A practical guide to addressing reading problems in children.......2003-02-11
I have found this book to be an extremely useful guide to teaching children to read. I have read numerous books on this subject and cannot recommend this book highly enough. I am helping a number of children with their reading at my child's school and have found the step-by-step suggestions in this book to be practical and thorough for all the children I work with.
This book is written in a positive manner, which is important for parents of children with reading problems. It helps them to understand the potential causes of reading problems, how to determine why a particular child is having problems and how to use different techniques to address those problems, while at the same time helping them to understand that many problems have nothing to do with intelligence. Lastly, this book provides sufficient detail that an adult can easily implement the techniques described.
A good book.......2001-01-09
This was a reel help for me and my kids. I am pleesd to read that its not in the jeans and its not my falt there readings not so good.

Book Description
This book is a rare and important gift. One of the few memoirs of combat in World War II by a distinguished African-American flier, it is also perhaps the only account of the African-American experience in a German prison camp.Alexander Jefferson was one of 32 Tuskegee Airmen from the 332nd Fighter Group to be shot down defending a country that considered them to be second-class citizens. A Detroit native, Jefferson enlisted in 1942, trained at Tuskegee Institute, Alabama, became a second lieutenant in 1943, and joined one of the mostdecorated fighting units in the War, flying P51s with their legendaryÂand feared ÂÂred tails.ÂBased in Italy, Jefferson flew bomber escort missions over southern Europe before being shot down in France in 1944. Captured, he spent the balance of the war in Luftwaffe prison camps in Sagan and Moosberg, Germany. In this vividly detailed, deeply personal book, Jefferson writes as a genuine American hero and patriot. ItÂ's an unvarnished look at life behind barbed wire and what it meant to be an African-American pilot in enemy hands. ItÂ's also a look at race and democracy in America through the eyes of a patriot who fought toprotect the promise of freedom. The book features the sketches, drawings, and other illustrations Jefferson created during his nine months as a Âkriegie (POW) and Lewis CarlsonÂ's authoritative background to the man, his unit, and the fight Alexander Jefferson fought so well.

Thank You Alexander Jefferson.......2005-10-29
Among the many groups to whom we owe more than we can ever repay there is the Tuskegee Airmen. Determined to become Army Air Crop pilots and to fight for America, these men enlisted in the army. In spite of the determination of some to make them fail, they didn't. In spite of a 'quota' as to how many would be allowed to graduate (not discovered until many years later) some 900 made it through the system. Most became fighter pilots, after all if they flew bombers they might have had white crewmen under them and in those days that just wouldn't do.
Lt. Jefferson made it through. And eventually he flew with the famous 332nd, the Red Tails. Most of the missions of the 332nd were to escort bombers. NO Bombers were ever lost to Enemy Aircraft while being escorted by the 332nd.
On his 19th mission Lt. Jefferson was shot down by anti-aircraft fire. He spent the next nine months in a German POW camp. When finally returned to the United States after being liberated he walked off the ship to be told, "Whites to the right, niggers to the left."
Thank you Alexander Jefferson for all that you did, including writing this book.

Customer Reviews:
An invaluable resource.......2007-10-11
This book was a perfect guide for me when I needed it most. Being diagnosed with a brain tumor has got to be one of the most daunting things a human can be faced with. On top of the shock, you'll quickly realize that the medical community can be a frustrating and inefficient entity to deal with while you're trying to make the most important decisions of your life. This book tells you how to take the bull by the horns and navigate through the murky waters of bureaucratic red tape. I followed the book's advice on keeping a folder with all my medical records and I took it to every appointment. While I was laying on a gurney waiting for an angiogram, a potentially dangerous procedure, I asked why it was taking so long to get started. The doctor said the hospital had misplaced my MRIs. I said that I had a copy on CD in my bag (something Dr. Zeltzer says everyone should do). His eyes popped open wide and he actually used my CD for the procedure. The nurse later told me that no one had ever done that. The book put me in control at a time when decisions like choosing the right doctors were literally a mater of life or death. My benign tumor has been removed for two and a half years and my life is very normal. I will never forget what this book meant to me.
