Book Description

Do you tell your preschooler one thing and they do the opposite? Are they easily distracted or unable to focus? If you suspect that your child may have a learning problem--or if you simply want to help them be ready--here is the book to read before he or she enters the school system: a realistic, humorous, and kind-hearted guide to helping your little one learn. In Ready to Learn, Stan Goldberg draws on thirty years of clinical experience (and personal experience as the father of two kids with learning differences) to provide an easy-to-use guide to helping children overcome any problems and improve their learning skills. Illustrating his discussion with many anecdotes about teaching both his own children and children in his private practice, Goldberg walks readers through the process of learning and shows how to identify a learning problem. He focuses on four major areas--problems of attention, understanding, storage, and retrieval--presenting each problem through the eyes of the child, in everyday terms that a parent can understand. He looks at seven down-to-earth strategies that will allow you to create the best plan to help your child overcome their problem and he provides many handy charts and figures that will help you organize your efforts. The book also includes a list of useful web sites and a chart of development milestones, outlining motor skills, cognitive-sensory skills, and language and social skills. Written in a style that blends humor, insightful stories, and practical experience, Ready to Learn provides a flexible, time-tested approach, using step-by-step strategies that will help your preschoolers become confident and love learning--before they enter the classroom.

5 out of 5 stars Identifies learning problems and teaches parents to help their children. .......2006-01-06

It's perfectly natural for a young child to not listen and follow directions on occasion...and sometimes you'll notice that it's more often than not :)! But if you notice that your preschool-age child is having real difficulty learning or grasping a new idea or subject, then you, as your child's first teacher, should begin early to correct the problem.

The book, "Ready to Learn: How to Help Your Preschooler Succeed," by Stan Goldberg, Ph.D., helps parents by identifying the five important steps in learning. He explains the different ways in which parents can teach their children at a young age, and shows them what children need to do in order to help themselves. He also gives reasons for learning difficulties and gives parents teaching strategies and solutions for preventing and solving learning problems. In addition, parents will be given the tools they need in order to learn and understand their child's own personal learning style, and how to help them learn more effectively.

MyParenTime.com highly recommends this book -- parents of young children will find this book very informative and useful. It lists many resources where parents can find educational support, and includes developmental milestones from the age of three months - five years. It also includes many experiences from both parents and children.

Book Description

A landmark book for parents on why, when, and how to prepare children for going to school and how to support them in the critical early school years. This book is based on the Ramsey's twenty years of research, including their just-completed National Transition-to-School Demonstration Project, which involved over 8,000 children from kindergarten through third grade.

5 out of 5 stars Treat Yourself.......2000-11-16

This is a wonderful book filled with important information, ideas and suggestions backed up by the kind of thorough, careful research for which Sharon and Craig Ramey are well-known and respected. It's also clearly written and enjoyable. I truly believe that parents owe it to their young kids (and themselves!) to read this insightful, practical guide.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2000-11-07

A friend gave this book to my daughter who has three children. She liked it so much, she gave it to me to read. Although we no longer have young children, I was so impressed by the book and the practical information it provided. Its divisions are very clear, and it offers easy to follow tips and suggestions.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Gem.......2000-10-26

This is a terrific book that's filled with practical information. I really appreciated the Rameys' approach of using research findings to show what matters and what doesn't in preparing my daughter for kindergarten. The chapter on "Ten Hallmarks of Children Who Succeed in School" was a gem, explaining what I can do to give my daughter a real edge in her education. This is a no-nonsense book with loads of useful advice.

5 out of 5 stars Ideas and advice for raising children.......2000-10-25

This book by the Ramey's is actually third in a series of books about raising children, from infants through school age. The book is very clearly written and provides many good ideas for helping parents to relate well to their children as well as helping children adjust to changes in their lives, such as starting school. The authors provide research examples to verify the things that they recommend and my husband and I have found all three books to be very helpful and fun to read.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money!.......2000-01-06

This book is a reiteration of what parents already know (At least parents concerned about their children's education enough to buy books.) It gives ridiculous examples of appropriate parenting versus non appropriate parenting. For example, your 6 year old loses a tooth and is embarrassed/scared that other children will make fun of him, he begs to stay home from school. This book tells you not to say, "Well, if you think the other children will laugh and make fun of you, I'll do it now so you'll get used to it!" (yes this is a direct quote from the book!) Makes you wonder who these authors target audience was. How many of us would react that way? Do we really NEED to be told not to treat our children like that? Other advice includes making your children wear seat belts, having them get enough sleep before school, and making sure they eat well at home (Creative advice, huh?) . The book is loaded with "advice" just like that. The only amazing thing about this book is that it won a parenting choice award. Save your money!

