New parents can end up with too many choices, and it seems like a separate book exists for every stage of life--which can be overwhelming when one's reading time is limited. A Good Start in Life aims to reduce the stress, compiling basic information about child development from conception to age 6 in one concise book. Written by a neuroscientist and an educator, you'll find easy-to-digest information about the physical stages of early childhood, as well as straightforward suggestions that make parenting a little easier as your child grows.

In each chapter, you follow a small girl through her life changes. Her second birthday party is a typical madhouse, while by her sixth you can see all types of developed personalities and interpersonal skills at play. Each party is used to demonstrate specific developments, and it's both entertaining and educational to see the kids evolve from playing separately to choosing up sides for a baseball game. Pictures and charts of developmental milestones are included for quick reference, and topics like building security, setting limits, and preparing for school are addressed clearly and briefly. While no special situation is discussed in depth, parents will receive an excellent general overview of what they can expect from life with a little one. --Jill Lightner

Book Description

The social and cognitive development of children is a complex yet crucial process for parents to understand, and though there are numerous books on child development, A Good Start in Life stands out from the rest as an acclaimed and important work on the connections between childhood brain and behavioral development.

This new paperback edition, updated with the latest information and new material, offers parents and educators a rich and invaluable resource on how children learn to live in family and society from birth to age six. Norbert Herschkowitz, MD, and his wife Elinore Chapman Herschkowitz draw on their lifetime of experience in studying infants and children to explain how brain development shapes a child’s personality and behavior. Organizing their narrative by age, the authors examine a wide range of social development issues, from appropriate rule-setting to the development of key character elements in a child such as moral sensibility, temperament, language development, playing, aggression, impulse control, and empathy.

Some of the most popular features of the hardcover edition are retained here, including the question-and-answer section that concludes each chapter with real questions posed by parents to Dr. Herschkowitz, as well as brain maps and charts that display milestones in the development of various skills. Additional new material addresses concerns about prematurely born babies and the issue of resilience in children.

In today’s world, children grow up in an incredibly complex and highly sensory environment. A Good Start in Life offers a clear, concise, and richly detailed guide infused with warmth and encouragement that enables parents and educators to constructively stimulate and shape their children’s cognitive and social development.

“A must read . . . a gift to all parents.”--Rosemarie T. Truglio, vice-president, Education and Research, Sesame Workshop

“Do the first three years of life represent a critical period for all aspects of development? Are we the product of our genes or of our environment? Does early exposure to Mozart make for smarter babies? The answers to these and other pressing questions are skillfully and elegantly answered in this wonderful book, which I enthusiastically recommend.”
--Charles A. Nelson, Distinguished McKnight University Professor of Child Psychology, Neuroscience, and Pediatrics, University of Minnesota

“This delightfully written book . . . is not merely a how-to book, but a book about understanding how a child truly grows.”
--Guy McKhann, MD, The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine

5 out of 5 stars A good start for PARENTS!.......2007-05-17

I really think that all parents should get to know their child from the brain perspective. This book provides a thorough and easy-to-follow overview of the child's growing brain. The idea of brain-based education is really catching on these days. Why not brain-based parenting? See also Power Brain Kids

5 out of 5 stars excellent overview from a professional viewpoint.......2007-03-12

I was really impressed with this book because the information is all based in scientific fact AND it's a quick read. It's refreshing to be reading about the results of scientific studies from authors that are compelling writers and have a sense of humor. To summarize the content, child rearing is about common sense, but the gems in this book are the descriptions of scientific studies that explain the reasons why parents and children do what they do. There are a lot of passages worth quoting to a fellow parent! I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Informative and enlightening.......2003-06-15

Norbert Herschkowitz's book may not be as inspiring a read as The Prenatal Prescription by Peter Nathanielsz, but it's filled with valuable information on giving your baby the healthiest start in life, both prebirth and after birth. The information on how a baby's brain works (e.g. language acquisition) is particularly interesting.

5 out of 5 stars A Reassuring Guide for Parents and Grandparents.......2002-08-20

I wish I had already had this book when my own children were growing up, but now I can consult it to follow and understand the development of my grandchildren. The authors' vast expertise has not kept them from writing a parent-friendly, easily-accessible-for-the-layperson book that answers the questions we all have as we watch our children progress: Are they developing as they should, according to the proper timeline? Am I being too demanding? Not enough? What makes it all work? We know our children are miracles of nature, but the text gives us a wider understanding of why and how. It quells doubts and cheers us, as we watch the "sample" children, so like our own, change from day to day.

        Book Description

For over a hundred years British and Indian troops were engaged on the North-West Frontier of India policing the tribes, mounting expeditions, and guarding against the ever-present threat from Russia. Populated mainly by Pathans, one of the fiercest warrior races on earth, the Frontier came to be known as 'The Grim' by generations of British soldiers. This book details not only the three Afghan wars but also the issues surrounding Chitral, Malakand and Tirah. Colour illustrations and photographs offer a rare glimpse into life on the Frontier, illuminating Lord Curzon's remark, 'No man who has read a page of Indian history will ever prophesy about the frontier'.

