Best Place To Turn for Household Answers.......2002-02-12
Earl Proulux is famous for his fascinating and useful column in Yankee Magazine. Don't have time to search over hundreds of past issues to try to solve a problem? This book is a compilation of helpful advice from the master of ingenious answers. It is divided into appropriate sections such as cleaning, animal pests, cooking, household repairs and many others. Each section can be a great read by itself but it is also useful as a reference since it has a thorough index to quickly locate the solution to any problem. Whether it is getting rid of an odor, cleaning an unusual stain or fixing a creaking floorboard, there are simple solutions here for almost any problem. Some will leave you wondering who tried it first and why (like rubbing table salt and a piece aluminum flatware in your hand to remove onion and garlic odors from your hands), but the end result is the same, it works. Get the book and keep it someplace where you can grab it in a hurry, you never know when you will need it.
Solutions to unusual household questions --.......2000-06-23
that were at one time common knowledge. Having read Proulx's column in Yankee magazine for years, it's exciting to find a compilation of his wit and wisdom. Proulx has an amazing and encyclopedic range of knowledge of the repair or reconditioning of almost anything, and also provides information on where to acquire the necessary ingredients and pitfalls to avoid when performing the task. He lends his voice of experience to the reader and many times, after reading about a commonsensical but not generally used method described by Proulx, I am amazed and left wondering, "how in the world did he know that?" This book fills a gap left due to the shortage of craftsmen today -- Yankee ingenuity at its best!

Customer Reviews:
A Disappointing Conclusion.......2005-12-19
This book is a disappointment not because it is poorly written but because it does not show the same improvement that the second showed over the first. In fact, I think it is at about the same level of the first, A PRESS OF CANVAS. What suffered in that one and this is not the actual writing, it is the story telling. It seems to wander along without much excitement and without getting much done. That is disappointing in that the second volume of the trilogy, A FINE TOPS'L BREEZE, did do a better job of story telling.
Even so, there is material of interest to be had here. Nautical fiction, especially of a naval bent, takes an American point of view all too rarely. Material concerning the War of 1812 is even more scarce. This book covers both of those issues from the point of view of Isaac Biggs, an American sailor pressed into the Royal Navy. He makes his escape in the first book, serves as a privateer on a rescue mission in the second and acts as the captain of a gunboat in a flotilla of such operating in the Chesapeake Bay during the closing days of the war in this one.
The descriptions of small boat operations has some interest as does the inclusion of such events as the burning of Washington and the writing of the Star Spangled Banner. The interest, however, does not translate into any drama.
This is a fair book for aficionados of the genre but is nothing special.
The best of the trilogy.......2002-02-08
This third book of the trilogy could possibly be read as a stand alone novel, although it does make some references to incidents and people in the previous books. The story is set in 1814 in Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. It is a good description of the conflicts between the British and Americans in that setting including the burning of Washington and the attack on Baltimore, although it seems to omit the British attack on Havre de Grace. Like some previous authors, this author has included helpful maps of the scenes of action.
The description of the small boat operations using sloops and gunboats is very detailed. The author notes in his own "Author's Note" that he changed some locations, etc., from the real ones, although it is not clear why he did that. Most locations are accurate, as are the real people who were involved and the major incidents.
The War of 1812 was a peculiar war that started because of slow communications, had various raids or other actions that served no military purpose, and neither side gained anything of substance except a mountain of debt to pay for the costs of the war. The Peace Treaty was signed in December 1814, but the last military action was on 30 June 1815, again because of slow communications. See "The Lost Ships of the Royal Navy" for details of British ships captured by the Americans in 1815 after the war had ended.
A big finish to this fine Trilogy.......2001-10-28
Superb - I may have liked it better than the other two in the series. The big dog and Isaac's love interest added greatly to my enjoyment. The parts about the buring of our capital and the bombardment of Baltimore were particularly timely in light of the September 11th attack on our country. Most people, me included, have little understanding of these events and White's book - and the others in this series - have brought them to life. A really easy way to learn some history about our great country. I even checked a few of the details for historic accuracy and they were right on. I hope there will be more of these historically accurate stories from this writer.

