Some spine physicians estimate that half of the back and neck surgeries performed in the United States may be unnecessary. Treat Your Back Without Surgery puts you in charge of the relief and prevention of back and neck pain. Author Stephen Hochschuler, M.D., a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in spine surgery and cofounder of the Texas Back Institute, and coauthor Bob Reznik, who developed the Texas Back Institute Back Pain Hotline, teach you how your spine works, what the causes of pain are, and what you can do about it. Recommended pain relievers include first-aid remedies, spine injections, Tai Chi, and acupuncture. The book also describes lesser-known therapies, such as the Alexander Technique, Rolfing, reflexology, Aston Patterning, and Ayurvedic medicine. Clear, well-illustrated exercises show exactly what to do to make your back stronger, more flexible, and injury resistant. You'll learn how to lift, stand, sit, drive, sleep, and play recreational sports to minimize back stress. Because sometimes self-help isn't enough, Hochschuler and Reznik also discuss when you should go to the doctor and, as your last resort, how to choose a surgeon. Put this book in the hands of anyone suffering back pain and especially anyone considering back surgery. --Joan Price

5 out of 5 stars I Almost Took My Own Life-THANK YOU FOR THIS BOOK.......2005-02-18

My name is Peter Vincent Cannice and I live in the Phoenix, Arizona area. I am 37 years old and have been suffering from severe back pain for all too long now. I understand what others are going through-I am there with you or HAVE been there where you are now.

Although I am looking at my 2nd surgery in the middle of March, without this book by Stephen Hochschuler, I think I would not be around to write to you today. I am having an artificial disc replacement surgery, by the Grace of God, which was just approved in November of 2004. Dr. Hochschuler, a great surgeon that I met with in person, as a result of my pain and reading his book, is a man of wisdom and a man who understands the severe and chronic nature of back pain.

This great book clearly will give you a number of Non-Surgical alternatives that will be helpful to you. Whether it is your neck, back or even leg pain (or any sort of chronic pain-for that matter), you can rest assured that you will be purchasing a book that will offer you some peace of mind and some relief.

You can email me at HorsePete@aol.com if you would like to talk or should you ever need support. I am in severe pain at this moment but I can see the end of the rainbow as a result of reading this book. The alternatives are great ones and I've tried all of them at this point. I have no alternative, at this point, other than surgery and I pray that I make it through this very intense surgery in March of 2005. If you read this book you will learn that you are NOT ALONE, that your pain is REAL and that there really IS hope for you. I PROMISE YOU THIS!

Please don't give up. Hang on and know that things are going to get better. This book gave me techniques to get through the day and ultimately I hold it responsible for getting me to the point that I am at today. And now I am writing a book of my own-on Chronic Pain and Alternatives. It will be free. And you can have one as a gift for the peace that I received in reading this wonderful book.

GOOD LUCK TO YOU. TAKE A GREAT AND DEEP BREATH AND REACH OUT IF YOU NEED HELP. HELP IS OUT THERE AND PEOPLE REALLY CARE AND UNDERSTAND.

My heart goes out to you.

Peter Cannice

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on the BACK that I have EVER read.......2004-10-05

I have had chronic back pain for 2 years-so bad that I have considered taking my own life. Reading this book gave me hope, brought me up to date and allowed me to continue with therapy. I am now looking forward to possibly getting an artificial disk operation so this 36 year old male can get back to taking care of his family and kids. My background is in Medicine and this book offers it all-from the lay person to the Medical Docotor. I highly suggest this book over MANY, MANY others. You can email me at HorsePete@aol.com with ANY questions you may have. My name is Peter Cannice, of Phoenix, Arizona, and I am a survivor because of this book.

3 out of 5 stars OK book, but could use more information.......2000-04-10

This book is pretty good for those who have very little or no knowledge on the subject of back pain. However, it offers very little to anyone who has studied the subject with some effort. I was hoping for some new insights on treating my own back pain when I purchased this book and got virtually no new information to help my situation.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Information.......2000-04-04

This book provides GREAT information on all forms of treatment. It reviews everything from traditional to preventative remedies, and also gives tips on keeping your back healthy to avoid future injuries. The exercise pictures were very helpful. Also great for determining if you need back surgery and what the next steps are, how to find a surgeon, etc. if you do. I read this book as soon as I received it and found all of the information to be a great help and future resource!

