools to purchase. In the back it even offers "time saving" features which gives you ideas to use fabric in different ways from walls to glueing seams together to save time on sewing. The book places a lot of emphasis on certain things that beginners NEED to know. I am a beginner and have poured over tons of other books and nothing compares to this book in terms of teaching you how to do different techniques. Certainly, the fabric choices in this book are outdated, but use your imagination! You don't have to purchase the same fabric or color choices in this book. Purchase your own and use the outlines offered in this book. Even add your own. A great book to start with. Highly recommended!
Simplicity's Simply the Best Home Decorating Book.......2002-08-01
I think that this book is fantastic. It covers so many different home decorating projects, with very clear easy to follow instructions. It's a great addition to any home sewing reference library.
Not a good buy.......2002-02-27
I'm sorry I bought this book. Opening it was like walking back in time. I did not know how old it was until I had already bought the book. The how-to is OK but the decorating ideas (styles, colors) are old and dated.

Simplicity's Sewing Instruction Book.......2007-03-22
This book offers detailed instructions, with clear & helpful illustrations, of the many methods of sewing. Everything from how to read a pattern, determine your true size, tips on getting the optimal fit, and techniques of both machine & serger sewing are covered. Just what I needed. After reviewing information I thought I already knew, I realized why my projects have not always turned out perfectly. A great guide book for beginner and experienced sewers. My only dissapointment was that I received the issue from the 1980's, so all the wardrobe ideas & patterns/ illustrations reflect the fads of that time, including the "big hair." Other than being a bit dated, the sewing instruction was great.
Book Description
This fast-moving memoir of T. Moffatt Burriss shows his extraordinary role as a platoon leader and company commander with the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment in Europe and North Africa during World War II. He saw a great deal of combat on Sicily, at Salerno, on Anzio Beach, in Holland during Operation Market Garden, and during the drive into Germany. This book portrays World War II as seen vividly through the eyes of the young American citizen-soldier.
Customer Reviews:
Strike and Hold-Excellent Memoir By an excellant Citizen.......2005-03-27
This is an outstanding memoir written by a true citizen soldier concerning his involvement in the 82nd PIR during WWII. The prose is straight to the point and gives a first hand account of the battles of Anzio, Market Garden, and the Bulge. The description of the crossing of the Waal River is outstanding . Any WWII buff wil enjoy this book. It shows again why Mr. Burriss and his generation are truly the greatest.
"ALL THE WAY".......2004-01-30
This book is about the missions of the 82d though out Operation Market Garden and other battles of the war. It follows a Plt. Leader, Burris on his accounts. The book had a very different feel than other war books. Burris gives accounts that he remembers and he also gives accounts of what other parratoopers saw, giving a true and honest approach. The book covers a small part of Operation Market, remember it is just following a plt. leader and his men.
The letters he puts in the book shed a new light on things. I like the fact that the letters where not cut down and where printed in their true form.
I liked the book very much and have great respect for Mr. Burris. The book is very easy to read it is not full of all that military jargon like other books.
Quick Read, not much information.......2003-05-26
This book is a nice quick read for those looking for a glimpse at what airborne operations were like in World War Two from the point of view of small units. This book lacks adequate maps and information, and sources to be taken seriously as a piece of historical literature. Most of the book's theme seems to be that the British weren't aggressive enough and that they really messed up the Waal River crossing. Almost half of the book is memoirs, in the form of statements from other soldiers in the 504th, none of whom we know or how they relate to the author's experience. There are spelling and grammar mistakes throughout the book and the author contradicts himself several times. The part of the book that becomes really interesting is when the author starts to give his opinion of strategic decisions that were made six or seven ranks above his head. This is a nice book as a memoir by a man who felt the need to put his experiences down on paper, but it is not a good book from a literary or historical viewpoint.
A great combat history of the 3rd Bn. 504th.......2002-01-13
This is a no frills history of the Third Battalion 504th. Written by a contributor to Cornelius Ryan's "A Bridge Too Far". T. Moffatt Burriss took part in every major campaign the 504th was in from Sicily,Salerno,Volturno River,Anzio,Holland,Belgium and finally Germany. If you are interested in the history of one of the premier battalions in one of the best airborne regiments in WWII I recommend this book. This is a nice tribute to "Those Devils in Baggy Pants".
A Warrior from the Greatest Generation.......2002-01-02
In his personal memoir, Strike and Hold, L. Moffatt Burriss relates an account of his World War II experiences as a platoon leader, then company commander in the 504th PIR of the 82nd AD. After a brief introduction describing his training and shipment oversees, Capt. Burriss describes three important engagements, which he participated in. The first was a drop into Sicily, the second was the struggle to maintain the beachhead at Anzio, and the third was the drop into Grave, Holland as part of the Market-Garden operation. Of the three, the operation at Grave, the crossing of the Waal River, and the subsequent capture of the Nijmegen bridge strikes me as the most traumatic of Burriss' combat experiences. The Waal crossing and attack were sheer hell and Burriss' account describes it in agonizing detail. Especially distressing to this reader was the account of the stalled British armored column, under General Horrocks. As their paratrooper comrades were being slaughtered at Arnhem, Captain Carrington (subsequently Lord Carrington) was brewing tea and waiting for orders to advance. This after the 504th had fought and died to gain the bridgehead to allow the Brits to advance.
Capt. Burriss was also present at Cheneux, Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge. Unfortunately for this reviewer, he says little about it. The reason is unknown. Either he had little recollection of the event, or there wasn't a great deal to tell. In any case, Capt. Burriss has written a moving and poignant remembrance of the Second World War, and his reasons for fighting the war, and his speculation on whether today's generation could make such a sacrifice make this book a "should read" for any reader interested in why we fought.