A book of hope.......2006-09-04
This is volume 1 of a two-volume set. Buy them both. Just like the second volume, it is an essential "navigation" guide for patients with one of the deadliest cancers. The book is logically organized, gives all the necessary information and almost nothing is missing. I am brain cancer patient and I recommend this book. This book and a book by Ben Williams, Surviving "Terminal" Cancer should be on the bookshelf of every GBM patient. This book gave me hope and the strength to endure. Mine arrived with Dr. Zeltzer's dedication, "Knowledge is power". How true!
Brain Tumors - a complex diagnoses made simple.......2006-05-06
This is a good book for anyone who needs to understand the complexity and diagnosis of a brain tumor. It will give you the facts to help you or a family member make intelligent decisions when faced with this medical diagnosis. My identical twin brother was diagnosed with a rapid growing tumor that was affecting his vision. We are both software engineers not doctors. We need facts with absolutes. Not probabilities. He was admitted to the University of New Mexico Hospital, Department of Neurosurgery. His wife and 1 year old daughter were at his side waiting for the operation. I found this book at the medical school bookstore. I thumbed through it and could not put it down. The book carefully explained in detail exactly what the medical staff was saying. It was not a solution for the emotions we were going through but at least I understood the complexity of the brain and impact of tumors. He had two major operations, including a craniotomy. Thankfully, he pulled through. That was a year ago. He will be on medicine from the tumor operation for the rest of his life. But he is alive. There are other books I might suggest for the emotional impact on a family, but this review is just for the understanding of the medical diagnosis. If you or a family member has been diagnosed with a brain tumor I suggest this book.
Absolutely essential.......2005-08-14
If you or a loved one are newly diagnosed with a brain tumor, this is the book you must read immediately and use as a reference throughout the process of dealing with the disease. I wish that it had been available when our daughter was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme early last year. With a disease of this complexity, you and your family will ultimately be responsible for coordinating treatment options, anticipating and managing side effects of medications, etc. To be an effective advocate you need to learn as much as you can as quickly as you can, and this book is the place to start. The medical care that our daughter has received has been uniformly excellent, but a vigilent and informed caregiving team is a vital component in managing her disease.
"Surviving Terminal Cancer" by Ben Williams is also excellent -- both books are required reading.
The quality of the information available and the dedication of the people who provide it is truly amazing. Dr Musella's website, www.virtualtrials.com, is another essential resource, particularly for information about the many new developments in brain tumor research and treatment. I believe that there is much reason for optimism, and that an empowered and informed community will play an important role in conquering this terrible disease.
A must-read for anyone dealing with a brain tumor.......2004-12-22
This book helps guide you through the turmoil that comes with the diagnosis of a brain tumor. Unlike most diseases where you go to your doctor and let him / her make all of the decisions, dealing with a brain tumor is very different. You will be dealing with up to 20 different types of health professionals. You will be given choices that your doctor doesn't even want to make for you. Decisions that you make can greatly affect your chances of being a long term survivor.
You need all of the help you can get.
This book was written by one of the best neuro-oncologists in the world, drawing not only on his professional experiences dealing with his own patients at some of the most prestigious brain tumor centers in the USA, but also on his many years of participating in online support groups and answering questions from my website, Clinical Trials And Noteworthy Treatments For Brain Tumors.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting idea, shallow execution.......2001-05-02
Apart from Chamberlin's elegant prose, this book left me enormously unsatisfied. The idea is very interesting, but the characters are drawn so superficially that it is very difficult to even empathize with them. The characters' motivations are not well illuminated at all, and tend to make them seem like caricatures rather than full-fledged people. All in all, this reading experience was pretty uncompelling.
A unique perspective on the Creationist theory.......2001-03-22
I could not put this book down as it was an engrossing read narrated by Adam's daughter, Na'amah, by his first wife Lilith. It weaves in ancient folklore with whispers of Lilith, the Mother Goddess of all the earth. And Na'amah tells the story softly to enchant the readers into listening to what may have happened in the Garden of Eden. It weaves together the creationist and evolution theories together.
