5 out of 5 stars Well worth the money..........2002-10-10

I bought this book a couple of months ago and i just love it. This book gives you step by step in structions, including suggestions for different interfacings to use and suiting fabrics to use. I would rcommend this book to a sewer with moderate sewing skills as a great starter book for tailoring. Also i would purchase another tailoring book to go along with this one titled "Classic tailoring techniques"( for men or women) by roberto cabrera this book will give you in depth information on common fitting problems and how to remedy them when tailoring a garmet. All and all I would definitely recommend this easy to read and understand book to anyone who wants to boost the sewing skills to a new level..

Book Description

Vivid, hilarious, and compelling, this eagerly awaited book takes its place among the travel classics. It is a thrilling tale of adventure, a comic masterpiece, and an evocative portrait of a medieval land marooned in the modern world. Eight and a half centuries ago, under Genghis Khan, the Mongols burst forth from Central Asia in a series of spectacular conquests that took them from the Danube to the Yellow Sea. Their empire was seen as the final triumph of the nomadic "barbarians."In this remarkable book Stanley Stewart sets off on a pilgrimage across the old empire, from Istanbul to the distant homeland of the Mongol hordes. The heart of his odyssey is a thousand-mile ride, traveling by horse, through trackless land. On a journey full of bizarre characters and unexpected encounters, he crosses the desert and mountains of Central Asia to arrive at the windswept grasslands of the steppes, the birthplace of Genghis Khan. (6 x 9, 288 pages)

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read.......2007-02-24

I've always been intrigued by the Mongols, as they are at the edge between settled and nomadic people. And I've also always like travel writing. Stanely Stewart's book therefore made me very happy. It is beautifully written and the research is thorough. I learned about the Secret History of the Mongols in one section and in another found one of my favorite senteces in any book. I do not have my copy with me, but the sentece included truck repair, camels, and Uzbeks.

Mr. Stewarts book is too good to be called a travel memoir and to lively to be called a history book. It is one of the most entertaining and informative books I have read.

4 out of 5 stars a great vicarious voyage.......2006-04-05

I picked this book up browsing in my hospital bookshop while on call on a lazy saturday. On the back cover I discovered it had been recently translated into Italian (2004)from English and decided to buy it. From the moment I opened it, I couldn't put it down, I read it on work, at home, and also while driving the car (!). I laughed by myself on more than one occasion and looked around for someone to laugh with me. Naturally, I will probably never go to Mongolia, or have the guts to take the trip the author went through, but, somehow I felt that I was there. That I met the people he describes.

One interesting point of the book is its inspiration from the trip of William of Rubruc eight centuries ago. This short miliary description of the mongol world of those times has the same off hand descriptions of the mongol people and customs we find in Mr. Stewart's book. However, no one accused William of beeing "politically not correct" or "sarcastic". Often it is not necessary to have an empathic vision of a different culture to describe it to people that share our cultural standards.

Mr. Stewart's book is instructive and definitely fun to read, but above all it "takes you along" the whole time, which is really what readers that don't have the opportunities to travel as much as they would like, really want.

4 out of 5 stars Good travel story.......2005-06-03

I am amazed by Mr. Stewarts ability to write. He can convey the emotions and feeling of a place with amazing clarity and I found myself really feeling like I was there.

The trip itself is quite an epic, a thousand miles by mostly horseback through a culture completely different than anything we are used to. it also comes at a really interesting time in the countries history when they have thrown off Communism and are deep in the throws of trying to make something else work.

At its best the book is full of delightful descriptions of faraway places and unique locations, the people are described so well that you can picture them sitting next to you and their conversations relate items of real significance. Learning from the people what the fall of Communism has done to their economy makes for fascinating reading. Also learning about the history of the Monks and the world of Genghis Khan was fascinating.

At its worst, the book doesn't cut the Mongolian people very much slack. They have decided not to live in cities but rather to live in tents (gers), rather than celebrate a thousand-year-old tradition and show what good it brings and how it enriches the lives of the people who live it, mostly you get the feeling that it is inferior and the people who live it ought to switch to something better.

