Bought this book because my friend had it and I liked it. I think it's great to just read for fun and share with friends. The book has 3 different interpretations of your name. I find the last intepretation to be the most accurate and my friends agree. Just a nice pass time.

Great gift idea - inside and out!.......2007-06-18

I have had this book for many years now, and it is frayed and ripped for all of my friends/co-workers/family making copies for themselves. For Christmas one year I framed each of the names on pretty stationary paper and gave it as gifts to my friends. Last year I made some for a few co-worker's baby rooms. I love the definitions and everyone I have spoke to says it fits them to a T! I do wish they would extend it and bring it back with a revised version with more updated names as well, but it is pretty easy to do the interpretations step-by-step in the book.

Excellent Resource on Names.......2006-07-22

Most of us can probably relate to having the same experience with people of the same name - for example maybe every Kelly you've met has been very kind. Names have their own associated energy and are part of why we have certain personalities. This book does an excellent job of explaining why names have these characteristics.

The book also goes into a number of historical ways names are interpreted and gives tools to help interpret names in general. The book does not list every name, it would be impossible, but the foundation it provides is excellent. The descriptions of the names included in the book seem pretty insightful and there are a fair number of names in there. I was really impressed with the explanation of how names have meaning but I like to know how things work. If you just want a huge list of names with no background on why names have meaning then other books may be better.

I highly recommend this book for those interested in the topic. It's much better than "The Secret Meaning of Names", which I found incredibly disappointing and ended up returning.

its a fun and entertaining book...........2006-03-25

This book is a cool book. It was fun and entertaining to read. I found my name in it. And i didnt expect to since my name is soo old fashioned and not so popular. It gave me alot of insight into well...me. I enjoyed reading names of my family in it and learning things about them that i am sure they dont even know. I would reccommend this book as a form of entertainment.

I am seeking another copy of this book, which has disappeared from my bookshelves. My kids and I had fun using this book for a parlor-game, where guests could look up the derivation and meaning of their given names. Whether or not the personality characteristics truly applied, people always had fun, and, as with dealing with such subjective things as horoscopes, always took away with them something to think about with respect to personal qualities and characteristics.

This book, like most Osprey books, was filled with detailed information and excellent plates by Christa Hook. As I read it, I could not help but wonder if, assuming the legendary 'Arthur' was real, these are what his 'knights' would have looked like.

I love this series and its publisher, Osprey. Only the British can put out such quality. Besides the excellently detailed plates, each book in this series gives an historical overview of the subject's time period.
I've always been fascinated by the Roman Empire, particularly the later Christian period. This book (and its companion, LATE ROMAN INFANTRYMAN AD 236-565) shows the influence of Germanic and Iranian styles, weaponry and tactics which not only transformed Rome's military but also layed the foundation for the development of the medieval knight.

Be sure to purchase both books together.

Excellent overview.......2004-08-01

I had previously been disappointed by Osprey's "Romano-Byzantine Armies 4th-9th Centuries," and was therefore hesitant to purchase any more of their books. This book changed my opinion of the quality of Osprey's titles. It is a well-conceived overview of the the Late Roman cavalry, examining its transformation from an auxiliary force to the core of the Justinianic Roman army. The numerous black & white photos of contemporary art and artifacts depicting arms, armor and cavalry soldiers in various states of activity help bring to life the text which is well-written and lifely.

Of particular note are the beautiful color plates done by Christa Hook. They are attractively done with tremendous attention to detail. My personal favorite is a scene of Roman medicine being practiced on three injured soldiers. This scene is taken directly from an account in Procopius where the procedure is described in some detail.

All in all, I can't recommend this book highly enough. It is especially useful for those with little to no knowledge of the period who are looking for a quick overview. The bibliography is also very useful and much appreciated.

Late Roman Cavalryman 236-565 Ad.......2000-10-25

Another valuable addition to the Osprey Warrior Series. Most of the books written about Roman armies usually concentrated on the famous Roman infantry -"Roman Legions". The Roman cavalry is usually considered as an auxiliary and being ignored or only briefly mentioned. However, this book is specially written about Roman calvary. It gives readers an insight into Roman's calvary. Roman cavalry's formations, tactics and warfare are studied in detail. As tradition of Osprey military books, a section of full color illustrations is offered. These color illustrations are beautiful and, as realistic as possible, depicting the appearance and equipments of the late Roman cavalry. This book is informative. I recommend this book to anyone who is into military warfare, especially for those interested in Roman armies

While regression analysis traces the dependence of the distribution of a response variable to see if it bears a particular (linear) relationship to one or more of the predictors, nonparametric regression analysis makes minimal assumptions about the form of relationship between the average response and the predictors. This makes nonparametric regression a more useful technique for analyzing data in which there are several predictors that may combine additively to influence the response. (An example could be something like birth order/gender/and temperament on achievement motivation).

Unfortunately, researchers have not had accessible information on nonparametric regression analysis, until now. Beginning with presentation of nonparametric regression based on dividing the data into bins and averaging the response values in each bin, Fox introduces readers to the techniques of kernel estimation, additive nonparametric regression, and the ways nonparametric regression can be employed to select transformations of the data preceding a linear least-squares fit. The book concludes with ways nonparametric regression can be generalized to logit, probit, and Poisson regression.

Fixed-interval smoothing is a method of extracting useful information from inaccurate data. It has been applied to problems in engineering, the physical sciences, and the social sciences, in areas such as control, communications, signal processing, acoustics, geophysics, oceanography, statistics, econometrics, and structural analysis. This monograph addresses problems for which a linear stochastic state space model is available, in which case the objective is to compute the linear least-squares estimate of the state vector in a fixed interval, using observations previously collected in that interval. The author uses a geometric approach based on the method of complementary models. Using the simplest possible notation, he presents straightforward derivations of the four types of fixed-interval smoothing algorithms, and compares the algorithms in terms of efficiency and applicability. Results show that the best algorithm has received the least attention in the literature. Fixed Interval Smoothing for State Space Models: includes new material on interpolation, fast square root implementations, and boundary value models; is the first book devoted to smoothing; contains an annotated bibliography of smoothing literature; uses simple notation and clear derivations; compares algorithms from a computational perspective; identifies a best algorithm.