              Book Description

This book is a fascinating biography of Eileen Power, a major British historian who once ranked in fame alongside Tawney, Trevelyan and Toynbee. Using letters, diaries and reminiscences, Maxine Berg recreates the life of this charismatic personality, describing, for the first time, Power's remarkable intellectual and scholarly achievements at a time when she was acting very much outside the female role. Power's ability, coupled with her vivid personality, made her history compelling reading and listening to a generation of students.

Inventing Norman Cantor: Confessions Of A Medievalist by Norman F. Cantor (one of America's foremost medieval historians and a leading contributor to Medieval scholarship) combines personal autobiography with experienced-based insights into the field of Medieval Studies from 1948 to 2001, as seen through the prism of his own academic career. Humorous anecdotes, wry observations, insights into academia, and more abound in this involving and informative memoir. The sequel to his very popular book Inventing The Middle Ages, and deftly organized into seven major sections (The Last Roundup; British Humanism; The Culmination of the Old Culture; Troubled University and the New Culture; Leadership and Power; Writing and Teaching; Knowing More About Academe), Inventing Norman Cantor is a superlative read and a welcome addition to Medieval Studies and Academic Biography collections and reading lists.

                Book Description

Written over a 30-year period by the late Patrick Wormald, one of the leading authorities on the Early Middle Ages, this book is a collection of studies on Bede and early English Christian society. Its central concern is the establishment of a Christian community within a warrior society, and the way this was charted, not always sympathetically, by Bede and other writers of his time. A subsidiary theme is the emergence of a self-consciously English Church, which was in turn the foundation of an English state. An appendix considers Bede 's treatment of St. Hilda, the first great English female saint. The book will be welcomed for its systematic integration of the religious, intellectual, political and social history of the English in their first Christian centuries.

These five seventh-century religious texts cast light not only on the development of the church in Visigothic Spain and its internal politics, but also on its, at times troubled, relationship with the Visigothic state and the history of that state itself, particularly in the period when the Visigoths changed their adherence from Arian to Trinitarian Christianity.

"...these intriguing texts will help dispel the still prevalent notion that Visigothic Spain was some kind of 'Dark Age'"—Bulletin of Hispanic Studies

                          Book Description

                          R. W. Southern (1912 -2001) is widely regarded as one of the greatest medieval historians. His first book, The Making of the Middle Ages (1953), translated into many languages and never out of print, is recognized as a classic. This volume contains the series of reflections on medieval historical writing that Southern produced during his tenure as President of the Royal Historical Society, supplemented by his occasional pieces on two related subjects: the nature of academic history and appreciations of other medievalists, both his teachers and his contemporaries. Their publication here in book format makes these writings by a master medievalist accessible to the wider audience they deserve. The material is introduced by R. J. Bartlett, himself a prominent medievalist, who sheds light on Southern 's outlook and the importance of his work.

                          Book Description

Long overlooked in standard reference works, pioneering women medievalists finally receive their due in Women Medievalists and the Academy. This comprehensive edited volume brings to life a diverse collection of inspiring figures through memoirs, biographical essays, and interviews. Covering many different nationalities and academic disciplines—including literature, philology, history, archaeology, art history, theology (or religious studies), and philosophy—each essay delves into one woman’s life, intellectual contributions, and efforts to succeed in a male-dominated field. Together, these extraordinary personal histories constitute a new standard reference that speaks to a growing interest in women’s roles in the development of scholarship and the academy.
The collection begins in the seventeenth century with Elizabeth Elstob and continues through the twentieth century, and includes—among more than seventy profiles—such important figures as Anna Jameson, Lina Eckenstein, Georgiana Goddard King, Eileen [Edna Le Poer] Power, Dorothy L. Sayers, Dorothy Whitelock, Susan Mosher Stuard, Marcia Colish, and Caroline Walker Bynum, among others.

This beautiful, fat book contains informative and inspiring biographical sketches of women scholars. The careers of these amazing women raise subtle and important questions about the obstacles historically encountered by women seeking to engage the life of the mind. There have been many books written about the careers of male scholars and editors, of which *The Professor and the Madman* is only the most famous. No other book tells the stories of such women. These stories are not scandalous, but they are true, and they are indeed and for the most part heartening.

                            Book Description

The most prominent Byzantine historian of the European Middle Ages, the princess Anna Komnene is most famous for the epic Alexiad , which marks a departure from the tradition of Byzantine history writing. It provides a vivid account of the state and society of Byzantium and the many clashes with the West during the period of the First Crusade (1081-1118).
This significant critical anthology explores the life of Anna Komnene, the Byzantine context in which she wrote, and the impact of the Alexiad on her times and on subsequent historical works of literature.

This book is a wonderful source of information. I am a senior nuring student in my final semester, and we have been using this book for three semesters now. There are areas that are sometimes confusing to read, but on the whole, it gives pretty good assessment criteria, nursing diagnoses and interventions.
