Book Description
The Few and the Brave
Convinced by 1943 that the assault upon Nazi-held Europe would yield swiftly to elite troops, the U.S. Army created parachute regimental combat teams. Drawing on daring volunteers willing to hurl themselves from airplanes and hit the ground fighting, the 517th PRCT became one of the most highly trained airborne units in the world.
Blooded in northern Italy in 1944, the Battling Buzzards dropped at night in southern France for the second D-day to spearhead a savage advance through the Champagne region and then into the Alps.
Gerald Astor, acclaimed author of
A Blood-Dimmed Tide, draws on the words of the men of the 517th to create this gripping, action-packed account of a unit that existed for only two years but fought heroically to defeat the vaunted German forces.
From its campaign in Italy to its assault in the French Alps, the Battling Buzzards helped push the Germans out of southern Europe one fierce, close-quarter battle at a time. Then, after six months of nonstop action, the exhausted, battle-hardened 517th was called into the ultimate battle — at a place called The Bulge....

World War II relived by those who lived it........2006-03-24
This book is an excellent description of a tough fighting force, the 517th. It is written along the lines of Stephen Ambrose's war books, or Tom Brokaw's The Greatest Generation; stories told through interviews with the men who were there & their experiences.
I've read this book before but wanted to own a copy because my brother is mentioned in it, as are many other members of the airborne combat teams.
Hello.......2004-05-15
I haven't read the book, but I would like to. The reason for my writing, is to see if anyone out there served with my Dad, Mark Whitaker from Lebanon, Ohio.
If so, please email me and let me know about your experiences.
Thanks,
Bart Whitaker

Quality history of a special unit........2002-08-14
This is an excellent book about one of WWII's special forces-an Airborne Regimental Combat Team. The accounts range from gruesome to humorous, and cover both the combat and the non-combat parts of this unit's history. Military veterans will appreciate the real life view of life in the service, and others will get a look into this unique world. If you read "Band of Brothers" by Stephen Ambrose, you will appreciate the differences. Different places, different units (it includes the engineers, artillery and medical corps for example, not just infantry), and a different style of history. It's very engaging, and you get to know the people in the book. This should have been made into a movie. My dad, Robert Dahlstrom, was a 517th vet. He told very few stories about his experience. This book did a great job of telling the rest of the story, a very unique story in the annals of army history.
Outstanding - Deserves to be republished & re-released.......2001-08-18
This is a special book about special men. My father was one of them and mentioned in the book. I have met many of the men of the 517th and they are all first class. This unit was overlooked for far too many years. Mr. Astor has truly done this unit the belated justice it richly deserved. This is a great book and deserves another printing.
It was like Dad's old war stories.......2001-06-12
I grew up listening to the oral history of my Dad's (Don Eugene) experiences in the 517th. From parachuting off course into the vinyards of southern France, to the wild rides on scooters through Rome, Gerald Astor captured, in exqusite detail, every account of the war my father passed on to me. As I reflect on his humble accounts, I now know the significance of the 517th in WWII. Anyone who had a father, son, friend, relative, or interest in WWII must read this book. Anyone who has more information on the 517th and/or knows where to find more copies of the book, pleaseemail me. Thanks!
Book Description
Bamber Gascoigne’s classic book revisits perhaps the most fascinating period of Indian history, the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when the vast country was ruled by its most extraordinarily talented dynasty of emperors. Because of their virtually limitless power and incomparable wealth, these remarkable rulers came to be known to European travelers as “the Great Moguls.” In vital, colorful detail gleaned from meticulous research Gascoigne here presents in all their splendor the palaces of these magnificent moguls at the same time that he examines their passions, their arts, their science and religion, and above all, their sophisticated system of administration, which stabilized the greater part of India to such a successful degree that it was later adopted by the British. Acclaimed by travelers and scholars alike, and beautifully illustrated in color with 16 pages of photographs, Gascoigne’s A Brief History of the Great Moguls offers to anyone with an interest in India’s glorious past an engaging survey of a splendid culture and its singular achievements. “Entertainingly written history ... ravishingly beautiful photographs.”—The Times (London) “Extremely readable.”—Times Literary Supplement

