Customer Reviews:
Not recommended reading!.......2006-02-06
Let me save you some time and money. The first few chapters I found to be slow and roughly written. I don't feel that the information flowed together. It felt more like reading a rough draft. This is probably the worst book I've read so far concerning blended families. By the time I reached chapters 10 & 11 I had to put this book down. The author was beginning to offend me. Let me quote some of his passages.
In one section called "stepfather and stepchilren" the author is talking about the living situation and says, "in turn the stepfather will live in the same household as his stepchildren and he will be there when they wake in the morning and to hear their grumbling every night." Grumbling? That sounds negative to me. Almost as if his stepchildren are annoying him. Then under his section giving stepfather's "basic tips" he says that, ex-wives usually discuss thier former marital problems with the new fiance. He suggests the stepfather-to be listen intently and hear all the facts. Okay, sounds harmless enough. But then he goes on to suggest that the stepfather (or stepfather -to be)ask her friends about her former marriage. He then goes on to say that many men have been led down the isle under false pretenses. He feels that if the former marriage included fights about the children it's safe to assume she hasn't changed any. He says to get her side of the story and based on what he is told if he thinks the former husband (the children's natural father) was right,(right about what I don't know. He never clarifies that one) then not to expect her to change just because she's remarrying. Now in his section titled, "advice for the stepfather's wife" I was a little taken back by what he writes. Or maybe a better term would be "offended" by what he writes. He says that "when a natural father does not live in the home with the children it's important that the household not be dominated by the mother. A boy needs a male figure to emulate. If the mother dominates, the son will likely be dominated by his wife when he grows up and marries." In another section he goes on to say that before a women marries she needs to consider her finances. Remarrying could mean losing her alimony and she shouldn't blame her new husband for her reduced finances. He says that it's possible that the wife to be may want to continue enjoying her "more- than- adequate child support payments" instead of getting married. What kind of garbage is that?
I think this is one bitter man who may have been bitten by marrying a women with children and it didn't work. So automaticly it's the womans fault. At least that's what it seems like to me. He minimizes the role of mother and stepmother, and I find that offensive. If you like this kind of advice, than by all means buy the book. But if you're like me and agree that the household is run by BOTH adults, and where BOTH adults are equal in authority, then forget reading this one. There are far better books on the subject.
reviews.......2006-02-01
Please note to anyone, who like myself, is researching a proper book to buy on step parenting, that the reviewer, Mr. Gerlach, has written the same criticism for many books offered by Amazon and is, I believe, promoting himself.
I have not read this book but was tired of seeing this roving negative advertisement.
readable, commendable scope - and misses key points.......2004-07-28
I have specialized in providing professional education and therapy to divorced, courting, and re/wedded couples since 1981. I am (a) 66, (b) a stepgrandson, stepson, and ex-stepfather and stepbrother, (c) an invited Board member of the Stepfamily Association of America, (d) a contributing editor to 'Your Stepfamily Online,' and (e) the author of six personal-growth and family-relations books.
I recommend "Step-by-Stepparenting..." to readers who want a readable, realistic introduction to typical stepfamily uncertainties and problems. I do not recommend it to readers seeking to avoid or resolve the core problems that cause widespread stepfamily discontent and re/divorce in our country.
The many vignettes author Eckler provides are representative, relevant, and instructive. However, the book omits explanation of and recommendations for mastering four core hazards that (I believe) every co-parent ands supporter must understand:
1) Keystone: why and how to assess and reduce co-parents' psychological wounds from childhood (vs. divorce);
2) the origin and impacts of blocked grief in adults and kids, and how to spot and reduce it;
3) co-parent unawareness of five key topics: (a) normal personality formation, composition, and function; (b) keys to high-nurturance families and relationships, (c) effective communication skills, (d) healthy 3-level grief, and (e) specific stepfamily realities and implications. And...
4) little effective re/marital and co-parenting help (i.e. courtship coaching, classes, informed counseling, co-parent support groups) available in most communities and the media.
In my experience, these factors will often block the best-intentioned adults from following well-meant co-parenting advice like this book provides. If ignored, the four factors inexorably promote (a) choosing the wrong people to re/wed, for the wrong reasons, at the wrong time, and (b) subsequent escalating stresses and potential re/divorce. Awareness, acceptance, and discussion can reduce the first three stressors, and help co-parents to achieve the high-nurturance stepfamilies they long for.

