An excellent resource for mothers and care-givers of infant children. This book helps to equip the care-giver to be better care-giver. Part of the book was non-traditional in the sense of it being a resource book.

5 out of 5 stars Leboyer's massage instruction is poetry!.......2007-05-27

Beautifully written, with photos to demonstrate the techniques that could be an art book in and of themselves. You get a feeling of being a part of something magical and wonderful by reading this book and practicing what's in it. I love the simplicity of this book. Highly recommend it for new moms or anyone interested in infant massage.

Nothing compares to this book, other books or DVDs are a waste of time compare to Loving Hands. Is beautiful and real helpful, for both mother and child. Worth every single penny and much more.

the original baby massage book and still the best one out there.

4 out of 5 stars Nice for a book, but I'd rather look at a video. (I'm very visual.).......2006-01-14

This book is nice, but for the same price you can buy a DVD on the subject. I like Aimee Ketchum's DVD because not only does she do a great job of demonstrating baby massage, but she also gives lots of information on how your baby develops. Her massage method lasts only 4-5 minutes per session. I really don't have the time to spend an hour giving my baby a massage. There is so much more information on her DVD about your baby and how simple exercises can help your baby's brain development and lots and lots of other stuff. I just don't see why you'd want to buy a book with only massage pictures in it when you can buy a DVD with not only lots of massage info, but also has tons and tons of other simple stuff you can do with your baby. It makes so much sense and you don't need to buy anything else. Plus Aimee has a nice personality and you can tell she really cares. She's very qualified and is a pediatric OT plus certified massage therapist for babies, like Gweneth Paltro hires to massage her baby.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on "hand quilting" for the beginner........2006-11-27

I've been researching books that teach hand quilting for quite a while and never found one that I felt satisfied with until I discovered this one. This is my favorite hand quilting guide for several reasons. First, the author presents three different methods of hand quilting: the rocking stitch (on a hoop or frame with shorter needles), lap quilting (with no hoop or frame and longer needles), and quilting done one stitch at a time ("stab stitching") which causes the least amount of stress on the wrist. All of these techniques are supported with excellent photos and written descriptions that are easy to understand and follow. Second, the author reviews various quilt battings that can be used in hand quilting and provides recommendations on how to "split" a batting to obtain the thinnest batting possible for ease of hand quilting. Third, the author provides a very intelligent framework for developing a quilting design strategy for your particular quilt, which begins with a high level overview of the "major" design decisions. After you pass these hurdles, everything else easily falls into place. An added bonus is a historical overview of stitching done on antique applique quilts and the rationale for design choices made by women in the 18th and 19th Centuries. I had been searching for a book that focuses on quilting designs for applique quilts so this was very greatly appreciated.
Fourth, the author also provides an excellent review of quilting frames and needles in addition to excellent guidance on how to prepare thread for hand quilting with the use of bees wax. Fifth, the author provides guidance for making your own feather designs for borders and includes templates in the book using a method that I have never seen before and inspired me to try. There is so much encouraging and supportive advice in this book. The author is a 6th generation quilter and has done extensive research on antique quilts and is a master hand quilter as well as an excellent writer and teacher. It is so very rare to get written instruction for a visual art that is this good for beginners. I know there are alot of other highly praised authors on this subject, but after exploring everything out there, I found this one to be the absolute best! Apparantly alot of other people seem to agree, more than 50,000 copies have sold since it first came out in print in 2003.

    5 out of 5 stars Kimball is a favorite.......2005-12-26

I don't keep every quilt book I buy, but this one is a keeper. If you're a hand quilter or want to be, you will benefit from this book. Ms Kimball is one of my favorite applique and quilting people. I always learn something new from her. This book is no exception.

    5 out of 5 stars Hand-quilting thrives!!.......2004-03-30

With hundreds of quilting books, I didn't need another one. But since Jeana Kimball's needles are my favorite, I took a chance. Wow!! How did she get so much information in 80 pages? She covers quilting through, around, and for applique, popular designs for the body of the quilt as well as the borders(both historical and modern), and tools. Every step is punctuated with a glossy color photo example of an actual hand-made masterpiece. And Jeana is classy, when she discusses needles, she doesn't even mention her own.