The Reign of Charles V (European History in Perspective)
ASIN: 0300085273 |
Book Description
By virtually all standards, including his own, Emperor Maximilian II (1527-1576) was a failure. His challenges were many, his achievements few. So Paula Sutter Fichtner begins the introduction to this book, the first full biography in English of Maximilian. The Habsburg leader, though gifted, was never able to drive the Turks from Hungary, rationalize his government, or reunite Christendom or even its German components. By bringing the failures of Maximilian's reign into clear focus, Fichtner illuminates the abilities and qualities of this complex man as well as the weaknesses of the expanded Habsburg empire and the problems of ruling in an age of confessional turmoil. Fichtner examines the dynamics of military, institutional, cultural, and family affairs in the early modern Habsburg empire and considers the reasons why Maximilian was unable to shape them to his own purposes. She describes a man of tolerant disposition who allowed Protestants free exercise of their religion yet struggled both publicly and privately with the difficult religious currents of his time. From her extensive research in the primary sources, she provides a fresh portrait of Maximilian, his role in Reformation history, and his era of war, religious division, political conflict, and administrative stress.
Customer Reviews:
A Rather Tragic Figure.......2004-01-19
As Professor Fichtner shows, Maximilian was not only an unsuccessful leader, but a repeat loser on many fronts: war with Turkey, religious issues, administration and fiscal policy . . . the list goes on. While not written for the popular market this work does manage to hit all the main features of Maximilian's career, and ends, poignantly, with a meditation on the psychological effects of failure.

Book Description
The Quest for Compromise is an interdisciplinary study of an imperial court in late-sixteenth-century Vienna, and a detailed examination of a fascinating moment of religious moderation. It investigates the rise and fall of an irenic movement through four individuals: an Italian artist (Jacopo Strada), a Silesian physician (Johannis Crato), a Dutch librarian (Hugo Blotius) and a German soldier (Lazarus von Schwendi), who sought peace and accommodation through a wide range of cultural, intellectual and political activity.

Book Description
This advanced graduate level monograph is the first to present a wide variety of critical point theorems in a unified framework. The author not only employs Morse theory as a tool to study multiple solutions to differential equations arising in the calculus of variations, but covers a broad range of applications to semilinear elliptic PDE, to dynamical systems and symplectic geometry, and to geometry of harmonic maps and minimal surfaces. Critical groups for isolated critical points or orbits - which provide more information than the Leray-Schauder index - are introduced.
Topics covered include basic Morse theory and its various extensions, minimax principles in Morse theory, and applications of semilinear boundary value problems, periodic solutions of Hamiltonian systems, and harmonic maps. In a self-contained appendix, the author presents Witten's proof of Morse inequalities.
Containing several new results, this volume will be attractive and germaine to researchers and graduate students working in nonlinear analysis, nonlinear functional analysis, partial differential equations, ordinary differential equations, differential geometry, and topology.
For research mathematicians, physicists and graduate students.
