Customer Reviews:
Because childlike faith matters..........2007-08-30
I love reading about methods that have withstood the test of time for the Christian journey. The spiritual disciplines are a methodolgy that has withstood the test of "how to find a richer life with God" since the time Jesus lived on earth. Certainly if Jesus needed to practice times of solitude, silence, fasting, simplicity, worship, service....and so on, we need to position ourselves in the same way.
What I love about "Habits of a Child's Heart" is that Valerie and Marti believe children are not exempt from the richness of a deep connection with God. Their book is not only rare in it's class, its proof that children can and need to have a plan for transformation that includes the spiritual holy habits. The proof that this works is in the pudding of what I have experienced with the children at my own church. I saw many of them taste God through these simple yet tangible ways of fiinding God's heart.
The book covers explaining, teaching, and practicing each of the 12 mentioned dsiciplines and breaks the teaching down into early childhood, middle and adolescent categories.
Two added goodies come at the conclusion of the book with an epilogue that includes a very helpful chart of the balanced life. Following that in the appendix is a master calendar that is so helpful for a person who seeks to have balance in a muti-task culture.
This book is a treasured resource for parents who want to teach a balanced and intentional journey of discipleship to their children as well as for Sunday school or private school teachers and administrators. It can be used as a resource, devotional tool, supplement to cirriculum and even a nice way to introduce the disciplines to a church at large. I highly reccommend it!
Book didn't connect with me..........2007-06-26
There was just something about this book that I didn't connect with. The idea was to take Richard Foster's classic Celebration of Discipline and present those principles in a book for parents who wanted to teach these spiritual disciplines to their children. While the concept is wonderful, the book left much to be desired. I really think it was that I didn't connect with the writers themselves and how they practically put into practice the spiritual disciplines. I didn't connect with their examples - to be blunt, it seemed to be a book written by homeschoolers who are just detached from the realities of life. Now, I'm not sure that is an accurate picture, but that was my impression.
The book was full of incredible quotes from a wide variety of individuals - and the overall concept and premise of the book is an excellent idea. We do, as parents, need to work to teach our children the importance of the spiritual disciplines and we do need suggestions on how to make them practical for children of all ages, from elementary age to high school. So, even though I didn't connect with the two authors and their examples, I did walk away with some valuable tools and ideas on how to implement the spiritual disciplines with my own children.
Unfortunately, I don't feel like I can personally recommend this book highly to others and that's a disappointment. Richard Foster recommends the book and I do believe that the authors were true to his original classic in their version, but I walked away from this book more focused on the things I didn't like than the things that I did.
Habits of a Child's Heart Review.......2006-04-24
This book is incredibly insightful for those with or without children. As an adult who does not have children, but who looks forward to the day when I can share this book with them, I appreciated the way Valerie and Marty presented the material to reach adults and children alike. Anyone who has the privilege of raising a child or working with children, and is looking for thought-provoking and wholesome ways to communicate the spiritual disciplines with them, will greatly benefit from this book. Teaching these habits to the young is a powerful way to lay a foundation that cannot be shaken.
Book Description
This lyrical and articulate mix of the practical and the poetic combines personal story, wildland ecology, restoration gardening practices, and native plant horticulture. Judith Lowry's voice and experiences make a rich matrix for essays that include discussions of wildflower gardening, the ecology of native grasses, wildland seed-collecting, principles of natural design, and plant/animal interactions. Though this book is based on California gardens, readers from all parts of the country will be inspired and informed by these examples of gardening to include "the larger garden beyond the fence."
Gardening with a Wild Heart promises to be a classic for lovers of nature writing, gardeners, bioregionalists, and students and professionals in horticulture, landscape design, and ecological restoration.

