5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Parents.......2004-01-13

With 'C' students or less, we need all the help we can get.

This is one of the few books available that actually helps with developing an interest in learning.

Also great is that the author recognizes different talents and abilities and does not devalue the "divergent-thinking" child, as Thomas Edison thankfully was!

        Book Description

"An authoritative account of the whole campaign. Above all, this book reflects the courage of those who fought and suffered in the defence of Hong Kong." - From Field Marshall Lord Bramall’s Foreword It has been over sixty years since Hong Kong was liberated from the Japanese. In a sharp and detailed portrayal of the period, Oliver Lindsay offers a graphic account of how the British, Canadian, Indian, and Chinese defenders surrendered Hong Kong to the Japanese on Christmas Day 1941 after eighteen days of intense fighting. The Battle for Hong Kong, 1941-1945 is illuminated by the remarkarkable personal story of John Harris. An architectural student, he was pitched into battle as a subaltern in the Royal Engineers and was a prisoner of the Japanese for four years. His powerful testimonial describes the appalling struggle to survive in a Japanese prison camp. Thoroughly researched, particularly through exceptional access to war diaries, The Battle for Hong Kong also explores the catastrophic repercussions of the sudden collapse of the British Army Aid Group (cover name for the agency that handled spies in Southeast Asia) and the resulting suspicion that Britian’s senior intelligence officer was working for the Japanese, the role of military leaders in prolonging the fighting and the serious casualties that resulted, and the true extent of the atrocities inflicted on POWs and internees.

          Book Description

Larry Gragg challenges the prevailing view of the seventeenth-century English planters of Barbados as architects of a social disaster. Most historians have described them as profligate and immoral, as grasping capitalists who exploited their servants and slaves in a quest for quick riches in the cultivation of sugar. Yet, they were more than rapacious entrepreneurs. Like English emigrants to other regions in the empire, sugar planters transplanted many familiar governmental and legal institutions, eagerly started families, abided traditional views about the social order, and resisted compromises in their diet, apparel, and housing, despite their tropical setting. Seldom becoming absentee planters, these Englishmen developed an extraordinary attraction to Barbados, where they saw themselves, as one group of planters explained in a petition, as 'being Englishmen transplanted'.

              Book Description

It is hard enough in many cases simply figuring out whether a person has committed an antisocial act. It is harder still to determine the extent to which he or she intended the act, and why he or she committed it. And most difficult of all is divining whether a person will harm again. The law has increasingly turned to mental health professionals to help address these issues, particularly the last two. Because of their familiarity with and study of human behavior, psychiatrists, psychologists and other clinicians are thought to possess special expertise in assessing culpability and dangerousness. Members of these groups routinely furnish the courts with evaluations of insanity and other mental state at the time of the offense, and even more frequently proffer predictions about future behavior. Both culpability and dangerousness are exceedingly difficult to gauge; even mental health professionals well-versed in the behavioral sciences cannot claim a high degree of reliability in their efforts to address these issues. Though the current trend in evidence law is to demand a rigorous demonstration of scientific validity from expert witnesses, especially when those experts are mental health professionals proffered by the defense, this book argues that this is a mistake. Such a position undermines the fairness of the process and could quite possibly even diminish its reliability, given the defense's constitutional entitlement to tell its story and the inscrutability of past and future mental states. At the same time, Professor Slobogin proposes a number of ways the courts can ensure that experts provide the best possible information about ultimately unknowable past mental states and future behavior.

The authors discuss the difficulties inherent in programming
intuitive skills into an expert system. Examples of programming
patterns of light and dark regions on x-rays are illustrated.
X-rays can be stored into memory and compared to known
diagnostic attributes. With enough experience, you can profile
the optimal decision for many groups of related situations.
This is a good reference work for explaining practical
problems in implementing artificial intelligence algorithms.

                    Book Description

The rush of technology in the 20th century brought more advances than the 11th through 19th centuries combined. Automobiles and aircraft, television and radio, computers and global communications, medical imaging and the leap of humans beyond Earth's atmosphere -- all these were born from the creative spark and labor of scientists and engineers.

How can we ensure that technology is humane and not inane? Can nations mount an effective defense without having to shoot? When computer intelligence exceeds human intelligence, what will it mean to be human? If you could "uninvent" one technology, which would you choose -- and why? How can we prevent ourselves from drowning in high-tech waste? Why should engineers take the long view?

These questions and many others are explored in Engineering Tomorrow: Today's Technology Experts Envision the Next Century by 50 world-renowned experts in all disciplines of science and technology.

Nobel laureates Arno Penzias and Charles H. Townes, Internet co-inventor Vinton G. Cerf, environmentalist Stewart Brand, physicist Freeman J. Dyson, record-holding oceanographer Sylvia A. Earle, arms experts Norman R. Augustine and Richard L. Garwin, and microchip pioneers Jack S. Kilby and Gordon E. Moore are among the 50 featured scientists and engineers who envision technology's potential for the 21st century -- as well as the social responsibility borne by all who are engineering today and planning for tomorrow.

                    4 out of 5 stars Nice Overview.......2002-03-23

This book has a nice, light intro into the areas engineers are working on, and current problems that need to be resolved in the future (how we may use nanotechnology, etc.). Engaging and a good way to get the brain moving, and keep you aware of where the field is going.

3 out of 5 stars book was in textbook form.......2001-03-27

This book was made like a textbook- which actually made it easier to use. And the cover was hardcover- without paper over it (its really nice). Not as much information as I expected. I think the better chapters are: communications, medicine and biology, transportaton, exploration, and war and peace. These chapters are either more interesting and/or have more things in it that have a greater impact on our indiviual lives in the future. Also, there are alot of sections within each chapter that are written by people other than the authors of the book (Janie Fouke, editor, Trudy E. Bell and Dave Dooling, writers) about the future. There are 50 technology experts. Some of them and the titles of what they've written are: Donald R. Scifres: How will information technolgy transform global culture?, Stephen B. Weinstein: How will the Internet affect social relationships?, George S. Moschytz: How can we ensure that technology is humane and not inane? and Sylvia A. Earle: What does it take for people to realize that technology -induced climate change is jeopardizing our very lives? Some are in the chapters they should be in and some really don't have to do with that chapter at all.

Great book! They've taken the worlds leading engineers and ask them specific questions about what the future will hold. Informative and interesting.

                      Book Description

In today's complex world, we have come to rely increasingly on those who have expertise in specific areas and can bring their knowledge to bear on crucial social, political and scientific questions. Taking the viewpoint that experts are consulted when there is something important at stake for an individual, a group, or society at large, Experts in Science and Society explores expertise as a relational concept. How do experts balance their commitment to science with that to society? How does a society actually determine that a person has expertise? What personal traits are valued in an expert? From where does the expert derive authority? What makes new forms of expertise emerge? These and related questions are addressed from a wide range of areas in order to be inclusive, as well as to demonstrate similarities across areas. Likewise, in order to be culturally comparative, this volume includes examples and discussions of experts in different countries and even in different time periods. The topics include the roles of political experts, scientific experts, medical experts, legal experts, and more.

                        Book Description

In Artificial Experts, Collins explains what computers can't do, but he also studies the ordinary and extraordinary things that they can do. He argues that the machines we create are limited because we cannot reproduce in symbols what every community knows, yet we give our machines abilities by the way we embed them in our society. He unfolds a compelling account of the difference between human action and machine intelligence, the core of which is a witty and learned explanation of knowledge itself, of what communities know and the ways in which they know it. H. M. Collins is Professor of Sociology, Head of the School of Social Sciences, and Director of the Science Studies Centre at the University of Bath.
