    Book Description

Shrouds of Glory is Winston Groom's riveting account of General John Bell Hood's decisive actions in the western theater of operations during the final moments of the Civil War. Taking us on a journey through the ravaged Confederacy to the once-vibrant city of Nashville — where General Hood makes a last, futile attempt to preserve the Confederacy — Shrouds of Glory brings the reader into the general's tent, where Grant, Sherman, Lee, and others plot their often unorthodox strategies for winning the war. Groom paints vivid portraits of Hood and his nemeses, revealing the character, faults, emotions, and most of all the doubts that molded the course of conflict.

5 out of 5 stars Hood gets a fair shake..........2007-05-24

Bravo for Mr. Groom's balanced account of Jospeh "I'll retreat instead" E. Johnston's favorite whipping-boy, John Bell Hood. While Wiley Sword offers a character assassination, Groom gives the reader first-rate balanced analysis. Those who regard Sword's work as the high-mark for this topic owe themselves a peek at this book - especially around pages 200, as Groom offers a blow-by-blow rebuttal to all Hood's attackers. Groom does not necessarily defend Hood, but more offers a genuine presentation of ALL the facts. Matter of fact, if I recall correctly, Sword's nonsense is not even noted as a source by Groom!

    2 out of 5 stars Forgettable.......2005-12-02

Considering Groom's talents as a writer, I was disappointed in this book. I got so bored with it that I practically had to make myself finish it. The campaign itself is a very interesting one, but the book does not read that way. That being said, the book does serve as a decent introduction to the Army of Tennessee and the campaign, but just is not in-depth or compelling enough for most buffs, I would think. This book is useful as a start, but if you find yourself interested in the campaign after this book, move on to Wiley Sword's The Confederacy's Last Hurrah.

3 out of 5 stars Shrouds of story..........2005-08-04

This is a fine account of the final campaign of the Army of Tennessee and has some welcome insights particularly into the fine qualities of General Thomas.

However, for those readers looking for greater detail and for outstanding maps of the various regimental, brigade positions, then look to Wiley Swords, Embrace an Angry Wind or The Last Hurrah. In this reader's opinion a much more exciting and detailed accounting of this last great movement of the Army of Tennessee.

5 out of 5 stars Great Civil War History Book for Novices.......2005-04-27

This book is definitely one I would recommend for people who are not history buffs. This one reads like a novel and is not a dry account of facts or figures. It puts flesh and bones on real life characters. It is well written and an easy read. It is lacking in a few maps but it is mercifully lacking in annoying footnotes which at times can bog down reader's interests while reading facts and figures instead of keeping abreast of the story line. Now some people want and need more maps but I found it very adequate. I enjoyed this book and learned quite a bit of Civil War history about the Atlanta to Nashville campaign I didn't know about.

    4 out of 5 stars Hood's last hurrah - Gen. George Thomas's vindication.......2000-05-07

Shrouds of Glory does an efficent job of laying out John Bell Hood's last hurrah at a little known, but crucial battle of the Civil War. What may not be so well known is that the Battle of Nashville in December of 1864 was also the vindication of the Union General George "Pap" Thomas, (who by the way was originally from Virginia).

Linclon & Grant had their doubts about Thomas's waiting game at Nashville. The orders to relieve him of command were on the the way when Thomas unleashed the Union attack and the resulting disaster to the Confederate Army of Tennesee vindicated his patience. Sherman said the Battle of Nashville was the only battle of the Civil War where a whole army ceased to exist after the fight.

If Hood was desperate to make a break through, and he was, as Groom has laid out. Thomas was just as determined to close the door once and for all. I appreciated how this book laid out the events leading up to that battle.

Just as a side note, one of the Union regiments at Nashville was the Ohio 182nd Infantry. In that regiment was my great-grandfather, Sgt. George Debolt Newcomer.

        Book Description

This is the first history of the development of American Jewish political conservatism and the rise of a group of Jewish intellectuals and activists who are known as neoconservatives. It describes the growth of perhaps a dozen such figures in the 1940s and 50s, including Irving Kristol, Nathan Glazer and Norman Podhoretz, to several hundred younger people such as Paul Wolfowitz, David Brooks and Charles Krauthammer who have had a powerful impact on American public policy, including the run up to and aftermath of the war in Iraq.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Conservatism is NOT a religious movement.......2007-07-30

This book is must reading for anyone who wants to have a firm grasp of politics in the twentieth century. It is also must reading for anyone who thinks conservatism is a religious reaction to the secularization of society. That belief could not be more false. Sure, "theocons" do exist, but they are only one small form of conservatism. What conservatism actually is is a reaction against facism and socialism led predominantly by completely secular men (and as Friedman adds, most of them were Jewish). Liberals of the Great Depression criticized capitalism for its failures. Liberals of the fifties criticized capitalism for its successes. The neocons were those who'd had enough, and stepped up to the plate to defend capitalism and the vision of the founding fathers.

