Book Description

How To Create a Magical Relationship, winner of the 2007 Nautilus Book Award in the category of Relationships / Men & Women's Issues, is based on the idea that you don't need to "work on" your relationship in order to "fix it". Relationship coaches for nearly two decades and married for over 20 years, authors Ariel & Shya Kane have identified 3 simple Principles of Transformation that allow people to create a relationship that surpasses their dreams. The Kanes reveal how to recognize and bypass the pitfalls to having a happy and satisfying relationship. This book provides a road map to realizing a love relationship to its fullest and it is also a guide to self-discovery and well-being, since the ability to create a magical relationship starts with one's relationship to oneself.

5 out of 5 stars The Wisdom of the Ages.......2007-09-16

Some people might think that it is impossible to create successful relationships immediately, but the Shyas' discuss the concepts that will allow you to do just that. Combining Eastern and Western philosophies, this book deserves a its devoted following and its high, customer ratings. The concepts in this book are timeless and infinitely valuable. I'd also suggest a separately produced, newly-released DVD that is complementary to this book and provides very specific techniques for applying these Shya insights: see the web site of www.tcap.us (the DVD is about building confidence, but it it much more than that).

5 out of 5 stars Pure relationship gold!.......2007-09-10

The golden cover is appropriate, because what's inside is pure gold! In this book, Ariel and Shya Kane share three timeless principles and many real-life examples that will help you to have satisfying relationships with everyone, from the most important people in your life, to the people that you meet each day. Whether you're looking to connect with new people, to reconnect with your loved ones, or are just intrigued by the possibility of "Magical" relationships, this book is for you. It transformed my life - give it a shot!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant for Friendships and Work, As Well As Marriage!.......2007-08-22

How to Create A Magical Relationship is deceptively simple, yet brilliant. At first, I felt one of its major ideas--that seeing a behavioral pattern, without fixing it, is enough to complete it-- was too simple. Then I began to see how it applied to my own life in ways I couldn't have imagined.

An example: I decided a long time ago that my mother should have learned to speak my father's first language, Spanish. I was embarrassed that she couldn't speak it well, and thought that she should work harder to learn it. As a result, I decided that when I grew up, I would study languages. Well, I did, but because I learned in a very competitive way, I was overly-sensitive to criticism, and I frequently got burned out. I even destroyed a couple of friendships by insisting that bilingual friends divide languages equally- in other words, if I had a Korean friend, I wanted us to spend half of our time speaking Korean, even if the friend was fluent in English. If they didn't agree to this, I'd feel they were cheating me.

This book helped me to recognize that pattern and even see small ways I competed in my own marriage! I still study languages, and I have a great relationship with my husband, but when my competitive side shows up, I recognize it, and in the seeing, I am able to avoid it. As a result, I'm able to listen better, take correction, and have more fun. My marriage AND friendships AND my work life are easier, and yes, more magical.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible new possibilities.......2007-06-05

"How to Create a Magical Relationship" is a perfect guideline for possibilities. It touches on all aspects of relationships: the one with
yourself, your partner, parents, friends, colleagues - just every relationship! Easy and fun to read, Ariel and Shya Kane explain the principles of transformation and living in the moment. How awareness and not working on yourself open up doors. A whole new approach that makes all the difference! I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A phenomenal and groundbreaking book! .......2007-06-01

This book is incredible and inspiring. The authors approach relationships (both to ourselves and to each other) from a very pragmatic angle. They put the onus of the relationship on the individual: "It takes two to fight and one to end the fight" is something that I really can see now. I recognize myself and my patterns of behavior in my relationships more clearly than ever before. For example, how my unexamined, mechanical behaviors can trigger unwanted reactions and patterns from other people (especially people who are close to me like my parents). I see how I can cause a chain reaction to occur and I now have the ability to either 'go there' or take a brand-new road. I don't have to be a victim anymore and can instead take 100% responsibility for my life. To the spiritual seeker, a book like this is a blessing!

