The secret to surviving parenthood? It's laughter, according to author Sandi Kahn Shelton. In this delightful book, Shelton, who's also the humor columnist for Working Mother magazine, dishes up hilarious insights into the inner workings of infants and toddlers that only a mother of three could provide. From sleep deprivation to sleeping with toasters, choosing child-care, and waiting for poop, Shelton touches on all the hottest topics of the first three years of parenthood. Organized by subject, instead of in chronological order, you'll find witty and wonderful stories in chapters such as "Why Babies Cry," "The Daddy Dance," "You Can Leave Home Without Them," "Parenting in Public," and "Life in the Terrible Twos." Shelton at one moment bombards us with such pure silliness as "Spaghetti goes on the head; that's why it's made in strands," and then, at the next opportunity, turns on the compassion with "you're most likely going to live through this time in your life. Especially if you can laugh. In fact, definitely if you can laugh." With such wit and wisdom, Shelton will help you see the lighter side of parenthood--and, hopefully, help you enjoy it even more. --Kelley Smith

Good for a laugh.......2003-04-05
She's really funny, but I didn't appreciate her choice of language in some instances.
Very funny but lacking in propriety.......2003-01-01
Shelton is hilarious. Working Mother magazine says she is "the true successor to Erma Bombeck's throne." Sorry, I cannot agree; Erma never cussed. I don't mind a little garden-variety cussing here and there, but Shelton really lets loose at times and pulls out the big ones--the offensive ones, that is. She did not end up using the F word, but frankly I don't know what stopped her; everything else was there. She really doesn't need the shock factor to be funny either. She's a riot. She's definitely been in the trenches, but she could take a lesson from Erma the Great. My rating for Shelton would have been a five if she had just cleaned up her act.
Too funny.......2002-10-05
I have a six-month-old and this book has me in stitches. I keep re-reading it because the author has really captured that parenthood is a constant journey of the sublime to the ridiculous.

The Experience of the Western Front.......2007-04-26
"Tommy" is Richard Holmes's exploration of the experience of the British soldier and the British Army on the Western Front of the Great War, 1914-1918. Through a narrative rich in detail and anecdote, Holmes provides context and some necessary correction on the life of Tommy Atkins, prototypical British soldier, at war.
Holmes, an experienced historian, has provided a study very much in the vein of "Redcoat", his earlier work on the British Army from Waterloo to the Crimean War. In this book, Holmes details how the small standing British professional army of 1914 became the mass army of 1918 and how it generally acquitted itself fairly well in four years of horrendous combat with the elements, its own bureaucracy, and the German Army. It is a story of the men who became soldiers, their weapons, their leadership, their food, medical care, and their sense of the fighting. Holmes includes a fascinating collection of photographs of the Western Front.
Holmes has done his extensive research. The traditional regimental system comes in for some considerable praise for its contribution to unit cohesion and morale. The willingness of the Army to adapt to the demands of mass warfare, on a scale not practiced by Britain in over one hundred years, is commendable if often uneven. The leadership of the Army, especially after the first year of war, generally did as good a job as the circumstances of combat allowed. The fate of mounted cavalry and the introduction of modern warfighting technology such as tanks, airplanes, radios, and indirect artillery fire are discussed. Above all, the stubborn and patient devotion to duty of Tommy and his fellow soldiers shines through.
At roughly 700 pages, this is an exhaustive if not exhausting study that will appeal the most to those with a keen interest in the First World War, especially to those looking for the story behind the battle histories. It is highly recommended as a reading experience to students of the history of the British Army.
A book to be savored.......2006-02-12
This is a must-read for anyone interested in the Great War, the Western Front, or the history of the British soldier. In his wonderful narrative style, Holmes weaves numerous first-hand accounts into a smoothly flowing story that never becomes ponderous despite the enormous size of the book. Highly recommended.
Comprehensive description of life in WWI British army.......2005-08-11
Richard Holmes, the author, provides a fascinating, masterful portrait of British soldiers' everyday lives during WWI. This book is about the British army itself; it is NOT a campaign history, a strategy essay, or a biography.
