Customer Reviews:
Not comprehensive but still helpful........2006-03-28
Overall, I thought this Fodor's Miami guide was helpful for my trip. It highlights many of the important/interesting sights, restaurants and things to do. However, I was disappointed in their lack of coverage of the public transport (more specifically, bus) system on Miami Beach. When I was there, I took the buses a lot and it would have been helpful if a map of the bus routes were added in the book instead of just saying that Miami public transport isn't good, go rent a car. (I didn't have a driver's license) Also, most of the restaurant recommendations are very generic in the sense that I could have easily pulled out the information from websites such as Citysearch. It totally misses out on the smaller, unique and delicious eateries around town (even on Miami Beach). However, the book is still helpful in my overall trip planning though it could have been better.
This book MADE our trip to Miami!.......2004-11-09
This is such a helpful book! We used it for everything from looking for places for brunch, to the nightlife of South Beach, to finding out why there is 15% gratuity added to every restaurant tab in this area! Any question we had about Miami and the customs there was answered! I highly recommend this book - it was like a portable concierge that we took with us everywhere we went!!! : )

Wonderful portrayal of colorful adventuring fellowships.......2000-06-09
Here's a beautiful supplement for the Forgotten Realms - this sourcebook details the famous (and infamous!) mercenaries and heroic fellowships of the world. There are chapters on history, guidance, and maps; most importantly, there are complete details on the fascinating characters themselves; their powers, dreams, motivations, and secrets are all revealed here. A huge, beautiful display of color plates crowns this section. And, as a coup de grace, there are complete BattleSystem statistics in the back, so you can have these proud elite contingents fight in your epic battles! Highly recommended.

Book Description
Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy, was the greatest sea-borne military operation in history. At the heart of the invasion and key to its success were the landings of British 50th Division on Gold Beach and Canadian 3rd Division on Juno Beach. Not only did they provide the vital link between the landings of British 3rd Division on Sword Beach and the Americans to the west on Omaha, they would be crucial to the securing of the beachhead and the drive inland to Bayeux and Caen. In the fourth D-Day volume Ken Ford details the assault that began the liberation of Nazi-occupied Europe.
Customer Reviews:
A Decent Summary.......2002-12-10
This is the second volume in the Osprey Campaign series' detailed examination of the D-Day landings. In this tightly packaged volume, author Ken Ford offers considerable detail on the less well-known British and Canadian landings on Gold and Juno beaches on 6 June 1944. Overall, the volume provides a decent campaign narrative combined with a high graphic quality in terms of maps and photographs. This volume is not quite as good as the first volume in this series, which covered the landing on Sword Beach, and this may cause some readers apprehension as to what to expect from the remaining two volumes on D-Day.
Gold & Juno Beaches begins in standard Osprey format with short sections on the origin of the battle, a campaign chronology, opposing leaders, opposing armies and opposing plans. The author provides five 2-D maps (German defenses on Gold and Juno Beaches, Allied landings on Gold and Juno, and the situation at midnight on D-Day) and three 3-D "Bird's Eye View" maps (the British 69th Brigade landing on Gold, the Canadian 3rd Brigade landing on Juno, and the Battle of Villers-Bocage). The two very detailed maps of the German defenses are particularly useful and interesting. Three battle scenes are included: HMS Ajax bombarding the German defenses, the landing on Gold and the German evacuation of Ardenne Abbey on 8 June). The author provides 28 pages on the Gold landings, 22 pages on Juno and ten pages on the week after the landings. A detailed order of battle for both sides is also provided. The bibliography is overly succinct and includes several out-dated books on the subject while ignoring several more recent and worthwhile books, such as Robert Kershaw's Piercing the Atlantic Wall.
The author displays a bit of a jingoistic tone in this volume, beginning with his suggestion that the Allied units had "sky-high" morale and superb training, whereas the German defenders lacked these attributes. Certainly any comparison of units like the veteran British 50th Division against the third-string German 716th Coastal Infantry Division will find the defenders at a qualitative and quantitative disadvantage. However, Ford glosses over the fact that most German units were liberally sprinkled with combat veterans and only the static units were lower in morale and tactical competence. The panzer, panzer grenadier and mobile infantry in reserve were certainly equal to the British units in tactical competence, and possessed solid, reliable equipment. Furthermore, the author tends to denigrate the performance of the 716th Division on D-Day, yet this weak unit managed to delay five Allied divisions for the bulk of the day and fulfilled its intended role. Ford's description of the collapse of the German "crust" defense around mid-day on D-Day as a rout does not ring true, since if it was a rout why did the British and Canadians fail to reach their D-Day objectives? It was not the failure of the coastal defense units - which were always viewed as expendable - but the failure to promptly deploy mobile reserves that ultimately compromised the German Atlantic Wall.
Ford's discussion of the landings is decent, but there is not much analysis. For example, the British landed very little infantry in the first assault waves and relied on armored engineering vehicles to breach the main obstacle belt, which was the exact opposite of the American methods employed on Omaha and Utah. The British methods were highly successful and kept their losses at an acceptable level. Ford also really only addresses the assault waves and spends little effort discussing the follow-up forces and the development of the beachheads. Nevertheless, readers can easily follow the action using this volume's text and maps.