2 out of 5 stars NOT very reality based..........2007-06-19

My husband has been laid off for over a year now (a victim of downsizing), so I picked this book up at the library in hopes of finding some helpful ideas. Well...a good number of the ideas just left me scratching my head and wondering what planet these ladies are from, because they offered things like :
1. Letting go of your housekeeper, and cleaning your house yourself.
2. Ditto, for lawn and yard help (our son said,"YEAH! FIRE me!!!")
3. Let country club and health club membership dues lapse, and join the Y instead. Well, my "health club" is the mall - I walk there for free, though I DID just put new inner tubes in my bike tires (for less than 11 bucks!)

In all fairness, they did have some good ideas, although even those fall into the common sense, life-as-usual, "everybody I know IRL lives this way anyway" category. (Borrowing movies from the library or friends and limiting rentals, instead of going to the show..., etc.)

If you're the type of person that has always been able to afford household help and belonged to country clubs (that's not me, or anybody that I know), then I guess you might find some useful advice here. Otherwise, stick to something like The Complete Tightwad Gazette instead.

I was just amazed at how this book changed the way I looked at my financial life. I'm sure if it waan't for this book I would be on the streets panhandling. It helped that much, Thank You!!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good Introduction.......2006-07-24

The book covers most of the important issues, however, it does not give adequate detail on any of them. If you want a broad overview of those things you should consider, this is a good place to start. If you are looking for specifics, you will have to follow-up this book with several others that contain more details.

The focus is on awareness and avoidance. Discussion of firearms only makes up a small portion of this book. For those interested in pursuing self defense firearms, Dave Spaulding's Handgun Combatives would be a good follow-up book to read.

A high point is the short discussion on night shooting. This is the first book I have seen that gives clear pictues of all the generally accepted methods of holding a flashlight and a handgun at the same time.

Worth reading if you are starting to think about what you can do to enhance your personal security.

4 out of 5 stars Solid but Needs More!.......2006-07-22

This is a solid book for what it is and what it covers. However, as was mentioned in another review there needs to be more. The chapters could include more details, exercises & drills, etc. As we know, just reading about a subject doesn't improve knowledge and skills, only the application of the material can lead to improvements. I think the authors could have provided more ways for direct applications. However, it's a book that I would recommend to anyone interested in personal safety with or without the use of firearms.

3 out of 5 stars Defensive Living: Attitudes, Tactics, etc........2006-06-30

Ed Lovette captures the essence of self protection. He is clear, concise and obviously knows his subject. The problem is basically space. There is not enough of it. The topics discussed could be expanded quite a bit, especially the aspects of handgun use, carry and choice. More information could be included regarding the psychology of self defence; and, the problems associated with fear, adrenaline and actual application of learned defensive skills in extreme situations. Holding a weapon while paralyzed with fear is a real situational problem. It requires a good deal of learning, practice and conditioning before a working, self defence action can be initiated.

All in all, an excellent book. It just needs to be fleshed out a bit.

5 out of 5 stars HAVE GUN MUST READ.......2005-09-14

IN CALIFORNIA YOU ARE SCREWED IF YOU IF YOU EVER THINK YOU CAN PROTECT YOUR SELF WITHOUT BEING ARRESTED AND GIVING LOTS OF EXPLAINING. YOU BETTER JUST RUN AWAY.

GREAT BOOK A MUST FOR GUN OWNERS.

3 out of 5 stars An introduction to self defense.......2003-06-28

Ed Lovette and Dave Spaulding believe that if a person makes the desicion to carry a handgun, he has a greater responsibility toward himself - and above else to his loved ones to confront the dangers found in the modern society. They have combined their vast law enforcement and military experience to create a handbook to help in such an effort. But, as the majority of this book is about non-gun issues (mental conditoining, awareness, operating a vehicle in an emergency, medical self-help and so on), also those people who don't carry a gun will benefit form reading this book.

Usually, books like this concentrate on guns and tactics - essentially surviving an armed encounter. This book, however, places emphasis on avoiding such situations altogether. That is such an common-sense approach to the subject, one has to wonder why other gun writers concentrate on surviving the attack, and not avoiding it in the first place.

