understanding myself.......2007-05-01
After reading Stepping Out of the Bubble a year ago, I went back and read it again for a second time. I was able to pick up even more information this time around that helped me understand and overcome some of my own internal conflicts. This is a book you can read at any point in your life and always find information that pertains to that particular moment. Krehbiel has a way of explaining things that others may consider unexplainable. Whether you are a student, a teacher, or just a guy like me, this book can and will change your life.
A practical resource for better living.......2006-03-27
For me, "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" was reminiscent of the renowned books of author, M. Scott Peck, in the style of presenting profound insights into sensible, easy-to-understand language and clear ideas an average person can relate to. Practicing Licensed Professional Counselor and Nationally Certified Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist and author of "Stepping Out Of The Bubble", James Krehbiel proficiently shares a portion of his expertise, condensing great weight into accessible and workable solutions for a more fulfilling life's plan.
The "bubble" represents our security and comfort zone, but it is also the inner place where we store the pain of our past experiences and the unpleasant reality of that not being made conscious which keeps us bound in unhealthy and self-defeating patterns. Staying within this bubble limits our emotional responsiveness as we numb ourselves to the coexistence even as unresolved issues unconsciously filter forth. To step outside of the bubble is to courageously examine the contents in all honesty and to face life's reality outside of the bubble. Once outside the bubble, one can move forward to experience life in more emotional depth, fullness and passion. "Being a fully functioning individual is about being true to whom you are and letting things be the way they are," explains author, James Krehbiel.
With brilliant and compassionate understanding, Mr. Krehbiel briefly details methods used and pertinent case examples within his therapy practice. "Self-regulation is a goal of therapy. I educate people in the fact that all the answers are ultimately within." "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" strives to do the same, by giving information on how we become trapped in the bubble and how beneficial the making of conscious choices to leave, can be.
Some of the many topics included within this book are: being assertive, characteristics of an "authentic" person, the integration of each of our different personality parts, the difference between true guilt and false guilt, setting boundaries, addictions and addictions to "manic" relationships, awareness (staying in the moment or mindfulness), grounding, honoring one's inner voice, panic attacks, OCD and mood disorders. The section regarding kids and parenting was exceptional, in my opinion, and I found many points about discipline that made much sense. Also appreciated was the section relating to religion (dogma) versus faith (spiritual) as well as what needed to be said about pop culture.
I enjoyed reading "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" and would recommend it to anyone. It is enriching and inspirational.

Stepping Out Of The Bubble by James P. Krehbiel, Is an outstanding book on Counseling Therapy. Krehbiel, is able to put life patterns and fears into perspective so that the lay person can fully understand the mystery that most think is behind counseling. His approach to show that so much of what we seek answers for is within ourselves and with the right counsellor we can become free and step out of the Bubble or Bubbles that a lot of us are in.
This book should be a gift to every teen and their parents, no home should be without it.
Gaining Courage to Live Outside of the Bubble.......2006-02-25
James P. Krehbiel's Stepping Out of the Bubble was a fascinating read. I found myself underlining various passages. His explanation of how we get stuck in the bubble (comfort zone), and how we find our way out is powerful. It provided me with hope as I move through my own personal journey. I found myself experiencing an emotional reaction to many of the case examples and concepts he explored. He definitely hit some "hot buttons" in my life. But Mr. Krehbiel also provided specific guidelines and tools for stepping out of the bubble. At one point he says, "Courage can be defined by those who live outside the bubble as opposed to those who live in it. I like to compare stepping out of the bubble to wading into the water."
His chapter which includes ideas on multidimensional thinking is appropriate in today's political climate. He indicates that true dialogue takes into consideration the appreciation for differences in opinions. He makes some profound statements about pop culture's affect on the lives of today's children. He also gives parents tools and resources for assisting their children in bettering their behavior. The book ends with a resounding "yes" to life with a hopeful, powerful way of perceiving and reframing life's problems. This was an excellent book!
My Review of a Great Book.......2006-02-23
"Stepping Out of the Bubble : Reflections On the Pilgrimage of Counseling Therapy by James P. Krehbiel is an amazing and outstanding book that provides help and direction to the many people that are suffering from problems described in this book.
I was amazed at how many of the problems and challenges, that the author writes about, are problems and challenges I have seen many people suffer with.
The counseling theory and practice information in this book provides a direction for people that have a problem and are willing to go to counseling and risk moving forward in their journey toward finding personal growth and development, and eventually stepping out of the bubble.
Many people have problems and challenges that they never seek help for and they and their loved ones continue to suffer. This book goes a long way in bringing the thought of counseling to people and helping people to better understand the counseling process.
To author James P. Krehbiel thank you for writing your great book. I am convinced your book will help many people and because of your book many more people will step out of the bubble. I recommend this book very highly and also feel it would be a great college text.

