Stacy DeBroff offers hope and help for parents with a child whose schedule resembles a Stanley Kaplan cram course. Sign Me Up offers a sane alternative, urging parents to use extracurricular activities to find a child's "sweet spot--and unlock their true potential." Her first step is nailing parent peer pressure. As she explains,"the question what do you do for work? has been replaced by asking what activities does your child do?" DeBroff offers wise counsel for holding your ground and choosing activities to help your child develop and mature, rather than packaging them for college applications. She establishes a balance between the goals of activity (discipline, self-discovery) and the value of downtime (spontaneity, self-motivation). Her advice features quotes from parents and coaches, and focuses on the details of hundreds of family friendly choices including lacrosse, chess, ballet, archery, drumming, and cartooning. Each activity is explored in terms of time, cost, competition and fit with a child's temperament and skills. Debroff also includes smart ideas about thorny issues such as how to be a spectator and what to do when your child wants to quit. This excellent book would have been strengthened with more details about volunteering and community activities outside of scouting. If after-school activity is about enriching maturity, DeBroff might encourage parents to sign up their children to help repair the world. --Barbara Mackoff

A parent's bible for building a healthy activity schedule fo.......2004-06-29
In today's busy world, how do parents know when they should cut back on their child's extra-curricular activities? Not wanting to disappoint their children, many parents sign them up for more activities than they can handle. How can parents choose which activities are best suited for their children, and how can they find out more about each one?
The book, "Sign Me Up!" by Stacy DeBroff, is a wonderful place for parents to begin familiarizing themselves with all the programs that exist today. This book is more than a guide -- it's a bible! Parents should refer to this book often before making a decision to sign their children up for any activity. From this book readers will learn what an activity is about, what costs are usually involved, what to look for in a good coach or teacher, and many more answers to other important questions.
MyParenTime.com highly recommends this book -- parents will feel like they are getting advice from a good friend...important advice that will enable them to set up a healthy activity schedule for their children.
Super guide for all moms with more than one kid.......2003-07-17
This book is a marvelous reference for any parent who is going through the activity/sports craze with their children. As a teacher and a parent of two boys I am well aware of the increased amount of activities and sports kids are getting involved with at a young age. With my boys, I have gone through the sign up process, only to find my house filled with moans and complaints when practices and game days come along. Not only is this book a helpful reference to finding out more about specific sports and activities, but it has useful information about dealing with kids wanting to quit and positive ways to get to the bottom of it. This book has been a great help to me in dealing with both my sons, finding out what they like best, and what I can expect as a parent.
Helps you know what you're getting yourself in to!.......2003-07-17
Sign Me Up! is a great guide for parents for looking to find out more about after-school sports and activities. As a mother of three it is not always easy to balance everyoneýs schedules. My 10 year old daughter as already joined two different sports and quit because the physical demands where too much for her, and she was clearly not having fun. With her I have realized she needs more one on one time, and I have been looking for sports and activities that could offer her this. This kind of information is exactly what I have been finding in Sign Me Up! Not only do I feel like I know more about what each sport and activity will entail, but I can tell my kids more about what they can expect and help them make their decision before signing up. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone! Itýs wonderful for parents with kids of all ages!
Great Resource! Makes life easier for busy moms.......2003-07-17
What a wonderful resource! I'm a mother of 9 year old twin boys, and I've had a hard time figuring out good sports and activities for them to join, and which ones to avoid. I feel like everyday the boys come home with a different sport they want to join and it's so hard to pick. This book was a GREAT way to help us all figure out what would be the best for them to do. It's so easy to use and so easy to find what you are looking for right away. It has outlined notes and information about each sport that is extremely helpful in selecting the right sport for your kids. Both my boys are in baseball, but one of my sons has talked a lot lately about karate. After reading the section on Karate I talked to him about it, so he would know more about what to expect. Overall, I think this book is a helpful tool for parents to have, and I am sure I will use it over and over again in the next few years as the boys try out new activities and sports.

