An introduction to self defense.......2003-06-28
Usually, books like this concentrate on guns and tactics - essentially surviving an armed encounter. This book, however, places emphasis on avoiding such situations altogether. That is such an common-sense approach to the subject, one has to wonder why other gun writers concentrate on surviving the attack, and not avoiding it in the first place.
The book covers just about all the important issues of the subject, and there doesn't seem to be anything essential missing. However, this is such a broad subject that a hundred pages is way too little to cover it in adequate detail. Therefore, this book serves mainly as an introduction to the subject - although a very good one.

The Castro Conspiracy: The Bay of Pigs
Bruce T. Clark Manufacturer: AuthorHouse ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1418476323 |
Book Description
So far, he has seized $700,000 of American businessmen's assets. Every Mafia casino has been closed, and over a billion dollars of mob money has been confiscated. Sam Giancana and other Mafia bigwigs are extremely unhappy with Fidel. They are looking for a way to get even. So are the Americans, many of whom have been forced to flee to safety. Castro has already executed seven hundred Cuban citizens who dared to object to his murderous regime. There are no rights in Cuba other than those granted by Fidel Castro and his henchmen. Murder and mayhem are the order of the day. The burning question is, what can be done to stop Castro? On March 17th, President Eisenhower gives his permission for the C.I.A.'s Allen Dulles and Richard Bissell to develop a small, covert, anti-Castro operation. A thousand Cuban refugees will be recruited and trained as guerrilla fighters and saboteurs. When they're ready, they'll be infiltrated back into Cuba, where they'll begin a series of raids designed to upset, and eventually overthrow, the Castro regime. In the pages of The Castro Conspiracy we'll meet the U.S. Marine and Special Forces personnel who train those men. We'll visit them in their Central American mountain and jungle training camps. Then we'll watch as the 1960 Presidential Election puts a reluctant commander-in-chief in the White House, and see the entire, carefully orchestrated, covert operation fall apart. We'll attend dozens of secret meetings conducted by the CIA, FBI, and the CFR. At those meetings we'll finally discover why Operation Trinidad, a small, easily controlled and plausible incursion, a plan that was almost certain to succeed, was turned into the over-zealous, overly ambitious, and impossible to control fiasco that the Bay of Pigs Invasion eventually became. We'll meet the Kennedy family and the Castros, along with the deadly Mafia hitmen who are recruited to kill Castro. Washington insiders and Hollywood stars will be on display. Along the way we'll watch men who willingly risk their lives to achieve success, and women who willingly use their wiles to keep them from gaining that success. We'll get to know Jack Kennedy, a man who desperately wants the Cuban Invasion to succeed, and John F. Kennedy, a president who desperately can't afford to allow it to. And we'll be present when he cancels American air support-the decision that spelled doom for the invasion and every Cuba Freedom Fighter. We'll spend three frightening days in the middle of the Bay of Pigs Invasion, and eighteen frustrating months in its aftermath-fighting and dying on the beaches-running and hiding in the swamps-sweating and suffering in the prisons. And wondering, always wondering, why the Americanos deserted us? We'll see the Cuban Missile Crisis through the eyes of the men who lived it. Part of our time will be spent in America's Oval Office-another part in Russia's Kremlin-and the rest of our days at the UN. And we'll discover how close America came to the brink of World War III during that historic October fortnight-and learn, perhaps for the first time, why the Cuban Missile Crisis was John F. Kennedy's finest hour. In the first half of 1963, we'll sit in on meetings with war profiteers and Old Guard G-men-with double-crossed Mafia chieftains and desperate Castro supporters-the four groups of men that cannot permit President Kennedy to live one day longer than necessary! We'll meet Phyllis McGuire and other "show biz folks," and we'll get to know the dupes who had starring roles in the Kennedy Assassination-Jack Ruby and Lee Harvey Oswald. We'll be present at the final and deadly negotiations with Carlos, the Jackal, when he agrees to assassinate the American President, and we'll eavesdrop when the Jackal hires three other "professional shooters," so that there will be no slip-ups in Texas. And finally, we'll be in Dallas with Jack and Jackie on that fatal Friday in November, and we'll relive the shock and sorrow of a grieving nation.