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFULL SONGS FROM HILLARIOUS TO TOUCHING.......2001-07-18

I have been looking for this book, since I first heard the soundtrack Christams morning. Then I went to Broadway and saw the show last April. Yazbek has shared with us what are sure to become clasics in the musical theatre world. If this show had come out any other year it would have swept the tony's for music and score (unfortunetly it had to content with "The Producers". The song "You Walk With Me" is such a touching testamony to friendship. It is one of the most touching songs to come out of a muscial in recent years. It would also work well in a church service. Then there is the song "Big Ass Rock" which has sent everyone I have played it for into fits of laughter and when they finally stop they demand that I play it again. This Book is a must for anyone who buys sheet music to show tunes.

The film The Full Monty was the sleeper hit of 1997. Made on a modest budget of about $3 million, it grossed more than $200 million worldwide and picked up an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. This adaptation of Simon Beaufoy's screenplay, published to coincide with the film's release on video, fleshes out the situations and characters, exploring their motivations and ruminations in ways that the cinema cannot.

The story is the same: a group of unemployed steelworkers living in the depressed town of Sheffield resolve to pick up some side money by stripping in a public club. Lacking the physical attractions of your typical Chippendale dancers, the six heroes go for "the full monty" anyway, hoping to redeem themselves in the eyes of their community. Wendy Holden's novelization is every bit as funny and moving as the film and is highly recommended to its fans.

      Book Description

The Full Monty is a brilliant and original comedy about six men driven to face their fears of inadequacy and loss in hard times. Broke, out of work and on the verge of losing their wives and children, they come up with a desperate, brilliant plan: Make like Chippendale dancers and strip for cash!

The Full Monty is the story of a last-ditch attempt by a group of working-class men to redeem themselves as reliable in the eyes of their community. In scenes as hysterical as they are tender, they discover that "the full monty" requires more than dexterity, a fit body and the right moves; and that the confidence they need can only come from stripping bare the deeper issues that trouble their individual lives. The result is a humane, triumphant comedy that has won the hearts of millions around the world.

In her novel based on the critically acclaimed box-office hit, Wendy Holden revisits our favorite moments both hilarious and heartwarming from The Full Monty.

" A delightful comedy about out-of-work, out-of-shape men who deide to become strippers."
      New York Times

"A comic delight! An engrossing study of the male ego stripped bare."
      USA Today

"The world's first full-frontal fairy tale!"
      Entertainment Weekly

PLEASE NOTE-All the reviews (including the editorial ones) seem to be referring to the novel by Wendy Holden which was based on the screenplay listed here. My review is for the screenplay- isbn 1901680029, NOT the novel which is improperly linked as the other edition of this book.
      __________________________________________________________________

Every bit as fun as the movie! Excellent peek into the psyche of the working class man, self esteem and body image, societal pressures, and the differences between men and women. There were also a few scenes that did not make it to the film version. Reading the screenplay was a wonderful aide in helping to grasp and understand the language of the film as well. It was written in the same accents as it was spoken. I really enjoyed reading this and it made re-watching the film that much more enjoyable.

1 out of 5 stars I found it real dull.......2005-03-30

I thought I'd get up to speed with this book, since I missed the movie. Maybe knowing the book was written based on the movie, probably the screenplay, may have biased me.

It was not at all like reading a "normal" novel, like a bestseller. It was like what it purported to be: an author given the probably unenviable task of "cripping" on a screenplay to come up with a book.

But, I could see where the movie would be better, because you do need the bodily aspect, the dancing, and the music, to make this story work. The book has none of that. The cover has pictures of the actors, but that's it.

The build-up to the climax, when the men dance, seemed too long and repetitive, the same kind of failings happening over and over. Finally, the climax, when the men dance and "all is forgiven," and everyone lives happily ever after; it's too much like a fairy tale.

I guess that was the intention of the original writers, to make it like a modern fairy tale. I think I'd stick with Grimm or Hans C. Andersen, better. Diximus.

1 out of 5 stars Just plain awful.......2003-01-16

Oh, I am so sorry that you lost digits in an industrial accident. I was going to ask you to count on your fingers the GOOD books you have seen wriiten FROM a movie. Maybe you can still do it, because this book won't be on your list.

Wordy, plain, flaccid, vapid, artless... Who in the world hired this done?

If you INSIST on reading a copy, get one through your library, and donate the difference to charity!

4 out of 5 stars What we do to turn a buck.......2001-10-05

The book (on which the film was based) is, at the same time, tragic, funny and moving. Full of the dark, working-class humor of the north of England, it tells the story of a group of unemployed men who decide that emulation of the Chippendales would be a good way to turn a buck. Sadly, these anti-heroes lack the skill or the physique of their well-muscled counterparts but decide, nevertheless, to 'go the full Monty' and give it a try. The community is kept in the dark as our six heroes practice the routines and try to tighten up the flab.

