My Favorite!.......2007-05-24
I received this book as a gift from a preschool art student of mine. It's my very favorite book! The pictures are so much fun, as they are in ALL Lois Ehlert books. But I really enjoyed the story in this one as well.
Children's Literature Review.......2004-12-02
Ehlert, Lois. (2004). Hands: Growing up to be an artist. San Diego, CA: Harcourt, Inc.
This story by Lois Ehlert is a short explanation of a child looking after her role models: her mother and father. In this case, the small child is Lois Ehlert herself who wanted to grow up to be an artist, starting this wish at a very early age. Each page is a simple statement about something that her father or mother does relating to art. It is then followed by a sentence telling how she works to be like them. The story progresses and explains how, as Lois grows, so does her ability to be creative and to help her mother and father out on various projects. Whether that is in her father's shop, at her mother's craft table, or in the garden, she was always willing to practice as she grows artistically.
In this very appealing piece of literature, Ehlert creates an aesthetically appealing book. Every page in this small book is a different length, shape, and color. On each one is a different tool, scrap, or art-related item that relates to the text. With the use of different shapes and vibrant colors, Ehlert shares her artistic talents with the reader. This book would be appropriate for a preschooler or primary grade children. They would find it extremely intriguing because each page is a new discovery. It is an easy read, but one that keeps the reader interested because of the variety found with each turn of the page.
calling all artist.......2004-09-07
The book is told from the point of view of a little child. The child enjoys making things with her hands. Her parents encourage her in many ways. They let her paint, sew, build with wood, garden and lots more. With her parents support she dreams of becoming an artist when she grows up!
The book is really neat to look at. It has many foldable die cut pages that you can lift to learn more as you read.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone of any age. It is great encouragement for budding artist

Hmm - not that great!.......2006-01-30
I was really excited about this book because of the other positive reviews, but was not very impressed. A lot of them require money and resources not everyone has (if you live in Phoenix it is hard to build snowmen!). Also, depending on your own personal values of what is important in life, several of these won't matter for you.
An excellent resource!.......2002-09-05
This is an excellent resource for kids, parents, and teachers. My kids and I loved it!
A "must have" for all parents and parents-to-be.......2002-06-18
Alecia has captured the true meaning of childhood, putting together a comprehensive collection of activities that will captivate children and take their parents back to their own carefree days. A "must have" addition to the library of parents and parents-to-be!

Nurture creative potential.......2003-01-20
When you are trying to help a child develop her or his creative potential, you don't have to worry about the nature-nurture debate. Nurture is your only option. This book is a useful introduction to the developmental social psychology of creativity, and it is a good place to start for nurturing the realization of creative potential. Helping kids become more creative is a good cause, and "Growing Up Creative" is a good book.
Not my kids you don't.......2001-11-19
This book is wonderful in a number of ways, none of which, unfortunately, really get to the point of creativity. It is a light survey of the actual research results on creativity done in a very well communicated way that most people can understand. It does not distort or exaggerate points so it is above the zillion books on 6 ways to be a genius and 12 ways to think like Linus Pauling. It is comprehensive, balanced, and comprehensible. So, what is it missing? It is missing something important.
I guess, my gut reaction was--I want my kids to be about 20 times as creative as this book wants them to be. The soul of creating is what is missing. You get an academic researcher soul showing you what creating is. I would rather have a creator's soul showing me. In a perfect world you could get onto Harvard's faculty while having a creator's soul; in our actual world you have to publish little research articles and be liked by journal editors and well placed colleagues. There is too much intangible fitting in and playful insoucience where there needs to be drive, passion, persistence, immense challenge, penetrating tough fields for year after year, visiting conferences with mom and dad, playfully spotting hot and dying subfields at them, imagining what thought operation produced some new conference topic and so on. THis book is a great foundation for creating "creative" people who lack the soul and toughness to create. It is too polite in some ways.
An excellent guide for raising creative and curious kids!.......1999-01-09
I originally bought this book in 1990. It was such an excellent book I lent it to many friends and teachers. Unfortunately the last time it was not returned and I have looked everywhere for a replacement. I'm so happy to have found it. This is an easy reading book with fun and easy suggestions on how to create an atmosphere so your children will grow up to be more creative and curious about the world around them. I feel it makes raising children more fun and allows them to grow up feeling more secure about themselves. This book makes a great teacher or school gift!

Terrific ideas to help kids learn to read!.......2003-07-29
This book has many neat ideas like making a special word box with sight words with personal meaning, making personalized books, menus, learning to read nursery rhymes, etc. I think it is a good complement to any phonics instruction. It uses some Montessori games and techniques but it seems much easier to follow and you don't need to spend lots of time and money on complex props. There are extensive templates in the back that can be photocopied. There is a very good list of children's books with categories such as Wordless Books, Chants, Songs and Rhymes, and Vocabulary Controlled Books. The author does not just list the books, she actually writes a great description of each book. My children are making remarkable progress using these activities and they are having fun--I highly recommend this book!

Instructive and inspiring.......2007-04-06
They're the animating force for any kind of story. This book is a practical guide for making characters more credible and interesting.
I've been reading it with my daughter, a budding author. The text is aimed at more advanced storytellers, but even my 9-year-old has found it to be very valuable. Does your story have a catalyst character, someone who can't help but to shake things up? It ought to. This book helped us discover a catalyst and help all of our characters cope with her.
Its a great resource for writers of all sorts.

An enjoyable read.......2006-11-09
As an avid reader of history, I found this to be a very good start for Mr. Patton. He brings to life a real american hero focusing on both the positive and the negatives of his life. Colt Terry was definitely a hero, serving his country in multiple wars and spending five years under fire. His story needed telling and if you enjoy and learn from history, you will enjoy learning about him.
Mr. Patton does a great job helping the reader understand life in the Korean conflict as well as Vietnam. My only critique is that i would have enjoyed more detail and this book should probably have been a bit longer as a result.
In conclusion, if you have enjoyed Ambrose then this book should also be sitting on your shelves.
A True American Hero and Patriot.......2005-10-26
Colt Terry is my uncle, and I grew up hearing most of the stories in this book. If you want to know almost first hand what our soldiers were doing in most of the overses conflicts, police actions and wars; then this is the book for you. Colt recalls with great detail people, places, and times where he was in great danger and political turmoil.
He truely is a real modern day hero and I hope that many of our service men and women read this book. I think that it teaches us that people in our military do sacrifice a lot of their lives for our freedom and this book shows what it was like to fight for that freedom.
You can read this book story by story or through its entirety and never get tired of it!
Also, Colt Terry died in September of 2005. His obiturary is in the Orlando Sentinal if you would like to read more of what his life was like.