2 out of 5 stars How much is there to say about Hand Quilting?.......2000-02-16

Just a couple of pages in this book are actually about the process of quilting itself. There is a long part about the history of quilts (quite good if you are interested in that), a gallery of quilts (beautifully quilted) and general instructions on materials and planning a quilt. The author also tries to explain how to make a quilting design fit the size of your own quilt but that is done very poorly. I have seen much better instructions in other books. The quilting part is okay but it is just a few pages. This is definitely not a book every quilter needs even if you prefer hand quilting to machine quilting.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC BOOK that touches the heart.......2001-09-19

I was given the book by a friend and absolutely loved it! I was surprised at the vehemence of the lady from NY -- evidently she was looking for a "how-to" book (she's looking for Martha Stewart, not Sandy Clough), and didn't realize that Heirlooms from the Heart is a gift book, meant for sharing and inspiration. This book is a book that can be picked up any time, savored over a cup of tea, or during personal time for reflection on the good things in our lives put there by loving hands. It made me appreciate my childhood spent with my mother and grandmother, their passing on their knowledge of womanly arts and working to make one's family and friends feel loved and cared for.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing -- no directions!.......2000-10-29

This was a huge disappointment. It was all lengthy reminiscences, etc., rather than directions for making heirlooms. For example, many of the ideas were inane things I can't imagine doing; others were so common you'd have had to be newborn not to know already. That's definitely not what I want in a book.

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming look at passing love on to future generations!.......1999-01-02

Being someone who has always loved to craft and sew and make things with my hands, I am so thrilled to find this book which has managed to put into words the feelings that I have felt as I work on each piece, whether it be a gift (which it usually is) or for myself and my own family. The author has defined in this book what heirlooms really are...and that is far different than the well-polished, antique store variety that we often think of. Our heirlooms are all around us...those small things passed down from our grandparents to our parents to us...they may not be beautiful, they may not be enshrined and on display...they may very well be things we still use today. The common thread is that their origins are steeped in the love that materialized through the hands that created them generations ago, as well as the hands that made use of them down through the years. I will never look at the things I make in quite the same light again...whereas they may seem like "just gifts" today, this book reminded of how much more they really are.

My mother gave me this book and I have to smile every time I read it. It is always on my bedside table and when I need a reminder of how hard it can be sometimes to be a mom or when I just need a good belly laugh, I pick it up. I am slowly giving one to all of my girlfriends who are moms to remind them that being a mother is the most important although often under-rated job. Well worth the money!!!!!

              Book Description

Manliness has always been linked to physical prowess and to war; indeed the warrior has been the archetypal man across countless cultures throughout time. In this magisterial excursion through literature, history, warfare, and sociology, one of our most prominent scholars tracks the complex relationship between the changing methods and goals of warfare and shifting models of manhood. This journey takes us from the citizen soldiers of ancient Greece to the medieval knights to the misogynistic terrorists of Al Qaeda.

As he chronicles these transformations, Leo Braudy weighs the significance of everything from weapon technology to the hairstyles favored during different eras. He offers fresh insights on codes of war and codes of racial purity, and on cultural and historical figures from Socrates to Don Quixote to Napoleon to Custer to Rambo. Epic in scope and free of academic jargon, From Chivalry to Terrorism is a masterwork of scholarship that is both accessible and breathtakingly ambitious.

              4 out of 5 stars Be a man--whatever that is..........2007-07-24

*From Chivalry to Terrorism* is a massive book with tiny print--a real brick of a text. Just opening it up--just lifting it up--can make it seem like a daunting read. And it is a bit daunting. But, let's face it, a wide-ranging study of war and gender that encompasses some 2500 years or so of human history, from Achilles to al Qaeda, would have to be at least a *little* daunting, right?

But once one takes the plunge and wades around a bit in this hugely entertaining book one begins to feel quite comfortably at home. That's because Braudy doesn't let the potential weightiness of his topic keep him from writing in an accessible and lively style.