It also portrays Communism and the Russian government in a completely evil light, no effort is made to record areas where the life of the Mongolian has gotten better thanks to Communism, although brief mention of government bldgs, schools and acting troups is mentioned. Yet how poorly the people fared and when the system didn't work is vividly brought out into the open.

This is also about travelling over some of the most lonely isolated terrain in the world, yet little time is spent discussing the travel itself. How did they get food when they were not in a Ger, what did it feel like to spend weeks in the saddle from morning to night, How did the clothing feel, etc. Very little was spent on the actual travel itself, the book focuses primarily on the people that were met.

But these are minor points, its is a good book to learn about the culture of Mongolia and what has been happening to the common man since the fall of Communism and I found myself reading all the way through without being bored.

3 out of 5 stars condescending.......2005-05-15

I couldn't put this book down, i'll give it that much.
But I didn't always like it.

While the narration was interesting and fairly well written, I felt a rather pretentious, and quite condescending air as he described the mongolians he met and the way in which they lived.

The descriptions of the landscape were beautiful, but it didn't hide the fact that I felt Stewart was narrating a 4 star resort tour of the country instead of what was supposed to be a wilderness trek.

None the less, I found it hard to put it down, maybe because the historial bits were so intruiging.

Book Description

Genghis Khan's armies breached the Great Wall of China, captured Beijing, and crushed all resistance in Afghanistan, Persia and Southern Russia by ruthless massacres and pillage. His armies also invaded Europe. Yet until now no historically reliable book about him has been written for a popular audience. This book analyses how Genghis Khan was able to unite the primitive Mongol tribes of the harsh Siberian steppes and organize them into highly mobile and disciplined troops. It shows how he created a regime so strong that his son was able to extend the conquests after the death of Genghis Khan himself. Leo de Hartog pays particular attention to the little-studied Mongol invasion of Europe and explores Europe's contacts with the great Khan.

3 out of 5 stars A Much-Need Book on Genghis Khan.......2005-12-09

Genghis Khan was more than a punchlune and formula villain. After spending his first forty years uniting the Mongols, he swept across Asia, toppling large portions of Chinese and Muslim civilization. His followers even invaded Europe and almost reached Italy. He built an empire that allowed trade across Asia at unprecedented levels, with concurrent exchanges of art, philosophy and idea. Yet despite these achievements, modern historians generally give him short shift. Supposedly "World History" classes barely mention Genghis Khan's life. It's as if, from our pedestal atop millenia of modern civilization, we're still a bit frightened by the fact that this horsemilk-drinking barbarian almost overran the entirety of the world's major civilizations.

Leo de Hartog tries to fill this gap with a popular history. Short but thorough, he starts off with an appropriately brief ten-page look at life among the Mongol tribes. Then we learn the meager facts about Genghis Khan's early life, and his fight to unite the Mongols. The bulk of the book covers the invasions of China and Persia, followed by Ogodei's rein and the attack through Russia into central Europe. Hartog spends considerable space of Genghis Khan's personality, analyzing what made him effective as a leader.

On the whole, Hartog has written an effective history. He's thorough, covering the invasions in great detail. He openly admits that parts of the story are not backed by good historical sources, and that ambiguity exists. At the micro level, however, "Genghis Khan: Conqueror of the World" is fairly mediocre. The translator has created sentences that are too words and awkward, word choice is sometimes off, and long lists of people and cities are presented without adequate explanation. Also, I would imagine that most Americans, like myself, know fairly little about the geography of Asia. The small maps at the back aren't enough to make up for this shortfall.

4 out of 5 stars Quite good.......2000-10-10

This is quite a good book overall. It is easy to follow and understand. If you are looking for a book on Genghis Khan's early life, I would not suggest this book, though. It basically starts at Genghis's conquering. The author talks more about the Khwarazm empire then I think is necessary, but it is interesting in its own way. Also, the book dedicates more on Ogodei than the title suggests.

This book is very informative of the battles and reasons for the battles of Genghis Khan. If you are looking for a book on the military campaigns of Genghis Khan, I would definately suggest this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great story, great writing.......2000-01-18

Read this book. I read the hardcover in case you are wondering why I am commenting on a book that is not out yet. I got this book out of a whim, not really knowing much about Genghis Khan. Wow, what a story. Could not put it down. Reads like a real nail-biting novel. They should definitely make a move from this book.