Book Description
Here is one of the most useful books on relationships you will ever read. This book challenges you to explore the unknown depths of the soul and claim your individuality, while learning to connect with others in a healthy way. The term "comfort zone" describes the internal sanctuary you create by developing and maintaining your boundaries. Only through conscious creation of your comfort zone can you develop the ability to be present in body, mind, and spirit in order to create healthy relationships. Only by defining yourself can you connect with others.
Rokelle Lerner addresses the practical issues of maintaining both your separateness and your sacred domain of connection: she explains how you can walk a spiritual path with practical feet. Lerner has filled this book with her clients' personal stories, modeling potential problems that can arise in relationships due to unformed or violated boundaries. You will learn how to stop boundary intruders and boundary distancers; mend the body and soul; deal with shame; heal emotional, intellectual and spiritual boundaries; set limits; unlock bonding patterns; and sustain your comfort zones while you do the soul work required for further personal growth.
Customer Reviews:
the gift of boundaries.......2001-12-13
Living in the Comfort Zone really meant a lot to me not only because she explained the importance of boundaries in relationships but because she explained very clearly WHY some of us don't have a very easy time with them. Some of us have virtually no experience with setting boundaries and others have them so rigid that nothing can penetrate.. not even the good things. She explains the patterns and how sometimes people are distancers and sometimes intruders of other's boundaries. It helps me to understand the dynamics behind a behavior or lack of it and THEN to get suggestions to work towards a more desired outcome. The author has done a wonderful job of explaining a very complex subject and offering really practical and helpful suggestions.
Barely OK, should have been a 40-page booklet, never a book.......2001-03-16
I have read about 50 books in the self-help genre, most of them contain important, valid, useful information. However, most of them could also be condensed to a booklet. Yet, a booklet wouldn't profit as well as a full-length paperback. Consequently, concepts relatively simple to comprehend are over explained, drawn out, and result in fluffing up the page numbers.
Living in the Comfort Zone is the worst example of this stuff-to-fluff type of self-help writing. Valid points, especially the bulleted lists were helpful and informative. But a whole book? No way.
Read it if no others are available and you need some general pointers, otherwise go directly to Better Boundaries (Black & Enns).

Product Description
"But...What if I Fail?" is a life changing manual that stems from a very common question we ask ourselves before doing anything that challenges our mental comfort level. This book is a beam of sunlight shining into a dark room that illuminates the hidden factors that cause anxiety, doubt, and mediocrity, thereby exposing counter-productive behaviors that would otherwise go unnoticed in your life. You might be surprised to know what "fear" actually is and how it works, or even why "failure" is as healthy as a glass of water, literally. Whether you are struggling through some things right now, fairly well-off or an established multi-billionaire, "But. . .What if I Fail?" will challenge you to examine the possibility that you could be settling for less than your full potential in an area known as "The Comfort-Zone".

Customer Reviews:
very well written.......2007-08-05
When I first started reading this book I couldn't put it down and was disappointed that it wasn't very long. Since I finished it, I have reread parts of it because I like them so much. "Medic" is written like a novel (as was mentioned in previous reviews), which makes the book extremely easy to read, since it's more than a list of what the author did. The fact that the book seems like a novel is not a fault. It allows you to get into the book and I don't think that the historical value of the narrative was diminished by it. I got into all of the characters in the book, all of whom were portrayed in good detail. The characters and their plights gave good insight into how war affects those involved emotionally. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a good book or who is interested in Vietnam War literature.
"We're here for each other ...".......2007-08-01
Ben Sherman was a conscientious objector who nonetheless served in Vietnam as a medic. As a combat medic myself, much of what he retells here is spot on. However, parts of the book seemed a bit contrived, hence the 3 stars.
Sherman's courage is beyond reproach - to go into a combat zone unarmed (even as a medic) takes real stones. The fear, apprehension and constant wondering if he was "good enough" to do right by his soldiers was eerily familiar. His anguish and self-blame at those he could not save speaks volumes about his character. The descriptions of Vietnam and of his experiences in (and out) of combat are vivid. However more than once I couldn't help but think that he was retelling sea-stories or dramatizing - particularly in the epilogue where he retells meeting the family of a fallen comrade. While this may have happened, it seems inplausable and feels as if it were written for emotional impact.
Volumes have been written about Vietnam, many of them memoirs from those who served on the ground. While _Medic!_ offers a new perspective (from that of a CO - conscientious objector), it is not among the better of the lot.
Memoir or novel?.......2006-08-21
Reviewer Mazza (11.15.04) mentions that the book "reads more like a novel than a memoir." Exactly, and that's the problem---which is it? As reviewer Bunch (1.24.06) notes, there are several events that don't ring true. For example, in 1985 the author and a friend visited a deserted Wall at 10 o'clock at night. As he knelt and wept in front of the name of a soldier whose life he had been unable to save in `69, who should appear but that same man's mother and brother (to whom he apparently said nothing). There are many books written by Vietnam vets. Read this one if you aren't troubled by repeated dramatic coincidences.
unique, interesting perspective of vietnam.......2006-08-08
I found the book to be a pretty sharp criticism of the U.S. Army and how it treated its own soldiers. The fact that Sherman was in more danger from his fellow G.I.s than the Viet Cong is very troubling but we hear these stories all the time.
Fact or fiction?.......2006-01-25
I had trouble putting this book down after I started reading it. The thing that stands out is the lurid detail that the author goes into. This is not your average, sanitized first-hand account of the Vietnam War.If you're looking for a book that captures the gist of being a medic, conscientious objector, and soldier in Vietnam, this is the book. Its entertaining, the characters are likeable, and the storyline contains very few slow spots.
However, I am giving this book only 3 stars for a reason. There are a couple of coincidences in the book that I believe the author created with his artistic license. Number one is Ben meeting up with Buckshot on the battlefield after both had been left for dead. Number two is visiting the Vietnam Memorial and running into a person copying the name of the person whom Ben let die. Theres a few other unplausible situations that I'm starting to doubt the authenticity of.