Not enough.......2005-04-12
I was dissapointed when I recieved this book in the mail. I was expecting a native gardening guide book, with perhaps some photos of native plants, descriptions of how natives can be used in the garden and such. Instead I recieved a book warning of the enormous dangers of planting exotic, non native species in one's back yard. The book is heart felt and well written. If you are not convinced that planting natives is the way to go, you will be after reading this book. Unfortunatly, you probably won't be much further along in knowing how or which or where.
A book every California gardener should read.......2004-01-11
A Californian living overseas, I happened to find this book while looking for ideas for a piece of property I own in California. Initially I had "cottage garden" in mind; later, my thinking evolved to more exotic tropical plants. This wonderful book was the first step in my complete conversion to the native plant movement. California is an ecological "island" with an incredible richness of native plants: 6,000 species, of which something like 2,000 live nowhere else. Yet these have been decimated by exotic weeds, development and large-scale agriculture. We should be proud of the native California plants that are now prized by landscapers and gardeners all over the world: the redwood, douglas fir, monterey pine, lilac, and all wildflowers especially the poppy, our State Flower (to name but a few). Yet despite the growing momentum of the native plant movement in the state, many gardeners are indifferent to the debate.
Look for the tufted 6-foot stalks of pampas grass as you drive around California: this aggressive invader from Peru is still being planted by gardeners and landscapers. Consider that eight million acres in the state (and growing) are covered with yellow star thistle, another exotic weed. Aggressive non-native plants out-compete natives (even to the point of extinction) and contribute to the decline of the environment, often in the form of soil erosion.
The most important lesson from this thought-provoking book is that we are interconnected, and the decisions we take on our postage-stamp properties affect the entire environment. We can make a difference. What we do on our little plots can do a lot to restore the ecological well-being of the entire state. As we see the birds and other animals - creatures that evolved specifically for our native flora - return to reclaim the land, parcel by parcel, we can say we have done something positive for the state of California.
Not Just About Gardening.......2001-11-11
"Gardening With a Wild Heart" is a wonderful book. Even if you could care less about gardening or native plants, it is still a great read. There is so much in here about different ways of life, past and present, in unique Marin County. Open it to any page and you will find fascinating information on a wide variety of subjects, from actual recipes, to native American philsophy. This book fascinated me for hours, and that rarely happens for me with non-fiction books.
Transformational!.......2001-06-11
I am new to gardening. I was initially seduced by the pictures of California gardens in Sunset magazine. Over the long term, I saw its approach to be only about style and appearance and pleasing the humans. This book on the other hand connects backyard gardening with the wild, with wildlife, and gave me a reason for gardening: for the denizens of the garden -- the birds, bees, butterflies, insects, and squirrels. If you are looking for a how-to book, get Marjorie Schmidt's Gardening with California Native Plants. The definitive California native plant picture identification book hasn't been published, but you can get a lot out of Vern Yadon's Wildflowers of Monterey County.
Great book, but missing pictures for identification.......2000-04-11
I live in Southern California, and have begun to take an interest in planting more native species in my yard and garden. I picked this book up at the Getty Museum after visiting their beautiful gardens.
This bug is full of important information, and taught me (to my chagrin) that I had been guilty of planting lots of invasive alien species in my yard.
Armed with a new resolve to "go native" I set about trying to find and identify the many native plants she describes in her book. Unfortunately, the book has only a limited set of color plates showing some native flowers. And even those images generally show multiple plants, with a description such as "california poppie, five-spot, and baby blue eyes near coyote scrub, California fescue and native bunch grass". While this is helpful, I was unable to tell which plant was which (aside from the poppies).
To use this book to its fullest, you need a good pictorial guide to California plants. Unfortunately I don't know of one. Hopefully a more knowledgable reader can point me in the right direction.

The Grace of God.......2004-09-01
This book would be an encouragement to any young woman. It is a reminder of the personal intimate relationship God desires with His children. I also found it to be a testament to the goodness and grace of God. Glenda also wrote a book about her very difficult childhood and how the Lord sustained her called Glenda's Story. With Love from a Mother's Heart gives hope for others who have suffered deeply that God can bring them to a place of healing and maturity.

