Book Description

From now on, backseat pleas of "Are we there yet?" will be replaced with "Can we go for another ride?" Introducing ALL-AMERICAN CAR-I-OKE-yes, karaoke for the car-a kit including a book of 15 great family sing-along tunes and activities galore, an accompanying CD of music, and three booklets of lyrics for the back seat and the way-back.

Sing a gutsy, rocking version of Proud Mary-and learn some cool seat-dancing moves to go with it. Put on a show voice for Give My Regards to Broadway. Play a mad-lib version of mix-and-match lyrics with the Are We There Yet Blues. Pair off for the cowboy duet Red River Valley, raise a tear with Danny Boy, put on your best hillbilly voice and tell the story of Big Rock Candy Mountain (with some new child-friendly lyrics). And take the Car-i-oke Challenge: Try to hit the high note-land of the free-eeeeeee!-of The Star-Spangled Banner.

The CD, recorded in Nashville, ranges from big instrumental productions with full horns to jug-band fun; vocals are added where needed to help the singers along. The 64-page book includes full lyrics to all the songs, plus tips on singing, road song quizzes, travel trivia, lessons in back seat drumming, and other musical activities. The three booklets have just the lyrics. It's an all-American, all-family musical extravaganza.

5 out of 5 stars Great activity!.......2007-09-04

This was good for at least an hour of no-bickering drive time. It isn't "kiddie" music, so it's entertaining for the adults, as well. Several extra copies of the lyrics mean you can lose one without harm. The cover and binding are durable, to put up with the abuses of living in a family vehicle. I'm looking at the holiday version next.

5 out of 5 stars Road Tested and Approved!.......2007-01-23

I road tested this item with my three children on a long car ride a couple of years ago. It was a huge hit with my family, so I highly recommend it at my website [...]. Even after two years, we still use it frequently on trips, so it has given us more than our money's worth.

It comes with a CD for the music and several extra copies of the lyrics in smaller booklets for everyone in the car (no fighting!). The CD does a great job of giving "musical cues" when you are supposed to start singing, and there is such a variety that there is sure to be something that everyone will like - including the adults!

One of our favorites is the "make your own blues" song. My kids loved making up their own lines for that song in addition to the suggested lyrics. They also really love "Big Rock Candy Mountain" which was full of hilarious kid humor. The backseat drumming is also very popular. One thing we also love to do with this is to practice singing the Star Spangled Banner together. It can be a hard song to sing sometimes, but my kids are now pros and can belt out our National Anthem with pride.

We never go on a road trip without this item. I'll be buying the Christmas version of this next.

4 out of 5 stars Entertained my kids on a long car ride.......2006-11-03

I wasn't sure how this would go over with my 7 and 9 year old girls, but we had a lot of fun with it on a l-o-n-g car ride home from vacation this summer. Not all the songs were familiar to us, but learning the lyrics was part of the fun.
This gets three thumbs up from the girls and me and one from my husband, who was driving, and glad no one was complaining about being in the car so long.

              Book Description

The controversies in South Carolina, Georgia, and Texas over the display of Confederate symbols illustrate the power and saliency of the myth of the Lost Cause (the Confederacy was doomed from the start in its struggle against the superior might of the Union, but its forces fought heroically against all odds for the cause of states' rights). In reality, this was and is an elaborate and intentional effort on the part of Southerners to rationalize the secession and the war itself. In this volume, nine historians describe and analyze the Lost Cause, identifying the ways in which it falsifies history. They have created a thoughtful and provocative volume that makes a major contribution to Civil War historiography.

