Book Description
The commands, units and leaders of the General SS are finally compiled into a single detailed reference book for both the historian and SS memorabilia collector. This complete volume begins with an explanation of the twelve administrative and command main offices involving the SS to include the development, components and functions of each, as well as their respective office chiefs. The following section explores the most powerful posts in the SS, the Higher SS and Police Leaders, along with the subordinate SS and Police Leaders found in occupied territories - both the commands and the individual holder of these posts are examined in depth. The SS Main Districts are covered next including all their various subordinate components, title changes, development, commanders and chiefs of staff. The more than forty SS Districts follow, detailed in a similar format. Examining the more than one-hundred and twenty-five SS Foot Regiments in the General SS, the names and ranks of the hundreds of commaners, as well as details of unit location changes, popular and honor titles as well as other data for each are within a separate chapter. Finally, the elite SS Riding Districts and Regiments are covered similarly. Career biographies are included for more than two hundred senior SS commanders, many of whom served portions of their career in the Waffen-SS, Polizei, SD and other facets of Himmler's commands. The biographical data for individuals alone adds vast detail to this fascinating topic. Along with more than 120 rare photos of SS senior ranking officers and seven maps, a detailed index allows referencing of individual commands or personalities. Mark Yerger is also the author of Riding East, The SS Cavalry Brigade in Poland and Russia 1939-1942; Images of the Waffen-SS, Chronicle of Germany's Elite Troops; and a biography of SS-Strumbannfuhrer Ernst August Krag (all three titles are available from Schiffer Publishing Ltd.)., over 120 b/w photographs, maps, 8 1/2" x 11", index

excellent reference material.......2007-07-10
This book represents an in depth and comprehensive analysis of all SS main commands as well as the men responsible for leading them. It includes a section on the sub districts as well as a portion which focuses on the SS Main Offices which reported directly to the Reichsfuhrer SS. I would highly recommend this book for any serious researcher on the subject of the Allgemeine SS and its leadership figures or organizational hierarchy.

Book Description
The SS originated as Hitler's personal bodyguard and following his rise to power in 1933 the organisation divided into two: the Waffen-SS, which comprised the military wing, and the Allgemeine-SS, whose role was to support the police in maintaining order. The Allgemeine-SS had a wide-ranging effect on all aspects of life in Nazi Germany, from enforcing Hitler’s racial policies through to the running of over 500 factories in Germany and occupied Europe. While the more visible armed SS combat units naturally received all the publicity, especially during the war, it was the rather faceless Allgemeine-SS which wielded the real power.
Customer Reviews:
A General reader on the General SS.......2006-12-31
THE ALLGEMEINE-SS is yet another entry in Osprey Publishing's successful and seemingly endless series of handy-reference booklets on all subjects World War II. Although little more than an extended pamphlet in terms of length, like all of Osprey's books it manages to stuff an impressive amount of information and a hell of a lot of illustration into just shy of 50 pages. It makes for an eye-pleasing and easy read, and more importantly, a super-convenient reference manual.
The Allgemeine (or "General") SS is a sadly neglected subject, standing as it does in the long shadows cast by the other, more toothly branches of Heinrich Himmler's sprawling organization, most notably Security Service and the Waffen-SS; yet it is the Allgemeine-SS, and not these later-comers, which gave the organization the distinctive "black-clad" character which it is still associated with today, and (despite what Hollywood would tell you) it is only the Allgemeine SS who continued to wear notoriously beautiful and ultra-distinctive all-black uniform until the end of the war.
As the name implies, the General SS was made up of all SS men who were not part of the "full-time" (that is to say, paid) members of the organization - in other words, all SS men who had not been selected to serve as SS combat soldiers, concentration camp staff or security personnel. Except for their seniormost officers they were unarmed, part-time volunteers, who periodically traded in their civilian clothes for black uniforms and jackboots when so ordered, lending their hands as police auxiliaries, security officers, collectors for Winter Relief, etc. The General SS was a large, popular and highly selective organization in peacetime, turning down about 90 of every 100 applicants and stressing rigid adherence to National Socialist ideology and racial purity. When the war came, however, the vast majority of the General SS (being mostly fit young men) were either drafted into the regular army services or transferred into the Waffen-SS, trading in their black uniforms for the field gray of wartime. Though vastly reduced in numbers, however, Lumsden smashes the myth that this outfit and its famous black getup disappeared into the ether after 1939, pointing out that as late as 1944 some 40,000 men, exempt from the draft because of age, wounds or other infirmities, continued to serve as representatives of the "black SS."
Lumsden is terse but efficient in overviewing the organization. He briefly but thoroughly explains the history, mission, organization, uniforms, recruitment standards, symbolism and ideology of the General SS, adducing a number of photos as he goes, but relying mainly on attractive illustrations by Paul Hannon to show the many variations of the infamous black uniform, from the regular service getup to the astonishing English-cut dinner jacket, from the silver-buttoned overcoat to the white-jacketed summer dress. Lumsden may not have much room to work with, but he manages to stuff information and illustration from cover to cover, and will leave even knowledgeable readers with a better understanding of the subject than whence they came.
To sum up: the ALLGEMEINE-SS is by no means the end-all on this complex and ill-explored subject, but it makes for a very fine beginning.
Basic!.......2000-05-06
Basic information about the sinister and black clad soldiers of the nazi party. Must read for historians, modellers and militaria collectors alike.

