          Book Description

Until the 1940s, social life in Taiwan was generally organized through the family—marriages were arranged by parents, for example, and senior males held authority. In the following years, as Taiwan evolved rapidly from an agrarian to an industrialized society, individual decisions became less dependent on the family and more influenced by outside forces. Social Change and the Family in Taiwan provides an in-depth analysis of the complex changes in family relations in a society undergoing revolutionary social and economic transformation.

This interdisciplinary study explores the patterns and causes of change in education, work, income, leisure time, marriage, living arrangements, and interactions among extended kin. Theoretical chapters enunciate a theory of family and social change centered on the life course and modes of social organization. Other chapters look at the shift from arranged marriages toward love matches, as well as changes in dating practices, premarital sex, fertility, and divorce.

Contributions to the book are made by Jui-Shan Chang, Ming-Cheng Chang, Deborah S. Freedman, Ronald Freedman, Thomas E. Fricke, Albert Hermalin, Mei-Lin Lee, Paul K. C. Liu, Hui-Sheng Lin, Te-Hsiung Sun, Arland Thornton, Maxine Weinstein, and Li-Shou Yang.

                      Product Description

When the American soldier, the GI, gets the worst of it in these Normandy actions, Marshall tells us. When teh Americans show bravery, hardihood and quick wit, Marshall tells us. And we see that in the main the Americans are hard, keen and fast. It is a battle record where we can all say with Marshall, These young Americans are not soft. There are a few slow knuckleheads, but mostly they look bright, fast and handy in all the actions from page to page. Should I meet a young fellow just tapped for the draft and saying to me, "I want to read about the war, I will tell him, You can get it here in this book, Night Drop. You will get action from page to page, all kinds of action having surprises."

3 out of 5 stars "In the gloaming" with S.L.A. Marshall.......2005-09-08

In Night Drop, S.L.A Marshall seems to forget the old saying,"Readers read for story, not for writing."
Throughout this chronicle of the 82nd and 101st Airborne assaults of Normandy on D-Day, Marshall writes like the public speaker who's motto is, "Why use one word when five will do."

While Night Drop is packed with great action and terrific detail, the writing often stands in the way like a literary combination lock that forces the reader to spin and spin again until he figures out what just happened. For example, on page 281; Marshall describes the ambush of a reinforced German squad; the upshot is that seven German soldiers were taken captive, the rest killed. Rather than state this plainly, Marshall ends the episode with, "...thirteen of the pigeons were killed." Now...describing German soldiers as pigeons serves neither the reader, the Germans, or for that matter, the pigeons.

Writers and film directors work had to write and film seamlessly so that the reader or viewer's disbelief is suspended and their audience becomes emotionally involved. Using words solely for the sake of arful or colorful language is more speed bump, than speed ramp.

More of it on page 91, "...in the gloaming uniforms and arms are undistinguishable." My guess is that if you listed all of the words used in Normandy by the combatants during this battle by their frequency of usage, "gloaming" would be dead last or tied for last with something like "Insouciant" or "Lugubrious."

Another annoying practice of Marshall's is to stream the narrative together from chapter to chapter - with each chapter neither beginning a new story or ending the old one - making it appear that the chapters had been chosen by a numerologist, rather than an editor. This forces the casual, second time reader to begin the book from the beginning each time, rather than being able to search through the familiar passages for afavorite sequence as you might search through your ice box for a favorite snack. Marshall has no truck with common sense chaptering. You must consume the entire book from preface to index or risk famine.

And yet, the book is worth reading, but sadly for us paratrooper junkies, it is less drug than methadone.

5 out of 5 stars You want detail? YOU GOT DETAIL!.......2001-09-30

Think you know alot about the awesome 82nd and 101st during D-day?..well if you havn't read SLAM's book then think again...This book flattened me with the amount of minute detail it covered about individuals while maintaining the overall picture of what the divisions were up to. You will find out about individuals who took certain bridges and crossroads that are never mentioned in bigger histories. Want to know what the men were thinking during the battles? Well SLAM asked them during the war and records it hear for all to hear. You will absolutely love this book. It is sad, exciting, heart wrenching and will make you proud to be from the same country as these awesome men! The only problem is finding the book...do a rare book search on the internet and should be able to find an old copy (found mine for 4 bucks). Good luck and enjoy!

                      5 out of 5 stars Excellent AIRBORNE.......2000-01-05

This is an excellent book on the Airborne drop into Normandy on D-Day. A must read for any historian of airborne. The book is detrailed down to individual and squad actions while at the same time giving you the overall picture.

                                    Book Description

The Soviet Union in World Politics provides an introductory history of Soviet foreign policy and international relations from 1945 to the end of the Cold War and the break up of the USSR. Geoffrey Roberts summarizes historical and political controversies about Soviet foreign policy and brings the most recent research to bear on these debates. The book examines the role of ideology in the Cold War and discusses Stalin's role in the formulation of policy. Using the latest evidence available from the Soviet archives, it offers an excellent framework for the exploration of relevant issues and a guide to further reading and research.

                                      Book Description

Optimal control emerged as a distinct field of research only in recent decades. It provides a unified perspective of optimization problems, arising in scheduling and the control of engineering devices, that are beyond the reach of traditional analytical and computational techniques. In addition, the field has contributed significant advances to branches of applied mathematics and broad applications in process control, scheduling, robotics, resource economics, and other areas. Optimal Control brings together many of the important advances in 'nonsmooth' optimal control over the last two decades concerning necessary conditions, minimizer regularity and global optimality conditions associated with the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. The book's development and analysis is largely self-contained and incorporates numerous simplifications and unifying features for the subjects' key concepts and foundations. Features and Topics: * a comprehensive overview is provided for specialists and nonspecialists * authoritative, coherent and accessible coverage of the role of nonsmooth analysis in investigating minimizing curves for optimal control * chapter coverage of dynamic programming *explains the necessary conditions for nonconvex problems * chapter coverage of the regularity of minimizers This new book is an essential resource for an authoritative and comprehensive presentation of the foundations and application of nonsmooth optimal control. Postgraduates, researchers and professionals in systems, control, optimization and applied mathematics will find that the book is accessible, provides a rich source of insights and offers clear exposition.

                                                        Description:
This research studies a multi-stage supply chain system that operates under a JIT (just-in-time) delivery policy. Kanbans play an important role in the information and material flows in a supply chain system. Thus, a kanban mechanism is employed to assist in linking different production processes in a supply chain system to implement the scope of JIT philosophy. For a multi-stage supply chain system, a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem is formulated from the perspective of JIT delivery policy where a kanban may reflect to a transporter such as a truck or a fork-lifter. The number of kanbans, the batch size, the number of batches and the total quantity over one period are determined optimally. It is solved optimally by branch and bound method. A greedy heuristic to avoid the large computational time in branch-and-bound algorithm is developed for solving a large MINLP. Coupled with plant-wide efforts for cost control and management commitment, a logistic system for controlling the production as well as the supply chain is built, which results in minimizing the total cost of the supply chain system. The results show that the improvements in reduction of inventory, wasted labor and customer service in a supply chain are significantly accomplished through the kanban mechanism.