Guns of the evening.......2002-01-29
Jutland, June 1916 the long awaited clash of the dreadnoughts as the British Grand Fleet and the German High Seas fleet square off against each other. At the end of the day the High Seas fleet is back in the Jade Estuary never to face battle again despite having sunk three British battle cruisers, one of which was the Indomitable. Five crew survived the sinking.
We trace the story of four of the crew of the Indomitable over the previous years to this summer evening. One is an Australian who has risen to become a gunnery lieutenant, under treatment for syphilis. Another a sub lieutenant from a English middle class background, in love with the Australian's wife. Steve Bundy is a professional boxer from the slums of London who enlisted in the royal marines because he refused to throw a fight. Ordinary Seaman Albert Seeley is a child of the Glasgow slums, forced to enlist to or go to prison
The choices and chances of these men's lives are explored that lead them to this point are examined. This is put against the author's knowledge of the British Navy's strengths and weaknesses of the period, and the class prejudices of the time are examined.
Ronald Bassett again manages to produce a magnificent story, credible fictional characters set on a perfectly drawn historical canvas. Five stars.

Customer Reviews:
Should be on every Developer and Engineer's shelf........2006-11-01
Dr. Taylor does his usual great job covering a difficult subject - ties in well with his "Applied Life Data Analysis", the revered reliability resource. Because of his GE background, he emphasizes experimental plans and analysis methods (i.e.: partially censored) which permit you to make good predictions regarding a product or system while you are still collecting data (e.g.: management wants an answer NOW, even if the experiment is not completed). A few more examples of how "typical" systems behave would be helpful, but otherwise a great resource.
Great companion volume to Applied Life Data Analysis.......2004-01-30
I agree with the previous reviewer that this is the definitive classic in accelerated life testing. It's a great companion volume to Dr. Nelson's "Applied Life Data Analysis" which remains one of the best reliability textbooks ever written. I have noticed that all major reliability and accelerated testing programs use this book as their main reference - proof of the books usefulness. My only compaint is with the publishers for the steep price - now that they're bringing out a lower cost version of Applied Life Data Analysis, I hope they'll bring out a low-cost or paperback version of this classic as well.
best statistical account of accelerated testing.......2000-06-22
Nelson is a private consultant who has worked on countless practical problems in reliability from his consulting practice and previous employment at General Electric. He is an excellent lecturer and writer. His earlier book "Applied Life Data Analysis" was considered to be one of the best texts on reliability.
This book is very thorough in its treatment of all aspects of accelerated testing and is filled with many good references. Nelson carefully defines the mathematical models which consist of two components, (1) an acceleration function which describes how the mean lifetime changes as a function of the acceleration factor and (2) a probability distribution that explains the random variability of outcomes at each acceleration factor. A particular mean function could be the Arrhenius relationship and the probability distribution could be exponential. Hence there is not a single Arrhenius acceleration model but rather an Arrhenius-exponential, an Arrhenius-lognormal or an Arrhenius-Weibull model. The book is filled with interesting theory and examples. Nelson provides excellent practical guidance based on his wealth of experience.

McDaniel takes NASA's uneducated "debunking" to task.......2000-06-27
Stanley McDaniel accomplishes a lot in "The McDaniel Report," effectively dissecting NASA's tired party line that the alleged "Face on Mars" is a "trick of light and shadow." If this was all he accomplished, this would still be an important book. But he goes much deeper, challenging mainstream science on epistemilogical grounds and taking officialdom to task for knowingly (?) circulating bogus claims about the Face and other anomalous formations on Mars. "The McDaniel Report" reveals a NASA saturated in its own self-importance, and deals a weighty blow to prevailing SETI dogma.
Carl Sagan has said that "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." Well, here it is. If extraterrestrial ruins on Mars bother you, by all means keep away from "The McDaniel Report."
great reading and of high scientific value.......1999-10-11
This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the (serious) research of the anomalies on Mars, criticaster or "believer". Concise, detailed, well-documented and with lots of references. A must-have and certainly of high scientific value. Professor McDaniel has done an outstanding job with this report.

