Customer Reviews:
factual errors abound.......2007-09-04
The majority of the arguments presented by the author, while backed up by statistics and numbers in the text, are skewed to represent the authors opinion. the author writes about womens motivations, not based upon interviews with women in service, but based on his own opinion.
Two Thumbs Down.......2007-08-30
Disguised as a scholarly effort, this book reeks of chauvinism. Mitchell distorts the truth (something he ironically accuses feminists of doing) and makes claims for which he has no basis. For a more accurate look at women's role in the military, see D'Ann Campbell's "Combating the Gender Gulf" (about women's military service in the first Gulf War) or Judith Hick's Stiehm's Arms and the Enlisted Woman. Both works bring to light the complexity of women's roles in the military and give a much more balanced assessment of their history and future in the Armed Forces.
outstanding.......2007-03-22
Insightful, evocative and direct...trust a former soldier to get right to the point. With a seemingly endless number of statistics and various investigative committee results, Mr. Mitchell makes such a case against the extensive use of women in the service that it begs the question why we are even still entertaining the notion that they can pull their own weight. As a deployed soldier, I can attest with first-hand experience to the veracity of Mitchell's conclusion that the presence of women is hampering our fighting ability. Thankyou to the author for saying what needs to be said in an age where effectiveness of military units seems to play second fiddle to the desires of political constituents.
It is sad we need such books, but need them we do. .......2005-11-07
This is an excellent book which details in a very entertaining, but accurate way, the fact that women's inferior strength and robustness is a hazard to not only themselves but also jeopardises the safety and undermines the morale of those who are forced to work with them - which obviously has potentially very serious repercussions for the effectiveness of all branches of the military. In my own country, the UK, the politicians, at the request of the UK's armed services , have finally been forced to admit defeat on this issue after a decade of 'gender blind' egalitarianism imposed upon them by politically correct fantasy. As from April, 2006, women will be removed from many positions and placed in their own platoons, and their training regime and subsequent duties will be "sustainable and commensurate with their physical profile". Kind words and gentle diplomacy indeed. But, alas, it seems that is what is necessary in the contemporary world at present, to merely state the truth and declare what is blatantly obvious to all but the most idelogically brainwashed. And this applies to many other fields of human endeavour besides the military.
So true about what is happening.......2005-10-23
This book tells the truth that others are afraid to tell simply because telling the truth nowadays puts people's job on the line. Many people bash this book because they don't like the fact this is what is going on right now in our armed forces. My father served in the military for over 20 years as a combat aviator and also feels strongly about the issue. Not only him but also his brothers who also served as well as some friends of mine in the service who are actually serving in Irag and Afgan right now. It's sad to see the greatest military power that the world has ever seen is being destroyed from the inside and the attitude of the warrior must be lost because of political correctness.