Definite must buy!.......2007-05-30
Love Elaine's newest book! Especially found her color bars very user friendly. They have made me my own color expert. Timing could not be better as we are renovating, remodeling and redecorating a historic cabin in Culpeper, Virgina. Color bars have been terrifically helpful.
a reader.......2005-02-14
Elaine Ryan's Color Bars were so easy to use, I can't believe someone didn't think of this before! I'm clueless when it comes to matching colors, and this foolproof method she developed easily guided me through the process of redecorating my home. I find that I can use them when matching colors in my wardrobe, too. Her book, Color Your Life, took me on a journey of discovering which colors I wanted to live with, and then once I discovered those colors, the Color Bars, showed me how to match the colors correctly. It would have been very expensive to make yet another color matching mistake!
The Best How-To Book For The Home Decorator.......2004-08-19
Elaine Ryan's book is an easy to read how-to book on decorating your home or office with color you can live with and enjoy.
It gives you tips, both practical and psychological to help you use color in decorating your home. I particularly enjoyed the subtle manner in which Ms. Ryan urges you to free yourself and take command of your life, a life that should be surrounded by color.
Don't waste your money.......2003-12-20
I was very excited about receiving the book and the color bars. Found BOTH to be totally useless! Colors are very very limited. None matched the many colors in my home at all. The book was also not helpful at all.
Don't waste your money on this junk!
a really good and different reference guide.......2002-07-15
As we are presently remodelling our home, I have been referring to this book quite a lot. It is full of interesting ideas and good tips not only about color schemes. I have given it 4 stars because I don't agree with everything the author says but most of her views are very interesting and innovative. The color bars are extremely useful and do take the guesswork out of what goes with what. I never realized how many tones and shades each color(hue) has and how certain of them really don't go together. I would recommend this book for anyone renovating or refurbishing his/her home.

Customer Reviews:
I highly recommend this wonderful book on hospitality!.......1998-10-26
This is one of my favorite books. It is a WONDERFUL book on hospitality. A few years ago I ran a Ladies' Christian Book Club and tried to order copies of this book for it. I was very upset to be told it was no longer in print and none of my local Christian bookstores had any in stock. I found it "by accident" when I went to see Emilie Barnes and I was so thrilled to see that it is available again as a revised 1998 edition! I wish all women would read this book - it would make such a difference in the world!!! Please buy a copy and finish it in time for the upcoming holidays - I'm sure you'll be glad you did! Great Study of the Life of Franz Sigel.......2000-06-01
A very enjoyable look at one of the greatest German Americans involved with the Civil War. Tracks his early days to his time as a commander in the Union Army. Engle provides the reader with a new insight into Sigel's life, with a fresh style that never disappoints. A book that is long over due and finally pays tribute to a forgotten figure of the Civil War. A great addition to a Civil War collection, especially if you are interested in Civil War biographies.

The Russian Empire and the World, 1700-1917: The Geopolitics of Expansion and Containment
ASIN: 0195161009 |
Book Description
At its height, the Russian empire covered eleven time zones and stretched from Scandinavia to the Pacific Ocean. Arguing against the traditional historical view that Russia, surrounded and threatened by enemies, was always on the defensive, John P. LeDonne contends that Russia developed a long-term strategy not in response to immediate threats but in line with its own expansionist urges to control the Eurasian Heartland. LeDonne narrates how the government from Moscow and Petersburg expanded the empire by deploying its army as well as by extending its patronage to frontier societies in return for their serving the interests of the empire. He considers three theaters on which the Russians expanded: the Western (Baltic, Germany, Poland); the Southern (Ottoman and Persian Empires); and the Eastern (China, Siberia, Central Asia). In his analysis of military power, he weighs the role of geography and locale, as well as economic issues, in the evolution of a larger imperial strategy. Rather than viewing Russia as peripheral to European Great Power politics, LeDonne makes a powerful case for Russia as an expansionist, militaristic, and authoritarian regime that challenged the great states and empires of its time.

Book Description
"Biodiversity." As argument over environmental and conservation policy grows more heated in California and throughout the nation, the term has become a buzzword. But what does biodiversity really mean? What really threatens it? Why should we care? In Our Own Hands offers a readable, scientifically sound view of California's biological diversity and what must be done to preserve it. The book will be an invaluable resource for environmental and natural resource specialists, educators, and general readers.
Local and global forces threaten California's wetlands, dunes, oak woodlands, and riparian forest habitats--all declining habitats in a rapidly urbanizing, culturally heterogeneous, and politically turbulent state. Always a bellwether, California will be a model for the rest of the United States in its scientific and political solutions to conservation problems. This book proposes the first steps toward a unified national conservation policy for the twenty-first century.