Book Description
The dramatic account of the last British bomber raid — the long-range attack on Stanley airfield that opened the Falklands War.
Before dawn on May 1st, 1982, a lone RAF Vulcan B2 bomber made its way towards the runway at Port Stanley airport. It was aiming to strike the first blow of Britain’s campaign to retake the Falklands. The flight was the culmination of a huge military effort and was the longest-range attack in aviation history. It was also the last time that the RAF flew heavy bombers into combat, before the old techniques and equipment were replaced with the digital, fly-by-wire, precision-guided weaponry of modern warfare.
When war broke out, the Vulcan was already facing retirement. The aircraft had to be completely overhauled, and the story of how a seemingly endless list of problems and unexpected difficulties was overcome is a story of true British ingenuity.
The mission came perilously close to disaster. Two Vulcan bombers took off in the late evening of April 30th to begin a twelve-hour round trip to the Falklands. Within minutes of take-off, the lead Vulcan was forced to turn back because of mechanical difficulties, leaving Vulcan 607 and her crew alone to undertake a mission.
Vulcan 607 is the dramatic retelling of this singular mission. Using extensive interviews with the combatants, residents of Stanley, and military command, Rowland White has reconstructed the flight and its preparation in gripping detail.
From the Hardcover edition.

Non-fiction sounding like fiction........2007-07-20
The Brits call it "muddling through." It's a variation on "the best laid plans" theme and it's a sort of a national persona for them.
In 1982, Argentina occupied the Falkland Islands and South Georgia Island in the South Atlantic, some 8,000 miles from the Britsh Isles. The true ownership of the islands is complex, with successive influxes of explorers from France, Spain, Argentina and the UK arriving and claiming the islands. From that neutral statement, it is, however, a case of squatters' rights that the Brits had a solid claim.
Cut to Argentina, where the current junta is trying to shore up its claim to govern with bread and circuses. The decision is reached that occupying Las Malvinas - as the Falklands are known to them - will stir up enough nationalistic pride to somewhat offset the arrest by night of dissidents and double-digit inflation. The junta counted on two things. First, the Brits weren't serious about defending the islands. Second, there was nothing they could do to defend them.
The bulk of this extremely well-wriiten and researched story is how the British military proved both conclusions incorrect. The Royal Navy dispatched on - literally - a moment's notice a rag-tag collection of submarines asnd amphibious assault vessels to take the islands back. At the same time, there were major concerns that Argentine air units stationed at the airfield outside Port Stanley could attack the fleet with long-range Exocet anti-shipping missiles.
Eliminating this threat required the airfield be disabled by cutting the runway with bombs. But, the nearest base that could be used to stage such a mission was Ascension Island, at 4,000 miles away, roughly midway between the UK and the Falklands. This was well beyond the range of the soon-to-be-retired V-Force of long range jet bombers and tankers. But, that force did have a notional capability to fly such a mission if a lot of things played out the right way
Vulcan 607 tells the story of how the mission was conceived, assets allocated and then executed. In essence, the plan involved staging a collection of bombers and tankers on Ascension Island, then launching just one bomber and a group of tankers at the Falklands. The mission profile entailed tankers refilling other tankers that refueled yet other tankers; all for the purpose of keeping that one bomber - Vulcan MH607 -in the air.
And, it worked. The single bomber reached the Port Stanley airfield and cut the runway with a string of bombs. It then refueled on the way back to Ascension Island - itself a nerve-wracking event as bomber and tanker sought out each other before one or the other ran out of fuel.
That's the bare bones of the story. The detail is much more tense and dramatic, with planes turning back with equipment failures, failed refueling and excessive fuel consumption.
White relates the story in a solid conversational style, encorporating good mix of official documents and personal recollections from participants. If there is a flaw in the book, it is that the post-mission events are treated in a cursory manner. But then again, the book is about the mission not the war itself.

Book Description
The extraordinarily rich cultural legacy of the Roman world has had a profound affect world civilization. Roman achievements in architecture, law, politics, literature, war, and philosophy serve as the foundation of modern Western society. Now, for the first time in an A-Z format, A Dictionary of the Roman Empire assembles the people, places, events, and ideas of this remarkable period in one easy-to-use source. With over 1,900 entries covering more than five hundred years of Roman history, from Julius Caesar and the Gallic Wars (59-51 B.C.) to the fall of Romulus Augustus, the last Roman emperor (476 A.D.), this accessible guide provides quick reference to one of the most studied periods of all antiquity. Every aspect of Roman life is included. Here are profiles of the great emperors, such as Marcus Aurelius, one of the most profoundly intellectual monarchs in western civilization, and the aberrant Gaius Caligula, who, after draining the Roman treasury with his eccentric behavior, made it a capital crime for citizens not to bequeath him their estates. Informative entries describe the complex workings of Roman government, such as census taking, the creation of civil service, coinage, and the venerable institution of the Senate, and offer insight into the various trends and cultural tastes that developed throughout Roman history. For example, a discussion on baths, the most common type of building in the Roman Empire, demonstrates the unique intermingling of luxury, community, recreation, and, in the provinces, an association with Rome, that served as the focus of any city aspiring to greatness. Other entries describe the practice of paganism, marriage and divorce, ludi (public games held to entertain the Roman populace), festivals of the Roman year, and gluttony (epitomized by famous gourmands such as the emperor Vitellius, who according to the historian Suetonius, lived for food, banqueting three or four times a day, routinely vomiting up his meal and starting over). Also featured are longer essays on such topics as art and architecture, gods and goddesses, and the military, as well as a chronology, a short glossary of Roman terms, and appendices listing the emperors of the Empire and diagram the often intertwined family trees of ruling dynasties. Comprehensive, authoritative, and illustrated with over sixty illustrations and maps, A Dictionary of the Roman Empire provides easy access to the remarkable civilization upon which Western society was built.