I must be brutally honest here ~~ I did not care for Adam and Eve in this story. I walked away with the impression that those two are incredibly selfish and bent on having their own way of doing life. In the hunter-gatherer age, the clan was very vital for survival. No one could survive outside of the clan. Adam came up with a new vision to create a new beginning of the way life should be ~~ a farmer rooted in one spot. It's a great vision ~~ for it led the way to our lifestyles today ~~ but to accomplish that, he had to deny the daughter he had. Na'amah wanted nothing more than to haver her father to love her ~~ which he was never able to do, especially after he set eyes on Eve. He wasn't allowed to marry Eve because of the tradition that a man should never remarry while the offspring of his first wife was still alive. He literally had to resort to murder to accomplish his dream of marrying Eve.
It is an awesome feat of changing the way a clan shall live from then on ~~ that is how things evolve over time. Adam can be credited with having the foresight of changing the future ~~ but he can also be credited with destroying a beautiful way of life and for destroying the garden. Eve in this book is nothing more than an immature child with eyes only for Adam. She was the temptress ~~ but so immature!
I could go on and on with discussing this book but I better not ~~ so you can read the book yourself. I highly recommend this book, especially if you like "The Red Tent" by Anita Diamant (I think that's her last name!). "Leaving Eden" is a book that leaves you feeling that your vision of Eden is slightly altered ~~ it is a what if book ~~ what if Adam hadn't met Eve, what if Eve was a different woman, and what if the ruler of the universe is a woman. It just gives you a different perspective of how things could have been. It is a book that requires a lot of imagination ~~ just listen to Na'amah tell the story and listen carefully. It'll be worth your journey.
Liliths Own13@aol.com.......2000-11-17
Ann Chamberlin did a wonderous job on the book, her poetic discriptions made the book not only a master piece but it made it come alive. With the facts of Lilith (adams first wife) and a fictional outlook on a the times taken place. I do say that this book is not ment for children under 17 for the material that it does cover throughout the book. Another thing that Ann Chamberlin did to make this book great was putting the book not in the eyes of Lilith or in a third person view but in the view of Liliths daugther (Na'amah). Ann Chamberlin Discribes Na'amah as being abandoned and left to take care of Adam (her father), which in this case brings fact and fiction to the story. With this event Ann Chamberlin puts a sublime twist to the book.
Storytelling at its best!.......2000-06-13
Leaving Eden is a fresh and elegant retelling of the myth of Lilith, Adam and Eve. The best feature is the ambivalent voice of the narrator, Na'amah--Adam's daughter by Lilith--whose observations on old dogmas and women's knowledge provide--what I would call--ecofeminist insights and questioning. All this is secondary to a great story well told. This book is a fascinating invitation to tell more stories about origins! If God were a woman, how might we narrate stories of "the fall"?
A very different take on the ADAM AND EVE saga.......1999-06-11
Adam knows the law periodically enforced by the Mother Goddess, Lilith that man must never take a second wife as long as the children of his first spouse live. However, for fifteen years, the clan members discuss Adam's loneliness and need for a helpmate. In many respects, Adam blames his daughter Na'amah, begat from his union with Lilith, for his forlorn situation. If she was never born, he could find a new mate to replace his first wife the Mother Goddess.
With Lilith absent for over a decade and a half, Adam heeds the words of a new God. He is encouraged to mate with Eve, a former member of a different clan. The female members of his own clan recognize the new relationship and begin to whisper "Adam and Eve". However, everyone fears the wrath of Lilith, who will know that Adam has violated the law and slept with Eve. Her punishment for defying one of her prime directives could be death or banishment from Eden forever.
LEAVING EDEN is an incredible pre-historic fiction work that retells the story of Adam and Eve. The fast-paced story line leaves readers enthralled with the characters and Ann Chamberlin's ability to tell an exciting tale. Told in the third person by Na'amah, Adam is described as arrogant, loving, yet filled with resentment. Eve is a friend and a rival. Anyone who takes pleasure from the great biblical love story rewritten based on modern historiography's approach to prehistory will want to peruse Ms. Chamberlin's latest masterpiece.