Hi, I am working at ILISA Spanish Language Institute in San Jose, Costa Rica and I just want to say that this book helps our students a lot by giving them helpful inside information and thus by getting to know all the ins and outs about this fantastic country. Thanks!
User Friendly format but not as thorough.......1998-12-02
Good if your looking for nice hotels although one big inaccuracy. Hotel La Mariposa in Manuel Antonio is not nearly as wonderful as they described it, much nicer hotels are available. Good background info on the country.

The transformation from a manufacturing-based economy to one that's all about service has been well documented. Today it's estimated that nearly 75 percent of Americans work in the service sector. Instead of producing tangibles--automobiles, clothes, and tools--more and more of us are in the business of providing intangibles--health care, entertainment, tourism, legal services, and so on. However, according to Harry Beckwith, most of these intangibles are still being marketed like products were 20 years ago.
In Selling the Invisible, Beckwith argues that what consumers are primarily interested in today are not features, but relationships. Even companies who think that they sell only tangible products should rethink their approach to product development and marketing and sales. For example, when a customer buys a Saturn automobile, what they're really buying is not the car, but the way that Saturn does business. Beckwith provides an excellent forum for thinking differently about the nature of services and how they can be effectively marketed. If you're at all involved in marketing or sales, then Selling the Invisible is definitely worth a look.

You can't touch, hear, or see your company's most important products. . . . So how do you sell, develop, make them grow? That's the problem with services.
This "phenomenal" book, as one reviewer called it, answers that question with insights on how markets work and how prospects think. A treasury of hundreds of quick, practical, and easy-to-read strategies, Selling the Invisible will open your eyes to new ideas in this crucial branch of marketing, including:
*Why focus groups, value-price positioning, discount pricing, and being the best usually fail
*The vital role of vividness, focus, "anchors," and stereotypes
*The importance of Halo, Cocktail Party, and Lake Wobegon effects
*Marketing lessons from black holes, grocery lists, the Hearsay Rule, and the fame of the Matterhorn
*Dozens of proven yet consistently overlooked ideas for research, presentations, publicity, advertising, and client retention . . . and much more.
Based on the author's twenty-five years of experience with thousands of business professionals, this book delivers its wisdom with unforgettable and often surprising examples--from Federal Express, Citicorp, and a growing Greek travel agency to an ingenious baby-sitter, Fran Lebowitz, and the colors of oranges and lemons.
The first guide of its kind and a book already causing a sensation in the business community, Selling the Invisible will help anyone marketing a service, a product, or a career. Read it, and you almost certainly will understand why two advance readers call it the best book on business ever written.
Customer Reviews:
If you sell a non-tangible product or service, buy this book.......2007-08-06
It is much easier to sell a book than it is to sell life insurance. Why? Because the customer can hold and touch and see the book. You can't hold, touch or see insurance. (The policy is not the insurance.)
Beckwith understands selling intangibles better than anyone and he tells how in this book. It is in my top ten of business and marketing books for people who sell services. Even if you sell products, you will learn some valuable information. Well worth the money.
Short and Easy to Read.......2007-05-17
This book was suggested reading by our Marketing Department. As an Engineer, I decided to read it to find out more about marketing. The book was easy to read and understand. It summarized the basics of good client service. Most things were obvious, but probably not done nearly enough. For example, the book recommended thanking your clients as often as possible.
Not your typical book on selling........2007-03-07
This is one of the best books I have ever read on the subject of selling a service or services.
My company is a small-time operation. I own a computer service and repair business. Essentially, I am the company. That's why this book is perfect for me.
Beckwith's guide taught me what is most important about what I do and how to focus on that, and then sell it. It also showed me what customers look for, what they don't care about, and the benefits of knowing these things.
If I could go back in time and give myself a copy of this book when I was just starting out, my income would probably be double what it is today. Simply purchasing this book and making a few minor changes has already made a huge difference the bottom line.
Can't go wrong reading this one!.......2006-12-27
This is another one of those classics. The fundamental message is timeless, and while some of the companies mentioned have changed the lessons behind the stories are still relevant. The book is made up of a series of anecdotes that each delivers a punch, consisting of good solid advice. Harry was ahead of his time offering insights on the "new" world of service in 1997 when the book was published, and offering that even service companies have brand equity to care for. There are good essential marketing skills included here that many of us may have forgotten. I reread this book again recently and was reminded of a few things that are worth re-applying to my own marketing efforts and the work I do for clients. You can't help but become a better marketer after reading this.
Selling the Invisible: The Art of War.......2006-09-05
Harry Beckwith's Selling the Invisible reminds me of Sun Tzu's The Art of War in that it is not so much a manual on its subject as it is a primer on how to think about its subject. Knowing nothing of service marketing when I started to read it, I found many of its precepts counterintuitive (selling relationships?) but with the numerous examples aided by my own observation of the things Beckwith talks about, my eyes were opened in a way Sun Tzu's first readers must have been. Beckwith understands the core of service marketing is the service itself and focusing on the consumer's needs, not clever marketing designed to separate the customer from his cash or dazzle him with an empty sales pitch for unwanted products (take notice, Apple). This relationship to the customer and understanding his or her needs defines the successful business and indeed IS the successful business. Beckwith illustrates this with many practical strategies relevant to any service business.

