5 out of 5 stars Finest example of aviation hystory publication.......2007-02-03

Excellent book. Comprehensive research, good photographs and scale drawings, exhaustive list of Austro-Hungarian aircraft designed, produced and flown during the First World War. Authors decided to remove colour profiles from the second edition on the basis on doubts about colour interpretation. Nevertheless, this book is amongst the finest examples of aviation history publications.

5 out of 5 stars The Anatomy of Failure.......2005-05-21

Why buy an expensive book about the air force of a country that doesn't exist anymore and was already in a state of terminal decline when the Wright Brothers first flew? For one thing, the Dual Monarchy produced a surprising number of airplane designs with interesting technical quirks (like a V-12 engine mounted sideways and driving outboard propellers from both ends of the crankshaft). For another, it had several brilliant minds in its technical branch (like von Karman who later created the Jet Propulsion Lab).

But as a student of technical and managerial failure in aerospace, I found the most interesting parts of this book to be the discussions of the disastrous mistakes that the Habsburg bureaucrats made in design and production of aircraft. Just about any mistake that could be made was made, sometimes several times -- and in the space of only about 8 years.

Politicalization of procurement decisions. Incompetent design by Herr Doctorprofessors obsessed with numerical theory. Shoddy workmanship by conscripted peasants. Blind conservatism of an entrenched aristocracy. Monopoly capitalists organizing a secret cartel. Ethnic quotas in the allocation of contracts and scarce materials. This book is practically a text on how to wreck a whole industry and loose a war. Everybody at NASA should read it.

Book Description

The part played in the Great War by the armies of the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy is little known to English-speakers, perhaps because 1918 saw the complete destruction of the Empire. Yet it was of great importance, providing nearly all Central Powers forces on the Italian front, huge numbers on the Russian front, the Balkans and even a contingent in Turkey and Palestine. This second volume describes this complex organisation from the accession of Emperor Karl I in November 1916, through the victory of Caporetto and failure of the Piave offensive, to the final Armistice. The text is supported by tables and insignia charts, and illustrated with rare photographs and colourful plates.

4 out of 5 stars The Austro-Hungarian Forces in World War I.......2006-06-22

The Austro-Hungarian Forces in World War I (2) Osprey publication just touches on highlights of the kuk is well written and researched. I enjoyed the photos from the archives and from the authors collection. Nice rank, insignia as well as unit organization charts. I spent a decade in Central Europe studying militaria, visiting actual kuk WWI battle sites, studying kuk unit forces and visiting actual kuk fortifications throughout the old empire. I specialize in military aviation in the First War, I disagree on several of the dates in the very brief aviation section of the book but other then that, excellent work.

4 out of 5 stars A Valuable Addition.......2004-01-25

Dr Peter Jung, late of the Austrian War Archives, completed his second volume for Osprey on the Austro-Hungarian forces in the First World War. Together, these two volumes, while thin, shed much light on the heretofore-neglected Austro-Hungarian troops who played such a large role in the First World War.

Dr. Jung begins with an introduction concerning the new Austrian emperor and then provides a 7-page summary of major operations in 1916-1918. He then covers army reorganization in the last two years of the war, uniforms and equipment, and a 9-page section on specialist troops (storm troopers, mountain troops, searchlight troops, gas warfare, auto troops, armored cars, army aviation, naval troops, chaplains and female troops. A final section includes information on secondary fronts (the Orientkorps in Palestine and the Western front, which includes two very detailed orders of battle (AH units on Turkish fronts and AH troops on the Western Front in October 1918). The color plates consist of: Austrian senior leaders (Emperor Karl I, FM Conrad and Colonel-General Boroevic); specialist troops (dog handlers, dismounted cavalry, mountain troops); military chaplains (Catholic, Jewish, Muslim and Protestant); naval troops; storm troops; aviators; ethnic troops (Albanian, Ukrainian); and odds-and-ends troops in late 1918. While the color plates are excellent, as usual, some of the choices (such as an entire plate on chaplains) are questionable and it would have been desirable to have at least one color plate of Austrian troops in action. Finally, the author's 2-page bibliography is very detailed and should prove very useful for any readers wishing to pursue further research on this topic. The only serious omissions in both volumes are the lack of any real discussion of Austrian tactical or operational level doctrine, and the lack of any first-person accounts.

There is a great deal of specialized information about the Austro-Hungarian army in both this volume and its predecessor, making them valuable commodities for anyone interested in a better understanding of the First World War. Given the constraints of the Osprey Men-at-Arms series, Dr. Jung made a commendable effort and these two volumes should be on the bookshelf of all serious students of the Great War.

5 out of 5 stars The Forgotten Many.......2003-11-17

I am writing this having a) had the book for some time now, and b) in response to the previous review.