Braudy's chief concern is the definition of `masculinity,' and how, contrary to what many might believe, it has shifted throughout the centuries. Is a `man' the product of his biology or his social conditioning? It's a question not unlike the one posed by feminists regarding women and the answer proves to be just as elusive. Most likely, it seems, a `man' is some impossible to determine formula containing a mix of hormones, cultural seasonings, and socio-political molding...and all of it heated in the crucible of war. For, as Braudy points out, war is the single most important constant that's defined masculinity throughout the centuries.

Using historical sources, literature, art, and popular culture, Braudy builds a compelling case for the idea that what makes a man a man often depends on a culture's defense against its enemies, its own imperialist dreams of expansion, the pathologies of its leaders.

*From Chivalry to Terrorism* often loses the thread of half of its proposed topic--the changing nature of masculinity--and becomes more of a history of war alone, and its effect on society as a whole. But even then Braudy doesn't fail to entertain and inform, even if he makes his book that much longer and unfocused than it strictly needs to be. Going off track as he does, the reader is treated to some interesting perspectives. Still, if I have one major criticism of the book it's that while for the most part Braudy remains neutral and objective he colors--and discolors--some of the later chapters regarding more current events with shades of the prevailing politically correct opinions of the day, even while criticizing the politically correct opinions popular in days gone by for their unenlightened short-sightedness. Braudy seems to be blind himself to the obvious fallacy of believing our own `scientific' and expert views on such issues as homosexuality, for instance, are any less flawed or definitive, any less influenced by prevailing social mores than those of the past.

But a far more glaring lack of objectivity comes in a chapter titled `Targeting Civilians' in which Braudy incomprehensibly fails to mention what is, perhaps, history's most damning example of a wartime government targeting the civilian population of a rival nation: the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. While he mentions the dropping of these bombs later in a wider, more philosophic context, as if they had nothing specifically to do with American policy, the failure to present this unprecedented nuclear assault on a civilian population seems more than a mere oversight, but a failure of nerve. One can only speculate whether Braudy feared to alienate a large part of his readership by appearing un-American, or implying that the 9-11 attacks were somehow less undeserved and not quite so heinous by comparison. In any event, I found the omission unconscionable.

For that matter, whenever Braudy moves away from history and moves into commentary about history, the book tends towrds a muddled-headed, fuzzy, Oprah-like optimism that conveniently offers `proof' of the most liberal-minded attitudes of contemporary American society regarding gender, peace, world government, economics, religion, and just about everything else. Braudy, as a `thinker,' is clearly not an author who takes any chances or wants to ruffle any feathers. He breaks open no new ground, offers no fresh insights, nor does he have any desire to do so. In this regard, his appeal is to the widest possible audience.

Still, *From Chivalry to Terrorism* is a book well-worth reading for the history of war alone, and the interesting revelations about the ever-changing attitudes of what it's meant to be a `man.' You can't help but come away feeling sorry for us guys, shot to pieces, stabbled, and blown to smithereens over the centuries whether we had it in us to be warriors or not. If it really is a `man's world,' then you're probably talking about it belonging not to one-half of the population, but maybe one percent of it...because by the warrior definition of what it takes to be a man, that leaves out a full ninety-nine percent of all the rest of us, no matter what sort of genitals we have.

4 out of 5 stars Man Divested of his Armor.......2005-08-23

Braudy's book is a work of synthesis, not exclusively history or social science, which focuses on the relation of men to war over the continum time in the West. His analyses of the cultural connections associated with masculinity and the theory and practice of war are extremely thought provoking and worth contemplating.

At the core of the book is the notion that what biochemistry initiates, environment influences, sustains, and shifts over history. Braudy observes that warrior culture is polarizing because it is defined by what it is not and that in the West, armies are no longer the repository of "real men" in the traditional sense. He concludes that in the current global war radical Islam's warrior-oriented terrorism represents the ideals of medieval Europe, a concept the West is moving away from. A constant thread that runs throughout the book is the clash of technology (commercial society) versus honor (eternal values): a revolt against materialism. There are multiple intellectual veins that one can explore.