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Resource.......1999-11-24

There IS a difference between learning and schooling, and every chapter in Family Learning will convince you that we are surrounded by interesting and amazing things that families can explore together. Common, everyday words and experiences become catalysts for rediscovering the joy of learning. The book is chock-full of tidbits that will cause you to interrupt the person next to you and say, "Did you know this?"

I have used this book extensively in homeschooling my two kids, but I think any family could benefit from the clear explanations(especially in the science and math chapters), hands-on learning activities, and useful family resources included throughout the book. It is a curriculum in itself!

              Book Description

The deeds and personalities of famous pirates have received significant attention in recent years: however, no detailed depiction of their vessels has ever been produced. This title redresses the imbalance, conducting a detailed exploration of the wide variety of pirate vessels that sailed the high seas during the 'golden age' of piracy (1690–1730), from gun-bristling warships to smaller craft such as sloops, brigantines and early schooners. It incorporates the latest archaeological evidence to produce a fascinating account of these vessels, detailing their origins, development and tactical engagement. Packed with contemporary illustrations and superbly detailed colour artwork, the ships of the 'golden age' are brought vividly to life.

I found the book to be a solid resource in coming to understand the complex and sometimes contradictory world of marine architecture. The color illistrations were excellent even when the period reproductions were unclear. It was clearly written and easily understandable.

5 out of 5 stars Pirate Ship Review.......2007-01-09

Overall the Pirate ship was excellent and my grandson loves it.

However, in assembly, although relatively easy, the directions were vague. There were mostly pictures and arrows. The installation of the "collapsing mast" caused the most problems. It was unclear how the mast was to fit on the release lever. It turns out that there is a slot that the mast fits into but this is not clearly depicted.

4 out of 5 stars The Life and Times of a Pirate Ship.......2005-09-20

THE PIRATE SHIP 1660-1730 by Angus Konstam is an interesting little book (48 pages total), which has some very nice illustrations of 16th/17th century pirate ships, including a cross-section of the inside of a ship.

What you should expect to find in this book ... Topics include the design, origins, and conversion of pirate ships; small vessels and pirate flagships; and the pirate ship in action. The narration is easy to read and nicely detailed, and of course the main subject of the book is the pirate ship itself. One of my favorite passages was the real-life entry of a pirate-attack survivor, who talked about how his merchant ship engaged in bloody combat with pirates while (shockingly) two other merchant ships looked on, doing nothing to help.

What you won't find in this book ... I knew this book wasn't about the pirates themselves, as there are other books in this series written by this author that exclusively discuss pirates (or buccaneers). What I HAD hoped for, and didn't find, was a discussion about what living in a pirate ship was like (where did they eat, sleep, use the restroom, etc.?). As a side note, the closest I've ever come to seeing what life aboard a pirate ship might have been like was visiting the Vasa Museum in Stockholm, Sweden, which has a restored 17th century warship and includes a display on life inside the ship. It's a neat museum.

Anyway, this was a good little book for those interested in pirate ships. A recent pirate book I read and highly recommend is UNDER THE BLACK FLAG, which was rather entertaining for non-fiction.

              3 out of 5 stars disapointing.......2003-07-28

Hardly worth obtaining. Most of the information in here can be found elsewhere. But makes a good companion for the author's book on pirates by the same publisher.

              Book Description

This book gives an accurate picture of the pirates who sailed in the waters of the Caribbean and off the American coastline during the 'golden age' of piracy between 1660 and 1730. It traces the origins of piratical activity in the 16th century and examines the Boucaneer (Buccaneer) culture in Jamaica and Hispaniola. It details what drove individuals to a life of piracy, how they dressed, their weaponry, the ships they used and the codes by which they operated. Whether viewed as villains or victims the Pirates were a major threat to shipping and commerce in the western Atlantic for more than 70 years.