Despite the plethora of books produced about Britain's WWI effort, Holmes manages to include a great volume of hitherto negelected information. Some of these topics include: commissioning, pay, ranking differences (permanent, temporary, brevet), compulsory requisitioning of horses, medical treatment, replacements, promotions, religion, liberty, leave, discipline/punishment, mustache regulations, combat training, demobilisation, and return to civilian life.
Thankfully, he also explains the highly complex war-time formation, structure, varying roles, and evolution of battalions, regiments, brigades, divisions, corps, and armies. Holmes also defines the differences between formation types (regular, Special Reserve, territorial, and New Army). In addition, he also relates the jobs of various staff and admin unit members (e.g. Chief of Staff, Adjutant, Regimental Sergeant Major, etc.).
Besides all the above, the book includes the more commonly discussed trench life routine, weapons, personal accounts, a typical attack, morale, and the army's various branches (infantry, artillery, sappers, cavalry, tanks, machine guns, supply, general staff, etc.). The author unusually presents a few striking, small-scale examples of successful cavalry charges and a costly episode of firing guns by direct sight.
This is an excellent, well-researched book that is a pleasure to read. Bravo!
Written with compassion and detachment- history brought to life.......2005-07-06
Richard Holmes does a TV series in the UK called War Walks.
In the series he basically walks through a battlefield pointing out where a particular action took place, where a dug out or ridge was and then turns to camera and deliver a short, precise monologue.
He dresses smartly, invariably wearing a tie or cravat; with a neat trimmed grey moustache and fixes the camera from behind silver framed glasses. When he speaks to the camera his voice carries a gravitas and intensity that conveys respect and concern with cold hard truths. He has the same persona on the page and this is what drives Tommy forward
Holmes is like a kindly uncle who knows every minute detail on his subject and will tell you everything you need to know, in a slow studied manner. Despite his slow, at times ponderous style, or perhaps precisely because of it, he ignites your interest and takes you through the story, even when it gets a little complicated and dull, regimental names and badges for instance.
And like a good story, told by a kindly uncle, it stays in your head, the characters vibrant and their lives and deaths meaningful and justice done to them.
Boring.......2004-09-13
Another revisionist tract that seeks to glorify the British Tommy though spinning defeats into victories, bumblers into geniuses, and incompetence into acumen. Overly long, redundant and without a single unifying theme, this book is more demanding on your patience than critical faculty.
Book Description
The First World War as a living history is to all intents and purposes over. As of today February 2005, there are only twelve veterans from six million alive who served on the Western Front. Richard has spent the last 20 years interviewing and carefully recording the memories of over 270 veterans and this book is a culmination of his 20 years of work.
The book will be an extraordinary collection of stories told by the veterans themselves but also through the author's memories of them: the remarkable, the sad, the funny, the moving. It will also feature an outstanding collection of photographs taken of the veterans as they were, as soldiers during the war together with recent images of almost all of these men, taken at home, back on the Western Front, at the final veterans' reunion, and at various investitures.
Britain's Last Tommies will also offer a unique list of veterans, all of who individually hold the poignant title of being the last Gallipoli veteran, the last Royal Flying Corps veteran, the last Distinguished Conduct Medal holder, the last cavalryman, the last Prisoner of War.

The things these men suffered.......2007-09-18
Wow. What an eye-opener this book is. The true stories of the killing fields of WWI, and the officers and the soldiers who fought, straight from the veterans' mouths. These men went through hell on earth and lived to tell the tale. This is an in-depth look at the horror of that war, all the more powerful because it's told with such restraint by the very men who fought, and by respectfully sympathetic author. Highly recommended.
Customer Reviews:
great illustrations but an unneccessary bias.......2004-05-30
I bought the book to learn how Jewish culture began and understand the past of Palestine (or now called Israel), but I was greatly disappointed to read biased information such as "There is hardly another people on earth who can trace a continuous history that covers 4000 years. It can be argued that Chinese civilization is just as old, but the Chinese have always been geographically remote."