The book covers just about all the important issues of the subject, and there doesn't seem to be anything essential missing. However, this is such a broad subject that a hundred pages is way too little to cover it in adequate detail. Therefore, this book serves mainly as an introduction to the subject - although a very good one.

This journal book is Just For Dads! ( and Grandpa, too). Its about Dads of all ages. Typically, what is handed down from our fathers is both a natural and material inheritance. It is a legacy of genes, behaviors, mannerisms, money, and property. Unless there is some special effort put forth, a lot about Dad is lost upon his death. The purpose of this journal book is for fathers to record their story. It is meant to be a living life gift to their sons and daughters. In this way, fathers can leave a complete legacy, both tangible and intangible, to their children.

The journal speaks to the life and times of a father. It talks about the mother of the father's children. It chats about his pastimes and notable accomplishments. It culminates with Dad's acknowledgements, beliefs, and advice for his children. The journal is styled in a question and answer format. This will help you write down the memories, thoughts, and ideas you wish to share with your children. Please remember, much of what makes up who your children are comes from you, so your story is also their story.

Don't bother with this one. The illustrations are poor and there should have been more photographs of interesting knives. The material is very general and sketchy. A book that goes into a great amount of detail on any particular part of the subject would be more interesting and useful. I think most people would prefer a book showing in detail the mechanics of switchblades and some of the pattent drawings. A book about collectable button knives and their values might be popular too. I would like to read more about the Estes Kefauver and the motivations of other people in office that write and pass stupid laws regulating pocket knives.

My seven year old nephew could have done a better editing job. If the text weren't such a compilation of useless nonsense, I'd say the Paladin editor (if there actually is one)owes Mr. Benson an apology. This book was so horribly put together (misplaced paragraphs, missing words, sentence fragments, etc.) I almost want to believe that this was a vanity printing. If so, I hope the author didn't pay too much.

This book explains the history, legal, and mechanical aspects of switchblades. I found it to be interesting to the point where I read it in one sitting. Some parts weren't as good as others; however, I do not regret adding a copy to my library.

One of the few times I have felt that I have truely wasted my money -- I learned more about switchblades by looking at the ones I have. Drawings are minimal, with essential information left to the imagination. Sad that it is not more informative in detail.