Of Orphans and Warriors: Inventing Chinese-American Culture.......2000-05-12
This is an intensely frustrating book. Despite the interesting subject matter and useful historical summaries, I found this book to be initially engaging but also massively under-theorised.
The best segments of the book are Chun's analysis of the post WW-II period as a key time in the reformulation of Chinese American identity. However, her use of bland generalizations instead of demonstrated theoretical links mean that her analyses rarely proceed beyond the obvious.
Chun's highly biographical approach is at its best when she deals with characters with long paper trails. Her analysis of literary figures is also informative.
However, we are only given incidental examination of key issues such as gender, race, class-structure and religion. The social and cultural milieus in which key informants moved are given scant attention for a work of cultural analysis. In this regard, her discussion of the Sixties and Seventies (for example) read more like a summary rather than an investigation: Which specific elements of Black Panther philosophy (as opposed to a generalized 'stick it to the man' factor), if any, appealed to the Asian American architects of Yellow Power? Did the examples of feminist and womanist workers such as Germaine Greer and Angela Davis have any effect on young Chinese American women? How did the mechanics of desire(the fetishization of Asian women the feminization Asian men)factor into the Sexual Revolution? Unfortunately, Chun does not give us sufficient evidence to evaluate the claims she makes. By the same token, unfortunate errors of detail (such as the use of Lin Yutang's given name rather than his family name, on p. 51 and 53)also act to compromise Chun's authority. While her 'talk-story' style might be viewed as an attempt to challenge academic genres of writing, this work, at base, is an academic project(and not fiction) and therefore must be assessed as such.
I am extremely sympathetic to the goals and aims of this book and applaud Chun's attempt to address some interesting questions but ultimately I found that this book fails to deliver much in the way of truly satisfying nuanced analysis (as opposed to the representation of experience).
Of Orphans and Warriors.......2000-01-07
Excellent book! As a second generation Asian American woman, I found this book to be revealing, eye-opening and inspiring.

Customer Reviews:
Trying to save $$.......2005-05-05
This is a comprehensive geology book with good graphics that illustrate hard to understand concepts. This edition is almost exactly the same as the 2003 fourht edition. However be aware that the chapters are in a different order in the third edition
Excellent Introductory Undergraduate Geology Textbook.......2001-12-20
The textbook is very well written and beautifully and effectively illustrated. Critical topics, especially plate tectonics, are thoroughly discussed. The review questions at the end of the chapters are very useful for recitations and laboratories. The glossary is also helpful, but not all bolded terms in the text (such as theory and hypothesis) are located in the glossary. The appendices include mineral identification tables, unit conversions, and information on topographic and geologic maps. The third edition has been extensively reorganized and most of the changes are definite improvements of an already superior textbook. One negative point: one of my students had a malfunctioning CD in her copy of the third edition.
A nice casual book!.......1999-10-02
I took a base-level intro course on geology and we used this book, and I found it to be very straight forward and casual. The soft cover was durable and easy to manipulate....which means a lot when you have to make the most of minimal space!
Fantastic illustration and easy to read, clear explanations!.......1999-06-22
Quite a good book and ideal to focus a course around