The Full Monty highlights the fears and inadequacies of men who have begun to lose their self-respect and possibly their families. The confidence they need can only come from stripping bare the deeper issues that trouble their individual lives (pun intended). The result is a humane, idiosyncratic, triumphant comedy that has won the hearts of millions around the world. Maybe the first full-frontal fairy tale!

I've both read the book and seen the film. The book is better, taking time to examine in more depth the characters of Gaz, Dave, Lomper, Horse, Guy and Gerald.

      3 out of 5 stars Doesn't measure up........2000-07-14

Whether in film or in novel form, The Full Monty is a charming story. In an age of copious "chick-flicks," The Full Monty (finally!) presents its masculine counterpart. Though its themes are gender universal--financial hardship, self-image, and friendship, to name a few--here we get a believable, side-splitting glimpse into the male perspective. However, Wendy Holden's adaptation is stripped of all the character possessed by the screenplay on which it's based. The characters lack likeability, thus a story that is potentially rich in both tender and comedic moments falls short of successful. If you want to go The Full Monty, I recommend reading the screenplay or renting the video instead.

This book really is the type of publication that gets you no closer to the subject. If you enjoyed the film then this book just won't be for you. The words 'jumping on a bandwaggon in the hope of cashing in' come to mind. Far better to read the screenplay of the film, which is fully illustrated and contains contributions from the director and writer Simon BeaFoy.

1 out of 5 stars A misleading cover & title will disappoint most.......1997-11-28

Yes, the front cover does have the TFM movie poster on it, but that's pretty much the only connection this book has to this popular movie. This is NOT a book about the characters in TFM, nor a behind-the-scenes peek, nor even interviews with the people involved.

This is a light-hearted, frivolous look at the world of male strippers. There are silly quizzes and opinions from ordinary people but hardly anything directly referring to the movie, apart from a number of low quality black & white photos.

But even if you were seriously interested in the art of male stripping, this book is just too shallow to consider. Honestly, you are better off spending the money seeing the movie again instead.

The Cold War was one of the most dangerous periods in American history, but it ended with one of our greatest victories: the dismantling of the Soviet Empire and discrediting of Communist ideology. Architects of Victory tells how the Cold War was won and it does so in a unique way by focusing on the lives of six great figures who were among those most responsible for Western victory: Harry Truman, Winston Churchill, Konrad Adenauer, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Pope John Paul II, and Ronald Reagan. This scholarly survey of contemporary history and celebration of human greatness provides an indispensable overview of the events and personalities that dominated the second half of the 20th Century.

5 out of 5 stars Six Men Who Helped Change the World.......2001-03-25

Joseph Shattan has assembled a series of short, but informative profiles of six leaders who played central roles in the Cold War. His roster of heroes includes:

-- President Truman. After initially toeing the accommodationist line of FDR, Truman soon recognized the expansionist ambitions of the Soviet Union and reacted accordingly. His Truman Doctrine, Marshall Plan, Greece and Turkey aid package stopped the spread of Marxist hegemony in its tracks and set the contours for the four-decade struggle that was to come.

-- Winston Churchill. In and out of office, he warned early and often of the rising Bolshevik threat. But like his earlier forebodings about Hitler, his alarms fell largely on deaf ears. It was not until the 1980s that the West pursued Cold War strategies that can truly be called Churchillian -- with predictable results.

-- Konrad Adenauer. As the first Chancellor of the Republic of Germany, he planted the vital country squarely in the Western camp. West Germany was the crucible of the Cold War. Lacking a leader of Adenauer's resolve and conviction, that country could have easily fallen under the Soviet orbit, or, as Stalin designed, opted for a feckless, hollow "neutrality."

-- Solzhenitsyn. In Shattan's words, he "re-moralized the struggle" after Viet Nam and other setbacks cast doubt on the West's Containment policies. His seminal writings, especially "The Gulag Archipealgo," laid bare the repressive underpinnings of the Soviet system, while his public outrage at detente opened many eyes in the West.

-- Pope John Paul II -- The first non-Italian Pontiff in some 400 years came around at a most propitious moment. (Andropov and other Soviet paranoids contended that the Pope's selection was engineered by the U.S.) Lech Walesa credits Pope John Paul II with "saving Solidarity" -- the counter-revolutionary movement that administered the first schisms in the Soviet armor --and in inspiring his fellow Poles in their stuggle to shake off the yoke of Communist domination.

-- President Reagan. He foresaw the demise of the Soviet Union at a time when many saw history moving inexorably away from the West. Beginning in the 1970s, he called Communism a failed and failing system that would ultimately be trumped by the West -- heretic words to Western leaders who thought befriending the Soviets was the best way to change their behavior. As President, he pursued policies (Churchill's) expressly designed to exacerbate the tensions within the Soviet system. The Berlin Wall was toppled (it did not "fall"; it was pushed) less than 10 months after he left office.