                Book Description

So far, he has seized $700,000 of American businessmen's assets. Every Mafia casino has been closed, and over a billion dollars of mob money has been confiscated. Sam Giancana and other Mafia bigwigs are extremely unhappy with Fidel. They are looking for a way to get even. So are the Americans, many of whom have been forced to flee to safety. Castro has already executed seven hundred Cuban citizens who dared to object to his murderous regime. There are no rights in Cuba other than those granted by Fidel Castro and his henchmen. Murder and mayhem are the order of the day. The burning question is, what can be done to stop Castro? On March 17th, President Eisenhower gives his permission for the C.I.A.'s Allen Dulles and Richard Bissell to develop a small, covert, anti-Castro operation. A thousand Cuban refugees will be recruited and trained as guerrilla fighters and saboteurs. When they're ready, they'll be infiltrated back into Cuba, where they'll begin a series of raids designed to upset, and eventually overthrow, the Castro regime. In the pages of The Castro Conspiracy we'll meet the U.S. Marine and Special Forces personnel who train those men. We'll visit them in their Central American mountain and jungle training camps. Then we'll watch as the 1960 Presidential Election puts a reluctant commander-in-chief in the White House, and see the entire, carefully orchestrated, covert operation fall apart. We'll attend dozens of secret meetings conducted by the CIA, FBI, and the CFR. At those meetings we'll finally discover why Operation Trinidad, a small, easily controlled and plausible incursion, a plan that was almost certain to succeed, was turned into the over-zealous, overly ambitious, and impossible to control fiasco that the Bay of Pigs Invasion eventually became. We'll meet the Kennedy family and the Castros, along with the deadly Mafia hitmen who are recruited to kill Castro. Washington insiders and Hollywood stars will be on display. Along the way we'll watch men who willingly risk their lives to achieve success, and women who willingly use their wiles to keep them from gaining that success. We'll get to know Jack Kennedy, a man who desperately wants the Cuban Invasion to succeed, and John F. Kennedy, a president who desperately can't afford to allow it to. And we'll be present when he cancels American air support-the decision that spelled doom for the invasion and every Cuba Freedom Fighter. We'll spend three frightening days in the middle of the Bay of Pigs Invasion, and eighteen frustrating months in its aftermath-fighting and dying on the beaches-running and hiding in the swamps-sweating and suffering in the prisons. And wondering, always wondering, why the Americanos deserted us? We'll see the Cuban Missile Crisis through the eyes of the men who lived it. Part of our time will be spent in America's Oval Office-another part in Russia's Kremlin-and the rest of our days at the UN. And we'll discover how close America came to the brink of World War III during that historic October fortnight-and learn, perhaps for the first time, why the Cuban Missile Crisis was John F. Kennedy's finest hour. In the first half of 1963, we'll sit in on meetings with war profiteers and Old Guard G-men-with double-crossed Mafia chieftains and desperate Castro supporters-the four groups of men that cannot permit President Kennedy to live one day longer than necessary! We'll meet Phyllis McGuire and other "show biz folks," and we'll get to know the dupes who had starring roles in the Kennedy Assassination-Jack Ruby and Lee Harvey Oswald. We'll be present at the final and deadly negotiations with Carlos, the Jackal, when he agrees to assassinate the American President, and we'll eavesdrop when the Jackal hires three other "professional shooters," so that there will be no slip-ups in Texas. And finally, we'll be in Dallas with Jack and Jackie on that fatal Friday in November, and we'll relive the shock and sorrow of a grieving nation.

This book is dedicated to the proposition that almost anyone can acquire a basic understanding of today's technological marvels--and that, perhaps, everyone ought to. Consistently understandable (but thankfully more sober than its somewhat dippy title suggests), Who Gives a Gigabyte? offers a brisk, guided tour of the high technologies currently having, or soon to have, the greatest impact on our lives and society. These include computing and telecommunications, genetic engineering, molecular medicine, bioengineering, lasers, smart materials, alternative fuels, and green technology. If you don't know what some of these are, don't worry. Stix and Lacob leave no technical jargon undefined, and their explanations of the workings of fin-de-millennium gadgetry--microchips, compact discs, electric cars, cloned sheep--are thorough and lucid.

But just as important as the technical details are the social, political, and economic issues surrounding them, and these, too, get a clear and comprehensive airing out. In an increasingly technological world, they explain, "technological literacy ... enables us to be better citizens," helping us make informed social decisions that would otherwise be left to scientists, business leaders, and bureaucrats. Stix and Lacob don't belabor the point, though. What they promise is the essentials of a contemporary technological education, and that, no more or less, is what they deliver. --Julian Dibbell

                4 out of 5 stars I GIVE A GIGABYTE..........2002-12-24

So, how does this book work? Well, it is more like a resource book then a ýreadingý book, in my opinion. There are 10 chapters each ending with a glossary of sorts from the information presented in that chapter. Also, little ýarticlesý of interest are imbedded within the chapters. I will outline what they cover so that if you want to read itý (1) Computers 101 (thatýs the part I felt smart in) (2) Software (3) Wiring the World (so far, so good, all about what I had learned) (4) Lasers (now the heavy duty stuff started coming in, this was in depth) (5) All in the Genes. Iýll stop here for now. I want to comment on what I learned in this particular chapter that was quite difficult for me to digest.