3 out of 5 stars Appalling, tedious, yet curiously entertaining........1999-06-25

Some chapters don't really deal with the wars but culture which is irrelevant. The prelude to the war with China and Khwarezm was interesting, but description was a little too tedious. Keeps repeating how he ravaged the cities. Interesting notes about the Christian hero Prester John.

5 out of 5 stars A valuable source for scholars of Mongol history.......2005-08-21

Boyle's excellent, readable, and well-annotated translation of Juvayni is an important resource for scholars of Mongol history. Juvayni is one of the few primary sources, and his work provides both a view of Mongol history and an interesting look at the cross-cultural interactions between the Mongols and conquered peoples. I highly recommend this book to all with an interest in Mongol history.

5 out of 5 stars Genghis Khan, THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD CONQUEROR.......1999-12-07

A book with extremely useful quotes and sayings. I would suggest everyone to read it so as to improve the vision for leadership and you don't need to have specific preoccupation with any subject like history or Philosophy etc but you will love this book when you read how Juvaini tries to justify the deeds of the Mongols and the embellished and beautified diction of JA Boyle will enable you to comprehend the subject matter of the book in it's true sense.

This book really grabbed my attention. The book is on a topic that I could read forever. Ghengis Khan is the only subject that doesn't make fall asleep in school.

                Book Description

The Second World War is a compact but comprehensive and absorbing history of the war. It examines the causes of the war, how it was won and lost, and its far-reaching consequences for humanity. In tracing the key events of both the European and the Far Eastern wars, R. A. C. Parker outlines clearly the strategies of the participants, the economies and societies that underlay them, and the strengths and weaknesses of their fighting forces. He describes the decisive battles and analyses the reasons for their outcome, paying close attention to special features of the war: mobile warfare, forced migration, the Holocaust, strategic and nuclear bombing. Unlike many other histories of the war this book places British and European involvement squarely in an international perspective, and the author never shies away from raising fundamental questions.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Concise, Comprehensive, Compact ...and Excellent.......2006-05-15

One of the other Amazon reviewers of this book called it "concise and comprehensive." A great summary.

We have all heard or seen or read so much about WW2 that information overload is perhaps the main roadblock in seeing that conflict in perspective.

Parker's "Short History" is perhaps the best short history of World War Two targeting an educated adult audience. It's not a controversial or revisionist book but it does provide a great overview, introduction, refresher or review, depending on how you decide to use it.

It also avoids the common trap of providing an overly American or British centric narrative of what was, after all, a global war.

4 out of 5 stars Good, concise, easy to read........2006-02-26

I read this book, in a translation to the portuguese, here in Brazil.About this subject, this book is concise, good and very easy to read. The best is when this book, talks about economies in World War II.The USA, to exemple, produced about 96,000 aircrafts in 1944.The biggest aircraft's production in human history.
The problem in this book is the lack of details about many battles and weapons used in World War II.

4 out of 5 stars Very good as a strategic level study.......2005-08-16

A very good study of World War II focusing on the strategic level of the war as well as its social and economi aspects. The reader will not find too many details about military operations, albeit there are some interesting points which are presented with exceptional clarity. The size of the book precludes any lengthy reference to particular battles, thus many of them are mentioned in only a few sentences or not at all (like the German campaign in the Balkans (1941), the liberation of Ukraine (1944), the battle of Berlin (1945) and the destruction of the Japanese Kwantug Army (1945)). This deficiency is balanced though by the wealth of statistics regarding production figures, human losses and economic data. Parker has also made a fine job analyzing the US-British relations on the strategic level, the reasons behind the decisions taken and the role of the USSR in the Allied camp. He is also honest about the great contribution of the Soviets to the war effort and the horrible destruction they caused to the German Army. Overall, a good introduction to World War II and a handy reference to its basic military and political dimensions.