Interesting.......2005-01-04
Although from India, much of what has been mentioned in this book I did not know. This book is well written and a very good start, since it is presented in an interesting manner. The moguls presented in this book are the main ones i.e., Babur, Humayun, Akbar the great, Jahangir, Shahjahan and Aurangazeb. The moguls were an important part of Indian History and in this book they come across as actual people who once existed along with the rest of the time period. Before you start a warning: Dont look at this book with your present sensibilities, these were people who were a product and a part of their time and not ours. Somehow these brief histories make for a good read. I hope someone writes biographical novels about these colourful rulers.
A Beginning.......2004-04-28
The full title of the book is "A Brief History of the Great Moguls", and it certainly is that, compressing just over 200 years of Indian history into 241 pages. But I suppose that's fine in that it does not purport to be something that it isn't.
The best way to approach the book is as a taster for further reading. That worked for me. Gascoigne devotes individual chapters to the emperors Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb. Their history reads similarly to that of the Imperial Roman families: plots by sons against their fathers and against each other, murders, deceits, coups and so on, whilst an Empire was being constructed and yet defended against outside incursions.
Gascoigne devotes much of the limited space he had available to architecture (perhaps the most enduring contribution of these emperors to the Indian landscape?).
Yet, such a brief history left me asking for more information: what for example was the Mogul Empire's impact on India's society and economy? The Hindu view/reaction does not really feature until the final chapter on Aurangzeb and the revolt by Shivaji.
Yet. In all, a good starting point, and the photographs are fantastic.

