Excelente biografia.......2006-08-27
Esta excelente biografia de Roberto Clemente nos adentra a la vida de un idolo que, a pesar del tiempo, sigue siendo un ejemplo para todos. En ocasiones se tiende a olvidar sus vivencias, pero David Maraniss nos ilustra con lujo de detalles muchos detalles desconocidos de esta leyenda. Este libro incluye fotos, datos estadisticos y es un excelente recurso para aquellos que deseen conocer mas de este heroe que trascendio el beisbol, y las fronteras sin dejar su humildad, y amor hacia el projimo. Hacen falta más personas como Roberto Clemente. Excelente libro.

I highly recommend this book to anyone curious about the history and underworkings of the great cities of the world. It gave me a new appreciation for what goes in to the planning, creation and development of a major city.
What's there beneath our feet.........2007-03-23
I almost started by stating this book isn't for the average reader. But, I'm an average reader, and frankly I found the information within it fascinating. Coincidentally I lived in N.Y.C., and have a little more experience with its underground infrastructure than just having been a straphanger (subway rider). Mr. Marshall has a no nonsense writing style, and his research has resulted in much interesting information regarding what's buried beneath our feet. The history of how, and why things got, and get buried in the first place makes the book all the more enlightening. Especially the consideration that things get buried as a result of debris that accumulates over time, and how history is lost, and then sometimes rediscovered in the process of modernization.

A beautiful book, monumental piece of research, with clear and engaging prose and a great mix of maps, illustrations, capsule histories, lively facts, and timelines. If you ever stood over a manhole or at the dark edge of a subway tunnel and wondered, "What's down there?" then this book will tell you. Beneath the Metropolis describes what's underneath 12 world cities -- New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Mexico City, Paris, London, Rome, Cairo, Beijing, Tokyo, Moscow and Sydney. With pith and concision, Marshall details the infrastructure, the archeology and the geology. In Paris, we learn about the fossilized bones and the beautiful sewers and subways. In Rome, we tour the ancient ruins and rickety subway (did you know there was one?). In Beijing, we learn about the vast network of cold war tunnels that few visit. Marshall uses each city's underground to trace its history, politics and economics. It's a pleasure to learn how successful cities, like London or Paris, can take different approaches to infrastructure. As a fellow author and former Columbia classmate, I admire and envy Marshall's success in wrestling such a huge topic into a pleasurable masterpiece. Since the end of the First World War Secret bases were created to hide ammounts of supplies, but it was at the begining of the Second World War that vast bases were built. This book is an complete study of all such sites from the central ammunition depot at Corsham which extended over 200 acres underground holding over 350,000 tons of ammunition even complete aircraft engine factories were built underground safe from bombing. Even the countries Art treasures were moved from London to Wales to central Art Repositories for safe keeping the entrances then concealed. The book even continues into the Cold War period this detailed study is a must for anyone interested in the war in Britain.

This book has caused me great suffering........2003-03-10
I am a sophomore in highschool taking an AP class with this book. It has a lot of information, which I guess is a good thing if you are reading this for your own personal gain rather than being tested on it. However, it is so dense that it is difficult to pick up key ideas. Every piece of information is important on some level, and the tests I take, which my teacher got along with this book, also treat every fact as important. I wouldn't mind reading this book if I wasn't expected to have a photographic memory but it just doesn't do a good job of helping me understand key ideas in history. Well, if you have to read this in your history class I hope you have a good teacher to guide you along in the reading. Otherwise.... I hope your memory is better than mine!!

Excellent book for senior high school-college-undergraduate studies, covering the broad field of world history. The text is structured in such a manner as to suit both brief studies of various areas and times, as well as more in depth, long term programs. A fascinating assortment of primary source excerpts have been included, from earliest human societies to issues facing humanity in the contemporary period. Though the text has a slight Western emphasis, it covers non-Western civilisations quite well.
Be prepared though for extensive reading. The complete set is very large, but shouldn't be an obstacle for those with a passion for both general and obscure history!

This book investigates the rhetorical impact of the American gynecological case history, the favored form of popularizing the technologies created by gynecological science for intervening in the birth process in both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Beginning in the scientific text and moving to more popular venues, the case history has helped to shape two centuries of thought about medicalized birth. Case histories in nineteenth-century gynecology textbooks and women's handbooks prepared our grandparents to accept the first technologies of birth: the forceps, drugs, and hospitalization. The open discussion of birth in such texts helped the new specialty of gynecology establish moral and scientific authority.
In the twentieth century, case histories have helped to popularize assisted reproduction; in venues such as the women's service magazine this representation has been very positive, combining elements of myth, fairy tale, and religious miracle to interpret the majority of such cases as "happyendings" for all involved. Smaller publications such as the nation's commentary magazines are more critical, often capitalizing on specific cases to communicate messages tied to their moral/ethical agendas. Newspaper coverage of reproductive technology is more wide-ranging, but it also tends to indulge in the sensation provided by newsworthy cases to garner reader attention. Finally, twentieth-century novelists have fictionalized reproductive technology to make critical statements about its affect on women and society, often representing a more accurate picture than any of the non-fiction venues because of the ability of a single author to control the point of view.