A Courageous Japanese Journalist Tells The Truth About Japan's 1937 Crimes Against Humanity.......2007-08-31
In Japan Honda Katsuichi has been revered as among his country's finest journalists in print media. But sadly, his excellent journalism pertaining to the horrific acts committed by Imperial Japanese military forces against helpless Chinese prisoners of war and civilians during the three month-long campaign in late 1937 and early 1938 that led to the fall of Nanking (Nanjing) - then the Republic of China's capital - has been ignored or harshly criticized (or both) by his fellow Japanese, who still cling stubbornly to the historical fiction that they too, were victims, because of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (I have a question for those Japanese - including several previous Amazon.com reviewers who've demonstrated that they are delusional - who still deny the great, wanton crimes against humanity inflicted upon Asians, Americans and Europeans by the Empire of Japan in its ruthless attempt to create a "Great East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere" in the 1930s and 1940s. Why do you think the United States felt compelled to use the atom bomb against Japan? Could one of the reasons be the savage, genocidal war which Japan's military forces waged against the Chinese from 1937 to 1945? In stark contrast, Germany, Austria, and Italy have atoned for their crimes against humanity. When will Japan's elected government make the same admission?).
Honda Katsuichi's "The Nanjing Massacre" isn't an easy book to read, since it is replete with many eyewitness accounts, by Chinese survivors whom Honda interviewed personally in the 1970s and 1980s, that provide clear, compelling evidence of countless acts of genocide by Japanese military forces against the Chinese, and especially, brutal treatment of civilians, including, most infamously, raping adult women and girls, and sexual molestation such as stabbing them in their vaginas with bayonets and swords. It is a better, far more accurate, book than Iris Chang's justly celebrated "The Rape of Nanking", since it shows that Japanese acts of genocidal brutality did not begin with the fall of Nanking in mid December, 1937, but instead, started as soon as Japanese troops waded ashore at Hangzhou Bay, more than a month before. This American edition also includes excerpts from previous and more recent books written by Honda on Japanese military atrocities during the campaign to take Nanking, as well as revealing excerpts from the diaries of Japanese soldiers who were guilty of committing these crimes. If nothing else, Honda's books ought to be required reading in Japanese classrooms, and the English translation of this book may one day compel the Japanese government to atone for the genocidal actions of its military forces - most notably the Imperial Japanese Army - in the 1930s and 1940s.
japanese= devil race.......2006-03-31
Japan has committed some of the world's worst atrocities in history (nanking massacre, unit 731, batton death march, comfort women, pearl harbor, ect..) and they still refuse to apologize, compensate, or make an accurate history in there textbooks. Why is Japan so cowardly and instead try to make their amends to their victims of the horrible crimes against humanity. No wonder people call Japan a "devil" race.
Putting things into perspective.......2006-01-23
In response to the reviewer below, I must say that it isn't true that 99.9% of the Japanese do not know about the "rape of Nanjing," or that Japan has not apologized at all. We do know it and it's in our history textbooks as well, granted that we are not taught that part of history as much in detail as those in China or Korea. The Japanese government has also apologized on numerous occasions, the question of their sincerity aside. Partly abetted by the nationalist trend that is currently on the rise in Japan, a handful of historians are attempting to rewrite the history; however, it is absolutely wrong that the whole nation is completely ignorant of the matter. Any attempt to appeal to sensationalism or fervent patriotism just adds fuel to the fire.
As for the book in question, this is a pretty good traversal of the matter, though some call into question the impartiality of the evidence employed.
Japanese does not apologize at all!.......2005-06-12
I have to tell you that I am Korean and as people know we hate Japanese! Japan still state that the Japanese have not killed any Korean and Chinese and 99.99% of the population does not know anything about the horrible torture they did on Korea and China! Also, the Japanese states that Dokdo is their land when it has been owned by Korea for more than 6 centuries! So stop pretending to be apologizing Japan! You guys did that 5 times already! We won't get fooled agaiN!
Detractors Blinded by Hate.......2005-03-03
This is one of several books detailing the atrocities Japan committed in China during WWII, atrocities the Japanese and their government have yet to face up to in a mature and honest manner. I suppose, for Japan, it's a matter of losing face, and if that's so, Japan has a lot face to lose. Those who deny the Nanjing butchery are so blinded by their hate of communism that any truth exposed by anyone who even minutely appears to support China's view is instantly shrugged off as a lie(s). The bottom line is, the Nanjing Massacre and other Japanese atrocities are about as untrue as the existence of the Comfort Women (Chinese and Korean women kidnapped by Japanese soldiers so as to whore themelves among the Japanese military), and the Bataan Death March where so many American and British military and civilians were murdered along the long walk to Japanese POW camps, none of which Japan has yet to come to terms with either. In fact, the Japanese government even refuses to discuss the Comfort Women.
Those who deny Japan's responsibilty are the same kind we in the west refer to as revisionists when they say the Holocaust never happened. They're not revisionsists; they're liars. A few of the reviews of this book are so full of philosophical and political claptrap that it reminds one of a cheap hamburger loaded with filler. Unfortunatley, the burger is so full of God-knows-what that instead of pleasing the customer with its juicy full rounded appearance, one distasteful bite and you instantly realize you're about to throw up.

