Book Description
Nostalgic memories bind brothers and sisters together, making for special lifelong friendships. With lives shaped by the same influences and similar experiences, brothers and sisters understand and relate to one another on many levels. The special affection they feel for each other is undeniable. After all, who else knows about the secret crush on your fourth-grade teacher? Or who else knows you fed your broccoli to the family dog?
Brothers and Sisters celebrates this unique relationship in all its glory and complexity. From "we make a house a fun place to live" to "we keep each other humble," best-selling author Gregory E. Lang provides 100 poignant reasons why brothers and sisters of all ages and combinations treasure those unique bonds that last for a lifetime.
"I cannot imagine my life without my brothers and sister," Lang writes. "The five of us, just over seven years apart from the first to the last, have been comrades since day one. We did all the things happy siblings do together. We rode our bikes every day, spent weekend nights sleeping outside under the stars, celebrated each other's birthdays, taught one another how to do things, pushed each other around once in a while, fought about who got to sit by the window of the station wagon, played tricks and tattled on one another, kept secrets from each other, and shared a home-cooked meal each night at the same table with our parents."
Lang writes about how his teenage daughter, an only child until Lang recently married a woman who also has a teenage daughter, will finally know the joy of having a sister. Other blended families are sure to relate, and this book makes a wonderful gift for siblings and step-siblings.
With photographs of families of varying sizes and backgrounds, Brothers and Sister will appeal to anyone who shares a happy, affectionate relationship with a brother or a sister.

Paradox of Loyalty book.......2006-11-05
An incredibly vital incite regarding African American opinion in the post S/11 environment. Great collaboration of work by eminent, interesting & passionate authors.
September 12, 2001 and Beyond.......2003-09-23
September 11, 2001 was a day that changed the world forever. Two hijacked planes demolished the twin towers of the World Trade Center, another hit the Pentagon, and a plane full of heroes crashed in a lonely Pennsylvania field. The reality of the number of people who were killed or injured brought home how precious life is. Hearing of the thousands of people who were missing and the heartbreak of their loved ones was enough to devastate anyone. From that day forward, the world mourned the loss caused by the horrific acts of the terrorists.
In the days following the tragedy there were endless perspectives and commentaries offered, but the one that was not fully represented was that of African Americans. In THE PARADOX OF LOYALTY: AN AFRICAN AMERICAN RESPONSE TO THE WAR ON TERRORISM, edited by Julianne Malveux and Reginna A. Green, readers are offered a diverse collection of essays which cover every human emotion. The book also speaks of the changes that have been forced upon all Americans due to the September 11 tragedy. From more invasive searches at airports to additional security at major events, everyone is affected.
One of the stongest essays in this book is titled "Necessary Changes," by Gail E. Mitchell with Andrea Benton Rushing. Ms. Mitchell is the definition of a survivor. She was blessed to survive both an earthquake and both attacks on the World Trade Center. Ms. Mitchell experienced a wide range of emotions, and the horrible events of September 11 are still with her to this day. Although she is working through her pain, grief, and anxiety, she realizes that she will never be the same person that she was before the terrorist attacks occured.
THE PARADOX OF LOYALTY: AN AFRICAN AMERICAN RESPONSE TO THE WAR ON TERRORISM is a book that I recommend that all Americans read, so that everyone's perspective is understood and represented. Reading the stories in this book was an emotional, yet rewarding, experience. I was able to experience other peoples reactions and emotions through this wonderfully written collection of stories.

THIS BOOK IS A PUBLIC SERVICE.......2003-02-23
While our nation rushes to war, Julianne Malveaux and Reginna Green suggest that we put on the brakes. They have assembled an important array of African American voices, and they have spoken up,themselves, with passion and with insight. I have seen a few books that have taken on the national perspective on war, but I have seen nothing as creative, as energetic, as original, and as forceful as this work.
This is not an African American response, it is a national response, and people who are not African American should embrace this as energetically as African Americans do. Julianne Malveaux and Reginna Green are speaking to our nation's consciousness in this volume. They are reminding us that we have much to think about when we look into the souls of 20 black folks who put their vision out there.
I am excited about this book from its cover art to its warm introduction by Cornel West (he thinks highly of Dr. Malveaux) to its exploration of scripture and public policy. I have never reviewed anything for amazon before but I decided to because I feel that this is a must-read book.
I would want this book in my library because of Barbara Lee's staement, because John Edgar Wideman contriubuted, because Julianne Malveaux's thoughts on shared status are important and provocative, because Ron Walters says the right things, because Aaron McGruder's comments illustrate. You will want this book in your library beauxe it is the best protest to the war that is out there right now.