4 out of 5 stars Analysis of the war.......2002-10-29

The book is very good. It analyzes the war and thus explains certain outcomes. However, because pages are spent on analysis, it could not cover the war in a wider scope. I personally prefer less analysis (I'll do that myself) and more on events, personalities, and scopes.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Concise Yet Comprehensive History Of WWII!.......2001-01-07

For serious students of the WWII era wishing to have a handy, concise, and yet quite comprehensive overview of the Second World War and its times by way of a one-volume effort, this is the book to start with. Unlike much more massive, detailed, and descriptive tomes such as Gerhard Weinberg's "A World At War", Sir Martin Gilbert's "The Second World War", or the new "A War To Be Won" by Murray and Millett, this book pares down the tremendous sweep and circumstances surrounding the war to a relatively brief (just over three hundred pages) and yet amazingly concise and comprehensive narrative. Indeed, Professors from Harvard to Stanford often assign this book for introductory courses on World War Two because it is both manageable and accurate.

Parker's narrative is informed by his matchless grasp of the relevant documents and official records as well as a unique feel for the way in which the various aspects of the conflict interweave and interact to create and sustain a worldwide conflagration. In his stirring and entertaining treatment, one finds a treasure trove of details, and at the same time also gains a better understanding of the way in which the economic, diplomatic, and military factors combine during the drift toward war in the late 1930s. In this sense the book is written with great verve and obvious historical impact.

Viewed in this way, the book can be considered a quite compact and yet still comprehensive overview of the war itself, how it began, its slow and horrific progress, and how it was both won by the Allies and lost by the Axis powers. Indeed, one comes away from the reading experience with a much improved and enhanced appreciation for the far-reaching impact the war had on humanity at large, since the war affected everyone, combatants, noncombatants, and onlookers alike. As Parker argues quite persuasively, the Second World War changed the course of the 20th century forever.

The author faithfully traces how the key events of the war progress, showing how the strategies of each of the participants as well as their indigenous populations and economies affect the course of the conflict. In looking at major battles and campaigns, Parker provides a wealth of insight that is disproportionately detailed compared to the length of the book, and provides the reader with a wonderfully informative, insightful, and entertaining reading experience. He discusses specific aspects of the war such as mobile warfare, the Holocaust, forced migration, and the use of the atomic bomb in a way that helps the reader to understand the importance of each and gives specific reasons as to how and why they occurred. This is a book that is easy to recommend to anyone wanting a relatively concise and yet immensely rewarding reading experience. Enjoy!

Thanks everyone for the great reviews!! I must however point out that being the neice of Anthony Pastula and Gene Aldrich that this book is somewhat misleading, basically because it is from one person's viewpoint that had to be the hero. The plane, btw, didn't exactly crash. After being told several times by both my Uncles that they were running out of fuel, IT RAN OUT OF GAS!!! Not something the hero of his book would confess to I suppose. My Uncle's were also not helpless, uneducated, weaklings as they are sometimes made out to be either. They weren't that GREEN. They also had nothing to do with this book, because obviously, their recounts of their time at sea didn't match Dixon's. They both chose to step out of the spotlight and go on with their lives. For those that did wonder in the other reviews, they not only remained the closest of friends but they became brother-in-laws! Gene married Tony's sister. To add to that, Gene's sister married Tony's brother and that's where I come from! It is truly by the grace of God and Gene's strong personal believe in the Lord that he shared with the other two men that saved them.

                5 out of 5 stars The Raft.......2006-11-01

Imagine being on a raft in the middle of the Pacific Ocean for 34 days without food, water, and shelter. In the fictional book The Raft by Robert Trumbull this is a reality.
The main character of this story is officer Dixon, who was the pilot of a plane that crashed in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Officer Dixon was a leader of the two other men, Gene and Tony. He was determined to sail the raft and bring them back to safety. He made most of the decisions for the others. The raft was only 8ft by 4-foot, and was only meant for one person. The only supplies they had were a pocketknife and a gun. When it rained out they used their clothes to catch the rain to drink. To catch their food they used their knife and a gun. They caught some fish, and a tiger shark to eat. They had to eat the food raw because they had no way to cook it. Gene had an encounter with a shark. He gets a shark bite on his hand, but he manages to survive. They are not aware that a hurricane is about to hit them.
I would recommend this book because it is very interesting, it kept my attention, and it was suspenseful.