It seemed to me that chapter 5 went on forever (well it is 141 pages long). ýWho Givesý went into great detail about DNA. I thought that all that I had learned in science in high school and college taught me a lot about DNA. Wrong! It is some very complex stuff. The part of chapter 5 that I enjoyed the most was about cloning. As Iým sure most of you know, ýin 1998, an international team of researchers at the University of Hawaii reported the successful cloning of dozens of mice.ý ýWho Givesý does mention UH and of course, the famous Dolly the cloned sheep. Only, the book also mentions that maybe Dolly wasnýt a true clone ýFor more than one year after a Scottish researcher reported the successful cloning of Dolly from the mature udder cells of a ewe, scientists were unable to repeat the feat, a development that has raised questions about whether Dolly was, in fact, a bona fide clone.ý So, all of you that were worried about your human twin walking around (was that in the Terminator?), donýt fret yet, it might not happen in your lifetime. =>

Now to continue with the chaptersý (6) Medicine and Molecules (7) Spare Parts and High-Tech Flashlights (8) Material Improvements (9) Mother Earth, Wind, and Fire (10) Clean Machines. Yes, the authors are quite comical throughout the book as their chapter titles indicate.

Some other things that peaked my interest in the book were: holographic storage, heuristics, neural networks, fuzzy logic and what the authors see as the future of technology. The final section (conclusion) of ýWho Givesý is entitled à Great Expectations. The authors note ýIt wasnýt supposed to have happened like this. The millennium, the target of so many futuristsý imaginations, has turned out to be a bust. Predictions that were to have materialized ý from space travel to Mars to nuclear mining of metals to the household robot (remember Rosie from the Jetsons?) ý have been displaced by an obsession with the time setting on a computer clock. So why do bad things happen to seemingly good ideas? The far-flung musings of the technological visionary have often derailed for simple reasons of cost and practicality. To succeed, a good technology must be useful, and it must be able to survive the gauntlet of the marketplace, as well as economic and social conditions and government policies. But even those prerequisites may not suffice. Such unpredictable elements as timing, fashion, luck and the quirks of human nature may prove equally important.ý Any one interested in buying a Segway from Amazon? I might say that supports the latter reason for technological success. The authors seem to say it bestý technology is unpredictable and no one really knows what the future holds. But is that news?

                4 out of 5 stars I learned a Gigabyte!.......2002-10-23

Who Gives a Gigabyte? A survival guide for technologically Perplexed was a perfect book for me. It is immensely readable and takes the most profoundly sophisticated concepts such as the sequencing of the human genome and quantum computing, and allows the interested, but uninitiated reader, a cursory understanding of these new technologies and how they may affect our lives in this new century. Topics included in this book are - Computing and telecommunication, bioengineering, laser technology, alternate energy sources, advanced diagnostics and imaging, and technology and the environment. This book is packed with exciting, intriguing information and concepts; the future alone will allow us to know where these new products and possibilities will take us.
For example; in the chapter on Lasers' The light Fantastic, the authors illuminate the technology of how lasers are able to provide science-fiction type warfare, optical communications, the ubiquitous bar-code scanner, DVD players and microscopic surgery. What an amazingly versatile technology!

I remember going to Disneyland's Tomorrowland in the 1960s. It was full of "glimpses of the future" with robots, people movers, rocket packs to take you where you wanted to go, and a Voyage to Mars.... And the home of the future - with machines that washed, dried and pressed your clothes all in one! This was the world of 2000! Hardly! Who Gives a Gigabyte? A survival guide for the technologically perplexed concludes by reminding us of these whimsical views of the future shaped by Leonardo da Vinci, Jules Verne and Disneyland, and leaves us with the question of why has our future not kept pace with our dreams of it? The conclusion is that interest in ambitious technology has slowed due to the basic questions of cost and practicality. "To succeed, a good technology must be useful, and it must be able to survive the gauntlet of the marketplace as well as economic and social conditions and government policies". However, the authors are quick to admit that timing, luck and the vagaries of human opinion has just as big an effect on what makes it and what does not. Technology has gotten us into the world we have today, and it appears that only more technology can get us out. I recommend this book for those of us who are intrigued with technology of all sorts, but lack the technical expertise, vocabulary and content understanding to obtain this knowledge through journals and trade magazines. Read it! What an adventure we are in for!