Valueable Tool In Learning About Our World........2005-12-09
Where I'm coming from: I'm non-Jewish and am pro-Jewish on the individual level, just as I am pro-black on an individual level, in other words I look at people as individuals when I look at them individually which is hopefully most of the time. I also happen to be of "old stock" European ancestry, and so I am none too pleased with what may be termed the "Jewish Agenda" with regards to supporting the demographic change in the U.S. (Some might call it a sort of quiet genocide of my people.)
Anyway, this is a very interesting book and I have a long way to go in finishing it. But what seems to be a common theme is that Jews (racial and religious) who have entries on them in the book are treated as "one of the gang" and they are described with a great deal of sympathy regardless of how they may have hurt non-Jews (and Jews themselves); Karl Marx, Jabotinsky, and Menachem Begin, for example, come to mind. There are many outstanding (in the most positive sense) Jewish individuals with entries, such as the great Benjamin Nathan Cardozo, one of the finest legal minds and one who had a tremendous sympathy for his fellow humans and who wrote the most beautiful legal opinions, a real hero of mine. Many other great people of the Jewish faith are included.
But why, oh why, is Karl Marx there? You'd think Jews would want to disown him. I think some earlier Jewish Encylopedias included Herbert Aptheker, (former) chief theoretician for the Communist Party, USA. How strange, how unholy...
The passage on Disraeli was quite interesting in that it ends with a statement he made to the effect that Jews were the purest, best, and noblest race. From what I've read so far, this also seems to be central to the guiding philosophy behind this book.
To learn about the Jewish people this book is very helpful.

Very Very Good Book I Ever Have!.......2003-01-06
This encyclopedia is very recommended to every WWII enthusiasts. It provides us with detail information and supporting pictures. The detail helps me a lot to create dioramas of the WWII theatre. Many dioramas I made are based on the reference of this book. I do hope there is another book like this to help many WWII enthusiats in the world to have a good reference.
Sympathetic.......2002-03-19
upon reading certain passages in this reference manual, most memorably the article on the concentration/death camp at Auschwitz, i was appalled and disgusted. while consistently refusing to refer to the National Socialists by their true moniker, NAZI, the book continuously UNDERCUTS the horror and mass murder committed against humanity by the Nazi regime. understandably, this book is intended to inform, and must take a neutral stance. However, this book fails to convey the true nature of the horrors committed against humanity, and provides a voice that is almost SYMPATHETIC to the Third Reich. in one article it says how most of the jewish prisoners in the camps died of "poor hygenic practices" and disease, while "some" of the deaths, "SOME" mind you, could be attributed to executions. MOST of the deaths can be attributed to merciless murder and slaughter of human beings as waste. do not purchase or consult this book. it is a horror that it is even in print, and that Da Capo would even translate it into english. while extensively informative, this book makes one cognizant of a perpetual nausea while reading. do not buy this book.
From A to Z!.......2000-04-29
Very informative and filled with historical photos along with fascinating articles from the Third Reich. Some minor areas could use more detail, but the over all look is excellent. Truly the "...definitive reference source..." on the Third Reich.
This book is a must for students and historians of World War II.
Somewhat superficial, but very informative........1999-02-19
Somewhat superficial but very informative
Terribly concise and all-encompasing.......1998-11-11
While certain subjects contain more elaboration than others, the overall picture is 100% complete. If it is in anyway connected to the Third Reich (and in many cases the Reichs prior), it is in here.

