Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not for the easily Frightened!.......2005-07-14

My husband and I recently decided to begin trying to have a baby. We decided to buy this book along with a couple others so that we could prepare. This was one of the 1st books that I read and after about the first half, I was convinced that I would be infertile and unable to have a baby. Some of the information is very good but a good proportion of the book covers the plethora of things that can cause a woman to be infertile and then all of the latest medical treatments that can help an infertile woman get pregnant. This might be a great book for the woman who has been trying for a while without success but for me, I finished it and was scared to death!

3 out of 5 stars Overkill!.......2003-10-29

This book provides some wonderful information, in a very easy-to-digest format. The section on the pre-conception exam is great- you'll know what to expect, and how to make sure your doctor isn't overlooking something important. I also liked the attention on male fertility issues, which are often ignored. However, the first half of the book is esentially "you could be infertile, and not even realize it!" It describes the fertility problems caused by cysts, endometriosis, etc., and lists the very common symptoms (gee, who hasn't had headaches or heavy periods?) and stresses how frequently women have these diseases without realizing it. Halfway through the book, I was convinced I had every problem listed. The authors' approach may be helpful if you're having difficulty getting pregnant and want to educate yourself on possible causes, but I think for most people it's really overkill.

5 out of 5 stars Well..........2001-07-07

Ordered it....1 week later it came, I opened the box while my wife was doing the ept exam, two lines appeared, never read the book. One month later, gave it to my brother since his wife is trying to get pregnant. She says its pretty good.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely informative..........2001-02-27

My husband and I purchased this book while we were undergoing fertility treatments for "unexplained" infertility. The doctors had no other explanation for why two otherwise healthy people would be having problems conceiving naturally. I found this book full of information in laymen terms without all the medical jargon which can be boring and hard to understand. I wanted to be a better informed patient and be able to make responsible decisions regarding what treatments we were going to have. Getting Pregnant tells us about environmental factors, personal habits, and all the treatments that's available as well as general information for couples who are not experiencing infertility. I was surprised to read some of the unfavorable comments left by other readers. It is extremely draining physically and emotionally having to deal with infertility and everyone should take what they read with a grain of salt. I am happy to say that we had a beautiful baby girl while waiting for an IVF cycle and I guess that's where the "unexplained" comes in again. In all this book is well worth the read.

3 out of 5 stars Would not recomend this couples just beginning to try.......2000-09-10

I thought the book was ok but not really geared for couples just starting to try to conceive as it claims to be. There are a few helpful suggestions on baby making but most of the info is about the many things that can possibly be wrong with you or your spouse to cause you NOT to conceive and about medical treatments available.

        Book Description

At D-Day's end, the Canadians, who had landed on Juno Beach, were six miles inland — the deepest penetration achieved by Allied forces on this infamous day. But every soldier on this front line knew worse was yet to come. For in the darkness the Germans were massing, intent on throwing them back to sea. With dramatic intensity, Holding Juno re-creates the ensuing battle and ultimate Canadian triumph and includes fascinating first-person soldier accounts as well as photos and maps.

On par with Mark Z's other books, particularly Juno. A very, very important addition to any WWII history collection, especially since this subject is overlooked in so many ways. Very refreshing.

5 out of 5 stars An Important Contribution to D-Day Literature.......2006-01-11

It is well known that the invasion at Omaha beach was the worst. What isn't nearly as well known or perhaps appreciated is that the Canadians going ashore at Juno suffered almost as high a percentage of casualties as did the Americans at Omaha (relatively speaking Sword, Gold, and Utah) were pretty mild. Further, the Canadians even reached their assigned targets for D-day in some places (the only ones to do so). The story of the Canadians landing at Juno is told in Mr. Zuehlke's 'Juno Beach' (still available).

'Holding Juno' picks up at midnight, the morning of June 7th where the Germans are massing for an attack to throw the invaders back into the sea, and the Canadians are fighting to work further inland and to consolidate the invasion beaches (at midnight there was still a gap between Juno and Sword).

This book ends on June 12. By then neither the Canadians or any of the other divisions that assaulted the beaches on June 6th were capable of more than holding actions. But by then 326,547 men had landed and the battle to hold the beaches was done.

This book is an important contribution to the story of D-Day.