American Conservatism can be thought of as the fusion of two lines of thought or ideas that are in Europe thought contradictory (and maybe this is part of the reason why Europeans have such a big problem with American conservatism). These two ideas are the importance of individual freedom and the importance of tradition or a code of ethics needed to civilize an otherwise naturally savage species.

This is what Thomas Sowell calls the "constrained vision" of human nature. Liberals tend to embrace the "unconstrained vision," which assumes that people are just naturally good and that ignorant policies are the only thing keeping us back from developing the utopia we could easily create. Liberals believe that if high-minded third-party decision makers tell the public how they should live their lives and impose their values on everyone else that utopia would only be a few years away.

The problems with this thinking, according to the constrained vision, is that first, in order for the government to have the power to create such a utopia a totalitarian regime must first be established, and second, even if a totalitarian leader managed to force his (or her as may soon happen) vision on everyone else, according to the constrained vision this will likely only make things worse, not better. Most social "programs" have unexpected consequences, and have historically only tended to make the problem in question worse than it already was.

According to the constrained vision we should focus on process and incentives, not lofty outcomes. Welfare might have a lofty outcome for example (to lift people out of poverty), but when one focuses on incentives created one sees that welfare will only create more poverty. People with the unconstrained vision in the sixties saw this before it even happened. When Barry Goldwater heard about welfare he said all this will do is create a caste system in America. Paying people to not help themselves is about as strong a reinforcer to NOT help yourself as could possibly be created.

So instead of people preempting your decisions and telling you how to live your life, conservatives emphasize individual freedom combined with an emphasis on classical virtues such as stoicism, reticence and honor. This is a recipe for fuller, more self-actualized citizens who create more and together, through good competition, make society a better place for all who live in it, including the poorest. (There really are no "poor" people in America after all. The average person who lives below the poverty line works 16 hours a week and spends $2.50 for every $1 earned. This is a behavioral problem, not a societal problem!) Liberals instead focus on instant gratification, getting in touch with "feelings," and the destruction of personal responsibility, which creates a society of dependent complainers who have been conditioned out of helping themselves. This removes the incentives to succeed by destroying meritocracy and in the end pulls everyone down to the mean. Society as a result will suffer.

Conservatives emphasize fairness in process; liberals emphasize fairness in outcome, which necessitates the creation of unfair processes in order to force the preconceived "fair" outcome. This unfair process typically punishes success and resourcefulness and rewards laziness and sloth. Thus we can see that conservatism is not so much a religious movement (this is a HUGE misconception), as it was actually spearheaded largely by completely secular thinkers whose common feature was an opposition to all forms of fascism, which includes all forms of socialism.

        5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2006-07-20

This is an excellent account of an important political phenomenon by a sympathetic historian. No, the elders of Zion are not taking over the government. 80% of Jews still vote Democratic despite the fact that the right is significantly more supportive of Israel that the left. But the main focus is not Israel but America. Unlike paleoconservatives, neoconservatives are typically ex-liberals who split with the left first over foreign policy (because the left viewed commies benignly as liberals in a hurry rather than the totalitarians they are) and then over domestic cultural issues. As a non-Jew, I can attest that this work will resonate deeply with those who have spent too much of their lives under the spell of the sixties counterculture. Sanity now.

5 out of 5 stars A competent neo- con history .......2005-07-15

This book tells the story of how a group of secular, largely Jewish intellectual liberals were 'mugged by reality', and became conservatives, or rather neo- conservatives. The neo- conservatives are distinguished from the old - line Republican conservatives. It tells of how this group two of whose prominent figures were Irving Kristol and Norman Podhoretz moved to the center of American political life. And how they and their colleagues became important figures in forming both domestic ( Supply- side economics) and foreign policy.
This book is detailed and thorough, but somehow not very exciting. But it is a competent telling of an important chapter in modern American history.
        A few interesting points.
William F. Buckley disassociated himself early from the 'lunatic anti- Semitic right' and this helped in his pushing Conservative thought to the center of American political life.
The neo- cons were very concerned to have realistic , practical workable social policies, and were tired of grandiose and empty promises of Liberalism.
Neo- cons like Kristol and Podhoretz felt a deep gratitude to America and were alienated by the Leftist hatefilled attacks on American policy.
The 'anti- Semitism' of the left did not begin yesterday or four years ago, but Podhoretz and others felt it strongly in the seventies.
The Conservative ' revolution' was achieved in good part through the alliance of the neo- cons with more veteran conservatives like Buckley.
America seems to have greatly benefited from the neo- con contribution to its political life.

          Book Description

Departing from the conventional view of mishnaic transmission as mindless rote memorization, Transmitting Mishnah reveals how multi-faceted the process of passing on oral tradition was in antiquity. Taking advantage of the recently burgeoning files of orality studies, Alexander develops a model of transmission that is both active and constructive. Proceeding by means of intensive readings of passages from tractate Shevuot and its talmudic commentaries, Alexander alerts us to the fact that transmitters and handlers of mishnaic text crafted both the vagaries of expression and its meanings. She illustrates how the authority of the Mishnah grew as the result of the sustained attention of a devoted community of students. She also identifies the study practices and habits of analysis that were cultivated by oral performance. She shows how they were passed on in tandem with the verbal contents of the Mishnah, thereby influencing how the text was received and understood.

