5 out of 5 stars Witty and insightful!!!.......2007-05-22

I'm not one for reviews but this had to be said. This author is both witty and instightful. What a colorful and honest way to describe raising a family! I was impressed with the descriptions and faith this author brings to the pages. I could feel the cheerios bouncing off my face as I was reading!

I would recommend this to anyone who is either planning a family or has a few spilling juice in the house today.

    ENGAGEMENT CALENDAR
"Over the course of four terrible years, the American Civil War took 620,000 lives, devastated large swaths of the South, created streams of refugees, disrupted families and friendships--and redefined the course of the nation. The war decided the two essential questions that sparked it: The United States was, and would ever remain, indivisible. And human slavery could not be countenanced in a country dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. ¶ This calendar draws on the unrivaled resources of the Library of Congress to showcase fifty-three Civil War images--contemporary photographs, drawings, and prints; chromolithographs, posters, maps, and documents. Excerpts from letters and diaries offer moving testimony of sacrifice and courage. Concise essays synopsize the war's major figures and its progress on many fronts; wartime events are noted for each day of the year. ¶ 112 page, spiral-bound weekly engagement calendar with 53 images, and clear plastic covers. Size: 6 5/8 by 8". Calendar features 53 weekly grids and 2006 yearly grid. Includes international holidays. ISBN 0-7649-3040-0. Click on the small picture to see an inside page. Additional publications available in our American Military History section."--© Pomegranate

    WALL CALENDAR
"Maps, battle scenes, portraits, excerpts from diaries and letters, daily entries charting the war's events, historical essays, and biographical sketches comprise this magnificent calendar from the Library of Congress. Forty-two color illustrations and black-and-white photographs portray a vivid representation of the devastating war, while the testimonies of sacrifice and courage from the Union and Confederate soldiers offer intimate and detailed descriptions. ¶ 13 x 12" wall calendar (opens to 13 x 24"). 3 out of 5 stars Very few correlations to Dates..........2006-03-16

The calendar does not put a historic event on each day as implied in the title. It is mostly trivia (ex: Feb 14: defines "candle-lighting". It meant dusk or twilight back then. Feb. 24 defines "dead meat". It meant a corpse (use started in 1860).

I purchased the calendar to give me a daily feel for the progression of the war using historical battle or political events for that particular day. It does not do this by a long shot (even with a minie' ball).

But, I still enjoy the trivia that it does offer. I encourage the publisher to either change the name of the calendar to Civil War Trivia or (preferably) truly make it a day-to-day calendar of pertinent events in the Civil War.

3 out of 5 stars CW daily calendar.......2006-02-28

The 2005 Day to Day calendar was fantastic. Lots of Civil War period information and trivia. The 2006 calendar is a bit diassapointing. Too much modern trivia, such as Civil War Movie and Reenacting information.

Palmerston, he evoked an era of gunboat diplomacy. WHy? Because he understood the British empire rested on its ability to deter aggression and his gutsy vindictive nature of sending the royal navy anywhere it took to protect the honor of England. With the exception of churchill, Palmerston was a great defender of empire, uniquly british. THis is a must read for anyone wanting to understand how America should be acting in the face of terror. Palmerston was the ultimate pre-emptionist.

            Book Description

Palmerston and the Politics of Foreign Policy, 1846-1855 offers a new interpretation of mid-Victorian politics and of the career of one of the period’s most important figures, Lord Palmerston, through an analysis of the domestic context for his foreign policy. Combining a traditional high political approach with a broad examination of popular politics, this important study provides a fresh reading of the politics of Palmerston’s foreign policy and its bearing on the development of the Liberal Party, as well as considering its relationship to Palmerston’s own political position.

                Product Description

In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have occasionally been asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services in New Zealand. The purpose of this study is to understand the density of demand within New Zealand and the extent to which Palmerston North might be used as a point of distribution within Oceana. From an economic perspective, however, Palmerston North does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries, rather, it represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for Palmerston North over the next five years for hundreds of industries, categories and products. The goal of this report is to report the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by Palmerston North when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in Palmerston North used by the space industry to launch satellites. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by the area served by Palmerston North. Without Palmerston North, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the population in New Zealand, Oceana, or the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both Oceana and Palmerston North. The data presented are the result of various spatial econometric and time-series forecasting models which, for each category presented, are applied to forecast and allocate demand across all countries of the world and major distribution centers or centers of dominant influence within each country. This is accomplished knowing that economic fundamentals (e.g. income) generally vary from one city to another within a given country over time. In this report, I report the allocation for each category for Palmerston North as an area of dominant influence in New Zealand and, potentially, Oceana. Important Caveat. Category definitions may overlap. The sum of multiple categories, therefore, may double count.

