5 out of 5 stars A GREAT resource.......2001-06-22

I found this book to be a great resouce for all kinds of recipies for my children. I had no idea how to make or store baby food and it really helped with easy, practical, "how to make it" recipies. I didn't want theories or advice just a set of recipies and suggestions on what age to use them. I breastfed both my child for at least a year and found this book to be a welcome addition to supplement their diet while never discouraging my personal choices. I still make many of the foods for my 4 and 6 year olds and the family dinners were great too.

1 out of 5 stars If I could have given no stars I would've..........1999-02-14

I personally found that this book is medically inappropiate advice, and believe that the author should update some of his knowledge. This book has a subject area of food for the 0-6 month old. The author appearently isn't aware of the WHO and AAP's advisment to wait till 6 months of age til introducing any foods other then breastmilk. The book was also not very pro-breastfeeding. In my opinion, this book is not worth the paper it's printed on. I feel that there are many many better books on the subject of preparing your child's babyfood. One ~*GREAT*~ book on this subject is "Natural Baby Food Cookbook" and another is "Baby let's Eat".

3 out of 5 stars wait until babies eat what you eat.......1997-04-09

why the rush toward preparing baby food? Breastfeed as =much as your child wishes for *at least* the first year, and then introduce your regular table food. If you have to mush it up and prepare it specially, it generally isnt' worth bothering with

Book Description

For nine years he fed highly classified information to the KGB. Russia paid him millions of dollars--and promised millions more. He betrayed the identities of the United States' top agents. An act that led to their executions inside the Soviet Union... Never before in American history has one man done so much to sabotage our national security.

Pete Earley is the only writer to conduct fifty hours of one-on-one interviews with CIA mole Aldrich Ames, without a government censor present. He is the only writer to have traveled to Moscow to speak directly to Ames's KGB handlers and with the families of the spies he betrayed. And he is the only writer to have had access to the remarkable CIA mole-hunting team that tracked down and stopped Aldrich Ames.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful page turner.......2006-10-26

I was reading "See No Evil" by Robert Baer and he briefly mentioned Aldrich Ames and decided to read a book on him. While looking for books, I was pleasantly surprised to find one written by Pete Earley. I had read "The Hot House" a couple of years ago and found Earley to be a very clear and detailed writer. I really could not wait to receive the book. My expectations were high and they were met and exceeded. The book details Ames' life from birth, it details his parents, his entry into the CIA, and ultimately his betrayal of the country. The thing I love about Earley is that he leaves no loose ends. You're never left saying, "but what ever happened to..." or "I wonder who that is...". He's a very clear writer who introduces every subject in the book. He explains the facts sharply and thoroughly, and the pacing is perfect. Earley not only gives you the details, but draws you in with a story line that adds suspense. Earley is similar to other great non-fiction writers such as Stephen Ambrose, Jon Krakauer, Simon Winchester, Mark Bowden, or Kurt Eichenwald in that he takes a real event and tells it gripping way.

On the negatives, there was not an index in my book which made it difficult at times. Also, Earley was not able to get interviews with everyone involved, in particular Ames' first wife, but at the time I'm sure not everyone wanted to participate with the media.

The most important aspect of the book is that Aldrich Ames cooperated with Earley with face to face interviews while awaiting trial and later through letters. But Earley did not take everything Ames told him at face value, he is not lazy or sloppy, he fact checked and questioned everything. He even fact checked with Russian KGB which demonstrates how dedicated he was to the subject. Is it definitive? Definitely not because it came out so quickly after Ames arrest (before revelations of Robert Hanssen) but it is an excellent book.

1 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the next book.......2006-06-01

Step by step we are moving to the truth.
The fiction is banal. Hence - one star for the book. The reality is amazing. Hence - 5 stars for the next book on the Ames-Colby case. The next book will be based on Dekov's memoirs.

