Reimagining Indians: Native Americans through Anglo Eyes, 1880-1940
Sherry L. Smith Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0195157273 |
Book Description
Reimagining Indians investigates a group of Anglo-American writers whose books about Native Americans helped reshape Americans' understanding of Indian peoples at the turn of the twentieth century. Hailing from the Eastern United States, these men and women traveled to the American West and discovered "exotics" in their midst. Drawn to Indian cultures as alternatives to what they found distasteful about modern American culture, these writers produced a body of work that celebrates Indian cultures, religions, artistry, and simple humanity. Although these writers were not academically trained ethnographers, their books represent popular versions of ethnography. In revealing their own doubts about the superiority of European-American culture, they sought to provide a favorable climate for Indian cultural survival in a world indisputably dominated by non-Indians. They also encouraged notions of cultural relativism, pluralism, and tolerance in American thought. For the historian and general reader alike, this volume speaks to broad themes of American cultural history, Native American history, and the history of the American West.

Checkpoint Controls and Cancer, Vol. 2: Activation and Regulation Protocols (Methods in Molecular Biology (Cloth))
Axel H., Ed. Schonthal Manufacturer: Humana Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1588295001 |
Book Description
Prestigious researchers from ten different countries present readily reproducible experimental protocols to study the molecular components of checkpoint controls and their regulation. Described in step-by-step detail, these cutting-edge techniques offer novel approaches, such as the use of genome databases and siRNA, to analyzing how cells of the human body can escape proper surveillance to grow into a tumor. Additional experimental methods are provided for the manipulation of checkpoint pathways and the analysis of the resulting consequences for the cellular phenotype. An earlier first volume, Reviews and Model Systems, comprehensively reviews the complexities of checkpoint controls and the model systems needed to study them.

Hedgehog Signaling Protocols (Methods in Molecular Biology (Cloth))
Jamila I., Ed. Horabin Manufacturer: Humana Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 158829692X |
Book Description
In both vertebrates and invertebrates, Hedgehog signaling regulates the development of the tissues and structures of the body. In addition, many cancers and diseases arise as a result of misregulation of the pathway, which makes it an incredibly important system to understand. This volume examines various methods used in the analysis of the Hedgehog signaling pathway, bringing together different lines of analyses into one accessible and comprehensive text. This volume provides a single source for investigators, presenting several different experimental approaches, which are all varied and broad in nature, as well as procedures for a variety of different model systems. Researchers will find this volume to be an invaluble tool as they work towards deeper understanding of the underlying molecular events that the Hedgehog signaling pathway regulates.

MAP Kinase Signaling Protocols (Methods in Molecular Biology (Cloth))
Rony, Ed. Seger Manufacturer: Humana Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0896039986 |
Book Description
An outstanding collection of both classic and cutting-edge techniques for the detection and measurement of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling cascades. The protocols includes methods for the determination of the subcellular localization of these components, the structural and biophysical analysis of the components, and identification of novel components of known and unknown signaling cascades. Additional methods examine the upstream mechanisms of activation of MAPK cascades by various receptors, the mechanisms involved in the down regulation of the MAPK cascades, and identification of targets of the MAPK cascades. A number of techniques use inhibitors in research on MAPK and transgenic mice for studies of MAPK signaling. The techniques offer biochemists, cell biologists, physicians, and biotechnologists all the essential laboratory techniques needed in to conduct productive studies of MAPK signaling in health and disease, in measuring the influence of drugs, and in a broad range of experimental systems.