                              Book Description

In their drive to improve their competitiveness in the world economy, MENA countries are faced with the challenges of improving productive and allocative efficiency; reducing bureaucratic ineffectiveness, red tape, corruption, and excessive government intrusion; and improving the poor service delivery that has characterized the region for some time. Most of these challenges cannot be met without changing outdated regulations that have become unnecessary burdens. The challenges are urgent to meet in the case of certain key sectors -- telecommunications, e-commerce, banking, and international trade, in particular -- whose role has become increasingly important in a more globalized world. This volume focuses on the operating environments, institutional requirements, and links and interconnections between regulatory reform in different sectors of MENA economies.

                                Book Description

This volume brings together a set of studies analyzing different aspects of food and agriculture in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). This sector is of crucial importance to the MENA economies, especially in terms of employment. Agriculture is particularly important for the poor, both on the consumption side - large parts of their budget is allocated to food - and as a source of incomes as most of the poor live in rural areas where agriculture dominates. Agriculture production in MENA is severely constrained by water scarcity and low, irregular rainfall. Sustainability is a major concern in many parts of the region as the quality of land and water resources is deterioration and scarcity becomes more severe due to growing competition from other parts of the economy. The fact that the region relies on imports for a large share of its food consumption is a major concern for policymakers who view this as a threat to national food security and a source of political vulnerability.

The studies included in this volume range from regional overview to micro studies. The chapters with a country focus cover issues that are recurrent in many MENA countries, giving them a broader relevance. The analyses cover policy issues in a wide range of areas - water, drought management, agricultural technology, producer and consumer subsidies, domestic food distribution, and foreign trade - and discusses how coordinated policies in these and other areas can contribute to more rapid, sustainable growth and poverty reduction.

                                  Book Description

The efficiency of the process of trade liberalization and economic integration will determine the degree of success of Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries in coping with global competition. The room for policy maneuvering is sufficiently wide to deserve attention, both externally in terms of negotiations on the terms of bilateral and multilateral trade agreements, and domestically with regards to policies, sequencing and incentives for restructuring and export growth. This volume provides an insightful analysis of the challenges and opportunities facing MENA in the light of multilateral and regional negotiations. Based on papers presented at the Fourth Mediterranean Development Forum, the volume highlights related tensions and tradeoffs, and proposes some policy directions to maximize on the potential gains from trade and Foreign Direct Investment in the context of the new economy.

                                    Book Description

This volume contains three main themes. The first theme relates to financial developments in the MENA region, emphasizing the role of stock markets and portfolio flows, foreign direct investments and private and public savings in the growth and development experience of the region. We see echoed throughout the first few chapters the notion that financial liberalization has many benefits as well as risks not only for the countries involved, but for international investors as well. For the countries of this region, we see the promise of enhanced growth and development through more developed financial markets that can facilitate the important relationship between investors and savers. For the international investor, we see a region that is posed to offer returns that are strongly correlated to risk. In the developing economies of the MENA region commercial banks have played a prominent role in economic growth since capital markets are still underdeveloped and still lack the appropriate mechanisms to channel effectively and efficiently funds from surplus units to deficit units. The next theme of the volume relates to the role commercial banks have played in channelling funds from savings to investments, and their role in the financing for development experience of some MENA economies. Finally, and on a broader level, the conduct of monetary policy in some MENA countries is highlighted with some emphasis on exchange rate policies and the use of some exchange rate regimes and their impact on the economies of the region.

                                      Book Description

With a population of more than 250 million and a notable strategic position between the North and the South, the Arab region constitutes a distinct region of the developing world. Its future development is a matter of crucial importance to the world. Unfortunately, however, the research environment in the Middle East and North Africa is not conducive to producing, accessing, or using development-related knowledge. This book explores the current challenges and opportunities of research for development in the Arab countries of the Middle East and North Africa. Experts from the region and development professionals from around the world provide a detailed portrait of the research environment and explore the relationship between science and policy. They also present and discuss new research initiatives in the areas of social and economic development, natural resource management and information and communication technologies.
