What if it hadn't rained at Agincourt in 1415 and the French had, as expected, won the day? What if one of Napoleon's most trusted commanders had spiked Wellington's guns with a handful of nails at Waterloo in 1815, providing his emperor with victory? What if Hitler hadn't paused for three vital days during his invasion of France in May 1940, allowing the British Expeditionary Force precious time to evacuate from Dunkirk? Moments like these, argues Erik Durschmied, provide the hinge factor in history: examples of stupidity, chance, or accident that have irrevocably changed the outcome of human history, for better or worse.
Drawing on his extensive experience as a war correspondent with the BBC and CBS, Durschmied moves from ancient Troy and the Trojan Horse to Iraq and Operation Desert Storm, offering a persuasive and at times wry account of the ways in which chance affects the unfolding of history. Recounting 17 key moments in human conflict and warfare, The Hinge Factor is not just an amusing meditation on what might have been; it is also a poignant and vivid account of the brutality and stupidity of war. More than just an account of accidents in history, this is a thoughtful and absorbing book. --Jerry Brotton, Amazon.co.uk
Book Description
From the wooden horse at Troy to a dropped package of cigars at Antietam to a photograph snapped in Vietnam, world history has been shaped as much by chance and error as by courage and heroism. Military conflicts are often decided by a caprice of weather, coincidence, or incompetence - in short, by the unpredictable hinge factor. Durschmied takes us through history's major battles and, in a series of gripping narratives, recreates the events that defined their outcomes. Drawing from historical accounts and personal documents, Durschmied gives us a fascinating look at how the unexpected and the bizarre have dictated world events.

A Great Read.......2007-09-18
This book describes famous battles and the incidents, decisions, and unforseen factors that served as the catalyst for victory or defeat. It's easy to extrapolate from lessons learned the hard way and apply these to our lives. Essentially, if one lives, plans, and executes with integrity, "victory" is more likely, but not always, as this book amply demonstrates. There is a fly on the wall quality to the descriptions of the pivotal moments of these famous battles. The author seems to have special insight into the time periods he's describing which give a real sense how life was lived in those days. If you're at all interested in history, philosophy, or irony, I highly reccommend this book. I'm surprised that this didn't get more 5 star review given all the positive comments by the various reviewers.
Creative, interesting, but apparently written in haste.......2006-04-17
A friend of mine told me about the premise of this book: that the outcome of many (even important) battles throughout history has been defined not by the military brilliance of the winners, but by the human weakness of the losers or just by luck.
I was intrigued by it, and read it (that is to say, I am not an specialist versed on military or history readings - you can see that if you click on my "other reviews").
I will be brief. What I liked about this book was:
- Nice set of chronologically ordered events, starting from Troy and finishing with the fall of the Berlin wall.
- The premise seems to be correct in most of the examples provided: yes, human beings are weak and, well, human. So, many battles were lost by arrogance, by abrupt changes in weather conditions, by miscommunication, etc.
The issues that bothered me whilst reading it were:
- Convoluted story-telling. The description of some battles was very difficult to follow. Sometimes I read them once, twice, could not fully understand the movements of the players, and at the end, just quit and kept going, following the major points but missing in some of the details that Mr. Durschmeid failed (imho) to convey appropriately.
- Horrible use of footnotes. I won't get into details here, but let's just say it's not clear to me who was thinking what about the footnotes in this book. Some are iterative, some could be in the text, some are inocuous references, some are translations and some are pretty much incomprehensible.
- Translations: in many instances Durschmeid failed to translate quotes from French or German military officers. So, his point was completely lost.
- Maps: yes, it is very convenient to use maps to help the readers understand the movement of troops in the battles; but, no, it is not wise to use a poorly designed and schematized map for each battle. Their value was many times diminished.
The four issues above seem like details, but their comeuppance again and again in this book make me feel as if was written in haste. I don't understand what was the rush, but clearly someone could have helped Mr. Durschmeid in making it more intelligible, more sharp, more thorough.
Read this if you're curious about the role of stupidity in warfare. It opens your eyes. In some occassions you may even laugh at what happened.
But, unless you're a scholar, or have the patience to read and re-read some paragraphs, you might feel dissappointed by the lack of quality in the book's form (not its content, which is fine).
Short essays on popular military history.......2006-01-28
This is actually a fun book to read. It contains 17 short essays, none much longer than 20 pages, on military battles and the chance events that contributed to the final outcomes.
The essays cover a range of wars starting with the Trojan war and ending with the Gulf War of 1991. I especially enjoyed reading about how the heavy armor of the French knights contributed to their fall at Agincourt against Henry V. The description of Waterloo was well done, where maneuvers were traded tactically back and forth for advantage between the French and the English and Prussian troops. General McClellan comes off looking terrible in the essay on Antietam but this is nothing compared to the incompetence of the English officers at the battle of Balaclava where the famous Light Brigade was destroyed by Russian forces.
The essays are short but they lack depth. They are popular introductions rather than scholarly reference products. You should read this book for fun, but you should read more about each battle if you are really interested in the historic facts. The hinge factors are relatively weak. These battles were won or lost based on a multifactored interaction of influences. Weather and accidents no doubt to sway events to some extent but Durschmeid may put too much emphasis on mud's influence on warfare and the outcome of massive battles. Weather is a favorite hinge factor in these chapters, yet weather impacts both sides of a battle. It is the adaptation of leadership to the weather conditions that tends to make the difference.
Not for scholars but absolutely fascinating.......2006-01-25
Mr Durschmied has written a fascinating book where the battles recounted are so vividly described that you can't put the book down. He is a gifted writer and the historical cases he has chosen are well balanced and representative of the various ages of military history. Although this book is not to be used as a reference or scholarly work, it is fantastic for firing the readers'interest about some not so well known historical periods and the methods of fighting.
Very good.......2005-09-07
I liked this book quite a bit. Instead of dry and monotone descriptions of the events that so often spoil military history author manages to describe battles so vividly that you can almost picture yourself being there. However, as many liberals he seemed to think that Jihad began because of the Crusades.(chapter 2, battle of Hattin). He must be reading too much Arab propaganda. I suggest he check his information-this so called "Holy War" began long before Crusades. Mohammed made it clear in Koran that "infidels"(that's everyone who is not Muslim) must be destroyed. His followers started conquest of other nations because they believe that its their duty to convert or kill everyone who doesn't follow the teachings of Koran(don't even get me started on that subject). Other that this slip-up, this is a very well written book and I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in military history.