1 out of 5 stars Far far far... far away form the truth.......2006-05-18

The book is far far far ... far away from the truth. So far, that this book is complete non-sense. By the way, the reality is much more excited than the book.
The biggest crime of the former FBI Director Freeh is that he lies the society. The uninformed society does not have the possibility to protect itself. This is big crime. An excellent example is the killing of the CIA Director William Colby. Freeh preferred to kill Colby, instead to charge him officially. The FBI stories of Ames and Colby are far far... far away form the truth. (If you are interested to read the real story, read the memoirs of Dekov at the Web, Google Groups, Search, "Dekov, Colby".) The society is the loser. The society will pay big money. The society will give victims. This is very dangerous criminal activity against the American people. The persons who praise the Director Freeh will pay the price, too. Their children will die, as the whole nation. The USA Senate must accept a special law, forcing the FBI to say the truth. The truth is the only chance for salvation of the American nation. And the most important - Freeh must go into the jail, as killer of the American nation.

5 out of 5 stars 5 STAR WRITING & STORY FOR A 3 STAR SPY GUY !.......2005-11-09

Ames was unduly lucky to have not been "netted" much sooner. Mr. Earley gives us a very well written piece of work.Ames was certainly not Kim Philby or 007;but He did get away with His betrayal for some years, and that alone makes it worthy for any 20th Century Historian. The little tidbit of a quite 'hot potato'betrayal story on Henry Kissenger is worth the cost of the book alone.Earley is also fair to Ames'American employers at CIA who finally pinch "the mole".

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing.......2004-09-23

Very well-written book. Even more interesting if you are interested in the American intelligence community and how things could go so wrong. Ames was the quintensential bumbling "Maxwell Smart", and it is absolutely incredible that he went unnoticed for so long. A real page turner, even if you know nothing of the CIA and could care less. Highly recommended.

      JOY IN DIVINE WISDOM

Marva Dawn, Joy in Divine Wisdom: Practices of Discernment from Other Cultures and Christian Traditions (Wiley, 2006).

How is one supposed to make wise decisions in difficult situations? What is 'God's will' for my life?

Wise discernment is a very valuable tool for Christian living - or any kind of living for that matter. Problem is, in Western individualistic cultures we are often denied access to collective wisdom. This is the essence of Marva Dawn's most helpful book: she takes us to African, Asian, Latin American and some other 'traditional' cultures, suggesting that they have much to teach us in this important area.

Marva Dawn is an erudite person, familiar with grass-roots spiritualities and Christian mystics (but not, in this book, with Christian theologians - except for Bonhoeffer - which might be to her and our advantage on this topic). And she's prolific, with about 20 books published in the same number of years (one co-authored with Eugene Peterson). She tells many stories - some of the most moving about her own struggle with cancer and kidney disease. She's also traveled widely, thus testing her theories/ theologies in many settings.

She starts with grace: 'In humility our good choices are made possible by our gracious gift-giving God.' And two universal practices: listening to our dreams and 'waiting in silence'. Then she suggests we take words seriously: 'As Abraham Heschel notes, in our time words no longer commit their speakers to live them'. God's Word in Scripture is of paramount importance: with the Celts Marva Dawn urges us to place Scripture above reason and tradition, learn large parts of it by heart, and live according to its guidance.

She moves then to a core area of her thesis: if we are to live wisely we must 'rectify names', that is, 'call a spade a spade' in the context of a community's gathered wisdom - essential for discerning 'real realities'. Further, we must have a passion to 'live with purity of heart in accordance with our focal concerns'.

Next, let us prioritize virtues and morals such as sabbath- keeping, eschewing societal 'control' in terms of consumerism, living quietly to rest our 'chattering mind', the prayer of 'listening' - all classical 'spiritual disciplines'.

Her chapter on communal discernment is brilliant, especially her description of Mennonite practices. They have traditions of silent waiting, listening, writing down Spirit-guided thoughts, and sharing these with others - practices which are antithetical to the 'business meeting' methodologies of Western corporations and churches. Consensus is a preferred outcome to a 'majority vote' in this process.

In two chapters - on hospitality/welcoming and reconciliation - she underscores the kind of character out of which we make our best decisions. Then she faces the reality that we make our choices against the backdrop of a broken, sinful world: 'good and godly decisions are not easy; our very discernment processes might sometimes cause us suffering, even as they force us to ask whether we are willing to undergo more struggles because of the choices we might make.' So we need to belong to a community that is willing to enter into our suffering and to enfold us in its celebrations. Rainer Maria Rilke said it well:

O tell me, poet, what do you do? - I praise
But how can you endure to meet the gaze
Of deathly and of monstrous things? - I praise.