The book is excellent in its coverage of history up to the Vietnam War era but some of Braudy's views should be taken with a grain of salt. His view that male comraderie is inherently homoerotic is taken from a selective interpretation of ancient Greek history and an ideological view of the development of the Uniform Code of Military Justice in 1954. Another view is that terrorism is a form of gender war opposed to plurality and multiculturalism, ect. The current war for the survival of the West is more complex. It is troubling that the author does not understand the contemporary US military and what motivates its members to fight for their country.

By the end of the book, the reader will realize that the Western warrior has been divested of the armor that protected him and gave him dignity for centuries in a brutal, competitive and unjust world. Man is reduced to a social construct devoid of spiritual substance: if the Western warrior is reduced to nothing by his own society, then the West will end up as nothing. Good book but take the last chapter with a grain of salt.

              5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, .......2005-05-14

This book is a masterful achievement, and, given a work of this scope, it is not surprising that some of the details are factually wrong. For example, 58,000 British troops did not die on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916. There were about 58,000 British casualties, of whom about 19,000 died.
Also, the US Navy did not lead the Army in integration. In fact, the Army commissioned black officers well before World War Two, while the Navy commissioned its first black officers in the 1950s. Despite the occasional factual error, the book is a major study that belongs in the company of such books as John Keegan's, The Face of Battle.

              5 out of 5 stars LEO BRAUDY'S MASTERLY ACHIEVEMENT.......2004-01-17

STIMULATING in its uses of the past, HEARTBREAKING in its description of the 20th Century's uses of propaganda to prepare men for war, STUNNINGLY insightful as it connects seemingly disparate strands; e.g.: the fictional detective as heroic loner and TS Eliot's The Wasteland, BRILLIANTLY amusing as it discusses poetic evocations of premature ejaculation...In a word(or two) A Man's a Man and Leo Braudy's book should be read by any and all who've tried to puzzle out the reason why.

4 out of 5 stars Field Guide To Western Birds.......2007-09-27

The book is excellent in most respect. But like all of these types it doesn't provide much help in actually identifying a bird. You can't go from "small-brown-stripes on side-purple head-green feet-S. Az area to Pages xxx & xxx for the types.

4 out of 5 stars This is the book for people who like birds but didn't major in biology.......2007-08-24

So we have this pond in our backyard and it's attracted alot of birds. My husband and I have no idea what species they are or what they eat since we work in the judicial system not for the Forest Service. The solution seems pretty simple...go to Amazon and buy a bird book. So, after reviewing several options; many of which seem to require at least a Master's level education in biology and years of field experience in identification, I wildly and in some what a desperate state picked this book. What a relief when it arrives and lo and behold it is written in English with lots of pictures! We use this book at least 3-4 times per week. It is very user friendly and a great resource for the average person who wants to know what to call the yellow bird eating all the sunflower seeds...besides greedy.

I really appreciate the drawings in this book. They are much more helpful than pictures. Also the habits are helpful when trying to identify a particular species when there are similar ones in your area.

This is an excellent book if you are a bird watcher. My husband received a copy of this book as a gift a couple of years ago and has since worn it out, that was the purpose of purchasing a new copy.

                5 out of 5 stars Western Birds.......2007-05-13

As someone new to birdwatching I needed to find some good field guides at several points on my recent World Cruise and I bought Peterson's Western Birds to use for my visit to San Francisco. I found this a very impressive book, considering the fact that it covers 700 species in such a small book. The illustrations are excellent and arrows show clearly the distinguishing points to look for with closely related species. They include summer and winter variations, juvenile plumages and birds in flight.
It is not a full field guide and does not give details of habitat but it has all the essentials for identification. It is slightly irritating to have the maps in a separate section at the end but this must aid the concise nature of the book.
All in all I would recommend it as a handy pocket guide to take in the field, supplemented by an alternative source of fuller details. Even the hardbacked version is fairly portable. Excellent value for money.