Having been relocated to London by their parents, Judith and her cancer-stricken younger brother, Gabriel, find themselves living in an ancient schoolhouse so their parents can research and microfilm the school's historical records. While his mother and father are preoccupied down in the archives, Gabriel remains upstairs, wasting away. Judith begins to worry that their family ties are wasting away, too.
An old silver heart-shaped pendant and visits from a ghostly apparition of a young boy seem to hold the key to her family's past, and future.
As Judith learns more about her ancestors and the history of the heart pendant, she is able to see her parents with greater compassion. She is tempted to give up on them, but begins to realize that what her family needs, more than anything, is each other.

Refreshingly honest and comforting.......2005-05-16
From start to finish, "Leaving Eden" is a remarkably well-written and free-flowing novel, replete with smooth transitional dialogue and fantastic character development. The author, Amber Esplin, vividly illuminates the struggles and journeys of individuals in their quest to meaningfully communicate and forge lasting relationships with family members and loved ones. By humbling themselves and accepting Christ's atonement, they come to know that the worth of souls is great. The author also skillfully introduces the reader to an unnamed boy, who figures prominently throughout the novel. This unique concept of an unnamed major character fits perfectly into the storyline. In order to convey ideas of such depth and substance, Amber Esplin, in addition to her immense talent as a writer, is obviously an extremely sensitive and caring woman as well.
The author delicately balances the range of emotions experienced by readers learning about the Casey family and their ancestors. The great welding link, the Disciples of Christ Schoole for Boys and Girles, is the setting for most of the story. Amber Esplin's keen sense of subtle humor allows the reader to laugh often; just as important, her wit is never at the expense of others. At other times, the reader is subdued as he or she relates to the trials, challenges, and shortcomings of the characters in the novel.
In a beautiful and natural way, Amber Esplin gracefully weaves together several stories of faith and works, as Caseys past and present hope and pray that the hearts of children and parents will seek, find, and strengthen one another in love. "Leaving Eden" has further motivated me to cherish the relationships I have with family and friends, and instilled in me a gratitude for the encouragement and other spiritual gifts they so freely share.
Thank you, Amber, for writing such a wonderful book!

Book Description
“The promise of beauty—the kind of real, personal beauty that can transform a person’s life—arrived in Eden, Virginia, on the fourth Thursday in June.” That’s the day Tallie Brock sees the sign at the Klip-N-Kurl, the beauty parlor where she works part-time, sweeping the floor and refilling shampoo bottles, among other chores. (What she really enjoys is listening to the women chat, gossip, and buzz like a beehive.) The sign in the front window announces GLAMOUR DAY. For twenty dollars, a woman can receive a complete professional makeover—and a glossy nine-by-twelve-inch picture of the result.
For Tallie, the glam shot just may be her ticket out of Lovettsville. She dreams of someday going to Hollywood and becoming a Star. Her mother, who was the spitting image of Natalie Wood, used to say “the sky’s the limit.” In fact, her mother once left home to make a movie in Los Angeles. But she returned six months later without whispering a word about it—and tried to pick up her life right where she left off. Tallie noticed something different, though. And her mother’s best friend, Martha Lee, the plainest woman within miles, knew the secret that soon the whole town would discover. At the time, Tallie was just afraid her mother would get antsy and disappear again. She was only half right.
But that was four years ago, and now Glamour Day is fast approaching. While jotting down observations in her Rulebook for Living (such as “Women with fat faces shouldn’t wear bangs” and “Beetles signify change”), Tallie finds herself changing in unexpected ways—as she tests the limits of trust, explores her growing attraction to a boy from a family as rich as her imagination, and reaches for the sky like she has never done before.
By turns funny and tender, joyous and poignant, bestselling author Anne LeClaire has written a winning, stylish novel of small-town Southern life— and what it means to be a mother, daughter, best friend, wife, and lover.
