The 2006 Economic and Product Market Databook for Palmerston North, New Zealand
Philip M. Parker Manufacturer: ICON Group International, Inc. ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0497820579 Release Date: 2006-12-11 |
Product Description
In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have occasionally been asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services in New Zealand. The purpose of this study is to understand the density of demand within New Zealand and the extent to which Palmerston North might be used as a point of distribution within Oceana. From an economic perspective, however, Palmerston North does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries, rather, it represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for Palmerston North over the next five years for hundreds of industries, categories and products. The goal of this report is to report the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by Palmerston North when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in Palmerston North used by the space industry to launch satellites. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by the area served by Palmerston North. Without Palmerston North, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the population in New Zealand, Oceana, or the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both Oceana and Palmerston North. The data presented are the result of various spatial econometric and time-series forecasting models which, for each category presented, are applied to forecast and allocate demand across all countries of the world and major distribution centers or centers of dominant influence within each country. This is accomplished knowing that economic fundamentals (e.g. income) generally vary from one city to another within a given country over time. In this report, I report the allocation for each category for Palmerston North as an area of dominant influence in New Zealand and, potentially, Oceana. Important Caveat. Category definitions may overlap. The sum of multiple categories, therefore, may double count.

Challenges and Reforms of Economic Regulation in MENA Countries (Economic Research Forum)
Imed Limam Manufacturer: American University in Cairo Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 9774247906 |
Book Description
In their drive to improve their competitiveness in the world economy, MENA countries are faced with the challenges of improving productive and allocative efficiency; reducing bureaucratic ineffectiveness, red tape, corruption, and excessive government intrusion; and improving the poor service delivery that has characterized the region for some time. Most of these challenges cannot be met without changing outdated regulations that have become unnecessary burdens. The challenges are urgent to meet in the case of certain key sectors -- telecommunications, e-commerce, banking, and international trade, in particular -- whose role has become increasingly important in a more globalized world. This volume focuses on the operating environments, institutional requirements, and links and interconnections between regulatory reform in different sectors of MENA economies.

Food, Agriculture, and Economic Policy in the Middle East and North Africa (Research in Middle East Economics)
H. Lofgren Manufacturer: JAI Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 076230992X |
Book Description
This volume brings together a set of studies analyzing different aspects of food and agriculture in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). This sector is of crucial importance to the MENA economies, especially in terms of employment. Agriculture is particularly important for the poor, both on the consumption side - large parts of their budget is allocated to food - and as a source of incomes as most of the poor live in rural areas where agriculture dominates. Agriculture production in MENA is severely constrained by water scarcity and low, irregular rainfall. Sustainability is a major concern in many parts of the region as the quality of land and water resources is deterioration and scarcity becomes more severe due to growing competition from other parts of the economy. The fact that the region relies on imports for a large share of its food consumption is a major concern for policymakers who view this as a threat to national food security and a source of political vulnerability.
The studies included in this volume range from regional overview to micro studies. The chapters with a country focus cover issues that are recurrent in many MENA countries, giving them a broader relevance. The analyses cover policy issues in a wide range of areas - water, drought management, agricultural technology, producer and consumer subsidies, domestic food distribution, and foreign trade - and discusses how coordinated policies in these and other areas can contribute to more rapid, sustainable growth and poverty reduction.

Based on papers presented at the Fourth Mediterranean Development Forum, the volume highlights related tensions and tradeoffs, and proposes some policy directions to maximize on the potential gains from trade and Foreign Direct Investment in the context of the new economy.

Money and Finance in the Middle East: Missed Opportunities or Future Prospects, Volume 6 (Research in Middle East Economics)
Manufacturer: Elsevier Science ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0762312165 Release Date: 2005-06-30 |
Book Description
This volume contains three main themes. The first theme relates to financial developments in the MENA region, emphasizing the role of stock markets and portfolio flows, foreign direct investments and private and public savings in the growth and development experience of the region. We see echoed throughout the first few chapters the notion that financial liberalization has many benefits as well as risks not only for the countries involved, but for international investors as well. For the countries of this region, we see the promise of enhanced growth and development through more developed financial markets that can facilitate the important relationship between investors and savers. For the international investor, we see a region that is posed to offer returns that are strongly correlated to risk. In the developing economies of the MENA region commercial banks have played a prominent role in economic growth since capital markets are still underdeveloped and still lack the appropriate mechanisms to channel effectively and efficiently funds from surplus units to deficit units. The next theme of the volume relates to the role commercial banks have played in channelling funds from savings to investments, and their role in the financing for development experience of some MENA economies. Finally, and on a broader level, the conduct of monetary policy in some MENA countries is highlighted with some emphasis on exchange rate policies and the use of some exchange rate regimes and their impact on the economies of the region.