3 out of 5 stars Not all I had hoped, but some bright spots.......2005-03-26

I was most interested in the generalship of Grant versus the actual (not glorified) generalship of Lee. I was hoping to find some confirmation of my suspicion that Lee really wasn't that great and Grant really wasn't all that bad. To some degree, the book tries to do this with a limited success. It takes Lee down a notch from his almost divine pedestal in the eyes of some. But I found it hard to find a convincing argument that Lee was anything but a great, more-then-competent general.
I see no problem with Southerners focusing on Lee's military greatness with some pride. Despite the causes some generals fight for, we can still admire their cunning as military commanders, Rommel is a great example much like Lee. Besides, the North got the ultimate hero in Lincoln who most Americans hold in the highest regard, he transcends the Presidency itself.
Where I get upset is with marginalizing slavery as anything but THE central issue of the War. Whether the participants at the time knew it or not, Slavery was what the War was all about. I think the people in the North, particularly the Republic soldiers, knew what it was about. They voted overwhelmingly for Lincoln in a clear show of support for the cause. The South was, and still is to a large degree, in denial and this is where the book does a much better job. Chopping away at what should be called the State's Rights Myth of the Confederacy. It traces the evolution of the Southern response to defeat from the immediate catastrophe of the War to the ultimate historical revision that is the Lost Cause. Other places where the book lays out a strong case against the Lost Cause includes: the myth that the South was solidly unified, that its defeat was inevitable and that its soldiers were braver and more committed then their Northern counterparts.
It's a very necessary book. It is important for people to remember always who the good guys were and who the bad guys were. Few other conflicts in history have had so clear a line drawn between Evil. The cause the Republic fought for was the most noble of all, human freedom. It's a national tragedy if we ever allow that to be forgotten or replaced by the bad guy's interpretation of that conflict.

              1 out of 5 stars A Terrible Propaganda Piece.......2004-07-28

The shamelessly teleological approach to research displayed in this book is its most memorable feature. The ability of the authors to disregard 25 years worth of scholarship on Southern nationalism is only the most blatant methodological crime committed in what is without a doubt one of the worst examples of research I have ever encountered.

2 out of 5 stars The War Continues.......2002-11-27

Somewhat convoluted approach to the Southern cause, but now that I have finished the book, it is not worth reading. Perhaps it is worth checking out of the public library to grasp the "Northern" view point, but overall, the book is too partisan.

2 out of 5 stars an important propaganda piece.......2002-10-13

Expect to see this volume show up on required reading lists for students in Politically Correct history classes across the nation. For students who find themselves in such classes, I recommend
              (1) the excellent review of this predictable propaganda piece found at...
              and
              (2) any good reference on the central fallacy of it's editors: anachronistically reading current prejudices and partisan controversies into past events and calling it "history". This type of tendentious writing of polemical tracts is well treated in the excellent, albeit somewhat dated: Whig Interpretation of History by Herbert Butterfield.

This is not to say that the mythological elements of "The Lost Cause" are beyond criticism. Another book, which might also be on at least a few "Politically Correct" reading lists, but much better than this collection, is "Look Away!: A History of the Confederate States of America" by William C. Davis.

You can find more about Butterfield's and Davis' books by searching for them on this site.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Essays about Southern Civil War History.......2002-05-06

Having just finished this book, I see why some of the essays have caused some controversy. It takes a hard look at the facts of the war, versus what has been presented as accurate history by many Southern leaders and writers. Simply put, some of the authors openly question many commonly held views, particularly those proposed by people interested in justifying the South's loss, or reasons for leaving the Union.

Overall, the essays are solid: some great, some good, and a few are only okay. I found Alan Nolan's, Gary Gallagher's, and Jeffrey Wert's essays to be most compelling. They are all well written, researched, and argued. Also, the topics they cover are interesting. Although I do not agree with Alan Nolan's low opinion of General Lee as a soldier, the rest of his essay takes many of the myths of the "Lost Cause" head-on, and dispells them convincinly.

Two of the essays I did not find very exciting: Keith Bohannon's, or Charles Holden's. The topic were too narrow for my taste. The other essays are all good, and helped add to my understanding of the war.

I recommend this book to anyone who is a Civil War "buff", or student of the war. If you think that the war was not fought over slavery, but only states rights, you should explore the discussion of this topic in numerous essays.