Customer Reviews:
The enduring value of the work of Andrew Mollo.......2000-08-29
The multi-volume work of Andrew Mollo on the uniforms of the SS remains the single best treatment of the subject in the English language, not the least because of the extensive use of footnotes to acquaint the reader with his sources. While the books are as much as thirty years old, no more recent work can match the breadth and depth of this series. Subsequent works may boast more photographs in color and more detailed illustrations of certain pieces of militaria, but they have not reached or surpassed the level of historical scrutiny achieved by Mollo and his artist collaborators. These later works are more attractive to the eye, but they fail to inform the reader about the nature of the material in the manner necessary for the task. The sole exception to this generalization is the work of the mid-1980s of John Angolia on cloth SS insignia and the recent work on camouflaged uniforms of the W-SS. However, neither of these includes all facets of the subject, as do these seven volumes.
A Detailed look at the uniforms of Hitler's SS officials........1997-10-13
Andrew Mollo gives the student of uniforms a most valuable reference tool in examing the Allgemeine (General) SS. Included in the book are several plates depicting cuff titles, collar tabs, shoulder boards, equipment, etc. that decorated and were used by SS men. The information presented in this single volume is the best I have seen. It is invaluable for those collecting Third Reich Memrobila or those fascinated by the fanfare and pagentry that was characteristic of Third Reich uniforms.

Brief insights at Himmler's Henchmen.......2006-08-17
When thinking of the SS one generally expects a group of uniformed gangsters who operated the machinery of the Death Camps. And indeed there are many such types here. At the same time there are others like August Heismeyer who were school adminstrators (it doesn't mention he was also husband to Nazi Women's Leader Scholtz-Klink).
This book provides detail on the mixed bag who were Himmler's lieutenants.
An insightful book. Well worth reading.

Great baby gift.......2005-02-10
I think it's a great gift for a baby's first birthday - the photos from the year they were born.
Great book but watch the year!.......2002-04-05
This is a fantastic book! I have started collecting these and so far have 3 books in the series. I think they are a great, economical way to remember what has happened in our history and to never forget.
You mush watch the title however. This book says "2001 Album" which really means pictures from the 2000 year. If people would look at the published date they would see that it was published in Feb. 2001 which oviously means it is not for the 2001 year.
This book has fantastic picture quality. Even some photos are dual page spreads. Fantastic quality and great captions and descriptions makes for a winning combo.
Start collecting these books today. They're the best photo's and descriptions you can buy at this price!
2001? I think not!!.......2002-03-04
I bought two copies of this book for my twins that were born in 2001. I thought it would be great for them to have when they get older to see what happened the year they were born. However, I quickly returned the books when I found out that they are actually about events that occured in the year 2000, NOT 2001 as one would guess from its title! I think this is a bad title for the book. I was highly disappointed!
I think this book is mistitled ..........2002-02-24
This book is titled "Life 2001 Album: Yhe Year In Pictures", but buyer beware ... the year that is depicted in pictures is actually the year 2000! Great book if what you really want is a picture book of the Year 2000, not 2001.