                4 out of 5 stars Dramatic and inspiring, in a 1942 style.......2005-07-05

The story is an astounding tale of survival - 3 Navy airmen completely lost ast sea, bobbling in a tiny rubberized raft before the development of more advanced navigational equipment, and more attention to survival kits that came about later in the war.

While the narrative does touch on moments of anger and doubt, it is told with a staunch 1940s, WW II bravado that concentrates more on the bravery and resourcefulness of the 3 protagonists. Whereas today, a story of this sort would probably include the psychological and philosophical issues that arose, and the deep thoughts that men in this predicament would undoubtedly experience, the tale comes across instead like a John Wayne movie. The courage and fortitude of Dixon (the narrator) putting the morale of his raftmates above the secret truths he knows - that things might be worse than they appeared (and one has to wonder how much worse they could possibly get!) seems to come up a few times, for example. Very little weakness, very little disagreement, very little real fear is described, or even acknowledged during the ordeal these men suffered.

It's a fascinating story, and a tale of resroucefulness that is inspiring, but I'd agree with one of the earlier reviewers that "something is missing." I think it's what's hidden under the shroud of what was the style of the day. Bravado. It lacks the vulnerabilty that might might make the story more human, more firightening, more true to life. I believe this is what ultimately keeps you from getting as involved in the characters and events as you might, and feeling that you are really experiencing what happened on that tiny raft, adrift as sea.

5 out of 5 stars Clearly written, gripping story.......2003-12-07

This is an account of 3 crewmembers of a ditched bomber surviving for 34 days in a very small, ill-equipped raft. The story is interesting enough to tell itself, so I felt that the straightforward writing style was quite appropriate.

Although the book was actually written by a journalist, it is written in the first person as if the pilot, Harold Dixon, were telling the tale.

The events occurred in early 1942, and the book was also published in 1942. The edition I read was the original, and did not mention John M. Waters anywhere, so I don't know why his name is listed as an author in the 1992 reprint.

The fact that this book was written shortly after Pearl Harbor is borne home by the fact that there are several details (such as the location of the island where they washed up) that the author omits "for reasons of national security". Also, the jacket of the original 1942 edition says "When you have finished reading this book, don't just place it on a shelf. Our men need books as well as guns. Books build morale. Send this book today. Average book requires 6 cents postage." They give the address of the 4th Corps Area Headquarters in Atlanta.

If you enjoy this sort of tale, you'll probably also like "Adrift: Seventy-six Days Lost at Sea", by Steve Callahan, a bit more philosophical account of his more recent lone ordeal in the Atlantic.

4 out of 5 stars I'm reliving my youth with this one........2003-04-25

I first read it in junior high school 35 years ago. Took me about two seatings to read it . Very engrossing for a seventh grader.
It is a straight ahead narrative about three ordinary but resourcefull sailors whose plane went down & they were marooned in a rubber raft on the vast ocean during World WarII. They fought off starvation, heat, boredom & all the dangers the ocean affords. Boys will like it even though it doesn't have the violence of most war stories. Tom Parker delivers the telling in a good tight reading style that captures the tone of the story with out adding or detracting from the natural drama. Easy to stay with on a long drive.

                Book Description

Never Surrender is the dramatic first-person account of Earl Anderson's fight for survival during and after the devastating Japanese attack on the Philippine Islands of WW II. Earl Anderson was an ordinary Navy sailor placed under extraordinary circumstances. He narrowly avoided death when the invading Japanese army on the Bataan peninsula overwhelmed the besieged American forces. He fought alongside the Marines on the fortress-island of Corregidor, where American forces made their courageous last stand against the relentless Japanese invaders. After a brutal fight on Corregidor, he was captured and became a POW for three and a half years.

Earl Anderson used extraordinary willpower, ingenuity, and teamwork to survive starvation and systematic abuse in the infamous POW Camp Cabanatuan in the Philippines. He and his buddies continued their shared fight for survival when they were transferred by a Japanese "hell-ship" to Yokohama, Japan, where they were forced to work as slave labor in a shipyard. While POWs were dying all around them, Earl Anderson and his buddies never gave up and never surrendered. Willpower, teamwork, innovation, and luck enabled them to survive many life-threatening challenges in the deadly camps-and ultimately to endure the apocalyptic bombing raids on Yokohama and Tokyo.