Book Description
Ideal for researching the status and activities of Third World women
For quick, reliable coverage of women's issues in developing countries, here is a concise reference work written by a team of more than 80 international experts. The Encyclopedia comprises 68 essays that cover the entire Third World, from Africa to Asia, from the Near East to South and Central America, from the South Pacific to the Caribbean. The women authors are acknowledged experts from Harvard University, the World Bank, the United Nations Development Fund for Women, the University of Nairobi, the International Labor Organization, and other institutions, who summarize the most recent scholarship on a wide range of important subjects. Thoroughly indexed and cross-referenced, the Encyclopedia is an ideal starting point for in-depth research in such areas as:
recent developments in the prevention of violence against women * the conditions of women's lives across regions and countries * women's participation in government, science, and technology * hidden curriculum issues in higher education * an overview of women's experiences as small-scale entrepreneurs
A feminist viewpoint enhances the coverage
Informed throughout by a feminist perspective, the Encyclopedia focuses on traditional women's concerns, such as political participation, human rights, nutrition, housework, the family, equality, health, and more. But the coverage also extends to such issues as domestic and sexual violence, creation of women-friendly cities, patriarchal ideologies as religious beliefs, the needs of older women, new jobs and exploitation in industrial production, AIDS, the gender consequences of ecological devastation, movements for change, and other areas of increasing awareness. Geographical entries cover all the major regions and countries and discuss conditions and issues in each area.
Spotlights the newest and best sources
The Encyclopedia brings together information that has been widely scattered in sources from many disciplines. An introduction by the editor illuminates the most important issues faced by Third World women today and analyzes the drastically changed global situation and how the changes impacted on the material presented in the Encyclopedia.
Reference aids make information retrieval easy
An annotated bibliography of the latest and most important sources, as well as a reference list at the end of each chapter, provide quick access to current literature. A thorough name and subject index makes it easy to pinpoint information.

Book Description
The Encyclopedia of the Third Reich covers all the important people (both Nazis and members of the Resistance), military operations, concepts and organizations of the era, and includes information on those regarded as influential to the Nazi ideology or who influenced Hitler personally, such as Karl Lueger. The book also includes a detailed chronology of the Third Reich, starting with the birth of Adolf Hitler and ending the with executions at Nuremberg 1946.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book, even if out of date.......2003-12-22
This is an informative resource of Nazi Germany. Many people who wouldn't normally be included in such encyclopedias are here, such as Lieut.-General Walther Wever and Goering's first wife. It also includes philosophers who lived before the formation of the Nazi party that influenced the Nazi ideology including Paul Anton de Legarde and Joseph Arthur Comte de Gobineau.
Yet another fascinating aspect of the book is that includes many victims of the Nazi regime, such as Walter Gempp, the chief of the Fire Brigade of Berlin.
Overall, the variety and detail of this book is stunning, and I would recommend it for any student of World War II or Third Reich history.
Invaluable reference book to Hitler's Third Reich.......2003-03-11
Anyone interested in Nazi Germany and want to be well-armed in knowledge of that era can look no further than Louis L. Snyder's Encyclopedia of the Third Reich. Major entries are very detailed. Most of them are two to three pages, such as Goebbels, Goering, Hess and the Hess flight together, the July Plot, and the Katyn Massacre. Hitler himself takes up ten full pages, if that's any indication of the detail of the entries. Considering how the book is 388 pages minus bibliography and the number of entries, that isn't too bad.
Apart from Hitler and friends, there are also events and people of the Weimar Republic, such as Paul von Hindenburg, who named Hitler chancellor, as well as Hitler's predecessors, such as Heinrich Bruning, Franz von Papen, and Kurt von Schleicher. After all, Weimar's downfall caused Hitler's rise.
There are also organizational charts throughout, such as the Hierarchy of the NSDAP and the ranks in the Third Reich. This latter entry lists the army ranks of the German Army, and the equivalent ranking in the SS, NSDAP, German Police, and United States Army. For example, a general in the German Army has a rank equal to an SS-Obergruppenfuehrer, a NSDAP Gauleiter, the General der Polizei in the German Police, and a General in the US Army. Tables are also included, such as the list of Gaus (districts) under the third reich and the Gauleiter in charge.
Key conferences and attendees include the Rastenburg Conference, where Hitler and his military advisors were on 20 July 1944, which is the day of the bomb plot, and the Wannsee Conference, where Reinhard Heydrich chaired a meeting detailing the Endlosung or Final Solution.
Many entries are concepts in the original German. So for the entry Night and Fog Decree, it will say See Nacht- Und Nebel Erlass, where the data will be.
Acronyms usual have See the full name. E.g. NSAG. See Nationalsozialistische Arbeitgemeinschaft. Looking up that entry, one will find it's English for National Socialist Working Association. Damn, those Nazis really liked long words, didn't they?
Trial results include that of the Frankfurt Trial, for the chief SS officers at Auschwitz, the Doctor's Trial, for those doctors who experimented on prisoners of war, and of course, the Nuremberg Trials. Each has the defendant, DOB or age, position, verdict and punishment.
As for actual documents, there are Hitler's Last Will and Political Testament. There are also general essays on art, architecture, film and theatre (especially Triumph Of The Will, which has an entry all its own), music, and education. Other things of interest: the lyrics and translation of the Horst Wessel anthem and "Lili Marlene."
At the beginning, there is a chronology of key dates in history, with the exact day. Under 1933, there is an entry January 30. Appointment of Hitler as Chancellor.
I have the 1989 edition, so Albert Speer and Rudolf Hess had died, but according to the book, they are still alive. Why the lack of corrections, especially when the discovery of bones in Brazil in 1985 presumably of Josef Mengele, is listed in the entry for Josef Mengele? Still, a minor quibble in this extremely invaluable reference work on a very infamous period in history.
Any student of the Third Reich will have a definite advantage over others with this book.
Could have been better..........2002-07-15
This book serves as a good tool for quick reference, but falls short when it comes to details. Due to the great number of subjects and people covered in this mini "encyclopedia", the descriptions are superficial and lacking in depth.
I also found that quite a few important figures of the time were missing, whereas less important ones were abundant.
The book, if done properly, would have been at least twice its current size and a far more accurate tool of reference. Still, good intentions, right?
Comprehensive Work.......2000-12-31
This book covers most of the important people, events and ideas behind the Third Reich. As with any good encylopedia, it is fairly comprehensive. Most listings are easy to find, although Snyder refers to German names more often than English ones. I found one minor fault with this book, at least in the 1993 edition. Snyder frequently lists dead people as still living. In a few cases, individuals may have passed since publication, but not usually. Albert Speer, for instance, is listed as still living, even though he died in 1981! I know this is true of many others ( some were born in the 19th century). But this is a small flaw in an otherwise fine book.