              Book Description

For nearly a quarter of a century, Pulitzer Prize nominee William C. Davis has been one of our best writers on the Civil War. His books--including Breckinridge: Statesman, Soldier, Symbol; Jefferson Davis: The Man and His Hour; and "A Government of Our Own": The Making of the Confederacy--have garnered numerous awards and enlightened and entertained an avid readership. The Cause Lost extends that tradition of excellence with provocative new insights into the myths and realities of an endlessly fascinating subject.

In these pages, Davis brings into sharp focus the facts and fictions of the South's victories and defeats, its tenacious struggle to legitimize its cause and defeat an overpowering enemy, and its ultimate loss of will. He debunks long-standing legends, offers irrefutable evidence explaining Confederate actions, and contemplates the idealism, naivete, folly, and courage of the military leadership and would-be founding fathers.

Among the most misunderstood, Davis contends, was Jefferson Davis. Often branded as enigmatic and incompetent, the Confederate president was simply a decent and committed leader whose mistakes were magnified by the war's extraordinary demands. Davis scrutinizes Jefferson Davis' relationship with his generals--most of whom were unproved talents or cronies with proven deficiencies--and reveals why only Robert E. Lee succeeded in winning Davis' confidence through flattery, persuasion, and a sense of responsibility. He also examines the myths and memories of the nearly deified Stonewall Jackson and of John C. Breckinridge, the only effective Confederate secretary of war.

Davis also illustrates why the cause of the war--a subject of long-standing controversy--boils down to the single issue of slavery; why Southerners, 90 percent of whom didn't own slaves, were willing to join in the battle to defend their homeland; how the personalities, tactics, and styles of the armies in the turbulent West differed greatly from those in the East; what real or perceived turning points influenced Southern decision making; and how mythology and misinterpretations have been perpetuated through biography, history, literature, and film.

Revealing the Confederacy's myths for what they really are, Davis nevertheless illustrates how much those myths inform our understanding of the Civil War and its place in Southern and American culture.

This book is part of the Modern War Studies series.

4 out of 5 stars Destroying the Lost Cause myths.......2006-11-25

William C. Davis, famous and rather prolific Civil War historians, faces the myths that constitute the Lost Cause doctrine and destroys a lot of them.
The book is a collection of articles published previously on several reviews: they analize the relationships between Jefferson Davis and his generals, the forgotten fronts of war (South Carolina, Trans-Mississippi), and -last but not least- the southern attempts to find explanations to the defeat.
The second half of the book is the better. The chapters devoted to the "forgotten fronts" are pheraphs too short and generic.
              However a very intriguing book.

4 out of 5 stars Not indepth but..........2006-08-29

Mr. Davis writes for popular history in that he does not go too deep into any single issue but that he does reduce issues to the point that most readers can understand them. In this book he takes on several of the most enduring "histories" of The Lost Cause of the Southern view of the Civil War and for the most part effectively refutes them. He has done popular history a service by entering into this particular fray.

Most Americans recall of the Civil War revolves around what can loosely be called history, much of which is either partiallly or deeply wrong. Not all states for instance that left the US did so explictly mentioning slavery, here Alabama comes to mind (the majority of the CS did name it the first or chief reason for secession). The Lincoln pre war tax impost was a reason but outside of SC is seldom mentioned in any other state paper and at best is a minor reason or excuse for the war that resulted. Slavery and Federal interference (or threat of interference) with it, constituted the chief reason for secession. Of course the majority of Southern men fought to defend their homes, one can argue here poor men were manipulated into fighting for the rich slave holders if you take the view of poor always fighting rich men's fights.
However, this and the failure of the CSA government, other then the military, to acomplish much in the course of the War is today only now being noticed or studied.

Reading several of the previous reviewers it is obvious that no amount of scholarship will change their minds regarding the War, its causes, or lasting effects. Here is proof positive of Mr. Davis' points regarding The Lost Cause; yes history was rewritten, but by the losers. From the effects of various battles, the disregard in many Southern partisans' minds for the Western theater, hatred for those who after the War decided they were Americans again (Longstreet for instance), reasons why War came about, and coming up with reasons why the South lost all have been so colored by revisionists that non-Americans often wonder if the South had really won but allowed the North to think otherwise...