A beautifully-written chronicle of self-discovery and an eloquent chronicle of outdoor life. Gretchen Legler writes about the complexities of being a woman who fishes and hunts, as well as the more familiar and intimate terrain of family and sexuality.

Great writing on a sometimes disturbing topic.......2006-12-06
Memoiristic writing about a sterotypically "masculine" way of being in the natural world. The disturbing parts for me have to do with killing wild animals ( if they were cows I wouldn't care, probably) but even these passages attempt -- if somewhat anthropocentrically -- respect and humility.
One of my all time favorite books.......1999-01-07
I love this book. It is deep, raw and completely captivating from the first page to the last. The subtitle "A Sportswoman's Notebook" is a bit misleading. Although the author does write about her relationship with the natural world she also addresses several other profound and provocative topics such as suicide and sexual orientation. I am not sporty but I am intense and introspective and this book speaks to me in unnumerable ways. (A special note to literary lesbians and their friends - read this book!)
I loved it.......1997-10-29
I'm not sure why I bought this book, because I don't consider myself a "sportswoman" and I can't imagine how or why anyone could kill an animal. But after the first chapter I was hooked. What a lovely book and touching stories. This is not a book about hunting, its about a woman's experiences with life. Very few books remain on my bookshelves as "keepers." This one will stay.

A Field Guide to Germs

Wayne Biddle's tongue is definitely in cheek, and both are coated with bacteria and mold, he informs us. Human bodies are the subject of his close scrutiny, and the chapters on flatus and body odor will force a chuckle from even the most body-function-joke resistant reader. Great photo captions, too--one electron micrograph is labeled, "Mmm...sweat pore." Our five senses allow us to perceive a remarkably rich array of environmental stimuli, yet in face of the vastness of the invisible world--the universe of things we can't see, taste, touch, smell or feel--humanity seems to exist in a narrow, dark cell of limited experience. It is the unsensed world, containing everything from allergens to zeitgeist, that Wayne Biddle explores in this informative, silly, sarcastic set of encyclopedic entries. The invisible world includes such measurables as formaldehyde gas and radiation ("There is no clean air left anywhere on Earth," states Biddle), as well as unmeasurables like God and thoughts (he predicts that a device to show how thoughts proceed through the brain at the cellular level will cost more than a penny per thought). Each of the 58 chapters stand alone, but a fun way to read the book is by following the hypertext-like links Biddle provides in each piece. In this way, you can travel from comet tails to dust to mites to bacteria, flipping around through the book (which would make a great set of web pages). Science miscellanea fans will rejoice that Biddle has followed up A Field Guide to Germs ... this is another witty, informed, up-to-the minute catalog of tidbits almost guaranteed to increase your popularity at parties. --Therese Littleton
Book Description
In this witty and captivating blend of science, humor, metaphysics, and popular culture, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author catalogs the invisible sphere that surrounds us.
Much of everyday experience takes place beyond the range of our senses. And in our contemporary predicament, where so much seems beyond personal control, what is invisible generates an index of what we are. A Field Guide to the Invisible is a layman's guide to the inescapable stew we're in, a thought-provoking catalogue of life's ingredients that are literally out of sight and therefore too often out of mind.
In medieval times, everyone knew the air was rife with menacing spirits--the souls of unbaptized babies, graveyard ghouls, winged demons who could rip the unwary from the world of the senses. In our own age of chronic low-dose exposure to sundry radiations; of infections from exotic microbes; of a biosphere so radically changed by the hand of man that the natural protections it once provided are no longer assured, it is still the invisible that worries us most. A Field Guide to the Invisible maps points in a parallel world, ignored at our peril, that we inhabit simultaneously with the one before our very eyes.