Customer Reviews:
A good beach read........2006-03-19
This is a good beach read for a hot summer afternoon. It is about a young girl, who thinks the grass is greener on the other side. I am assuming she got this opinion of her mother. I had the impression that her mother moved away the second time, but it isn't really that way. It was heartbreaking and moving to read about how much she misses her mother. Makes you think you don't really know how much you would missing something until it is gone.
So Tallie lives with her dad, who works and drowns his sorrows in a nearby bar. She goes to school and also works at the local beauty salon. After her mother comes back the first time from LA, she is filled with all kinds of emotions. She doesn't know whether to be mad, sad or happy. She is lacking a female her in life after her mother passes, but her mom's best friend is there.
I didn't expect the story to turn out like it did. I love it!
My new favorite author!.......2004-12-13
I read LEAVING EDEN first and was so thrilled with the book and the author's style that I immediately ordered everything she has written. Her mysteries (SIDESHOW and GRACE POINT are wonderfully structured, as well.) I'm now reading THE LAW OF BOUND HEARTS and will be sad when I run out of books! I look forward to many years of enjoyment and I've recommended her to all my friends.
Best wishes always.

Trite and Mediocre.......2004-06-30
Many aspects of this book didn't work for me. First, the faux folksy, Southern-fried dialogue. It was as if the author tried to used this cornpone-inflected dialogue to give life to her rather boring, cliched characters. The timeline was confusing, and for the first half of the book I was never sure how much time had passed, how old Tallie was, etc. The author kept jumping around incoherently. The bit about Sarah was just dropped in, with no buildup or seeming connection to the rest of the story. Of course, that segment did lead the the book's denouement but it seemed artifical and jarring. It didn't flow organically from the rest of the story. Other things didn't make sense. When did the story take place? Given some comments about movie stars and musicians one could guess that it could be anytime in the last 15 years. But the characters acted as if it was the 1950's in many ways. I know small Southern towns are traditional (I grew up in one) but this was ridiculous. For instance, why didn't Tallie's mother ever have a job? Apparently they were barely getting by on her dad's millworker salary. You'd think that Dinah Mae would have done something to contribute to keeping the family afloat. And that brings us to the character of Dinah Mae herself. I agree with the shrink Tallie saw briefly, that she idealized her mother. Of course that angered Tallie and she flounced out. Dinah Mae was a pretty, fun-loving woman who was also vain, selfish, self-involved, irresponsible and at best an indifferent wife and mother, and one who never did or accomplished anything. I had no sympathy for her at any point and found it odd that all the main characters seemed so besotted with her, even when she treated them very badly. None of the characters were deeply drawn, and their motivations were often unclear. In sum, I thought this was a poorly written book. The basic storyline, if cleaned up quite a bit and fleshed out, might make a moderately enjoyable Lifetime movie. As fiction, it's sorely lacking.
wise, compassionate and evocative "Eden" celebrates hope.......2003-07-19
What does it mean to make wise choices in life? How is it possible for a sensitive teen-ager to comprehend the significance of a mother's love when its source is no longer present? How much should one risk for dreams, desires and hopes? What is it about wanting that makes it so consuming, so overpowering? Anne LeClaire's sensitive, lyrical and evocative coming-of-age novel, "Leaving Eden," provides stunning, instructive answers. Her protagonist, sixteen year-old Tallie Brock does not consider her hometown of suggestively-named Eden, Virginia to be paradise; nor does she realize that the knowledge she so earnestly seeks about life could compel her to an act of self-banishment.
What Talie does know is heartbreak and abandonment. Not once, but twice, does her mother leave her. Blessed with Natalie Wood-like looks, Dinah Mae Brock wrestles with her own need to live out her dreams. After Dinah Mae abruptly leaves her diligent, devoted husband Luddy for the hopes of realizing her life-long ambition of becoming a Hollywood stgar, her bright, inquisitive but disaffected daughter must confront her own demons and ask herself questions she is not initially prepared to confront.