Who Gives a Gigabyte?
Gary Stix , and Miriam Lacob Manufacturer: Wiley ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0471379107 |
Amazon.com
This book is dedicated to the proposition that almost anyone can acquire a basic understanding of today's technological marvels--and that, perhaps, everyone ought to. Consistently understandable (but thankfully more sober than its somewhat dippy title suggests), Who Gives a Gigabyte? offers a brisk, guided tour of the high technologies currently having, or soon to have, the greatest impact on our lives and society. These include computing and telecommunications, genetic engineering, molecular medicine, bioengineering, lasers, smart materials, alternative fuels, and green technology. If you don't know what some of these are, don't worry. Stix and Lacob leave no technical jargon undefined, and their explanations of the workings of fin-de-millennium gadgetry--microchips, compact discs, electric cars, cloned sheep--are thorough and lucid. But just as important as the technical details are the social, political, and economic issues surrounding them, and these, too, get a clear and comprehensive airing out. In an increasingly technological world, they explain, "technological literacy ... enables us to be better citizens," helping us make informed social decisions that would otherwise be left to scientists, business leaders, and bureaucrats. Stix and Lacob don't belabor the point, though. What they promise is the essentials of a contemporary technological education, and that, no more or less, is what they deliver. --Julian Dibbell

An exhilarating chronicle of the most revolutionary advancements in recent-and future-technologyCustomer Reviews:
I GIVE A GIGABYTE..........2002-12-24
It seemed to me that chapter 5 went on forever (well it is 141 pages long). ýWho Givesý went into great detail about DNA. I thought that all that I had learned in science in high school and college taught me a lot about DNA. Wrong! It is some very complex stuff. The part of chapter 5 that I enjoyed the most was about cloning. As Iým sure most of you know, ýin 1998, an international team of researchers at the University of Hawaii reported the successful cloning of dozens of mice.ý ýWho Givesý does mention UH and of course, the famous Dolly the cloned sheep. Only, the book also mentions that maybe Dolly wasnýt a true clone ýFor more than one year after a Scottish researcher reported the successful cloning of Dolly from the mature udder cells of a ewe, scientists were unable to repeat the feat, a development that has raised questions about whether Dolly was, in fact, a bona fide clone.ý So, all of you that were worried about your human twin walking around (was that in the Terminator?), donýt fret yet, it might not happen in your lifetime. =>
Now to continue with the chaptersý (6) Medicine and Molecules (7) Spare Parts and High-Tech Flashlights (8) Material Improvements (9) Mother Earth, Wind, and Fire (10) Clean Machines. Yes, the authors are quite comical throughout the book as their chapter titles indicate.
Some other things that peaked my interest in the book were: holographic storage, heuristics, neural networks, fuzzy logic and what the authors see as the future of technology. The final section (conclusion) of ýWho Givesý is entitled à Great Expectations. The authors note ýIt wasnýt supposed to have happened like this. The millennium, the target of so many futuristsý imaginations, has turned out to be a bust. Predictions that were to have materialized ý from space travel to Mars to nuclear mining of metals to the household robot (remember Rosie from the Jetsons?) ý have been displaced by an obsession with the time setting on a computer clock. So why do bad things happen to seemingly good ideas? The far-flung musings of the technological visionary have often derailed for simple reasons of cost and practicality. To succeed, a good technology must be useful, and it must be able to survive the gauntlet of the marketplace, as well as economic and social conditions and government policies. But even those prerequisites may not suffice. Such unpredictable elements as timing, fashion, luck and the quirks of human nature may prove equally important.ý Any one interested in buying a Segway from Amazon? I might say that supports the latter reason for technological success. The authors seem to say it bestý technology is unpredictable and no one really knows what the future holds. But is that news?
I learned a Gigabyte!.......2002-10-23
I remember going to Disneyland's Tomorrowland in the 1960s. It was full of "glimpses of the future" with robots, people movers, rocket packs to take you where you wanted to go, and a Voyage to Mars.... And the home of the future - with machines that washed, dried and pressed your clothes all in one! This was the world of 2000! Hardly! Who Gives a Gigabyte? A survival guide for the technologically perplexed concludes by reminding us of these whimsical views of the future shaped by Leonardo da Vinci, Jules Verne and Disneyland, and leaves us with the question of why has our future not kept pace with our dreams of it? The conclusion is that interest in ambitious technology has slowed due to the basic questions of cost and practicality. "To succeed, a good technology must be useful, and it must be able to survive the gauntlet of the marketplace as well as economic and social conditions and government policies". However, the authors are quick to admit that timing, luck and the vagaries of human opinion has just as big an effect on what makes it and what does not. Technology has gotten us into the world we have today, and it appears that only more technology can get us out. I recommend this book for those of us who are intrigued with technology of all sorts, but lack the technical expertise, vocabulary and content understanding to obtain this knowledge through journals and trade magazines. Read it! What an adventure we are in for!