An interested military history book.......2007-09-15
In this book, the author takes seventeen situations (sixteen battles and the non-violent collapse of East Germany), and shows how things other than military brilliance brought the situation to its climax. Sometimes it was stupidity, sometimes it was arrogance, and one time it was the lack of some nails!
The narrative of each story is well written and presented in all of its fascination. What I liked about this book was that the author presented a number of battles that I have never bothered to read about before, and includes many details that I had never encountered about the ones I had read! I highly recommend this book
In case it helps your decision, the chapters are on Troy (1184 BC), Hattin (1187), Agincourt (1415), Karansebes (1788), Waterloo (1815), Balaclava (1854), Antietam (1862) Koniggratz (1866), Spioen Kop (1900), Tannenberg (1914), Tanga (1914), France (1940), North Atlantic (1941), Moscow (1941), Vietnam (1968), Berlin (1989), and the Persian Gulf (1991).

From Publishers Weekly:
What decides victory in battle? Superiority--in numbers, leadership, strategy or fighting ability--is certainly a factor. Military historian and war correspondent Durschmied, who lives in France, reminds us that chance--known in military terms as the Hinge Factor--can also play a decisive role. In this fast-paced study, Durschmied (Don't Shoot the Yanqui, etc.) analyzes battles both famous and obscure, showing how chance has enabled inferior armies to defeat superior opponents, thus changing the course of history. Serious readers will approach some chapters with tongue firmly in cheek. Few might accept, for example, that a slap on the face set in motion events that brought on the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia or that a parcel containing three cigars extended the American Civil War for four years. Other episodes are more plausible. Durschmied makes a good case that a swarm of angry bees decided the outcome of a key battle between British and German forces in German East Africa in 1914. Similarly, he shows how weather, which has bedeviled field commanders throughout the ages, played a decisive role in the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. The author concludes each chapter with a series of provocative questions designed to draw armchair strategists into a spirited game of What-if? More entertaining than scholarly, this will nevertheless please military buffs. Maps. (Mar).