I found the book particularly informative - especially after "Armies in the Balkans 1914-18" - and, some minor details apart - a reasonable review of the Habsburg armies in the first half of the First World War. Re. the uniform plates, I agree entirely that they are excellent and well worth the purchase price of the book alone.

However, although the previous reviewer highlights the, shall we say, negative spin of apparent lack of success of the kuk armee in 1914 and 1916 and, to a lesser extent 1915, the fact remains that - with German assistance admittedly - the Habsburg armies remained in the field in fighting order until almost the last. Indeed, given that Austro-Hungarian military spending pre 1914 was by far the lowest of the Great Powers (which includes Italy I am told) and that the German Empire was the great, powerful "new kid on the block" (from, bear in mind, 1871), the Habsburg armies' ability to survive deserves recognition. Given that the brash, new, powerful German Empire was outlived by the arthritic, "ramshackle" Austro- Hungarian state (held together by the army) for a mere matter of weeks in 1918, there must be a case for some recognition. PLUS, Imperial Russia knocked out of the war in 1917 in part due to the (admittedly) supporting role played by Austria-Hungary (NB not Austro-Hungary!). This is an old army worthy of attention. I for one think Peter Jung's book is generally well balanced and look forward to part two.

3 out of 5 stars Decent, but Uneven in Places.......2003-07-31

The Osprey Men-at-Arms series recent volumes on various armies of the First World War, while brief, have helped to shed some light on the more neglected military forces that participated in that conflict. Dr. Peter Jung, who works at the Austrian War Archives, brings his professional knowledge to bear in the first of two volumes on the Austro-Hungarian army in the First World War. The first volume covers the period 1914-1916. Overall, this volume is decent but not great, while the color plates make this volume an essential purchase for any student of the First World War.

After a short introduction, Dr. Jung has a brief section on the organization of the Austro-Hungarian army, followed by eight pages on major operations in 1914-1916. A 26-page section on uniforms, equipment, the branches and volunteer units comprises the bulk of the volume. Most welcome is the author's inclusion of a map of corps districts in 1914, a detailed order of battle for August 1914, a chart of rank insignia, and lists of the infantry and cavalry regiments in 1914. These charts alone make this volume useful. As usual, the color plates are the main effort in this thin volume and these include: officers in 1914, infantry in 1914, cavalry in 1914, winter uniforms, mountain troops, specialist troops, foreign volunteers and Austrian troops serving in Gallipoli and Palestine. While the Austro-Hungarian Army may not have won many battles, they certainly had some of the most attractive uniforms of any combatant in the First World War.

Dr. Jung does pack a fair amount of information into this 48-page format, but his coverage is sometimes uneven. The discussion of the organization of Austrian divisions is overly succinct; although he notes that the Austrian divisions had only 46 artillery pieces compared to 50-72 for everybody else, it is unclear what size weapons were in their divisional artillery (plus he notes that Austrians had six gun batteries, but 46 is not divisible by 6, so the organization is unclear). Dr. Jung also pretty much ignores the Austrian artillery contribution on the Western Front in 1914, but then gets rather blabby about the minor operations in Albania and Palestine. Nor is there any discussion of tactical or operational doctrines.

There's also an obvious bias in these pages - not unexpected from someone working in the Austrian archives - to sugarcoat some of the worst aspects of this misfortune-plagued army. Dr. Jung's description of the campaigns in Serbia and Galicia make it sound like the Austrians did pretty well and were only occasionally forced to give up some ground. The author admits that the 1916 Brusilov Offensive did some damage but downplays the fact that the Austrian army virtually disintegrated and were saved only by Russian mistakes and quick German reinforcements. There is also very little mention of tactical innovation or assistance from the Germans in this volume. Obviously, a 48-page account has to be concise and skim over much ground (although it seems that no uniform detail - however trivial - must be omitted), and Dr. Jung achieves the main objective of providing a summary of Austrian forces in 1914-1916.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Agree with previous-- and more........2005-10-19

I agree completely with the previous reviewer, but just wanted to add a couple points.

1. This book has a surprising number of photos of "in flight" planes, including planes belonging to the men being written about. It even has a couple "in flight/in fight" photos. Unusual.

2. The detail on the planes and paint jobs is excellent.

3. It was originally printed by "Champlain Press," connected with a wonderful "Fighter Museum" in Phoenix which went out of business. Their outstanding collection went to the Seattle Museum of Flight. Anyway, first printing is out.
The version shown on Amazon comes from "Flying Machine Press," which has picked up a number of titles to reprint and made some fine books of their own. They made minor changes to the cover but it looks like the same (excellent) book inside.

3. Flying Machine Press shows the book as "out of print." I don't know how much we can count on the "one left, more ordered" note that is on the Amazon book listeding as of this date (10-18-05), so if you want this, you'd better order it or go for a used one soon. I don't think this is going to get any cheaper or easier to find in the near future.