What the hell? Did the author forget that right next to the region he wrote about was Persian Empire which has a 5000 year history? And the Chinese have always been geographically remote? Compared to whom??? And by the way, they've been around quite a bit longer than 4000 years.
The author also tries to sneak in that Egypt was founded by Jewish ancestors...even though there is no other righting of this in history.
Maybe the author should have just stuck to his great illustrations instead of trying to beef up history with an agenda. I was looking forward to learning from the book but I couldn't trust anything else in it after reading those misrepresentations.
Great book by Gilbert, excellent maps.......1998-12-18
This book is similar to The Atlas of Jewish History; Martin Gilbert. I love maps. This is the first time I see antient maps in one place. This book adds colour and text to the original Atlas. I would recommend this one for non-historians (I gave one to my 12-year old son), the Atlas is for a more serious reader.
In any case, both atlases are very informative and pleasure to have.

Nanotechnology: A Gentle Introduction to the Next Big Idea.......2007-01-13
Good book for begginers. It starts simple and build you up. Not too many hard conecpts.
Medical: Quantam Dots, Colloids, Cantilevers, Dendrimers, Nanoshells.......2006-12-06
Quantum Dots contain only a few hundred atoms. Because the electrons in a quantum dot are confined to widely separated energy levels, the dot emits only one wavelength of light when excited. The size of the dot determines its electronic, magnetic, and optical properties. Quantum Dot Corporation has developed a QD cadmium selenide nanoparticle for use as biological labels. Researchers can tag proteins and nucleic acids with QD and illuminate them with ultraviolet light and the crystal will fluoresce at a specific wavelength and show the location of attached proteins. How does a QD work? An organic dye molecule absorbs only photons of light with just the right energy to lift its electrons from their quiescent state to one of the higher levels available to them. The incident light must be exactly the right wavelength or color. The molecule will emit a photon when the electron falls to a lower energy level.
Colloids: nanoparticles in suspension. IBM is exploring using colloids to build ultrahigh density data storage. IBM is using colloids containing magnetic nanoparticles 3 nm across, each composing of about 1,000 iron and platinum atoms. The colloid is spread on a surface and the solvent allowed to evaporate and these nanoparticles crytalize into 2 or 3 dimensional arrays. These arrays could hold trillions of bits per square inch.
Cantilevers: IBM is exploring using atomic force microscopes to screen samples for certain genetic sequences. They attach short strands of DNA to the tops of cantilevers. When genetic material carrying a complementary sequence binds to the anchored strands, it induces a surface stress, which bends the cantilevers subtly, by use nanometers, but enough for detection.
Dendrimers: An dendrimer is an artifical molecule. Dendrimers are globular molecules about the size of a typical protein, but they do not come apart or unfold because they are held together with stronger chemical bonds. Dendrimers can be engineered to transport DNA into cells for gene therapy. Dendrimers offer control. It may be possible to design dendrimers that spontaneously swell and liberate their contents oly when the appropriate trigger molecules are present. This ability would allow a custom-made dendrimer to release its load of drugs I just the tissues or organs needing treatment.
Nanoshells: Nanoshells are extremely small beads of glass coated with gold. Nanoshells capture energy in near-infrared fashion. Such a nanoshell could be made to deliver drug molecules at specific times by attaching it to a capsule made of heat-sensitive polymer. The capsule would release its contents only when gentle heating of the attached nonshell caused it to deform. Another more dramatic application envisions connecting nanoshells with antibodies. The antibodies attach to the tumor cells and the nanoshells are heated using high power infrared sufficiently to destroy the cancer cells, while leaving nearby tissue unharmed.
Great Job.......2006-06-05
The book promised an intro to nanotechnology and that's what it delivered. A fairly nontechnical, but graphic representation of a new science. If someone wants a thourough education buy a textbook. If you want an intro into one of the most promising new fields without a 400 page manual, this is a good place to start. The previous reviewer is a moron. Read the cover before you buy it.