Book Description
This monograph gives a comprehensive account of Maude, a language and system based on rewriting logic. Maude and its formal tool environment can be used in three mutually reinforcing ways: as a declarative programming language, as an executable formal specification language, and as a formal verification system. Maude is used in many institutions around the world for teaching, research, and formal modeling and analysis of concurrent and distributed systems.
Many examples are used throughout the book to illustrate the main ideas, features, and uses of Maude. The book comes with a CD-ROM containing the complete Maude 2.3 software distribution (including source code), a pdf version of this monograph, and the executable Maude code for all the examples in the book.

Book Description
This English translation of the author's original work has been thoroughly revised, expanded and updated.
The book covers logical systems known as
type-free or
self-referential. These traditionally arise from any discussion on logical and semantical paradoxes. This particular volume, however, is not concerned with paradoxes but with the investigation of type-free sytems to show that: (i) there are rich theories of self-application, involving both operations and truth which can serve as foundations for property theory and formal semantics; (ii) these theories provide a new outlook on classical topics, such as inductive definitions and predicative mathematics; (iii) they are particularly promising with regard to applications.
Research arising from paradoxes has moved progressively closer to the mainstream of mathematical logic and has become much more prominent in the last twenty years. A number of significant developments, techniques and results have been discovered.
Academics, students and researchers will find that the book contains a thorough overview of all relevant research in this field.

Description:
We develop a framework for trading in compound securities: financial instruments that pay off contingent on the outcomes of arbitrary statements in propositional logic. Buying or selling securities-which can be thought of as betting on or against a particular future outcome-allows agents both to hedge risk and to profit (in expectation) on subjective predictions. A compound securities market allows agents to place bets on arbitrary Boolean combinations of events, enabling them to more closely achieve their optimal risk exposure, and enabling the market as a whole to more closely achieve the social optimum. The tradeoff for allowing such expressivity is in the complexity of the agents' and auctioneer's optimization problems. We develop and motivate the concept of a compound securities market, presenting the framework through a series of formal definitions and examples. We then analyze in detail the auctioneer's matching problem. We show that, with n events, the matching problem is worst-case intractable: specifically, the problem is co-NP-complete in the divisible case and @S"2^p-complete in the indivisible case. We show that the latter hardness result holds even under severe language restrictions on bids. With log n events, the problem is tractable (polynomial) in the divisible case and worst-case intractable (NP-complete) in the indivisible case. We briefly discuss matching algorithms and tractable special cases.

Description:
Temporary housing is a crucial but controversial part of disaster recovery; disaster-affected families who have lost their homes need a private and secure place to restart their daily activities as soon as possible after the disaster, yet temporary housing programmes tend to be overly expensive, too late and responsible for undesirable impacts on the urban environment. The purpose of this research is to recognize exactly what problems exist with temporary housing in the long term (that is after 5 years) and to identify, using the systems approach, the origin of these problems within the project process for temporary housing. Using the Logical Framework Approach to highlight the projects' outcomes, the investigation focuses on the case study of the temporary housing programme for the 1999 earthquakes in Turkey and on four temporary housing projects in Duzce, one disaster-affected town. It is found that unwanted effects can be reduced through proper facilities management, reuse of the units, and by the initial application of unit designs that are easy to dismantle. Incorporating plans upfront, thus dealing with these problems by anticipation, can minimize negative impacts.

Description:
As the Web has emerged as a large distributed data repository, individuals and organizations have been able to utilize the low-cost information and knowledge on the Internet when making business decisions. Because data in different data sources may be conflictive or untrue, researchers and practitioners must intensify efforts to develop appropriate techniques for its efficient use and management. In this paper, a logical framework is designed for identifying quality knowledge from different data sources, thus working towards the development of an agreed ontology. Our experimental results have demonstrated that the approach is promising, and that a minor data enhancement adjustment could bring higher effectiveness.