            Book Description

The Holocaust took place far from the United States and involved few Americans, yet rather than receding, this event has assumed a greater significance in the American consciousness with the passage of time. In the depths of the 1940s and 1950s, when the term Holocaust as we now use it had not yet been invented, when survivors were silent and stigmatized, and when the destruction of European Jewry did not figure in public discourse, who could have predicted that the Holocaust would move so forcefully to the center of American culture? Yet today the Holocaust has been admitted into the mainstream media and has become the subject of profitable and high-profile film and television projects. Survivors have become sought-after authorities, whose stories are told not only in books but aloud before respectful audiences on special days of remembrance, and vast projects have been undertaken to interview survivors on videotape before their testimony is no longer available. As a window into the process whereby the Holocaust has been appropriated in American culture, Hollywood movies are particularly luminous. Popular Culture and the Shaping of Holocaust Memory in America examines reactions to three films: Judgment at Nuremberg (1961), The Pawnbroker (1965), and Schindler's List (1992), and considers what those reactions reveal about the place of the Holocaust in the American mind, and how those films have shaped the popular perception of the Holocaust. It also considers the difference in the reception of the two earlier films when they first appeared in the sixties and retrospective evaluations of them from closer to our own times. Alan Mintz also addresses the question of how Americans will shape the memory of the Holocaust in the future, concluding with observations on the possibilities and limitations of what is emerging as the major resource for the shaping of Holocaust memory--videotaped survivor testimony. The Holocaust will undoubtedly continue to occupy a place of prominence in the American psyche. Popular Culture and the Shaping of Holocaust Memory in America examines some of the influences behind the broad and deep changes in American consciousness and the social forces that permitted the Holocaust to move from the margins to the center of American discourse.

              Book Description

Foreign aid has increasingly become subject to political conditionality. In the 1980s some institutions made aid dependent upon the recipient countries' economic policy reforms. Market liberalisation was the primary instrument and objective. In the 1990s such conditionality was brought one step further; aid was now linked to political reforms, affecting recipient countries' governing systems, requiring democracy, human rights and 'good governance'. This volume looks at these developments and considers the conditionality policies of several European aid donors. Such policies are also considered from recipient perspectives, both from the Third World and Russia, and the issue is also considered from a historical perspective.

              Book Description

Having gained ascendancy over the Palestinian center of Judaism, the Geonim who headed the ancient talmudic academies of Babylonia came to be recognized by most of the world`s Jews as the leading religious and spiritual authorities from the late sixth to mid-eleventh centuries. This book-the only survey in English of the crucial Geonic period-focuses on the cultural and historical milieu of the Geonim as well as their intellectual and literary creativity.

5 out of 5 stars For serious students only.......2001-05-20

Professor Brody's book is not for the faint hearted. It is written for the serious student of Jewish history and civilisation - academics, scholars and committed non-professionals. But staying with it is well worth the effort. Brody's compehensive knowledge of the period shines through and his insights into the daily life of the geonim are fascinating and very believable. Necessarily Brody has had to pick examples to prove his thesis and some scholars might question whether these were carefully chosen to support a pre-formed theory. However this book is still a major contribution to our understanding of the yeshivot and rabbinical leadership of the geonic period and well worth the read. The cover price is very high so hopefully it will find a wide circulation amongst university and Jewish community libraries.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for the Continuing Study of the Holocaust.......2001-09-01

The holocaust continues to have a dramatic effect on society. This book offers insights through the essays of holocaust surviors and their offspring into the many questions about the event itself and its aftermath. The co-editors each have a parent who is a survivor and each contributed an essay about the effects of the holocaust on their lives and the lives of their children. Irene Raab Epstein's essay at the beginning of the book may be the most enlightening essay on what it is like to realize that you had survived the event when many others had simply lost their will to survive.

                  Book Description

The comedic work of the children of modern Jewish immigrants overturned the prevailing languages and imageries with which an Anglocentric United States had traditionally represented and expanded itself. In Gravity Fails: The Comic Jewish Shaping of Modern America, James D. Bloom approaches these developments by first surveying this transformation as it affected literature, entertainment, commerce, and politics, and then offers sharply focused chapters that look at changes in sexual candor, reactions to the Holocaust, and critiques of race. Indeed, the personae discussed here pioneered unprecedented candor toward and scrutiny about sex and violence, and no other book delves as deeply or as widely among art forms, media, and levels of cultural hierarchy. Including considerations of the work of such diverse artists as Woody Allen, Mel Brooks, Lenny Bruce, Gilda Radner, Philip Roth, Jerry Seinfeld, and Stephen Sondheim, Gravity Fails provides a unique, penetrating, and hilarious look at a major force in the progress of American culture.