There are many books coming out now on the Southern homefront now that are direct contradictions to this revised version of history. The South was never monolithic in white opinion (look at CSA desertion rates, voting records on secession, & Unionist activity behind Southern lines) nor was it a simple all blacks being pro-Union but there were no New York or black Confederate units either. This history is complex enough that the simplistic Lost Cause version is slowly being crushed, the fusion of whats left will doubtless be closer to the truth.

4 out of 5 stars The truth hurts.......2006-02-01

I found the book refreshing. Especialy the chapter titled "Myths and Realities of the Confederacy." (Part Four #11) That section realy pulled together a lot of truths to combat the myths that have been foisted on the public by Southern writers since the war ended. Defeat is a bitter pill for anyone to swallow and more difficult for the prideful people of the south. To this day many will not admit to it.

Mr. Davis is an accomplished author and historian with whom I do not always agree but with this book he has "hit the nail on the head."

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Thoughts on Civil War Basics, Mainly Confederate.......2002-08-09

William C. (Jack) Davis is a prolific author on the Civil War whose books (and talks) are both extremely well-researched and entertaining. He would be on anyone's short list of the best Civil War historians, and is the History Book Club's reviewer for new Civil War books. His books specialize on the Confederate side of the recent unpleasantness between the states. Like his other books, this one is well worth reading for his illuminating insight into topics such as the relationship of Jefferson Davis to his generals, especially Lee, Johnston, Beauregard, Jackson, and Breckinridge; the Confederate secret service and the 1864 U.S. presidential election; and the reasons behind the development of the post-Confederate philosophy known as the Lost Cause. Only one chapter deals with the lost cause--for a detailed book on the lost cause, read Gary Gallagher and Alan Nolan's "The Myth of the Lost Cause and Civil War History." But Davis's Cause Lost is a must read for anyone interested in the Civil War.

3 out of 5 stars A Revisionist view at best..........2002-05-14

To answer the last reviewer's comments, Yes, Slavery was a part of the reason for sucession, But it was not the whole +reason+. Several reasons brought about the war. One reason was the tarriff that the Northern States favored that was harmful to Southern Farm exports. And yet another reason was the idea of the Fundamental Concept of the Federal Goverment. Lincoln, believed in the Concept of a Strong Centralized Goverment while our Forefathers believed in a limited Goverment. Try reading a copy of the Declaration of Independence. The word united is in lower case letters while States is capitalized. I strongly suggest reading Jefferson's Davis book on the Rise and Fall of the Confederate Goverment. It is far more eye opening into the intent of the Confederate States then a History teacher's opinion. By the way, My Great/Great Grandfather fought not to defend *Slavery* but to defend his home from an armed invasion. He fought for his home plain and simple. Try reading the book "Black Confederates" to explore a little known part of the Civil War.And to answer the question of "Rich man's war, Poor man's fight", that is not always the case. A man is willing to fight and die for the truth, But how many will fight and die for what they know is a lie? A Liberal minded can not understand the strong word "Conviction" but that is why they fought.

                                      Book Description

Plasma Spraying of Metallic and Ceramic Materials D. Matejka, Institute of Materials and Mechanics, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava, Czechoslovakia and B. Benko, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Slovak Technical College, Bratislava, Czechoslovakia Plasma spraying of metallic and ceramic powders is one of the many areas of thermal spraying technology which has developed rapidly in recent years. This book describes the theoretical principles of plasma spraying as well as practical applications. The physical and mechanical properties of sprayed coatings are discussed, as well as methods for their evaluation. The book also includes guidelines on choosing the appropriate spraying powder for a particular industrial application and attention is paid to the problems of the bonding of sprayed coatings to the substrate. The technological process of spraying flat, rotatory and internal surfaces is also discussed and the book is concluded with a section on the safety aspects of plasma spraying and reference to the hazards.