Enormously helpful.......2004-01-26
I have been reading Gibbon's DECLINE AND FALL, but I suffer from a major disability: I have never studied Roman history at all. Therefore, while I know some names, I don't have a sharp understanding of the time periods under consideration.
In reading Gibbon, I have been keeping this volume by my side, and it has been more useful than I had possibly imagined that it would be. I haven't gotten into the later periods that Gibbon covers, but at least on the earlier periods of the Roman Empire, this dictionary has had entries on nearly everything that I have wanted to look up.
I highly recommend it.
A Must Have for Roman History Enthusiasts........1999-08-31
From the Abdagaeses to Zstommas, a superb collection of entries on the peoples places and things that made up the Roman world, including those who influenced but never fell within the sway of Roman power. Loads and loads of superb information, well cross referenced. By no means flawless, however. The illustrations are a mere afterthought and add little to the volume's presentation. Some of the articles are curiously stilted and awkwardly constructed like there was a rush to get them in under a deadline. A caveat to anyone looking for an all in one volume on Roman history, this dictionary covers the Empire only, with events and characters from the Republic and Kingdom presented only in reference to how they contributed to the Imperial Epoch or not at all.
All in all, a great buy for anyone building a Roman history library. Ave Roma Aerterna!!!

I enjoyed reading this book immensely. It seems the perfect book to introduce life in the ancient world, but even more experienced history-readers can find fun facts in this book. The illustrations are beautiful, and very helpful.
Review of the Encyclopedia of the Ancient World.......2001-02-28
This is an outstanding book on life in ancient China, Egypt, Greece and Rome. It is well-written and easy to use with outstanding illustrations. The information is broken down into useful areas suitable for both adults and children. It deals with all areas of life and beliefs in these ancient cultures. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in reading and learning about life in the ancient world.

A Good Reference.......2002-01-20
This encyclopedia is a comprehensive reference of Ancient Rome. Through the years it has been very helpful in finding information about lesser-known Romans. In addition to being alphabetical, it includes an extensive index, a glossary of titles, black and white drawings and several genealogical charts of the families that ruled the Roman Empire.
Based on my good experiences with this book, I have also bought Bunson's Encyclopedia of the Middle Ages.
I do not understand what the other "reader" is referring to. According to the encyclopedia, Crassus died in 53 BC and the battle of Carrhae took place in 53 BC, too. I can not find any reference to 55 BC at all!
Excellent and indespensible.......2001-06-02
I've had this book for several years and still find it a facinating reference. It's comprehensive and useful for any student of ancient Rome. If you wish to find information about some aspect of the Roman world, chances are you'll find it here.
The book fails in its primary function, as a reference work........1997-07-31
I opened this book with some anticipation and was immediately let down. Misspelling and mistakes dog almost every page. Did you know that Crassus died in both 55 and 53BC? Gives some meaning to Shakespeare's 'Julius Caesar' that "cowards die many times before their deaths." It struck me as a book of easy compilations from, at most, secondary sources. I would prefer the more expensive, more intellectual and more satisfying Cambridge Dictionary of the Ancient World

Book Description
This is the first English translation and the first modern critical edition of Gervase of Tilbury's Otia Imperialia. Gervase wrote the Otia Imperialia in the early thirteenth century for his patron, the Holy Roman Emperor Otto IV. It presents an encyclopedic melange of cosmographical, historical, and geographical information and a wealth of learned and original accounts of folklore and popular belief. It also contains advice to Otto and pertinent remarks on the relationship between Empire and Papacy, together with scientific and theological speculation. The edition also includes Gervase's recently discovered Commentary on the Lord's Prayer. Gervase was a voracious and eclectic reader; his many borrowings are identified in this fully annotated edition.

Book Description
The Handbook of Logic in Artificial Intelligence and Logic Programming is a multi-volume work covering all major areas of the application of logic to artificial intelligence and logic programming. The authors are chosen on an international basis and are leaders in the fields covered. Volume 5 is the last in this well-regarded series. Logic is now widely recognized as one of the foundational disciplines of computing. It has found applications in virtually all aspects of the subject, from software and hardware engineering to programming languages and artificial intelligence. In response to the growing need for an in-depth survey of these applications the Handbook of Logic in Artificial Intelligence and its companion, the Handbook of Logic in Computer Science have been created. The Handbooks are a combination of authoritative exposition, comprehensive survey, and fundamental research exploring the underlying themes in the various areas. Some mathematical background is assumed, and much of the material will be of interest to logicians and mathematicians. Volume 5 focuses particularly on logic programming. The chapters, which in many cases are of monograph length and scope, emphasize possible unifying themes.