Book Description
When Newton was faced with explaining what made the planets orbit the sun, he couldn't! He therefore left it up to God to keep the planets moving. Although Newton didn't bother grappling with the question of what made the Earth rotate, Laplace, in trying to eliminate God as the cause of planetary orbiting, used the notion that the planets condensed out of a swirling mass of gas to explain both orbiting and rotation.
Today, the conservation of motion in closed systems has been added to obscure the fact that we have no better explanation for planetary orbiting and rotation than Newton's God!
In our ignorance of what causes the planets to orbit and rotate, we have used historical forces, forces which are not subject to direct analysis, to explain planetary movement.
If historical forces are causing the Earth to rotate, then anything that would cause friction with the Earth's surface would cause it to slow down.
Because the atmosphere hasn't slowed the Earth down, the argument goes, it can't be causing friction with the surface of the Earth.
This, of course, is absurd, requiring the notion that the particles of air that make up the atmosphere were put in motion as a result of the historical swirling mass of gas!
Absurdity, however, has not precluded slavishly applying the assumption of Newton's historic momentum to the atmosphere in current attempts to explain the weather, obscuring explanations of how the weather really works!
The author, using the atom modeled in Atoms, Stars and Minds: Synthesizing an Elementary Particle That Comprehends Itself explains how the winds originate from the movement of air masses between the equator and the poles, and shows how heat is transferred by the interaction of oxygen and hydrogen atoms in the air masses as they move the atoms through the environment to produce the weather.

Garbage.......2007-02-06
Peter Bros is a poorly educated man with a very strong agenda to prove the massive 'conspiracy' behind modern science. He makes many strong claims in his books and website with little or no explanation and doesn't truly seem to understand the concepts he criticizes. Reading a few pages of his 'literature' will quickly reveal that while Peter Bros may understand a few high school physics and life sciences concepts, he extrapolates them into giant frameworks of alternate meanings that are not only groundless but don't contribute to science. There is a reason (besides the "conspiracy") that Peter Bros has never submitted any papers to a formal peer review.
Brilliant.......2007-02-05
This book is basically for two types of people, those who don't understand the weather and those who think they do. While some of Bros' books can be difficult reads, this is one of the easier ones to comprehend. If you have a brain and are capable of logical thought, this book will teach you some things about the weather.
As in all of his books, Bros attacks mainstream science with vigor. If you are enamored with mainstream science and actually think that scientists think rationally, this book will annoy you, and you will be inclined to write a hate filled and completely illogical review of the book. Be warned.