The New York Times 2000 Almanac is a dazzling achievement, with a thousand pages of densely packed information that cover the U.S., the world, the economy, health, sports, science, and technology with depth and perspective, while its "Almanac of the Year" chapter includes a "Chronology of the Year's Events," "Obituaries from 1998-1999," "Novel Prizes," "The Millennium," and "Major News Stories of 1999." And the almanac provides 16 color pages of maps, covering time zones and a current depiction of the world's nations, provinces, and states.
The index alone is 29 pages long. A glance at the P's illustrates the extraordinary scope of this almanac. A small sample includes Pittsburgh, Pa. (with population statistics, climate, crime, government, rents, and Web sites), Planets (glossary, characteristics, visibility, and 1998 to 1999 discoveries), Plate tectonics theory, Pledge of Allegiance, and Poetry (with Pulitzer Prize, Bollingen Prize, and National Book Awards), as well as Poland (with area codes, economy, geography, government, etc.), Polar regions, Political action committees, and James K. Polk. There are 65 entries under Population, plus entries for Poverty, Presidential elections and administrations, Prisons, Professional sports, Public schools, Purchasing power of the dollar, and Purim.
In topic range and quality of reporting, the Times Almanac outshines its competitors. It likewise surpasses them in usefulness and sheer quantity of detail. Though the print is small and the pages are thin, the Times 2000 Almanac will no doubt become the reference standard for researchers and writers, students and professionals who require easy access to abundant and accurate information. --Stephanie Gold

Customer Reviews:
Valuable Reference.......2003-02-20
I use both THE NEW YORK TIMES ALMANAC and THE WORLD ALMANAC as references. The strengths of the former are its articles on world energy, the global economy and the global military situation. As a big fan of the movies, I find its lack of biographical data on celebrities and actors to be an annoying weakness.
Big mistake on page 275.......2001-11-25
When they are discussing the 2000 US population they mention the states with the largest hispanic population. They get the population columns mixed up. They claim California has a hispanic population of 33,871,648 and a total population of 10,966,648. That's impossible! They make the same mistake with other states they cover in that "article".
much better than the other guys.......2001-08-10
I'm a bit of an almanac afficionado, and the NYT Almanac -- in its organization, content and style -- beats the rest, hands down. More relevant facts, a logical layout, and even a readable typeface make this book an almanac lover's dream.
Not important?.......2001-05-20
---------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE:
This review is related only to year 2001 edition of the Almanac, not 2002 edition. I was pleased to find completely rewritten and generally fair section regarding World War II in the 2002 edition.(Note added on 03/06/2002.)
---------------------------------------------------------------
I was looking through the Almanac today in a bookstore, and two things disappointed me a lot in its Most Important Historic Events Of The Second Millennium section.
For one thing, the only event mentioned for the year 1941 was bombing of Pearl Harbor. And what about undeclared war against Soviet Union, which Germany started on June 22, 1941? Soviet Union lost over 20 millions of people in the war. I guess publishers of the almanac do not view an event as important, if there is no corresponding Hollywood fairy tail?
Secondly, for the year 1945 almanac proudly states: "British and American troops liberated death camps in Dahau and elsewhere". And not even a word about crucial role that Soviet Union played in liberating Germany from Nazi.
Can you think of something more shameful, than stealing victory from millions and millions of people, who paid their lives for it?
Not as up to date.......2001-01-07
I enjoy these types of almanacs a great deal but I was disappointed with the New York Times' offering. It uses information that doesn't seem as current as information in the "World Almanac" for instance. I also found it a bit disorganized.

Book Description
Although a large number of cemeteries have been explored in Roman Britain they have never been seen as central to the study of the province. A narrowly defined 'historical' tradition of studying the Roman provinces had an almost exclusive hold on British academia until the 1980s. Gradually this situation changed. Major cemetery excavations were increasingly undertaken within the 'Rescue Archaeology' boom and a minority of those working on these sites began to ask what information cemeteries could contribute to our wider understanding. Developing contacts on the continent resulted in the growth of a small network of scholars across Europe, who got together for several conferences. The twenty-eight papers presented in this volume stem from a symposium held at the University of Durham in 1997. They explore different approaches to the wide diversity of data now available. The papers are grouped under five headings: The reconstruction of mortuary rituals, Burial and social status, The dead in the landscape, Burial and ethnicity and society, Religion and burial in late Roman Britain and Italy.

Book Description
A major contribution to one of the most fascinating debates about the Ancient World, this volume provides a significant insight into the changes that occurred in the late Roman period and which shaped the emergence of early medieval Europe. The volume will be of importance to historians and archaeologists interested in the changes in the character of urbanism, military organization and the rural landscape which separate the Roman Empire from Late Antiquity (1st to early 7th centuries AD). Some papers focus on the lower Danube, others provide comparative studies which range from northern Italy and Pannonia to Greece, western Asia Minor and as far east as the Euphrates. These papers compare the results of different international research teams but also contrast approaches and methodology in order to assess the extent to which these differences might account for apparently contradictory conclusions. The volume also demonstrates the uses and pitfalls encountered in attempts to combine evidence provided by ancient historians and archaeologists - a theme which has wider implications beyond this volume.