              5 out of 5 stars Pirates.......2007-04-10

I got this book and read all of it today, and found it to be a fine and enjoyable to read introduction to Piracy, focusing on European and Colonial American piracy between 1660 and 1730. The author does point out in his introduction that pirates always have, and always will exist, simply in different forms with different tactics. The author also discusses the fine line between legal or semi-legal privateers, and then the truly criminal pirates, as well the as the roles of women and black sailors. The book discusses the following topics:
The Pirate Crew (composition, motivation and dress)
              Pirate Warfare (tactics)
              Pirate Dens
              Pirate Plunder
Pirate Captains and Characters (brief descriptions of 9 piratical careers)
Pirate ships (inlcuding sloops, schooners, brigantines, and square-riggers)
              Pirate Codes
              Pirate Flags
              Pirate Justice
              Biblography, plate commentary, and index
The book also has 12 pages of full-color paintings by the incomparable Angus McBride, depicting the pirates themselves along with their weapons, victims, flags, and executioners.

4 out of 5 stars The Golden Age of Piracy.......2006-01-22

This is an Osprey book, so you need to think in terms of an adult version of the Eyewitness picture books. You shouldn't expect an exhaustively comprehensive treatment of the subject, after all they tend to be only 1/4 inch thick.

So, with expectations aligned, this is a fairly well done treatment of the subject of pirates from the Golden Age of Piracy. There are quite a few pictures to compliment the text and the topics covered include their origins, dress, tactics, flags, ports and ships. Konstam gives us some brief biographies of a few of the famous names like Teach, Bonny, Reade, Rackam, Vane, Every, Bonnet, Kidd and the Dread Pirate Roberts.

An excellent overview suitable for adolescents and adults, for more detail on William Kidd I suggest Richard Zacks' The Pirate Hunter, for more of an overview of piracy through the ages I suggest Konstam's The History of Pirates.

              5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Illustrations.......2000-12-15

Angus Konstam creates a vivid picture of the true history, but the illustrations of Angus McBride steal the show. While the book is full of historic sketches, paintings, and cuttings it is the color plates which capture the look and feel of the "Golden Age of Pirates". The book itself does a marvelous job of debunking some of the "Hollywood Myths" about pirates, but is not quite as thorough as it could be. Konstam's "The History of Pirates" is much more comprehensive as it covers all genres and era of piracy. Overall a terrific buy for anyone interested in the real stories of pirates. The plates are very useful for costume and prop design as well.

              5 out of 5 stars AHOY!.......2000-08-01

This is a great book to anyone interested on this period and in piracy.Angus Konstam's text is both concise and accurate, while Angus McBride's illustrations are certainly some of the best I have ever seen. The book is mostly about British pirates which should be expected, since Osprey is from Great Britain, and British sailors were always inclined towards piratical activities. The sections on pirate warfare and pirate codes are particularly nice, and you get biographies on such pirates as Blackbeard and Captain Kidd as well. The only thing I miss is a color cut-away illustration of a pirate ship.Even though,I must say It's an A+ job from front to back cover.

              Book Description

This book concludes the outstanding series of historical studies of the mathematics in the nineteenth century. Previous volumes have studied logic, algebra, number theory, probability, geometry, and analytic functions. The third volume encompasses: an essay on the development of Chebyshev's theory of approximation of functions, later called "Constructive function theory", a systematic analysis of the history of the theory of ordinary differential equations from Chauchy and certain of his predecessors up to Poincaré and A.M. Lyapunov, an essay of the development of the calculus of variations, and a study of the history of finite differences, in whose development Soviet mathematicians have played a prominent role. This book will be a valuable source of understanding the development of these areas. It provides the general reader, as well as historians of science, not only with the descriptive history but also with a good understanding of the outer and inner motivations and the results and effects of the presented concepts and methods.

              5 out of 5 stars Long shadow........2002-12-07

(It is now in paperback!) I like this book because it highlights
how several of the central questions and ideas in mathematics from the 19th century still cast a long shadow into the present. It is as true for the pioneering work of Abel and Galois, from the early part of the period which is covered, as it is for the discoveries of Chebychev, Markov, and Kolmogorov toward the end. The period starts roughly at the time of the Napoleon wars, and extends up to the Second World War. The articles in this well written book go into mathematical detail (for example, Kummer's theory and work on Fermat's Last Theorem, Dedekin's ideal theory, and cuts,...)and they represent a well chosen treat of papers, written by major players.