          Book Description

Canadian troops landing on Juno Beach on June 6th, 1944 were fulfilling the promise made by their government in 1939 'to take up arms against an aggressor state whose policy threatened to destroy free government everywhere'. It was a noble cause about which the Canadian people remain extremely proud. Canadian 3rd Division, assaulting the Normandy beaches to help liberate the French people from Nazi tyranny, numbered many descendants of European forebears. Famous Canadian formations with European antecedents such as the New Brunswick Regiment, La Regiment de la Chaudiere, the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders and the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada overcame chaos on the beaches and endured heavy casualties. Their determination and drive saw them progress further inland than troops from any other of the Allied beachheads. The Juno Beach landings were just the start of the Canadians' long struggle to Germany and victory. In the coming days they would face some of Hitler's toughest troops, including 12 SS-Panzer Division 'Hitlerjugend', in a war of ideals where duty faced fanaticism and surrender often led to massacre. Ken Ford takes the reader back to the battlefields of June 1944, revisiting the scenes of the fighting in the green fields and lanes of Normandy, identifying the places that remain from the war and remembering the young men who fell in the service of Canada and the Allied cause.

          Book Description

Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy, was the greatest sea-borne military operation in history. At the heart of the invasion and key to its success were the landings of British 50th Division on Gold Beach and Canadian 3rd Division on Juno Beach. Not only did they provide the vital link between the landings of British 3rd Division on Sword Beach and the Americans to the west on Omaha, they would be crucial to the securing of the beachhead and the drive inland to Bayeux and Caen. In the fourth D-Day volume Ken Ford details the assault that began the liberation of Nazi-occupied Europe.

          3 out of 5 stars A Decent Summary.......2002-12-10

This is the second volume in the Osprey Campaign series' detailed examination of the D-Day landings. In this tightly packaged volume, author Ken Ford offers considerable detail on the less well-known British and Canadian landings on Gold and Juno beaches on 6 June 1944. Overall, the volume provides a decent campaign narrative combined with a high graphic quality in terms of maps and photographs. This volume is not quite as good as the first volume in this series, which covered the landing on Sword Beach, and this may cause some readers apprehension as to what to expect from the remaining two volumes on D-Day.

Gold & Juno Beaches begins in standard Osprey format with short sections on the origin of the battle, a campaign chronology, opposing leaders, opposing armies and opposing plans. The author provides five 2-D maps (German defenses on Gold and Juno Beaches, Allied landings on Gold and Juno, and the situation at midnight on D-Day) and three 3-D "Bird's Eye View" maps (the British 69th Brigade landing on Gold, the Canadian 3rd Brigade landing on Juno, and the Battle of Villers-Bocage). The two very detailed maps of the German defenses are particularly useful and interesting. Three battle scenes are included: HMS Ajax bombarding the German defenses, the landing on Gold and the German evacuation of Ardenne Abbey on 8 June). The author provides 28 pages on the Gold landings, 22 pages on Juno and ten pages on the week after the landings. A detailed order of battle for both sides is also provided. The bibliography is overly succinct and includes several out-dated books on the subject while ignoring several more recent and worthwhile books, such as Robert Kershaw's Piercing the Atlantic Wall.

The author displays a bit of a jingoistic tone in this volume, beginning with his suggestion that the Allied units had "sky-high" morale and superb training, whereas the German defenders lacked these attributes. Certainly any comparison of units like the veteran British 50th Division against the third-string German 716th Coastal Infantry Division will find the defenders at a qualitative and quantitative disadvantage. However, Ford glosses over the fact that most German units were liberally sprinkled with combat veterans and only the static units were lower in morale and tactical competence. The panzer, panzer grenadier and mobile infantry in reserve were certainly equal to the British units in tactical competence, and possessed solid, reliable equipment. Furthermore, the author tends to denigrate the performance of the 716th Division on D-Day, yet this weak unit managed to delay five Allied divisions for the bulk of the day and fulfilled its intended role. Ford's description of the collapse of the German "crust" defense around mid-day on D-Day as a rout does not ring true, since if it was a rout why did the British and Canadians fail to reach their D-Day objectives? It was not the failure of the coastal defense units - which were always viewed as expendable - but the failure to promptly deploy mobile reserves that ultimately compromised the German Atlantic Wall.