Birds of East Africa Princeton Field Guide.......2007-09-20
At Last a concise well illustrated easy to manage field guide for bird watchers travelling to East Africa. Previous reviews although excellent are to heavy and bulky for international travellers with serious weight limitations on the luggage they are allowed.
The illustations are excellent and there is adequate factual information and good maps to accompany them.
Birds of East Africa book.......2007-07-03
This is a great book of African birds. Excellent plate pictures. Makes it very easy to identify. Book in excellent condition and received it as expected. Definitely would order from this seller again. Thanks.
Birds of east afrika.......2007-02-12
I was three weeks in Ethiopia and I took 1500 pgotos of Ethiopian birds during my trip. This book gave a magnificant basis for identifying and clssifying my material. Pictures are good, with good details and colours. I sincerally recommend this book to everybody who are interested in bird watching in East-Africa.
a must for the birder.......2007-01-17
everywhere you go in east africa you see birds. if you like them- you better be prepared for the trip! i got the guide a month before, and tried to get as familiar as possible with the birds before arriving to tanzania.
when we went on safari our guide pulled out his worn and faded zimmerman- the descriptions on one part, the illustrations on another and the distribution maps at the end. when i pulled my guide and gave him a try- he was very attached to his zimmerman but had to admit that the stevenson is indeed a worthy companion, with all the info about a species is on the same page...
compared to my european guide it is heavy and big- but the european contains only about 750 spp, while this one has more than 1200!
the illustrations are bright and clear.
i used it during my 30 day trip to tanzania and got more than 200 positive identifications, so i must go again to get the rest...
recommended!
Have guide book, will travel.......2006-11-05
This guide has the best illustrations of the 20+ bird guides I own. If any book can make the problem of learning and distinguishing the roughly 1400 species in the region - Uganda, Kenya, Tanganika, Rwanda, Burundi - possible, this book is the one. A little heavy for the field, but contains only the essential material: species accounts and range maps on the left page, illustrations on the right. Even after some study I will still have to refer to the guide to identify which of the 38 species of Cisticola I am looking at, but with this guide the chances are very good.

Book Description
This book breaks new ground: it is the first complete listing and guide to all the known reptiles of the five East African countries (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi.) Written by expert East African herpetologists, it incorporates virtually all known information on the East African reptile fauna. Nearly 500 high-quality color photographs illustrate most of the species involved, many of which have never been illustrated in color before. Keys and introductory essays are included for all orders, families, genera, and species, giving clear introductions for every group. There is an individual account for each species, describing its appearance, habits, and habitat, accompanied by a map showing its known distribution within East Africa and notes indicating its Africa-wide distribution as well. Hence this book will be useful not only in East Africa, but in the surrounding countries as well, for which no reptile guides exist. In addition, the descriptions of dangerous snakes include a section on their venom. A comprehensive appendix discusses aspects of snakebite risk and treatment in East Africa and the do's and don'ts of first aid.
Key Features:
- Illustrates nearly all of the c. 420 species found in East Africa
- Contains keys and full descriptions to aid identification
- Contains a distribution map for every species
- Provides information on snakebite and effective first aid

This is the most perfect book for any snake or reptile fan.
More an Encyclopedia than a Field Guide.......2004-06-17
This book is amazingly detailed, giving in-depth information on ALL species of reptile known to occur in the five countries covered.
The photographs are of excellent quality (though where none was available, drawings would have been better than nothing) and the keys very user-friendly.
It is an absolute must for anyone interested in the herpetofauna of this region.
A word of warning though: despite the title this book is much too bulky and heavy to carry around on the field!
More likely, you will want to keep it at home (or in your car?) as a reference.
Wow!.......2004-04-07
This is a remarkable collection of information on a sorely needed region of herpetology. Not just for advanced hobbyists either...this book has WONDERFUL photographs and is a MUST have for any level of reptile enthusiast.