                5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-02-27

Never Surrender is the most intense WW II book I have ever read. The fact that it was written in the first person by an actual survivor of the battles and the POW camps really brought the story home for me. The main character in the true life adventure is also the book's author. Sometimes he is on the periphery of battles and at other times he is right in the middle of it!

I was very surprised by the humor and wit of the POW survivor, Earl Anderson, who wrote the book. Many times, I found myself laughing at a hilarious anecdote told by the writer a moment before I was holding my breath as the writer's life was in danger. The writer uses the interesting technique of telling the story as if it is happening in the present. This brings an immediacy to the story that is not present in other WW II books. I was shocked and fascinated as the story unfolded. The writer's personal experiences reveal truths about the Philippines battles and the Japanese POW camps that I never knew about before. This book is an entertaining adventure story as well as a harrowing tale of survival. I would recommend this book to anyone and not just to those people interested in WW II.

This was an amazing story of one man's need to survive. I liked how it dealt with the history of the time as well as what Earl was going through. Well written.

                    Book Description

R.A.C. Parker's marvelous history of the Second World War has already been published in Britain to wide acclaim. Kenneth O. Morgan, writing in the New Statesman and Society, hailed it as "a magnificent achievement, a tour de force....As a one-volume survey, it is unlikely to be surpassed."
And the Independent praised it as "a miracle of compression." Based on a matchless knowledge of the documentary evidence, Struggle for Survival provides an authoritative treatment of the military, diplomatic, and economic aspects of the war, written with great force and insight.
Parker deftly explores every major campaign, clearly explaining the background for each (Hitler's reasons for attacking Russia, for example, or the Japanese decision to attack Pearl Harbor). He examines the decisive importance of major factors (the central role, for instance, of the Soviet
defeat of the German invasion) and seemingly minor ones (how the shortage of landing craft dictated Anglo-American strategy). Along the way he reveals mistakes made by both sides--such as General Mark Clark's failure to cut off the German retreat in Italy because he wanted the glory of capturing
Rome--and sheds light on major personalities, depicting Stalin as an increasingly flexible commander while Hitler grew ever more unreasonable.
Struggle for Survival explores critical themes of the war in depth, with chapters devoted to strategic bombing, morale, the wartime economies, and the Holocaust, weaving them into a coherent narrative of the course of events. Parker also provides a clear summary of the aftermath, examining
the rise of the Cold War from before the fall of Berlin to the start of the Korean War, and revealing the far-reaching effects of the incredible destruction and post-war migrations.
Struggle for Survival presents an unprecedented one volume history of the Second World War, offering a sweeping survey of events that omits none of the drama that filled the years between 1939 and 1945. With 24 intriguing photos and a number of helpful maps, it is a fascinating and objective
look at the central struggle of our times.

"Struggle For Survival" by R.A.C. Parker, Sub-titled, " The History Of the Second World War". Oxford University Press, 1990.

This is a small book (only 328 pages) and is therefore easy to handle. But, even though small, Parker's book covers all the important subjects of the Second World War. The chapters are arranged more or less chronologically, ranging from Chamberlain's pre-war "appeasement" to a final assessment chapter entitled, "Casualties, Crisis and Change". Although the author is a Fellow of Modern History at Queen's College, Oxford, he states , up front, that he has "... tried to escape any British prejudices in considering the conduct of the allies". (Page v.) In my opinion, Parker has done a pretty good job of stating the facts and NOT taking British, American, French , German, etc. side in any argument. He has included a chapter on strategic bombing, and, interesting, it appears that he believes strategic bombing did NOT work in German occupied Europe, but that bombing did work against the Empire of Japan. Chapter 14 deals with the defeat of Japan and the use of the atomic bomb. Chapter 17 deals with the "Murder of European Jews" and the theme of unnecessary and unrequited killing is finished in Chapter 18, "Casualties, Crisis and Change".

I used this book as quick but complete reference in a World War II course I was taking at Bridgewater State College, when I was working on my MA in History.