Ford's discussion of the landings is decent, but there is not much analysis. For example, the British landed very little infantry in the first assault waves and relied on armored engineering vehicles to breach the main obstacle belt, which was the exact opposite of the American methods employed on Omaha and Utah. The British methods were highly successful and kept their losses at an acceptable level. Ford also really only addresses the assault waves and spends little effort discussing the follow-up forces and the development of the beachheads. Nevertheless, readers can easily follow the action using this volume's text and maps.

          Book Description

On June 6, 1944, the greatest armada in history stood off Normandy and the largest amphibious invasion ever began as 107,000 men aboard 6,000 ships pressed toward the coast. Among them were 14,500 Canadians, who were to land on a five-mile-long stretch of rocky ledges fronted by a dangerously exposed beach. Drawing on personal diaries as well as military records, Juno Beach: Canada's D-Day Victory — June 6, 1944 dramatically depicts Canada's pivotal contribution to the critical Allied battle of World War II.

5 out of 5 stars As good as the Canadian troops it is about.......2006-11-10

Excellent account of the most impressive effort of D-Day. Enough of this Omaha Beach chatter! Here is the real story of D-Day, told in detail heretofore unseen.

          4 out of 5 stars Interesting read.......2004-09-09

Juno is a highly detailed account of the Normandy invasion, on all three fronts, air, land, and sea. Its focus is on the Canadian participation of units and their actions on June 6th. Normally, Canadian participation in this pivotal World War 2 battle is usually glossed over by other historians, if mentioned at all.

Leading up to the invasion, there are chapters on how different units trained and prepared, from the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion and its role with the British 6th Airborne Division, to the minesweepers that swept lanes into the beaches for the assault craft, to the fighter and bomber units that blasted the beach defences on Juno beach.

By the mid-point of the book, units of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division are steaming for the beaches. The battle for all 5 sectors of the beach are pretty interesting and filled with moments of courage and bravado, as men struggle up the sand and rush machinegun nests and bunkers.

There are several sections detailing German response and the opinions of the commanders of the 716th Infantry, the 21st Panzer, and other units facing the Canadians. These were interesting but I would have liked more detail.

There are also interviews with veterans who actually fought there as well as information from government archives. The only thing I found lacking in this book that I had enjoyed in Zuehlke's Ortona book was the anecdotes and quirky little stories that punctuated that volume.

It should be noted that this book only details the events leading up to and the day of June 6th. The following battles for Caen and the Falaise Gap are not part of this book. All in all, it kept me interested and I found it hard to put down.

Creating memories through images such was the motto of the war correspondents in the armies of their nations. This souvenir album is a simple pedagogical tool recalling, in this case, the Canadian Landings on the beach code-named JUNO by the Allied planners of D-Day, June 6th, 1944. It is also a moving collection of moments of tension, combat, drama and victory, often blended together and immortalized by the lenses of those war correspondents for posterity. It is also a stroll through all of those welcoming coastline villages, which stand looking towards the future, but unable to forget the past.

                              Book Description

Adele Marion Fielde, born in 1839, was a teacher, an evangelist, a social activist, scientist, lexicographer, writer and lecturer. As an American missionary in China she became a local teacher and evangelist, struggling to reconcile her Baptist upbringing with her restless intellect. This book provides an in-depth biographical study of the life of this remarkable woman, exploring her impact on her contemporary society, and her abiding influence on the scientific and academic communities to the present day.

                              5 out of 5 stars what a Woman!.......2002-07-06

My thanks to Dr. Leonard Warren for this absorbing biography of a woman I personally had never heard of and who is, I believe, unfamiliar to most readers. Set against the intellectual, religious, and scientific climate of the second half of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th, this recounting of the life of the awesomely brilliant Adele Marion Fielde should be required reading for anyone interested in such wide-ranging subjects as: missionary work in China, political and cultural life in western and eastern Europe, the early feminist movement, late-19th-century scientific thought and research....and more, more, more. And then there is the fascinating Ms. Fielde herself, a woman of extraordinary intellect, humanism, insight and energy, who not only survived an extraordinary tragedy but turned enforced self-reliance into the driving force of a most remarkable life. Why doesn't someone turn it into a movie?