Next Big Idea.......2006-05-05
Great job organizing such sciency material in easy, yet educational format! Some of the best in the field recommended this read. The author's analogies and content are accurate. This book gives the reader a toolset of knowledge to expand on. Regardless of ones background, this technology is worth knowing about. With a background as a manufacturing engineer, I don't fit into the traditional chemistry and biology scene. I look at this area and see untraditional manufacturing processes that people need to know about. When these processes come out of research, and into the manufacturing sector there are going to be serious manufacturing challenges. This book has helped me solidify my interest within this field.
Hot Author Review.......2006-03-15
Dan Ratner: A man with brains and one hot body! He's got it all! I have had the pleasure of meeting this young and "yummy" hunk after the release of his book. I must say, his photo in the book doesn't do him justice. Ladies, you really have to see this hunk in person! If you are ever in the Chicago area, I would seriously advise you to go.
You can tell he works out by his incredible bulging muscles. Oh, yeah! What a physique! Is this guy for real or just a fantasy? Gotta wipe that drool off your lips, Ladies. *smack* Oh, I'd love to feel those arms for myself. His body, from what I could see, gets an "A" rating here!!
His personality rating is an "A" rating as well. He is so well mannered and is a pleasure to converse with. Quite refreshing to meet such a man. I would certainly love a date with this fine young author over a nice old fashion candle-lit dinner. His mannerism is a definite "A+" rating here!
Unfortunately, my meeting with Mr. Dan Ratner was not long enough to give an extensive review, although, I hope our next meet will be.
Anyway, if you like brains and brawn, I'd definitely recommend this author!
Book Description
The biography of George Westinghouse is rich in drama and in breadth, a story of power, city building, and applying the Golden Rule in business. His story intersects with those of many great personalities of the Gilded Age such as J.P Morgan, Henry Clay Frick, Andrew Carnegie, the Mellon Family, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and Nikola Tesla. One of the most successful industrialists in America, George Westinghouse was a wizard who took a much different approach than Thomas Edison. Westinghouse became a manager of innovation. He was not only an inventor in his own right, but the orchestra leader of a symphony of ideas. Westinghouse developed the corporate model of invention and research. Samuel Gompers said that "if industry had been run by men like Westinghouse, there would have been no need for unions." His innovations allowed Westinghouse to take the lead in electrical distribution. While it was Edison who first electrified New York City, the nation turned in favor of the AC current system of Westinghouse. His natural gas distribution system did more than Carnegie's capital to make Pittsburgh the Steel City. The panic of 1907 changed Westinghouse. It took the energy out of the industrial lion and resulted in a personal depression, which led to his death in 1914. A pioneer in pension plans and in planned communities for workers, Westinghouse was mourned by his employees, who collected money for a memorial to him in 1955. This testament to his life would have been the one he cherished the most. *** Quentin R. Skrabec, Jr. is a Pittsburgher with a strong background in the local stories and legends. He has published over fifty articles on history, industrial history and business, and five books on business, industry and management. He was awarded the first USA Today/Rochester National Quality Cup. Holding a PhD in Manufacturing Management from the University of Toledo, Dr. Skrabec has taught as an adjunct professor at Toledo, the University of Akron, University of Pittsburgh, and Robert Morris University. Presently he is an associate professor of business, teaching courses in operations management at Findlay University. In his management career, Dr. Skrabec has served as a manager and vice president at LSE/LTV Steel, Jessop, and National Steel. He led LSE/LTV to 33 Magazine's "manufacturing company of the year" and to Tom Peters' "100 Best-Managed Companies" list.

Book Description
In 1932, the author Harold Salut responded to the irrestible call of the beauty and exitement of flight by joining the Nord Air Flying Circus. He became one of the aerial vagabonds called 'barnstormers' who flew contraptions called aeroplanes made of sticks and wires covered with cotton cloth. Becoming a member of the Flying Circus meant Harold entered a world where pilots were seen as leather clad, dusty booted and nameless aviators who were either idolized or called 'damned fools'. Crashes were unavoidable with death sometimes the reality of their tired old airplanes. This book will draw you into a different time and a different life.