Book Description
Beginning with the true story behind Murphy's Law and the Law's true meaning -- You can succeed if you pay attention to things that may fail -- the author takes us on a tour of some of the most fascinating failures of engineered artifacts over the last century, with a focus on the past thirty years.
Readers will imagine dancing on the Skywalks of the Kansas City Hyatt before their catastrophic fall, rock and roll with Galloping Gertie, imagine the last ride aboard doomed aircraft, feel the agony of the engineers who were fearful before Challenger exploded, wonder what the Three Mile Island meltdown means for our future, relive the Great Northeast Blackout as they envision potholes on the Information Superhighway, feel the terror of the people engulfed by water as a defective dam failed, and Lake Conemaugh became a roaring cascade on its way down the mountain to Johnstown.
Despite all its attention to failure, the book is really about success, a theme that the author establishes in his dedication: "In memory of my father, Harry A. Bortz (1901-1991), who taught me not to fear failure, nor to accept it, but to learn from it in order to succeed." He learned his father's lesson well.
This book was designated a "Selector's Choice" on the National Science Teachers Association - Children's Book Council List of Outstanding Science Trade Books for Children for 1996. --This text refers to the hardcover edition of this title

Nutrons, Black Holes and Antigravity.......2005-01-06
The book Paradigm Shift by Allan M. Hegland is a provocative and thought provoking attempt at restructuring our assumptions in cosmology, and to align it with Einstein's theories on gravity and observations we can make with modern technology - as well as with our own eyes and simple math. And to align it with common sense, rather than what the latter day high priests of public belief, theoretical physicists and their media mouthpieces, have bamboozled us into believing.
Among the first of these impossible things he does away with in his theses on astronomy and celestial mechanics are black holes (as modern science claim them to be), our notions of planetary orbits and our confused `understanding' of gravity. The basis for his thesis is what he calls MIG-field. Actually three basic kinds of it, classified by proximity to source migibody, relative motion, and relationship to other bodies. These are the intrinsic mig which is ultimately determined by the number of nucleons and which is the force holding the migibody together and which forms a spherical field (of warped space=introverted acceleration) around said migibody, the relative mig which is the mig of the body plus the force exerted to produce external (linear as opposed to introverted) acceleration of the body.
Another of his basic premises is that neutrons fuel stars. He asks why science claims that the primordial matter created at the "big bang" were mostly protons (and alpha particles) when neutrons are far more numerous in normal matter, and neutrons can (and do) easily decay into protons. These are just some of the prime examples in this book, which has been written for the lay public. At least those with a basic college education and an interest in astronomy and celestial mechanics or black holes, gravity and anti gravity. Or ancient catastrophes in the Solar system and their causes, and the evolution of homo sapiens sapiens.
It seems that every month, now, there is a new report in science journals of embarrassing facts upsetting the fancy theories and religious postulates of theoretical physics and their `astrophilosophy', not to mention Hawking and his bunch of `astrotheologicians'.
Hegland has no patience with this priesthood of modern science and their treatment of people like Velikovsky, who connected folklore tales of celestial conflicts to real astronomical events - that astronomers claimed were impossible, if not hilarious. None of them apologized publicly, when his predictions about the atmosphere and surface temperature was proven to be correct.
Heglands book is very interesting, very provocative and mostly very thorough, consistent with objective consensus reality in most cases, as observed and experienced by myself, as well as convincing in its logic. I doubt most readers will agree with all he claims, but this is solid work. I only miss a bit better update on the exploration results of the last five years or so, and how this would relate to his main thesis. Maybe in the next edition? Recommended read.