Good Information on a Lot of Topics.......2007-08-22
This isn't a field guide to the science of fiction characters who have become an invisible man or anything like that if that's why the title attracted you, which I'll admit was what I was looking for. There's no food not disappearing for how ever many hours once eaten, odours still giving you away to people in the room or anything of the type.
A field Guide to the Invisible refers to the word invisible as (from the intro) "everything going around and through us that we not only can't see, but can't do much about anyway, at least as individuals". This definition encompasses a wide range of interesting topics which if you haven't read other books on this sort of stuff you probably will not know much about. Topics covered include allergens, bacteria, bad breath, body odour, burping, cooties, carbon dioxide, cosmic rays, dust, gravity, fungi, passing wind, laughing gas, microwaves, mites, ozone, perfume, pheromones, noise, radio waves, smells, soot, thoughts, water vapour, x-rays, wind, pollen, radiation fallout and a heap of other stuff. There's also a heap of black and white photographs and illustrations.
The book was published back in 1998 so some topics with the invention of better microscopic microscopes etc are a bit dated compared to more recent books but none the less it is still interesting information. The book is not as light reading as say Dr Karl Kruszelnicki's Great Mythconceptions: The Science Behind the Myths, Q & A with Dr. K, Pigeon Poo, the Universe & Car Paint: And Other Awesome Science Moments (New Moments in Science , No 1) and the rest of his books. Do Blue Bedsheets Bring Babies?: The Truth Behind Old Wives' Tales, Shocking Science, So Gross (Over 100 Gross-Worthy Facts) cover many of the same topics and also appeal to a bit wider range of ages than this book does which is more targeted for older age groups. However not every one of the topics covered in here is done so in those other books and if you can get this for a good price you might as well.
By the way if you are after good invisible man fiction, Smoke by Donald E Westlake and Memoirs of an Invisible Man by H. F. Saint would be my pick of the best fiction.
amusing and informative A to Z of the "invisible".......2002-02-26
Wayne Biddle deserves tremendous credit for this fun little book. In a highly readable and often highly amusing format he catalogues a "who's who" of "invisible" objects, organisms, ideas, and forces at work in every day life from allergens to burps, from carbon monoxide to dust, from gravity to mites, ozone to pheromones, quarks to wind.
Each entry gets a few paragraph to a few pages, often with intersting quotations from famous people on the subject, the history of the subject, and lots of other useful and often amusing information, though sometimes disquieting too. Did you know that some foods are "hot," that they are naturally more radioactive than others (Brazil nuts, thanks to the gamma-ray rich soil they are grown in, are 14,000 times more radioactive than most other fruits)? Did you know that 10% of our body weight is made up of bacteria? That cigarette smoke contains 1% carbon monoxide by volume (10,000 parts per million)? That a single transatlantic flight will expose a person to so much cosmic rays as to equal a whole-mouth dental X-ray series? That prions, small subviral "germs"," "can withstand boiling temperatures, X-rays, ultraviolet radiation, and sundry chemcial insults, like ten years in formaldehyde?" Oh yeah. What a wonderful world.
Not all of it is scary stuff though, and much of the invisible world, including such subjects as quarks, neutrinos, photons, water vapor, comet tails, and krypton are quite harmless to humans. Learn such interesting facts that the pheromones of the silkworm's moth is so powerful that a male moth can detect as little as one trillionth of a millionth of a gram per one thousandth of a liter! That quarks, the most basic bit of matter that can exist, are "point-particles," meaning they have no volume, and have a kind of charge, but negative or positive obut called "color" and having nothing to do with light! That of the four fundamental forces - electromagnetic force, strong nuclear force, weak nuclear force, and gravity - gravity is arguably the weakest, yet unlike the others perhaps there is no known way to switch it off, shield from its effects, reverse, release it, or otherwise mess with it! Neat stuff. Maybe it IS a wonderful world after all.
All in all a fun and informative book, highly recommended.
What you don't see can hurt you.......2001-08-02
A follow-up to the author's FIELD GUIDE TO GERMS, this is an introduction to all the unseen entities lurking in our environment and how we know what we know about them. The discussion of various chemical pollutants and disease organisms could have gotten really depressing if not for Biddle's quirky sense of humor. The alphabetical listing even includes such unquantifiable invisibles as God and Zeigeist. A surprising lot of science in an easy to swallow package. What more do you want?

Book Description
Now in paperback, this book deals with the evolution of Xray astronomy during the initial phases of its development. The story commences in the late 1950S with the discovery of high-energy radiations from beyond the solar system, and is taken through to the point at which X-ray astronomers began exploring questions of broader interest in astronomy. In examining this early period, when scientists acquired fundamental data and the rudiments of theory, the author shows how technical progress, and public policy changes played important roles in advancing the subject. Three transformations of astronomy as a discipline are highlighted: the augmentation of purely optical observations; the emergence of federal funding as the dominant source of financial support; and the greatly altered size and structure of the research community.