Because of our human limitations and ignorance, there are no 'surefire methods' but if we employ all these approaches/disciplines together we will be more likely to discern choices from God's perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Brief but not superficial.......2003-04-14

The book is a brief history of medieval Ireland. It covers the times from the prehistoric times to the fifteenth century. However, brief does not mean superficial. The author chooses some subjects he is interested in and discusses them trying to be impartial - from many different points of view. He does not try to describe the past in detail, but rather to point out the most important moments, problems and aspects in Irish history. Richter also poses some questions significant from the point of view of a contemporary person some of which remain open.
The book is suitable for beginners as it is quite short and written in a comprehensible way as well as for people truly interested in the matter thanks to reliable bibliography record and references. It helps to understand the unusual political organization and the complicated and quite uncommon social structure of the Island in the middle ages. Obviously, history of medieval Ireland was greatly determined by the history of church, that is why the book deals mainly with the church's history, which was not less interesting in Ireland than political history. It is a very good book for a great start.

This collection of Native American histories written by anthropologists, native peoples, ethnobotanists, and art historians covers the late prehistoric period through the present. Wampanoag, Pequot, Mohegan, Narragansett, Schaghticoke, Penobscot, and Passamaquoddy peoples are chronicled by recognized scholars who focus on pertinent issues related to each tribe, such as European contact and trade, native foods, charismatic leaders, native politics and survival strategies, communities, and arts and symbolism. Introduced and edited by Laurie Weinstein, the author of the renowned 1989 volume on the Wampanoag, this work fills a large gap in the literature by and about native northeastern peoples of America.

This concise and reliable introduction to Taoism brings a fresh dimension to a tradition that has found a natural place in Western societies. Combining Taoist sacred texts with current scholarship, it surveys Taoism's ancient roots, contemporary heritage and role in daily life.
From Taoism's spiritual philosophy to its practical perspectives on life and death, self-cultivation, morality, society, leadership and gender, Russell Kirkland's essential guide reveals the real contexts behind concepts such as Feng Shui and Tai Chi. Written for those seeking a genuine introduction to an often misrepresented tradition, it highlights Taoism's key elements and explains its early origins and modern transformations.

This is the book for both the layman and expert collector of Native American (Navajo) arts. The authors have divided the book into sections ranging from rug weaving, sand painting, pottery to jewellery and ornaments and many more. The pictures can only be classified as exquisite - very well taken and the pieces are typically of museum quality. Indeed most of the works are either collectibles or award-winners in private collection or museums. This volume is bound to be a feast for the eyes of the art collector/amateur alike. The authors also went to great lengths to interview various well-known artists regarding their works and lives. I picked this book up after I purchased a sandpainting and wanted to read up more about this art form. The artist whose work I bought, Joe Benally, had his works described in this book. And I was able to not only view some of his other works, but also learn about the origin and evolution of sandpainting as it is today. A great buy at the discount price at Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Answers From The Abyss.......2002-04-03

When I teach plate tectonics to my high school students, I ask them to consider the difficulty of building a comprehensive theory of the surface of the Earth when you don't know what three quarters of that surface looks like. I also mention how amazing it is that Alfred Wegener got as far as he did with continental drift without the detailed knowledge of the sea-floor that led to the modern theory of plate tectonics. David Lawrence has done a supremely good job at telling the adventurous and exciting history of plate tectonics in his book Upheaval From The Abyss. This book has got it all: ships, submarines, sonar, scientific [and emotional] arguments, sea-floor spreading, subduction, explosives and so much more. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to go deeper into the history of plate tectonics than does the standard cardboard cutout version found in most textbooks, and especially for those interested laypeople not ready to dive into Naomi Oreskes' excellent, but highly detailed The Rejection Of Continental Drift. I really enjoyed Upheaval From The Abyss and feel that others will, too.