Excellent Example of History-Anthropology Integration.......2000-11-05
This small book is an excellent example of how the findings of anthropology can extend the frontiers of history into pre-history. It also illustrates how an historian can take too-frequently dry anthropological data and make it into a fascinating account of cultures long-gone.
Shaffer, a Ph.D in East Asian and American history, uses her expertise to interpret anthropological information with historical methods, thereby incorporating this information into the larger historical record.
Although information on the significance of the "Mound-Builders" has long been known in anthropological circles, the significance, the historical extent, and the geographical breadth has generally escaped notice in other fields. In just 100 text pages, Dr. Shaffer places that information into an internal historical context and ties it into the larger world picture. She gives back to the Native Americans of North America their place in world civilization and American history that had been lost.
And it's a very readable book, too.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding overview of Immunology .......2007-09-03
The beauty of this book lies in its folksy language, brevity, completeness, and versatility.
First, the author avoids making you snooze over this potentially dry subject. The prose is clever and written basically as someone would talk to you. Of course, the prose does get a little too relaxed at time, but I find the language far more understandable than some stuffy textbook.
In addition, the author has compiled a brief yet very thorough composition on the immune system here. If you were seeking a very complete overview of immunology without needing to memorize all the details (like cytokines, names of cell receptors, etc.), you could read this book in one night and have a very good understanding of the immune system. However, if you're a medical student needing to actually memorize all those seemingly trivial details, this book is probably sufficient for you as well. That versatility really lends this book to a very diverse audience.
I think that anyone from a college student in an introductory immunology course up to a practicing physician needing a quick reference to the immune system would love owning this book.
Very Helpful.......2007-05-17
I'm a first year medical student and hadn't had immunology until I was taught it in about two weeks this year. This book was exceptionally helpful in giving me the big picture while still providing enough detail to unite the big pieces together. The book isn't exhaustive, but it's not meant to be. It's also very easy to read and memorable. This book was quite useful to me and I highly recommend it.
Great Intro and Big Picture Review.......2007-02-12
As a medical student, studying the immune system can be daunting - it's very easy to lose the forest for the trees. This book brings it all back together by providing a big picture/core concepts presentation of the immune system. If you have a basic understanding of biology (maybe two semesters of undergrad bio) this book will teach you the fundamentals of the immune system. I imagine it will also be a good review for The Dreaded Boards.
I wish all books were like this.......2007-01-04
Awesomely efficient, this short book really can be read in one day, and gives a solid basic understanding of the immune system (at least the reader leaves with that impression). I predict to have read all others of Dr. Sompayrac's books in this series by the end of 2007.
How the Immune System Works (How It Works).......2006-11-10
A fine introduction for a novice. Mr Sompayrac is a good author who has
the student in mind. The discussion is informative and presented in a style that a student or interested lay person will appreciate.

Studies indicate that the well-known effects of stress hormones-ACTH and corticosteroids-are modulated to a large degree by various cytokines-interferons and interleukins. Cytokines: Stress and Immunity provides a comprehensive overview of contemporary knowledge of the role of cytokines in interreactions between the neuroendocrine and immune systems, and the clinical implications of these interactions. This book examines all cytokines, including interleukins, interferons, enkephalins, and endorphins. With its focus on the immune, central nervous, and endocrine systems, this book will impact a broad range of scientists, including both basic researchers and clinicians.

Great for all ages.......2006-01-20
I read this book for the first time when I was 3 or 4 and adored it. I explained to all of my friends how vaccines worked (because after it knows about the threat your immune system can build an to fight the real virus). It has fun and accessible metaphors.
However, don't assume that this is just a kid's book! I'm now a medical student, and I find this book useful to explain immunology to my classmates and patients. It is full of accurate and detailed information.
Amazing Book.......2001-04-12
My 3 1/2 year old son loves this book! I'm forced to read it to him every day, and he now tells me: 1. "Lymphocytes are the smartest cells and make antibodies that knock out the germs...I want to be an antibody!" 2."Macrophages are garbage collectors" 3. "Virus turn my cells into virus machines" 4. "Fibroblasts pull my cut together"
He is still a little confused about the whole "blast" part of the fibroblast...thinking that they should somehow makes something explode...
Extremely good way to introduce science to the young.......2001-04-05
I bought this book for my ten year old son. He read it through in one sitting. Actually, he reread it 3 times on the same day. The simple yet interesting text and excellent drawings captured his imagination. It kept him thirsting for more! He wants me to order all of Dr. Balkwill's books which I did. What an excellent way to introduce science to the uninitiated. I hope Dr. Balkwill will continue to write more of the series!
Biology made fun.......2000-04-04
Cell Wars is a great way to introduce science. It is written in a straightforward manner using easy to understand vocabulary. It describes, in a fun manner, the way the human body fights off bacteria and viruses and tells why we get vaccinations. The illustrations are colorful and fun. The pictures and the story make it fun for both young children and grade school students

Book Description
This book explores the host-pathogen interaction in plants, insects, and mammals to elucidate the origins of the human defense system against infection. Bringing together the latest research in the field of innate immunity, the authors review four significant research areas: plant immunity, invertebrate host defense immunity, pattern recognition receptors in mammalian host defense, and the links between innate and adaptive immunity in mammals. They find that the similarities among insect, plant, and mammalian immunological systems shed light on the complex mechanisms involved in adaptive immunity, thereby increasing our understanding of mammalian host defense.