Without the comfort and security of her mother, Tallie lacks "context" for her life and yearns to see the "whole picture" instead of the "jangly bits and pieces that didn't seem to fit." Insecure with her own physical appearance, a social outsider whose anxieties are exacerbated by an intolerably smug and critical maternal grandmother, Tallie has yet to discover that "things don't always have to be laid out straight as string to make sense." Trying to make sense of his own loneliness, Luddy takes to drink to obliterate pain. One parent dead, the other remote and silent, Tallie seeks answers through involvement in the Klip-N-Kurl beauty salon, where the town's women congregate to share gossip, secrets, and occasional comfort.
Just as quickly as she had left Eden, Dinah Mae returns, but with even more unanswered questions. The novel pivots around the issue of unresolved dreams and wants. Both mother and daughter must face how to fulfill the lives they have been given while being true to themselves and the one they love. In desperation, Tallie turns to the town's pariah "witch," whose Queen of Cures causes more consternation to Tallie than comfort. Tallie muses, "It's hard to figure out what will kill you and what will cure you" and even more difficuilt to figure out the difference, she unknowingly sets an outline for her own life.
The second abandonment is even more wrenching, more final as Tallie must observe her mother's unsuccessful battle with cancer. LeClaire is nothing less than brilliant in her exploration of an adolescent's existential anguish and resounding pain at the loss of a beloved parent. Tallie yearns to have her mother tell her "everything" she needs to know about life. As she rails at the unfairness of her mother's death, Tallie also castigates herself for her own inability to ask the right questions, provide enough solace and deflect physical pain.
As Tallie discovers "wanting is a powerful thing," she embarks on a bumpy road of self-discovery in which her sexuality, capacity for truth and ability to deceive combine to compel her to an act of self-defintion and discovery. She learns that dreams, "the conceiving of possibilities that stretch" beyond the single person, necessarily must animate life; the act of want transcends its attainment. Tallie ultimately will come to grips with one of life's greatest dilemmas, a choice between regret and remorse.
Interspersed in this fast-paced narrative are bite-sized morsels of Tallie's wisdom, written in her private journal. Each aphorism derives from experience and love, from the intricate web of friendships Tallie has created in Eden and from the solitude of suffering and desire in her own heart. Anne LeClaire has created a genuinely moving description of wisdom's costs and love's possibilities. "Leaving Eden" will leave readers profoundly moved.

Leaving Eden by Anne D. LeClaire
In this warm hearted coming of age story, twelve year old Tallie Brooks is missing her mother one summer. Though her mother has gone away before, in Tallie's heart, she knows it will be a long time this time before her mother's return, if at all. Her father works long hours at the mill, leaving Tallie alone in the house most days, and even for longer periods of time of times when he stops at CC's Bar after work, which is most evenings. Tallie works at the Klip `N Kurl, with a boss who claims she can "read" soap bubbles like others read tea leave. Tallie sweeps the floors, folds the towels and helps in general. Tallie amuses herself by keeping a book of all the things she has learned at the Klip `N Kurl, small lessons she savors that become bites of wisdom for us readers. Since Tallie's boss hosts "Glamour Day" one day, Tallie dreams the same dream her own mother die - to become a movie star, and this one "Glamour Day will be her big chance. When Tallie chases her own dream, she learns that it is in her very own little book that her dream has waited all along. A must read.

Book Description
In the small town of Eden, Virginia, 16-year-old Tallie is sweeping up cut hair at the Klip 'N' Kurl, plotting ways to get the attention of the local heart throb, taking care of her daddy, and considering how things might have been different if her mother, Dinah Mae, hadn't died four years before. Focused on the secrets, dreams and love that bind a mother and a daughter even after death, the novel alternates between the summer of 1992, when the Glamour Company comes to Eden, seducing the townswomen with the promise of beauty and transformation, and the summer of 1988 when Dinah Mae is dying, and Tallie must search for the clues to family secrets and a cure that will save her mother. This novel is about the power of love and forgiveness to mend hearts shattered by death and broken dreams. Readers of Anne LeClaire's previous novel, ENTERING NORMAL, will recognise the depth of characterisation and perceptiveness that she brings to all her writing.