Book Description
Daniélou's powerful rebuttal to the conventional view of India's history, which calls for a massive reevaluation of the history of humanity
⢠Explores historical occurrences from each major time period starting with the first appearance of man 30,000 years ago
⢠Couples the clarity and perspective of an outsider with the unique and specific knowledge of an insider
⢠By the internationally recognized Hindu scholar and translator of The Complete Kama Sutra (200,000 copies sold)
Alain Daniélou approaches the history of India from a new perspective--as a sympathetic outsider, yet one who understands the deepest workings of the culture. Because the history of India covers such a long span of time, rather than try to create an exhaustive chronology of dates and events, Daniélou instead focuses on enduring institutions that remain constant despite the ephemeral historical events that occur. His selections, synthesis, and narration create a thoroughly engaging and readable journey through time, with a level of detail and comprehensiveness that is truly a marvel.
Because of the continuity of its civilization, its unique social system, and the tremendous diversity of cultures, races, languages, and religions that exist in its vast territory, India is like a history museum. Its diverse groups maintained their separate identities and never fully supplanted the culture and knowledge of their predecessors. Even today one may encounter in India primitive Stone Age people whose technology has remained at what is considered prehistoric levels. Thus Daniélou's examination of India reveals not only the diversity and historical events and trends of that country, but also the history of all mankind. Through Daniélou's history of India we learn from whence we came, what we have discovered over the years in the fields of science, arts, technology, social structures, religions, and philosophical concepts, and what the future may hold for us.
Customer Reviews:
Lots of unsubstantiated opinions, not backed by facts - avoid this book.......2007-06-24
I was very disappointed in this book, as the author quite frequently adds unsubstantiated opinions and biases and cites them as fact. Those looking for a balanced and useful history of India should look elsewhere. Among my issues with the book: the author seems to dismiss any parts of Indian history he does not agree with and just ignores them (in one area, he says "From the moment when the Muslims reached India, its history has no further interest. It is a long and monotonous recital of murders massacres, plunder and destruction"; in another area, says "Hindu scholar looked upon Gandhi as a sort of Antichrist, and made thank-offerings when he was assasinated. But it was too late. while he was alive, none dared oppose his baneful influence."
religions, various conquest and independence!.......2007-05-16
I was keen to read a brief history of India before reading about the Bristish Raj. Most parts of India history are not very attractive for someone not very aware of it, and it is not a fault of the author but because most of that history are wars of conquest, from the Greek, Afghans, Arabs, Mongols and Europeans. The Arabs were particularly violent in its wars of domination, sacking India and leaving its people in impoverishment. Then, the last part of the book, and the most interesting for me, present the European involvement in India, first in search of trading and later, as a struggle for dominance of the country by the British, prior defeat of the French. The depiction of India independence is by far the best part of the book, succintly explaining the bloody division of India into a Muslim Pakistan and Hindu India and the influence of Ghandi in the liberation movement. Another thing that this book show is the evolution of the religions of India that are very interesting to know.
This book does not focus on any part of the history, so to get a deep knowledge of events like British conquest or Mahatma Ghandi, you need to find other sources. Finally, one important thing needed badly in this brief history are maps to follow the reading --- 3,5 stars!
6000 years and 6000 names.......2005-09-25
This book covers the thousands of rulers that have governed India and the thousands of battles its fought over 6000 years. And that's about it. There are a handful of pages covering Gandhi and then onwards until 1971, when the book really ends. It is a tedious read. Although the book has a publication date of 2003, the only addition since 1971 is a three page note by the editor providing a couple of updates.
You need to already know India somewhat.......2005-09-23
This is not your typical history book and definitely not for those looking for "proofs" and "footnotes" and "references" to every little point the author makes. Also, if you are not Indian or have never lived in India or don't know much about the various regions, languages, and geographical makeup of the country -- this is not the book you should be starting with (consider the Traveller's History of India by Sinharaja Delgoda or the Eyewitness Travel guide or another brief illustrated history book).
Danielou's book, once you're reasonably aware of Indian history in general, will make you think for yourself and understand the heavy emphasis that most historians place on scientific proofs rather than possibilities. He has his opinions, and that's what makes this book better than most others. You may choose to agree or disagree, but you'll be better off with his broader perspective of things than with a prescriptive notion based on peer-reviewed and approved concepts.
The first few pages can be difficult if you're looking for a "well-written" essay -- with an introduction, expansion, and summary. That's not how Danielou writes and that's not how this has been translated. I give this 5 stars as it neatly presents the key aspects of an history spanning over 8000 years, articulates alternate thoughts, states the two or more theories, and then presents the author's opinion (with, in some cases, a reference to proof of some kind). I haven't come across many books on Indian history that challenges commonly held beliefs and timelines associated with the "pre-history" and "medieval history." It also spends extra pages on potential inflexion points.
Overall, a must read for someone open to ideas and possibilities, who wants to get a glimpse into why India is as complex as it is, and who likes history teachers and authors with opinions and stories (rather than the preachy kinds). It's probably the only book on Indian history that I'll keep and take with me every time I move.

Book Description
Philosopher, spiritual leader, mystic, poet and nationalist, Sri Aurobindo (1872-1950) was perhaps modern India's most fascinating and enigmatic leader. This biography is a comprehensive yet detached look at Aurobindo's career and thought.
Book Description
The painful and violent testimony of cruelties incurred by the Spanish conquistadors in the new world, concisely depicted by Bartolomé de Las Casas in his "Brevísima relación de la destruyción de las Indias", is both a terrible accusation and a warning addressed at Prince Phillip of Spain.
By accumulating descriptions of atrocities, slaughters and tortures, while emphasizing the deep contrast between the goodness of the natives and the evil spirit of the conquistadors, the dominic priest prophesizes apocalyptic consequences to fall upon Spain as results of the horrors perpetrated by the colonizers, driven by greed and ambition instead of the desire to evangelize and protect the "new souls". With his revolutionary writing Las Casas intended to share his indignation facing such unjust and unmerciful behaviours, which he attributed to the "encomiendas" colonial regime, while advocating for a human and pacific evangelization. As he had recently done during the famous Valladolid Controversy, he tried to awaken consciences, reaffirming his humanism and universalism through his relentless mission as defender of the oppressed people. Spain's political and religious foes took advantage of this libel, integrating it into what would be known as the Spanish Conquest "black legend", so it's author became the victim of criticism and resent by Spaniards, who considered that he had contributed to the discredit of his own fatherland.