Shattan's work is required reading for anyone interested in learning how the Cold War began -- and ended.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book and analysis.......2000-10-18

This book is a very impressive piece of work. Shattan is very fair when he writes about each and every person, no matter what their political stripe. From Churchill's prescient knowledge of what must be done to Truman's acknowledgement of the danger that Communism posed to Adenauer's firm and unwavering alignment with the West to Solzihentisyn(sp?) showing how the Cold War was really a moral struggle to Pope John Paul II's unwavering determination to free Poland to Ronald Reagan who ultimately caused the end of the Cold War; even though it came under Bush's administration; Shattan demonstrates a keen eye for details and an excellent sense of analysis. This is well worth reading for anyone interested in the Cold War.

              2 out of 5 stars revisionist history's finest hour.......2000-08-23

This is the ideological nonsense that passes for intelligence on the rabid right. In regards to Reagan, although a critique of the importance of these "Hero's" is overdue. If just spending the USSR into destruction were true, the Soviet Union would have fallen in 1943 when they spending virtually everything on materiel. Read about the economic situation the Soviets faced and Gorbachev's thoughts. He knew the situation was desperate long before he got to the top, and knew there must be changes. He allowed the borders to open. A few more facts, i.e., Solidarity, Perstroika, and you'll get a picture of what happened. The USSR would have collasped without Reagan. Why would the Soviets just throw in their hand after Reykjavik? (read Frances Fitzgerald's new book.) The first time I heard this inane theory about Reagan I did the same thing Gorbachev did when he first heard it - I broke into a good belly laugh. I will admit the right has a PR machine that is second to none. But in the end this is just another specious attempt to revise history, a close cousin to "FDR was in on Pearl harbor."

4 out of 5 stars History as it should be told.......2000-07-19

This book's objectivity is suspect due to the fact that it was published by the conservative Heritage Foundation; however, Joseph Shattan does a good job in making his case for these six men who did so much to alter the course of late 20th century history. It is remarkable that his list includes two American presidents (one Democrat, one Republican), a German chancellor, England's greatest prime minister, a pope, and a Russian writer. Such a disparate group makes this more than an essay on politics, it is a rich analysis of fifty years of world history. You can disagree with Shattan (as other reviewers have done), but you cannot deny that he has offered good reasoning for his heroic choices. It is enlightening to read about the contributions of Solzhenitsyn, Adenaur, and John Paul II, which are not well known. It is extremely satisfying to read a concise analysis of what Truman, Churchill, and Reagan brought to the mix. I believe that conservatives give Reagan too much credit for "winning" the Cold War, however I also believe that history will bear them out to a very large degree. Churchill is a giant, truly the Man of the Century (despite what TIME magazine thinks), and get his credit here. Truman obviously had a strong grasp on "the big picture" even as he grew into his role. It is interesting to apply what Shattan teaches us to the study of governments, economies, and social progress in this same time period. Joseph Shattan has done us all a favor by publishing this book; maybe efforts like this will finally begin to reduce the luster from Mikhail Gorbachev. Buy this book and read it. Then donate it to your kids' school library.

1 out of 5 stars "Winning" Six Heros, I think NOT.......2000-06-15

how can one say victory after a few million people lost their lives in all the proxy wars, I couldn't understand why this author "praises" these people, communism fell under it's own faulty economic structure. I thought when I first picked up this book, lets see what he has to say, by the time I finished the book I was disgusted! How can ANY side claim victory in a war, everybody loses in a war, everybody.

              5 out of 5 stars Fun reading.......1999-12-27

My third grade daughter and I found this a fun and informative book. It takes some of the mystery out of the little creatures we live with.

Librarians and teachers looking for books for reluctant readers, take note of this title. With facts about fleas, mites and other tiny human-loving insects, this book will fascinate (and gross out) even the most resistant reader. Great for book talks, I've used this title in many school visits leaving everyone scratching furiously and begging for more.

4 out of 5 stars You Will Never Be Alone........1998-09-02

Did you know that fleas are highly specie-specific (e.g., the fleas that prefer dogs don't like cats or people)? Did you know that the lice found on the bodies of people are completely different from the lice inhabiting the head or pubic region (a.k.a. crabs)? Do you care?

Well, I do. This is a captivating book about the many little creatures which make us their home. From the little mites that eat dead skin cells to the various flora and fauna which reside in the digestive system, this book covers the lifeforms, good and bad, which have evolved with us just as we have evolved with them. As the old saying goes, we can't live without them and we can't live with them.