4 out of 5 stars The most complete work available on a little known topic........1998-08-05

This book is the result of many years of personal research and several trips overseas by Marty O'Connor, and culminated in what is arguably the definitive work on the subject of Austro-Hungarian aces. The writing in this book is neither eloquent nor poetic, but the information is priceless. O'Connor gives a biographical outline of each ace known within the Austro-Hungarian Empire, including the number of victories (and the victory lists of several major aces), any personal background available on the pilot in question and as much postwar information as possible. Where no information exists regarding such things as a pilot's birthplace, photo, or postwar occupation, O'Connor specifically makes note of it so the reader is left with no question marks. His work is thorough and his penchant for facts will quickly win the reader's trust. Spanning the language barrier and what in many cases is an almost total lack of official records, O'Connor does a brilliant job of piecing t! ogether enough information to acquaint even a WWI novice to life in the Austro-Hungarian air service. Several appendices trace vital details such as locations of airfields, maps of battle areas and color schemes of many aces' planes. This book is the most complete work I have seen on Austro-Hungarian aces and aircraft, and includes extensive interviews with several of that country's famous aces. Although written more as a reference book than a masterpiece of prose, this book is still highly recommended.

Book Description

Starting the war with only 35 aircraft, Austro-Hungarian industry went on to produce only moderate numbers of poor quality aircraft. The fliers of the Austro-Hungarian Empire operating on the Serbian and Russian fronts were fortunate at first, finding themselves faced by small numbers of aircraft yet more obsolescent than their own. Serbia fell in 1915, but when Italy declared war the Austro-Hungarians were still faced with a two-front war – a static front against Italy, and a far more fluid one against Russia. Austro-Hungarian fighter pilots performed bravely and often very effectively under extremely difficult geographic, climatic and operational conditions.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Osprey's Austro-Hungarian Aces.......2004-08-02

An interesting addition to Osprey's Aircraft of the Aces series, this volume presents yet another little known facet of aviation history. The quality of this series is maintained with this title. There are, however, some deviations from what readers have come to expect as standard. The first half of the text is an overview of the Austro-Hungarian, Italian, and Russian air services, and the ground campaigns which they supported. I found this useful, but it may be less so to enthusiasts of the Great War already well-versed in their histories. It is not until page fifty that the text truly addresses the title. Four of the color profiles are opponents' aircraft, which has not been done in previous works in this series. There are no plan views or upper wing scrap views, which the other WWI titles contain. Also, there are no line drawings, another standard of the series. I point these out as deviations from the norm, and leave it to the individual reader to determine their value.

Overall, I enjoyed the book.

5 out of 5 stars facsinating subject.......2002-09-22

Osprey's series covers many interesting subjects but this is one of the best. If you are a Great War aviation buff check this out, its worth the money. Beautiful artwork about an unusual subject. I have the old Harleyford books about WW1 aircraft and this is just as interesting. Good asides about the Russian and Italian foes. Nice color detail for modellers. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars A fitting end to a magnificent series of original histories.......1997-12-27

With "Above the War Fronts," Norman Franks and his associates conclude a magnificent series of WW I aviation histories. The books contain virtually everything the serious researcher will ever need on the ever-popular subject of the first fighter aces, and ATWF rounds out the set with British gunner aces as well as all aces of Belgium, Italy, Russia, and Austria-Hungary. I published the first edition of the late Dr. Martin O'Connor's seminal work on the latter topic, and Franks' format does justice to all the combatants. Great War aviation, contrary to popular opinion, not only ain't dead--it ain't dyin' either.

    Book Description

The naval side of the First World War in the Adriatic provides a classic case study in narrow sea warfare. This is the story of the Austro-Hungarian KuK Navy's contribution to the Central Powers' considerable effort in the region. This finely balanced, well-handled navy successfully helped to defend Austria's Adriatic base of power--the Pola-Trieste-Fiume triangle--in the north, to protect the vital sea lane to Cattaro and the south, and to support the army from the sea--all against major odds. Its forces also contributed significantly to the U-boat war. During initial stages of the conflict, the French were the enemy at sea. Later, Italy switched allegiances, joining the Entente against her former allies. Because the KuK Kriegsmarine was no match for the Italians and the French combined, the battle fleet was thereafter kept in being at Pola, holding the Allies in check. Nonetheless, the Adriatic became an Austrian lake. Using aircraft, U-boats, torpedoes, and mines, the KuK worked toward reducing the odds against it. However, the impasse would continue until the armistice, ruling out a Mahanian showdown in the Adriatic. Koburger provides important geostrategic points of comparison and valuable lessons for other conflicts, even today.
